Pronouns

Emily has stated on their social media pages that their preferred pronouns are they/them. This ought to be respected on their wiki page. Anon (talk) 09:45, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

For how long has Carey displayed just "they" on social media? @Moviemaniaaction wrote in an edit summary that "Emily Carey uses both she and they pronouns and does not use just 'they/them' All official biographical text produced by representatives of Emily Carey is reflective of this and ought to be respected by editors on Wiki. Furthermore, all recent press uses she/her pronouns for consistency and as agreed by Carey and team. See recent BBC interviews both live and in print".

We need to establish whether this is still up-to-date or has now been superseded by Carey dropping the "she" pronoun. If the social media change is recent, it suggests that maybe Carey has had a change in pronoun preference. @Moviemaniaaction: how recentis the information you referred to in that edit reason and can you provide a direct link to the offical biographic text, recent press and recent BBC interviews in question?

@Anon if no-one else responds to this within a couple of days, then I think it is OK to change the pronouns on the article using they/them, which would become the new established consensus for the article. Offa29 (talk) 14:58, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

The edits made to Emily’s pronouns on their social media accounts were updated last week, suggesting that their preferred pronouns are they/them. Is their social media page not the most accurate source considering they themselves handle it? Anon (talk) 16:40, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

That may well be indicative of a change in preferred pronouns. I would lean towards a change to the article pronouns unless someone produces evidence that Carey still endorses she/her for references in the media. Emily clearly uses they/them pronouns, as on their instagram and their TikTok their pronouns are listed solely as “they”. Also posts from their friends and girlfriend refer to them as “They/themily Carey”. I would also add that on their TikTok and Instagram, they have referred to themself as a lesbian, and shared posts of the lesbian flag, as recently as 5 days ago. Well, I think we can say that the consensus of this discussion was that a change to they/them was appropriate. This is now the settled consensus for this page, and if anyone wishes to change the pronouns to something else, the onus is now on them to obtain consensus for it. Until there is an official source from their PR or media team to the contrary we should be using both she and they pronouns. This is a living person and is not something that should be for individual editors on Wikipedia to be taking a decision on based on their own personal understanding. In addition, Emily's bio on IMDb appears to have been updated to include new information, this will be managed solely by her team. As I stated before, until there is clarification via her PR we should continue to use both she and they pronouns. MovieManiaAction (talk) 15:38, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
