Millat College was established in 1957 and it was sponsored by "The Muslim Anjuman-e-Taleem, Darbhanga". It was the first Muslim-minority college of Bihar after independence of India. First, it was started in the campus of Shafi Muslim High School, Laheriasarai, and later on it was shifted to its own building in 1962. Dr. S.A. Hafeez Salfi was the founder secretary, and Janab Molvi Abdual Wadood was the founder president of this college, and Prof. Abdus Salam was the first principal of this college.[citation needed]

It was converted into a constituent unit of L.N. Mithila University in February 1976 with effect from 1 April 1975. The college aims at promoting and fostering and advancing higher education among the people of the educationally backward area of Mithilanchal.
