Egunren Kingdom is a Village under the local government of Ilaje in Ondo State, South-West Nigeria.

Origins

edit

After the Ondo Kingdom was founded by Princess Pupupu, one of the twins of Alafin Olueso. At that time there was a popular great hunter named Ode agba. He was highly respected across the land because of his courageous spirit of facing any kind of dangerous wild animal due to his physical strength and mysterious spiritual power.

The attributes mentioned above made Ode agba the head of all hunters and fishermen. He lived in a small village with his wife close to Igbo Egunrin of today. As a leader, his compound was chosen as their converging point before any move either for hunting of fishing. As traditionalists, before they all departed for their respective daily activities, they always laid curses on anyone who might engaged himself/herself in act of theft.

many years after, people were living in fear of various wild animals such as leopard, tiger, buffalo, poisonous snakes among others, which had caused death of many of the members of the kingdom. This multiple death made many people from near and far to move to the village where Ode agba lived for their safety. This immigration of people caused an explosive population in Ode agba village.

A decade after the mass immigration, there was a flu epidemic, which claimed many lives. As a strong spiritual man, Ode agba and some men from his village came together and met the king of Igbo Egunrin where it was decided to consult the oracle in order to get the cause of the epidemic. After the consultation the gods revealed that the land was cursed and this was due to the curses the hunters and the fishermen laid, and that the only remedy was to make a sacrifice, with a live tiger, which should be slaughtered to the gods along side with genus electrophorus, commonly referred to as electric fish, to purify the land.

At that time the only person who could go on such search was Ode agba, therefore he took up the great task.

On the fateful morning, he put on his hunting attire with his local gun and moved on to the hills, forest and to rivers far from home. He walked day and night for two days in the forest with pawpaw and uncooked cassava as his sustenance, while cave was his room. He tried the first day to get the two things but all his efforts were in vain. On the second day, he discovered a river called Omiju where he got the electric fish. Because of the long walk day, he was tired and slept off on a rock. Suddenly he had a coming of an animal but he couldn’t see clearly what exactly was approaching. Before he could imagine, a big tiger jumped on him, and he bravely shouted in Yoruba language: “IRO LO PA, MA MU E DE ILE” which means you are a liar, I will take you home.

In summary he fought the tiger, overcame it and he tied it. He carried it and moved towards home. Due to his long stay in the bush other fellow hunters began to search for him. He was about to turn home when they saw him. As they came closer, they were so surprised with what they saw, they therefore exclaimed “ODE AGBA OLODE EKUN E KARE” they all moved home singing in joy. Since that day the name “ODEDE EKUN” came to existence.

When they all returned home the whole community rejoiced, and the names Ode agba and Odede Ekun was ringing everywhere as a bell.

The sacrifice was carried out and since then the land was saved. That brave move of Ode agba brought more people to his village till he had a larger population. According to the history, people in Ode agba village came together and decided to be autonomous and therefore installed Ode agba as their king, and they named him “EKUN OF EGUNREN KINGDOM” where he ruled for many years before he joined his ancestors.

Traditional Rulers of Egunren Kingdom

edit

After the death of Ode Agba, Ayejulo, his son took over the throne and ruled for years before his definitive departure from the world.

His son Ikpinayo Moyan ascended the throne. After the death of Moyan, his son Ogun Monday Ayejulo Adelowo was to be the next king but he refused based on his contradictory faith as a Christian. Ogun Monday the only son of Ikpinayo got married to Rotimi and Dupe.

Dupe gave birth to Adelowo Alaba, Adeloyo Omokehinde, Adelowo Idowu, Adelowo Abosede and Adelowo Solomon while Adelowo Peter Ademigun, Adelowo Adedayo and Adelowo Adesoji Adelaja Monday Joseph were Rotimi’s children.

Taken back to the story, there was calamity in the kingdom because of the refusal of the throne by Ogun Monday. As a tradition, consultation was made to gods and it was said that if Ogun Monday refused to ascend the throne or to make it occupied by any of his sons who would be chosen, then the throne should be shifted to another family. This message sounded very hard in the ears of Ogun Monday and others and at that spot the priests consulted the gods (ancestors) to know who among the children of Ogun Monday could ascend the throne. It was on that day Adelowo Adesoji Adelaja Monday Joseph was chosen by gods and accepted by men to be the new king as Odede Ekun II of Egunren Kingdom. He ascended the throne on 08/07/2021 till date.
