Broken assessments

Hi folks: I messed with this but its well over my head. I'm assuming the assessment cats and the assessment display box are using difrent variations of C%C3%B4te_d%27Ivoire or Cote_d%E2%80%99Ivoire. Help request: 34 Côte d'Ivoire-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Côte d'Ivoire, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Côte d'Ivoire, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Côte d'Ivoire articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

1. Bocanda
2. Bongouanou
3. Boule (Community)
4. Béoumi
5. Mankono
6. Mont Sângbé National Park
7. Prikro

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 34 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Images available for upload

This user at Flickr has a number of photos which are CC-BY licensed (and thus available to upload to http://commons.wikimedia.org. He has a pile of picture (somefreely licensed, some not) of the CI national squad training in Abidjan, dignitaries and celebrities, and the city. I've got other stuff to do, but any image by this user with the little "(BY) Attribution Some rights reserved " tag can be uploaded and used on Wikipedia freely. Have at it. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Côte d'Ivoire to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. This is a low activity project, if none of the members notice that someone is imposing a change onto their project (if they check the talk page once a month or something), it would be bad, since outsiders would be imposing a name onto their project without their participation. A similar event (imposition by outsiders) at WP:USA cause a huge incident, reciminations, etc., when a low activity state project wasn't informed of changes to their project made by WP:USA.

No one (including myself) appears in the talk page prior to this discussion who have participated in this discussion, nor is anyone signed on the membership list. There has not yet been participation by the project itself. (Which is why I think a discussion should have been opened for a month to see if anyone would discuss it, before opening an RM proposal; if a month passes with no perhaps the project should be marked semi-active, and then outsiders proposing a rename would be much the same as any other user, due to lack of activity) -- 76.65.128.252 (talk) 11:23, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

• Mild Oppose - I tend to think that, despite the recent moves elsewhere, that "Cote d'Ivoire" is one of only two countries, the other being "Timor Leste" who have come to prominence since the people in the US and UK have become a bit less, well, English-centric, and that, despite the recent discussion of moving, this actually is, at present, the more commonly used form of the name in the academic world. It may even be becoming such in the regular news media as well. The fact of one page being named does not, as per policy, mean that any and all other pages must similarly be changed. Personally, I think it would be an extraordinary effort to change the templates to reflect this proposed change, change the relevant categories for assessment, ans so on and on and on, particularly when this matter is less clearcut than some might think. I honestly can't see any particular benefit from the name change, and a possibly extreme amount of work to be imposed on someone simply because they want to go possibly a bit overboard and seemingly remove a name which is in use, even if not in the most regular way, in the English speaking press. However, if someone else wishes to engage in the effort to change the assessment categories, banner material, and so on, then I would have no objection. But, honestly, it makes no sense to me to have the categories be for the Cote d'Ivoire topic when the project itself is perhaps Ivory Coast. John Carter (talk) 00:41, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

• Lest we get into another Côte d'Ivoire vs. Ivory Coast battle here, I think we should keep in mind that the relevant question is not what to call the country but whether it's appropriate for the corresponding WikiProject to adopt a different name. Might I point to Wikipedia:WikiProject Burma (Myanmar) and suggest Wikipedia:WikiProject Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) as a compromise? It's a bit unwieldy, but it's based on precedent. Kumusha Takes Wiki

The WikiAfrica project at the Africa Centre is seeking a researcher who has exceptional investigative, data gathering, Wikipedia/Wikimedia knowledge and writing skills for an exciting 4-week intensive short-term project for WikiAfrica’s Kumusha Takes Wiki project.

Proficiency in French is a bonus, as is experience of Uganda and/or Cote d’Ivoire. The researcher will need to start immediately.

Applicants should submit a CV showing relevant research experience to wikiafrica @ africacentre.net.

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

AfroCine: Join us for the Months of African Cinema in October!
