Template-protected edit request on 11 July 2015

The last section header in the FAQ section has an extra "was"; it should correctly read "Why was my draft declined?" [Belinrahs|talktomeididit] 21:16, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Done (though why Steven Walling template-protected an untranscluded project page as a "highly visible template" is a mystery to me.) SiBr4 (talk) 21:31, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Proposal for nickname change

I am glad this disclaimer page exists, and I am (for the moment) able to accept that auto-seeding with the user's name is not the best of ideas. However, I want to re-bring up the idea of something different for usernames instead of WPHelp#####. The suggestion, often batted around in the helpers IRC channel, is to have each person receive a randomly-assigned fruit/vegetable as their name (followed by some numbers, since the list won't be huge). This would make it much easier to communicate with Tomato22 and Strawberry41 as opposed to WPHelp32455 and WPHelp23445. I am happy to undertake the syntax creation and pass it for approval before going live, but the discussion has to happen somewhere. Pinging PhantomTech, Sam Walton, APerson, and kikichugirl, as they seemed to be the major players (for both camps) in the RfC. Cheers, Primefac (talk) 08:34, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

As a side note, other suggestions for seeds would be animals, colours, or random objects, but informal consensus seemed to be that people might be opposed to being "Dog" or "Blue" etc. Primefac (talk) 08:36, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
The script I had setup to handle full nick generation can quite easily be modified to use a random, but much more friendly, nick, though I'm not sure if a script would be needed. I support changing from a static prefix in the nick. My script had originally used colors since they were the least offensive thing I could think of but I don't think fruits/vegetables will be an issue and there are a lot more common ones than colors. PHANTOMTECH (talk) 08:50, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Support such a change. This was just brought up in -helpers because of two WPHelp#### users whose random numbers were very similar to each other. Since those seeking help are often confused by the concept of a public channel anyway, it certainly didn't help that they couldn't tell each other's messages apart. It really doesn't matter to me if we go with fruits, animals, colors, objects, places, etc; however, an idea could be generating a list of say 30 "acceptable" nouns from all of those different categories so that we have a little variety and don't become a channel of all fruit names. We could have some fruits, some colors, some animals, some objects, all of which are chosen for being relatively uncontroversial. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 08:58, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
  • I'd definitely be all for something like this. It would make replying easier too, I can't count the amount of times I've mixed up WPHelp67415 and WPHelp45294. Sam Walton (talk) 21:53, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Support This was supposed to have been a proposal, but it was buried within the disclaimer proposal and then opposed, which may have derailed it, by a now-banned user. — kikichugirl oh hello! 23:38, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Support this change as an excellent idea. As others have said, it would be a really great thing to have in the IRC help channel. APerson (talk!) 20:26, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment: I'm also going to ping EoRdE6 and Alakzi, as both !voted in that RfC and opposed this proposal. APerson (talk!) 20:26, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
    • It sounds like a good idea. Alakzi (talk) 20:27, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Support for now, it does seem like a good idea. I do want to ping Technical 13 however as if I remember correctly he brought up some strong arguments last time changes were proposed. oh damn looks like things have happened in the past week, oh dear. EoRdE6(Come Talk to Me!) 02:55, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

I've created User:Primefac/RandName, which can replace "WPhelp" in the template. At the moment there are 29 different names that get selected randomly, though more could ostensibly be added. Primefac (talk) 16:12, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

Template change

I just had six WPhelps come into IRC and all start asking questions. Please implement the solution found by Ahecht above. Specifically, replacing the current notice box URL with the one found in the sandbox. Based on the earlier discussions, there should be no one opposed to this change (and anyone against the wmflabs hosting will find an alt button in case it goes down). WP:REFDESK questions

The IRC channel regularly gets reference desk questions, which IRC helpers promptly direct to WP:REFDESK. Can we have an FAQ section for that? I propose the following:

Can you help me with...?
Probably! But bear in mind that the IRC channel is only for questions about editing the English Wikipedia. Any other questions, such as if you need to find information about a topic, or help with other things, should go to the Reference Desk and not the IRC help channel.

Modifying IRC names

Per the consensus above, please change WPhelp in {{Clickable button 2|...?nick{{=}}WPhelp?#wikipedia-en-help|...}} to {{User:Primefac/RandName}}. This will insert a pseudo-random name into the IRC nick field. If it is deemed necessary, I give permission to move the userpage to a subpage of this one (maybe Wikipedia:IRC help disclaimer/RandName). Thanks, Primefac (talk) 11:41, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Not done: @Primefac: I'm not sure that this will have the effect that you want. Every user will see the same "random" name until the page cache is purged (you can see this for yourself at Wikipedia:IRC_help_disclaimer/sandbox). I think you would either need a javascript gadget to do what you are trying to do, or have the link go to an external site (perhaps on Tool labs) that would redirect the user to kiwiirc with a random name in the URL. --Ahecht (TALK

Ahecht, are you sure that every user will see the same name across the board (i.e. everyone sees "purple")? My brief testing showed multiple names from a group of beta-testers (everyone saw a different name). However, everyone will see the same name per person until the cache refreshes (I see cobra and will keep seeing cobra until the seed changes). If anything, this is a good thing, because it means that someone entering the channel multiple times will show the same base nick for ease of identification. Primefac (talk) 15:31, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
@Primefac: I just loaded the page several times in "private browsing" windows on separate devices with different IP addresses, and I got the same name each time until I did a purge of the page. --Ahecht (TALK

@Primefac: That's the real question. Too bad there's no reliable place to host scripts like these. I'll hold off on changing the live version of the page until there's consensus on making this toollabs dependent. --Ahecht (TALK

Thanks. Not that it really matters at this juncture, but you should be using urlencode instead of htmlspecialchars. Alakzi (talk) 17:19, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Good point. htmlspecialchars is my usual quick-and-dirty way of sanitizing output, but you're right that urlencode works better here (not that I would ever expect a legit implementation to use special characters). --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 17:30, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

I, as well as three other users in IRC tested Primefac's script-template and everytime I updated the page, I got a different word. I didn't purge and I didn't clear my cache, just updated the page. Hosting this code on Toollabs is, osrry for my language now but, terrible. We all know Toollabs is highly unstable, and when do you think people start trying to access IRC? When things break, so having the code on Toollabs would prevent users from reaching IRC. (tJosve05a (c) 20:01, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Even if that's what you are experiencing, it's not consistent. Right now I loaded the page in a private browsing window on my computer and got "horse", and when I loaded the same page in a private browsing window on my phone (which is not on my WiFi network and has the browser set to "desktop" mode) I also get "horse". I refreshed several times on both the desktop and phone and kept getting "horse". I purged the page on my desktop and got "canary", and sure enough, reloading on my phone also gives me "canary". I've done this several times, and it only updates on my phone after I purge on the desktop. I agree that toollabs is sub-optimal, but the only other options would be to (a) host this somewhere else with higher reliability (not controlled by the WMF), (b) write a javascript gadget and get it approved, or (c) use the toollabs link on the button, but have a smaller "Click here if the button above isn't working" link that would use the default WPHelp name. --Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 20:16, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Ahecht, despite your methods of ensuring that the two devices are separate, that really sounds like they're acting as one device, specifically the fact that purging on your PC changes the phone (unless I've misunderstood you). Primefac (talk) 20:23, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Currently we have a he-said-she said moments. Where more 3 users claim to get different results everytime, primefac, Soap and myself, vs Ahecht. I'm not saying that you're lying, believe me I would never do that, but something seems odd here. Perhaps you have Firefox sync on both devices or something which causes them to act as one device. I don't know, but something is not right here. (tJosve05a (c) 20:28, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
@Josve05a and Primefac: Purging is a server-side action, not client side, so it makes sense that if would affect both devices. It essentially tells Wikipedia's servers to throw out their cached copy of the page that they're serving and to generate a new one. The word not updating right away unless it is purged is is exactly the sort of result that would be expected from Wikipedia's server-side caching. Now, it is entirely possible that you may see a different result if you happen to be hopping from server to server or something, but we don't want to implement a solution that will only work for some people.
My desktop is running Internet Explorer with no syncing features enabled and is routed through a corporate proxy server a few hundred miles away, while my phone is running Chrome for Android and on the local Sprint network. I don't see how they could be connected to each other. --Ahecht (TALK

The official webchat at https://webchat.freenode.net now uses KiwiIRC: https://freenode.net/news/moving-to-kiwiirc

To share data and trust with as few third parties as possible, maybe we should use the official website instead of kiwiirc.com. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:08, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

I'd (weakly) prefer we don't, because freenode no longer use gateway cloaks on users connecting via their webchat, so it's just the raw hostname. I'm fairly sure I'm not the only bot operator who uses the specific gateway cloak to identify helpees in-channel (though of course I could change that with effort) stwalkerster (talk) 20:14, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
