Commons categories for accomodation - WikiShootMe

I enjoy WikiShootMe! when I travel as it takes me walking to places I don't expect to look at. Since it comes from Wikidata and someone added all the accomodation providers there are a lot of motels with a red dot. I feel like a more specific commons category is needed than 'Buildings of (town or region)' but Hotels is wrong, I could make a new category 'Motels of...'? Or a more general 'Accomodation providers of...'. There doesn't seem to be much precedent in NZ that I can see. Also region vs city vs town. What advice? My recent examples are from Hastings, New Zealand if you want to have a look. File:Omahu Motor Lodge.jpg Pakoire (talk) 21:35, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

I think accommodation providers of x is a nice catch-all term - it's more specific than just buildings, but it doesn't start to cause all sorts of grief with classifying whether a place is a hotel, motel, hostel etc. which I could quickly see getting out of hand. Turnagra (talk) 21:53, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
A catch-all category for accommodation sounds like a good idea, possibly with subcategories for any clearly distinct types (e.g. caravan parks).
Regions are probably the best category, and if they get too unwieldy these can be broken down into cities/towns (a lot of accommodation can be found in the countryside, or in city limits, so this sidesteps the issue of needing to definitively state if something's within a city or not). --Prosperosity (talk) 01:41, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
The long-existing Commons:Category:Accommodation buildings in New Zealand seems to have been overlooked. It does not (at present) have geographic subcats, such as for regions, but "Accommodation buildings" is the base term you want. (Its subcat Commons:Category:Hotels in New Zealand does have city subcats.) Nurg (talk) 11:15, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Is this a mistake in the Gazetter?

The Gazetter lists Baybles Island as part of a mountain on the South Island.[1] Its feature type is an island, so do you think that it is a mistake? I can't seem to figure out where else it would supposed to be if it is infact a mistake. I can't even find any references to a 'Baybles Island' on the internet. Panamitsu (talk) 05:49, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

I've just emailed LINZ, so I think it'd be better to wait and see if they respond. Panamitsu (talk) 05:58, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
They told me that while the feature does exist, they don't yet know where exactly it is. Panamitsu (talk) 00:55, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
Interesting... I hadn't realised it could have been on very old maps (I went back to the 1960s and found nothing). I've now found a more detailed map showing the island (NZMS 13 sheet SD81, Glaisnock SD, 1905 edition, https://geodatahub.library.auckland.ac.nz/public/maps/LINZ/NZMS/NZMS_013/jpg/NZMS013_SD81_1905.jpg ) and comparing Lake Alice on that map with Lake Alice on LINZ Basemaps https://basemaps.linz.govt.nz/#@-44.9851964,167.4638122,z14.2128 it actually looks like the island could have been joined up with the mainland at some point - especially given the way the slopes to the south of the lake look deeply scarred as if by landslips. Taking co-ordinates from Google Maps I'd place the (former) island at 44°58'38.5"S 167°27'23.4"E or -44.977357, 167.456501. This of course is all "original research" but may be worth forwarding to LINZ to see if they agree with the suggestion. Daveosaurus (talk) 07:00, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
It's got to be a mistake, right? I initially thought that it could be some sort of metaphorical island (eg. a peak that was poking out above the clouds when discovered) but there's nothing there which it could refer to. Neither of the two small islands at that end of the fiord have names listed though, so perhaps it's supposed to be one of them? Turnagra (talk) 06:10, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
The gazetteer cites NZMS260 sheet C41 as its source. Sheet C41 was only ever published with snippets of two other sheets attached (each of which wouldn't have been worth publishing on its own) and a fairly thorough check of that map (NZMS260 sheet B41, C40 and C41, 1st edition, 1994) shows no named islands at the given location or anywhere else on the map. I'd almost be inclined to accuse LINZ of introducing the island version of a trap street into its gazetteer - the only hits I get when searching for the island on Google are a few mapping/tramping/earthquake tracking web sites which look like they've got hold of bulk LINZ data somehow. Daveosaurus (talk) 07:57, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
This map from 1890 shows "Bybles Id" as a lake island to the west of Lake Alice. I'm guessing it was some sort of ephemeral feature due to a different path the water took in the past (or a particularly rainy period), especially since Lake Alice has a very funky shape compared to the modern look. Possibly it's the 130m hill to the west of the lake? --Prosperosity (talk) 01:05, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
This circa 1904 map shows "Baybles Id." in the same place. So whether or not the feature is real or not, it's definitely in the wrong place. --Prosperosity (talk) 01:16, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
I'm guessing it's the 355m hill to the south of the lake, comparing NZMS 13 (1905) to a modern map. Daveosaurus (talk) 07:00, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Train station names in NZ

Articles on train stations in New Zealand have the same consistent name format, '[location] railway station'. Is there a reason for this? Often the locations do not use this name at all - for example, signs at Henderson either use "Henderson Train Station" or just "Henderson", never the phrase 'railway station' (which I have never heard being used in New Zealand, but I can see in Papers Past was historically what was common in the early 20th century). --Prosperosity (talk) 01:27, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

I am no topic expert, but Wellington railway station is a term that is commonly used in a large number of published sources:[2], [3],[4],[5],[6], [7]. I guess that a naming tradition develops for some places and not others, even though they are of the same type. ? In Wikipedia articles about train stations in other countries, I see that naming the article [location] railway station is common. Marshelec (talk) 02:03, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
I can't recall the specifics, but I'm pretty sure there was a fairly big drama several years ago around the use (and capitalisation) of "railway station" in article titles for stations worldwide. I think current approach was chosen as a compromise and someone automatically changed all of them. I'd suggest doing some digging before proposing any changes as you might inadvertently open a much bigger can of worms than you're expecting with it! Turnagra (talk) 05:21, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
There are discussions and guidelines around the names of stations (railway/train/bus/busway). See Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand Railways/Manual of style and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Australian and New Zealand stations) and their Talk pages. One of the issues has been wording ("railway" vs "train", eg, in the case of Auckland); "busway" vs "bus" vs neither, in the case of the Northern Busway, Auckland). Another issue has been capitalisation. Then there's the issue you mention of place name only vs place name followed by "something station". In the case of Henderson (and the other Auckland rail stations), the article name has been Henderson Train Station, then Henderson Railway Station, now Henderson railway station. One consideration is what the proper name is (which is not always obvious), but even if it is concluded that it's "Henderson", the article can't be named Henderson because of ambiguity. In that case, "Henderson railway station" is a handy natural disambiguation, although I don't think that is how it was arrived at. There are other relevant past discussions. The edit summaries for changing NZ "Railway Station" to "railway station" cited Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#RFC on Chinese railway station title/style conventions. Another pertinent one is the multi-article move request at Talk:Hibiscus Coast busway station. None of this is my considered opinion – just throwing out some things that come to mind. Nurg (talk) 06:04, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
They were always called "railway stations" back when trains used to run from Christchurch to Invercargill. In later years (after the trains stopped) the Invercargill one started calling itself "train station", but that was a piece of wordplay courtesy of the YMCA when they rented the old railway station for a gymnasium. Daveosaurus (talk) 06:48, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
Hibiscus Coast busway station – that was a surprisingly protracted move discussion that could easily have gone the other way. Schwede66 07:06, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Draft bios for likely incoming MPs

Just to let you all know that during an election campaign, it's not the done thing to produce new bios for candidates who might enter parliament. It's often regarded a promotional activity, and many of those bios get deleted.

If you want to put some energy into bios for budding politicians, the New Zealand politics taskforce has set up a process where you can channel your enthusiasm. We collaborate on writing bios in draft space and once it's clear who will enter parliament, we publish those who made it. Most of the time, we have all new MP bios published the morning after the election. Head over to Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/politics/New MPs if you'd like to participate. This is the fourth general election where we use this process; it's a well-oiled machine! Schwede66 19:30, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

(a) It's also true that photos and short bios of all electorate candidates (even those with no genuine expectation of being elected) can be added to the content of the electorate article. This reduces many issues to questions of balance. (b) It would also be great get extra post-politics coverage of former politicians who left in previous cycles, since this is the time they tend to show their heads in public. Requesting images of L&P

I've been working on the Lemon & Paeroa article and hope to eventually get it up to GA status. One problem right now is that the images aren't particuarly great and use outdated branding. I can't take an image of one myself at the moment. It'd be great if someone could add their own image to the article! Panamitsu (talk) Please ping on reply 03:14, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

West Coast Wikipedian at Large

For the third time, Development West Coast has sponsored a Wikipedian at Large to improve the rather poor coverage of West Coast topics. For the next month I’ll be working on articles and wikidata and uploading photo collections relating to the Karamea area (especially the Ōpārara Basin), Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and their history of guiding, and the Kōtuku colony near Ōkārito. Anyone wanting to help can sign up at the project page and get a weekly update of progress and things to work on in the form of a "postcard" on your Talk page. And there are small donated prizes for the most industrious volunteers. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 21:05, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Low-level macron vandalism

Kia ora koutou, there is low-level macron vandalism going on by IPs who pipe geographic names with macrons to the "English version" without macrons. Sometimes, those edits stay undetected for months, e.g. this one from February 2023. I've noticed that district templates seem to be a favourite target. Would there be any objections to applying WP:SEMI protection to those templates to put a stop to this? Schwede66 23:53, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

That seems fair! It looks like they're targeting templates specifically as they're less monitored. --Prosperosity (talk) 01:52, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
It should be noted, although with less importance, that similar changes are being made to more international articles. Here's an an example. —Panamitsu (talk) Please ping on reply 02:02, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that's correct. I've noticed that, too. My thinking is that general articles are on more watchlists than the templates. Schwede66 02:46, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I'm guessing suspiciously not for any Japanese words with macrons, though! --Prosperosity (talk) 03:17, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I've just reverted such "English spelling" edits in Central Hawke's Bay, Hauraki, Horowhenua, Masterton, New Plymouth, Rangitikei, South Waikato, Thames-Coromandel, and Whangarei district navbox templates. --Canley (talk) 04:11, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Definitely happy with protection being added to them - I noticed the same thing recently, and went through all of the templates in Category:New Zealand river navigational boxes to fix them (and add them to my watchlist, just in case!
On this note, is there any way to search wikipedia for specific formatting rather than just text? It'd be so much easier to identify these if we could search for, say, [[Taupō|Taupo]] - or for that matter, searching edit summaries for "english spelling" since that seems to be common. Turnagra (talk) 05:01, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I already run an SQL query for edits to articles related to NZ and with an edit summary similar to "english spelling" about once a week. The editor is aware of this, because they watch discussions such as this one, and now avoids that pattern. Feel free to tweak the query to see if you can improve it, e.g. by changing the page_namespace to 10 (template) from the current 0 (article).-gadfium 05:22, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I'd be inclined to wait a month until silly season is over and fix the lot of them then. Daveosaurus (talk) 06:55, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
This person is still editing removing macrons from these templates, I've reverted a couple in the last few days. I've noticed that the edit summaries always end in a full stop -- usually "sp." or "eng.", which is quite unique. They may change it if they listen to this notice board but it's worth a mention. —Panamitsu (talk) 23:06, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

I've protected almost all the district templates. There were a few where I noticed that they did not contain macrons so there's no need to protect them (yet). Please ping me when that changes. Schwede66 11:11, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

2023 southern New Zealand floods

Hi there, I have started Draft:2023 southern New Zealand floods in response to the recent flooding that hit the South Island on 21 September. The article is a stub that needs a lot of work. Feel free to help out. Let me know if Wikipedia should cover this topic. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 04:17, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Seeing the number of weather warnings current today... you may want to be open to changing the article title to something along the lines of "September 2023 New Zealand weather events". Daveosaurus (talk) 05:04, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Infobox mapframe not connecting?

I've been trying to update various river articles with interactive maps using Template:Infobox mapframe, as I've done on Cook River / Weheka, but for whatever reason they don't seem to be displaying properly. Instead of focusing on the river, they default to 0°N 0°E with no highlighting at all (as in, when you manually move it to the right location). This is happening even on articles where the OSM item, wikidata, and the wikipedia page are all properly connected, and I can't see any discernible difference between them and the articles where it does work - does anyone have any ideas on how I could get this to work? Turnagra (talk) 08:48, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

I did a few experiments and I'm having similar issues - the few articles I tried adding the mapframe to, it either defaulted to 0°N 0°E with no highlighting, or in one case pulled additional features not in the relation (a river had an extra way added that wasn't in the relation). I had an issue a year or so ago with the Manukau Harbour not having the correct area, and it persisted even though the relation had changed. Eventually it fixed itself, but it seemed like Infobox mapframe was pulling data from an old cache instead of the live OSM data.
I noticed the individual way items for Cook River / Weheka were linked to the Wikidata item as well as the relation - could this be a factor? --Prosperosity (talk) 20:58, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
Can you give some examples of where it isn't working? ShakyIsles (talk) 01:17, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@ShakyIsles - I was trying it by working my way through the articles in Template:Westland landforms, and the rivers seemed to be the ones having difficulty. One I remember off the top of my head was the Arahura River, but there were others. Turnagra (talk) 02:27, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@ShakyIsles: For me, Swanson Stream is giving me the 0°N 0°E error, Oratia Stream is totally fine (even though it didn't have a mapframe or an OSM relation until yesterday), and Waikumete Stream has an issue where a chunk of the Oratia Stream is included (to see this one you'll need to override the Waikumete Stream.map file). --Prosperosity (talk) 05:41, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
Adding to that one, it seems that a random chunk in the middle of Blue River is missing, before it turns up again in the headwaters. Turnagra (talk) 08:28, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
I've checked again, and Swanson, Oratia and Waikumete are all fine. Perhaps it is just a cache issue! --Prosperosity (talk) 02:17, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
That's a distinct possibility - in the past when I've had cache issues, it's still jumped to the right coordinates, but perhaps something different is happening this time. Turnagra (talk) 04:32, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
Hi team, ive had a good play with a few of these in the last week. My understanding is the important factor seems to be having the wikidata id tagged on the OSM feature. It is good to have the two way link with the OSM id in wikidata but it seems that the important factor is having the wikidata id in OSM. They do work better when they're OSM relations rather than just lines. I've tidied up all those mentioned. When you get it wrong the caching can create issues. It seems to take 6 hours also to come though once you update in OSM. @Turnagra I'm happy to keep working through the rivers in Template:Westland landforms over the coming weeks.ShakyIsles (talk) 19:24, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Stats NZ "Aotearoa Data Explorer"

Stats NZ announced last month that they will be replacing their data toolset of NZ.Stat and Infoshare with a new tool Aotearoa Data Explorer: [8]. I'm unsure if any pages directly cite either of these tools–I presume they cite the press releases most of the time, and looking at a couple of statistics heavy pages this seems to be the case–but if any citations to infoshare.stats.govt.nz, or nzdotstats.stats.govt.nz exist they will need to be updated once the tool comes out of beta.

Also of interest is that there is a proposed accounts system for the new tool [9], which if you have an opinion on, someone on mastodon.nz is collecting submissions of concern to send to stats.nz against having an accounts system here: [10]. ATMmachinePC (talk) 23:17, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I've added my 2c. Schwede66 23:25, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Population figures in New Zealand articles generally use NZ.Stat for reference. However, nearly all the population figures and references are generated through {{NZ population data 2018}} or {{NZ population data 2018 SA2}}, so the changeover will be relatively simple. Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Note that most of you will have had this invitation via your talk page already. Schwede66 21:44, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

I think the Bain family murders article has been mentioned here before. It would be useful to have wider input on current talk page discussions about the article content. It's a bit of a tricky one and I'm conscious that criminal legal cases aren't my usual area of editing. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:39, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Kia ora, I am absolutely slammed at the moment, but this page popped up and I believe it's using copyrighted images on the page, and I'm unsure if it passes the importance test. Sorry to dump it on your lap, but I don't have the time to engage with the amount of work needed on it. Nauseous Man (talk) 05:06, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

I have proposed deletion on the grounds that the subject of the article does not meet WP:ORG.Marshelec (talk) 06:27, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

New Zealand Day Act

There's a rather long-standing proposal to merge some acts of parliament. The key question is whether New Zealand Day Act 1973 should be merged into the page that collects several other acts from the same period: Waitangi Day Acts. If any interested editor could contribute at Talk:Waitangi Day Acts#Proposed merge of New Zealand Day Act 1973 into Waitangi Day Acts that would be great!. Klbrain (talk) 09:28, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
