Women and Foreign Policy: A Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

You're invited to join the Council on Foreign Relations’ Women and Foreign Policy program in an exciting new endeavor—our program is collaborating with Wikimedia NYC, Wikimedia DC, and the Wikimedia Foundation to host a women and foreign policy-focused Wikipedia edit-a-thon in our Washington, DC, and New York offices on September 6, from 1:00-5:00 PM.

Wondering what an edit-a-thon is? An edit-a-thon is a scheduled time where people gather to edit Wikipedia content together, trained and guided by on-site Wikipedia editors, on a specific topic. In our workshop, participants will focus on adding content to existing pages and creating new pages related to women’s participation in peace negotiations; women’s contributions to military, police, and peacekeeping forces; relevant UN resolutions; and women and U.S. foreign policy.

FAQ edit

I've never edited before. Is this for me?
Absolutely! We'll have Wikimedia volunteers on site to train you and help you through your first edits.

What should I do beforehand?
Please register with one of the event managers by 5:00 PM, Eastern time on September 1, 2016. If you have the time, go ahead and set up a Wikipedia account.

What should I bring to the event?
Please bring your business card, ID, and your own laptop and power cord. We have a very small number of laptops we can loan. A healthy dose of curiosity also helps move the editing process along.

Will there be food?
We will have a small lunch and snacks available for attendees to help fuel great edits.

I heard attendees get a digital subscription to Foreign Affairs. How do I get mine?
Check your reminder email to sign up for an account. If you can't find it, find someone from CFR at the event.
