Request for edit summary edit

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. – Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 20:08, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Succession boxes edit

Hey.... thanks for getting all those UK #1 succession boxes. If you do any in the future can you please make sure to combine boxes if one is already in the article (for a different country)? Sometimes the song title lengths make the boxes have different widths and it looks kinda sloppy that way, so if you combine them its all forced into one uniform width. You can easily do it by removing the "end box" text from the top one and the "start box" text from the one underneath it. I corrected a bunch that you did already, you can check out those articles if you're not sure how to do it. Thanks in advance! -- eo 21:48, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

ha, yeah tell me about it, I did most of the boxes for the U.S. by the way what are you doing about songs that dropped out then returned to #1? I wasn't sure what to do with those but then I figured for the sake of less clutter I'd format them as if they were just pages in a book, flowing from one song to the next chronologically without regard to those tricky ones. -- eo 00:09, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know, fortunately there aren't too many of them, probably a handful or so. [[Yorkshiresky 16:03, 16 August 2006 (UTC)]]Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Charlesjonesroses.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Charlesjonesroses.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Unspecified source for Image:Metop.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Metop.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 07:46, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Associates.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Associates.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Little context in Leonard Zelig edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Leonard Zelig, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Leonard Zelig is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Leonard Zelig, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Image Copyright problem

Hi Yorkshiresky!
We thank you for uploading Image:Syracuse war cemetery.jpg, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

Thanks for uploading Image:Defence of the realm.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Northallerton edit

Hi, thanks for the work on this article, I will have a look over it when I get time (not a GA review). The GA's are taking about a month to get through at the moment. On initial view of page though there is a problem over the population figures quoted. The last 2 figures are transposed in the text or the infobox, unsure which figure is correct. Keith D (talk) 12:06, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that. I checked the figures again from the census and have corrected them where necessary. yorkshiresky (talk) 15:18, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problems, I am surprised that someone has picked up the review so quickly especially when others have been hanging around for some time. Keith D (talk) 18:04, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have had a copy-edit pass through now and hopefully have picked up some of the more nit-picking items that the reviewer will be looking for. Though I could not decide on a dab for district council. Main problems would be the unreferenced sections of "A centre for trade and transport", "Present day", "Cricket" and ""Media". The section "Present day" is rather short and Education appears to be missing. Hopefully you can have a look at these before the reviewer gets to work. Keith D (talk) 22:02, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! Keith D gives excellent advice. Just wondered if you'd come across WP:UKCITIES with regards to ideas for layout and content? I applied as much of it as I could to the article, but thought you might want to take a look yourself and apply as you see fit. Hope that helps - good luck. --Jza84 |  Talk  00:23, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Northallerton edit

Hello. I'm doing the GA review for this. Since I started, you've added a substantial amount of new information. Could you let me know when you have finished your current work, apart from minor edits, as I need a version that is complete for the review?

I can tell you it is likely to pass because the only reservation I have is that the sources are overwhelmingly online when really we are supposed to quote mainly from reputable printed material (I know that from comments that other people have made about my efforts!). I don't think that is a reason to fail GA but, for your information, I believe it will fail FA if you wish to proceed to that level.

Anyway, let me know when you've got a finished version again and I'll complete the GAR. All the best. BlackJack | talk page 06:12, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm probably not going to do much more work in the near future. Though I may try to add a few refs to the sections Keith D highlighted as lacking.

Longer term, I'm not entirely happy with the transition from medieaval times to the present day and would be looking to improve that section of it. It'd be great if it could make GA status as is, ultimately I'd like to get it to FA status so any pointers for improving it in that respect would be appreciated. yorkshiresky (talk) 14:34, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Ray Lowry edit

A friend of mine lives in Salford. He is (was) a great friend of Ray Lowry. He sent me the following message: I'm sending this one around again because my dear buddy Ray passed away this morning. RIP Ray Lowry

Rest in peace. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 15:38, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:God Save The Clientele.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:God Save The Clientele.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 01:25, 11 November 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 01:25, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Jennifer rush power of love.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Jennifer rush power of love.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:09, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sweet Sensation edit

Are you sure about Sweet Sensation appearing on New Faces ? The reason I ask is that they are not mentioned on that article's page; but are listed on the Opportunity Knocks article. I have no interest in, or frankly real knowledge of either television program, or their contestants, but I think a little more research (not original research, of course) is perhaps called for. I suspect people's memories easily confuse who exactly appeared on which show. Best wishes,

Derek R Bullamore (talk) 21:23, 22 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it's easy to get them confused. However it was definitely New Faces and have added a better ref to the page. yorkshiresky (talk) 10:23, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Léon Gimpel edit

On August 9, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Léon Gimpel, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

File:Staffordshire hoard.jpg edit

Hi, thanks for the picture but you need to be more specific about the source, i.e. please link directly to the relevant Flickr page. Otherwise it might get deleted sooner or later. --BorgQueen (talk) 19:09, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, have done. yorkshiresky (talk) 19:27, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
I arranged for a copy of the file to be put on WikiMedia Commons [1]. I don't know if I have all the licensing etc right, but it is there. From there it can be used on other languages' Wikipedias.
In due course it would be worthwhile creating on 'Commons a "Category:Staffordshire hoard", as when there are pictures of individual items.

Bert Trautmann edit

Is Bert Trautmann alive or dead? There was a note on his Article page that indicated he died 20 years hence. This was what confused me over the calculation of age on the Article page.

Thanks for responding to my note on his talk page.

MacOfJesus (talk) 17:11, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

According to http://www.football-england.com/bert_trautmann.html he's very much alive and kicking, if not saving goals anymore! yorkshiresky (talk) 19:18, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:Bigbudgetcover.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Bigbudgetcover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:04, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
