Flatlist & large pages

Hi,

Could you look into the issue of {{Flatlist}} causing slowness alleged in (this reverting edit sumamry and discussed at Wikipedia talk:Featured articles#List markup, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:51, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

It's probably due to the large volumes of text being passed into the template through the {{{1}}} parameter. I've implemented an alternative method. See talk page for details. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:14, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

WPMILHIST Announcements

I've tried to deploy HLIST in {{WPMILHIST Announcements/sandbox}} but can't get it to work. It's complex! Can you work your usual magic, when you have a few minutes free, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:19, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't appear to be a quick fix. The base template at template:WPMILHIST Announcements/Shell uses ";" lists and embedding a hlist on top of that doesn't work at the moment. May be possible to fix with more css but that's beyond me. The other way is to make a new version of the /Shell template first which works with flatlist. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:49, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Infobox Australian road and Infobox road

Just curious, what's the status of discussions about merging in that last template? Is this something that we could get back to doing at some point in the new year? Imzadi 1979  06:00, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

I think it's still possible. Everything in Template:Infobox Australian road/testcases seems to have been addressed & I've just copied over the different header style with the road name at the top rather than the route number at the top into the live template. Infobo0x road also has the allocation param now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:45, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Looks fine by me, but can you put a colon at the end of the allocation label to match the rest of the template? Imzadi 1979  10:01, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Done. Well spotted! -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:07, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Cool, and thanks. Now to pitch the idea again. Did you want to propose it, or have one of us do it?
You can. I'll come along and help out later on if needed. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:20, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

db-meta Bing link causing problems

Just a courtesy note to let you know I've reverted your recent addition of the Bing link to db-meta as a temporary measure, as it's forcing unconfirmed users to go through Captcha. see the discussion page of the template and WP:VPT for details.  An optimist on the run! 10:08, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Listas param

Just curious about this edit...why was this done? Huntster (t @ c) 21:24, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

The did seem to me to be any need to track the usage of the listas param. If there is real need to do so then undo my edit. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:31, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

I updated {{Infobox military person}} to use bare filenames but updating the pages was proven painful. I really need your help on this one. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:04, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I've created a tracking category at Category:Infobox military person image param needs updating. Over 12,000 to update. I've also updated the infobox so that the image param will work with both options, so there is not as much of a rush to update all those images. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:01, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

comics creator

More and more editors support standardisation of Infobox comics creator. I think now we can replace yob/mob/dob with birth_date. Can you please help? -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:37, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

No pages use yob/mob/dob right now. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:38, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Just an observation, but if you are going to depreciate what you see 1 set of parameters, please make sure that they are only used with regard to the single field you are going to replace them with. One of the parameters you've been removing functions outside of the birth/death date issue. Could you please go back an replace instances where "nonUS" which you removed were completed with something other than "y"? It is used within the template for language ID of non-English names.

hlist conversions

if you would like me to help, I can update your script to fix multi-item spanning bold and italics. without it, you are basically screwing up the italics in templates like you did here. I recently added code in my own script to address this issue. Frietjes (talk) 21:35, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that would be good. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:42, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
This is even worse, now the template is completely broken, another reason to have a script do it. is your script here on WP? I used your User:WOSlinker/hlist.js as a starting point for mine, which is only stored locally on my computer. Frietjes (talk) 21:44, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

put the following in your script, near the top before you start the conversion to hlist

  while( myContent.search(/(?:[\n]|=|\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·)|\{\{nowrap[_ ]+begin\}\})[ ]*(\'?\'\')(?:[^\'\n]|[^\'\n]\')*(?:\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·))[ ]*\1/gi) >= 0 ) {
    myContent = myContent.replace(/((?:[\n]|=|\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·)|\{\{nowrap[_ ]+begin\}\})[ ]*)(\'?\'\')((?:[^\'\n]|[^\'\n]\')*)((?:\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·)))[ ]*\2/gi, '$1$2$3$2$4');
  }
  while( myContent.search(/(?:[\n]|=|\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·)|\{\{nowrap[_ ]+begin\}\})[ ]*\'?\'\'(?:[^\'\n]|[^\'\n]\')*(?:\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·))/gi) >= 0 ) {
    myContent = myContent.replace(/((?:[\n]|=|\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·)|\{\{nowrap[_ ]+begin\}\})[ ]*)(\'?\'\')((?:[^\'\n]|[^\'\n]\')*)((?:\{\{[ ]*(?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|)[ ]*\}\}|\&bull\;|(?:\&nbsp\;| )(?:•|·)))/gi, '$1$2$3$2$4$2');
  }

this convert the multi-item spanning italic and bold stuff into something that won't be mangled by your script. you can try it on an old version of the Holtzbrinck template to test it. by the way if you are using User:WOSlinker/hlist.js to do your conversions, I have some fixes and massive simplifications for that script, for example, you should replace

myContent = myContent.replace(/\{\{nowrap begin\}\}\n/g,'\n* ');
myContent = myContent.replace(/\{\{nowrap begin\}\}/g,'\n* ');
myContent = myContent.replace(/\{\{Nowrap begin\}\}\n/g,'\n* ');
myContent = myContent.replace(/\{\{Nowrap begin\}\}/g,'\n* ');

with

myContent = myContent.replace(/\{\{[_ ]*[Nn]owrap[_ ]+begin[_ ]*\}\}[ ]*[\n]?/gm,'\n* ');

which is far more robust and covers all four cases, and added the cases where there is extra whitespace. also, everywhere you repeat code for both • and · just use [•·] which will match either one. Frietjes (talk) 22:14, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

I just updated the code above to address issues while updating 'template:Bonnie Pink', where the bullets are inside the italic spans. Frietjes (talk) 23:17, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll take a look at incorporating the changes later on. I'm using User:WOSlinker/hlist-private.js as I sometimes make occasional changes for converting specific sets of templates and there's already other people using my hlist.js one, so that one just contained some of the basic stuff. The private one does slightly better in some cases but it's still not great coding and doesn't handle the italics either. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:41, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

I just found another one your script is missing here. if you would like to correct this, you can add

myContent = myContent.replace(/(\{\{)[ _]*((?:·|•|,|\*|!)(?:wrap|w|))[ _]*(\}\})/g, '$1$2$3');

near the top of your script, which will remove the leading and trailing spaces and underscores before you start other conversions. then, you don't need to worry about them later. the alternative would be to add a '[_ ]*' everywhere you match bullet delimiters. Frietjes (talk) 17:27, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

one more thing. I added the following sanity check at the bottom of my script. it checks for possibly mangled italics or bold markup, which could have either been caused by this script, when it split multibullet spanning italics and bolds (or failed to do so), or it could have been there before the conversions. either way it's good to check them by hand:

  // Error checks
  myContent = myContent.replace(/([\r\n](?:[^\'\r\n]|[^\'\r\n]\')*\'\'(?:[^\'\r\n]|[^\'\r\n]\')*)([\r\n])/gi, '$1<!-- CHECK ITALICS -->$2');
  myContent = myContent.replace(/([\r\n](?:[^\'\r\n]|[^\'\r\n]\')*\'\'\'(?:[^\'\r\n]|[^\'\r\n]\')*)([\r\n])/gi, '$1<!-- CHECK BOLD -->$2');
  if( myContent.search(/<!-- CHECK (?:BOLD|ITALICS) -->/gi) >= 0 ) {
      myContent = "<!-- CHECK BOLD OR ITALICS! -->\n" + myContent;
  }

what it does is add a comment at the very top telling you to check for these errors, and also marks the line in the template where it found the error. I have it add the line at the top so you can immediately see it in the edit window, and know to look further down. otherwise you might miss the warning. you can see an example of what I was able to detect and correct here. Frietjes (talk) 17:31, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

thanks. I've updated my script to handle spaces better & added your check sugguestion. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:40, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

The US Newsletter

I noticed you made some edits to some of the historical newsletters. I think that if you watch them for a couple months you can probably mark them as historical. Its doubtful anyone else will make any more (although I hope I am wrong honestly) so there's probably not a huge return on investment for cleaning up the coding on them. --Kumioko (talk) 17:13, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Template:Uir and ilk

Your recent changes to Template:Uir have produced some undesired results. Over 1,000 templates invoke this template. The |info-class=nowraplinks parameter is useful for many of these templates, but causes problems for many others. Most commonly, the use of |info-class=nowraplinks may cause the WikiProject name to extend beyond the userbox width when |option=41. This may also occur for other options. Examples include:

 This user lives in the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Please check each option before adding |info-class=nowraplinks. Yours aye,  Buaidh  15:54, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Externally hosted scripts on Common.js

Hey there,

Thanks for contacting me when you reverted my adding an external script to Common.js. Is there a standing policy about this? I realise externally hosted scripts aren't really ideal (considering server load, all that sort of thing), but I would prefer to keep it hosted there while I'm actively developing it (which will only be for another hour or two) and then move it to a gadget when I'm done. It's only done on a single low-traffic page for development purposes. If there is indeed a general policy against external scripts, do you think I'd be able to make an exception for an hour or two?

Andrew Garrett • talk 22:26, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

It really needs discussing on the talk page first, but I think most people would say no. Another reason not to use Common.js is also that you shouldn't really be making changes to sitewide code just to test (even if it is just running most of it on one page). Why don't you just develop in your own userpages at User:Werdna/monobook.js or User:Werdna/vector.js ? -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:31, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Fair enough, I somehow didn't think of my own userspace (perhaps because I'm working with other people as well). I don't think it was causing any harm in Common.js (though I did have one giddy moment where I remembered to put an if statement around), but I guess userspace works just as well. Of course, I'm going to have to figure out how to turn it into a gadget eventually ;-). Thanks for being patient with me. — Andrew Garrett • talk 22:38, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Also, note that when you create a gadget, don't set it to enabled by default. A few others have done that without discussion and there were some complaints. (see here) -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:43, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Template

I know that under WP:OWN i do not own any of the templates that I've created, but may I ask why did you move Template:Agricultural engineer to User agricultural engineer ? and the same for the civil engineer template? Abhijay What did I do this time? 12:59, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

It's just that generally, most userboxes are prefixed with User in their name. See the What links here for the Userbox template. There's over 17,000 templates prefixed with User and I've got a list of about 200 that are not, which I'm slowly working through, renaming them. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:05, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
K, thanks. Abhijay What did I do this time? 14:48, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
and per WP:GUS, they should probably be moved to User:UBX space. Frietjes (talk) 18:05, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Probably for some of them. If I spot any user specific ones then I move them to userspace, otherwise I just prefix them with User as a start. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:32, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Template:Jct, again

Could you look at {{Jct}}? An editor requested the type US-Temp be created and he went and created the subtemplates ({{Infobox road/NJ/shield US-Temp}}, {{Infobox road/NJ/link US-Temp}}, and {{Infobox road/NJ/abbrev US-Temp}}) that would have been deprecated when you did your consolidation work in the last year. From what I can tell, whatever feeds {{Jct/banner}} isn't accepting US-Temp as a type. I can't make heads or tails of the template. Thanks. –Fredddie 03:34, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Can you explain to me what you exactly have done? It is a mystery to me what is the effect on Template:County Clare, except for a smaller template. Night of the Big Wind talk 15:16, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

It's now a proper list rather than just a collection of links with {{·w}} inbetween them. Visually, eveything should look the same. See Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2011-11-21/Technology report for a bit of background to it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:36, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Aha, tried on Template:Michelin stars in Ireland. No change in appearance, but still 333 characters less! Clear and much handier to work with. Thanks for this, will use it! Night of the Big Wind talk 17:54, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes, the lists are easier to work with. Can also copy them into a spreadsheet & sort them and then copy them back into the template (if needed). -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:57, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks

I am using the hlist script and it is awesome. I think making navboxes easier to navigate will encourage less experienced users to edit them. Thanks for doing what you do. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:42, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Script issue

Your script had to be manually assisted with this, and with this. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:37, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

I hadn't added {{!}}) as there were plenty of others to sort out first. I've now added it. There still going to be cases sometimes that don't work very well and if you spot a set of templates that need something specific then it's sometimes useful to make a copy of the script & edit it to work for those particular templates. That one of the reasons why I created a separate copy at User:WOSlinker/hlist-private.js just for my personal use. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:59, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. Alas, I'm not a coder. Do you still want to know about such cases? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:31, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
You can always mention them and if they are generic enough I'll add them. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:31, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Fair enough; thanks. How about this one? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:52, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
I've sort of added that. It works apart from leaving a }} at the end of the list which is a bit more difficult to remove via the script as can't just remove all }}, so those at the end will need to be done manually. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:02, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
Noted, thanks. Here's yet another. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:09, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
That one should work now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:14, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. Next: instances of {{US county navigation box}} don't get |listclass=hlist; see this example. No problem if you want to bunch fixes, rather than giving immediate responses. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:40, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Fixed that one. There's just over 3000 of them so will take you a few days to do. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:28, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. We still need a bot to do this. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:46, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
Can only get a bot to do them when there is a set of templates that are formatted in the same way. That may be the case for those particular ones. But it's difficult to get a bot to do them all as there are so many different ways for formatting a list. I've managed to do quite a few over the last two months with my hlist script. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:51, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Comma-separated lists

How about comma-separated lists, like {{Jalilabad Rayon}}? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:13, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Commas are sometimes within the individua litems on some of those navboxes, so can't really add it to the general script but created a specific version at User:WOSlinker/hlist-comma.js which does commas. Could be worth switching over to that version and doing Category:Azerbaijan rayon templates and then switching back to the standard version of the script. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:13, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

True. I've now added that to the general script. The other version is still available if needed for odd cases. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:25, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

I've removed geobox tracking by reverting to before your recent edits as it was resulting in a non-functional category message at the article top, for example [[Category:Geobox usage tracking for other type|PHYSIOGRAPHIC PROVINCE Wyoming Basin]] was showing as the top line at Wyoming Basin and similar on other pages. Rather than messing with the code I simply went back to a clean version. Please fix it if it is to be used. Vsmith (talk) 20:05, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. It was more of an issue with the article than the template, which I've fixed with this edit. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:24, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Infobox AFLretired needs to be updated to support birth_place and death_place and seperate the parameters in the infoboxes and remove Color and fontcolor from them too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:27, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

I think I partially did it but someone needs to check and finish the job. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:57, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

I've updated the articles that use it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:32, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Moreover, height needs to be merged in a single parameter. This is the first step before we separate height and weight parameters in the remaining infoboxes. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:00, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Height is not really supported by the infobox but in the code heightin anf heightft can be found. {{Infobox Arena Football player}} uses heigthft and heightin. The other two infoboxes use hieghtweight is is also uncommon. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:38, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

stat1label needs to change to statlabel1 and stat1value needs to change to statvalue1 to fit all other infoboxes that use the same method. The same for other numbers. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:43, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

It now supports both formats, so can now switch over and then remove support for old format. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:02, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Your recent it to Template:Infobox mountain

Could you explain your last edit to {{Infobox mountain}}?11:28, 8 May 2012 (UTC) –droll [chat] 17:17, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

There's no need to transclude {{Infobox map}} if the map param is not set when using Infobox mountain. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:25, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Can I make a suggestion? The very first If statement in infobox map tests whether the map parameter is empty. If you are worried about the caption, you can simply move one pair of braces and get exactly the same results as you get with your edit. I would suggest tweaking infobox map, and revert your changes to the other infoboxes. —hike395 (talk)
The main reason is to stop transclusions of an unused template, so that when Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Infobox_map is used, it only shows articles which actually have a map. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:12, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Infobox mountain

Hi,

Not quite sure how this happened but {{infobox mountain}} seems to be malfunctioning with regards to the location map.

It should display the relief map by default (normally the alt map), falling back to the default when not available or specifically requested. However, that behaviour seems to have been reversed recently. Can't see any reason for that on the talk page and documentation seems to support this as an error.

As you are most recent editor (and know your way round these templates) could you have a look?--Nilfanion (talk) 23:10, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

exception for hlist

you should be able to get this to work, but I think you need to add the "!important" keyword to override the default. so, instead of

text-align: inherit;

use say

text-align: inherit !important;

but I could be wrong since I can't really test it (or maybe I could try it in my own personal css file). Frietjes (talk) 22:36, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

The following worked for me in my vector.css
/* lists in data cells are always left-aligned unless they also use the hlist class */
.wikitable.hlist td ul,
.wikitable.hlist td ol,
.wikitable.hlist td dl {
text-align: inherit !important;
}
Frietjes (talk) 22:39, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
we could also add the same for plainlist. Frietjes (talk) 22:44, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I've added it into MediaWiki:Common.css. Oddly, when I was testing earlier in my own css page, it seemed to work some of the time without the !important but not all of the time. Might has depended on the order in which the css files were loaded by the browser. -- WOSlinker (talk) 05:24, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Infobox on Montacute House

Hi, Although I'm on a wikibreak I noticed you had made the infobox show on Montacute House. You might want to take a look at the talk page where this was discussed at great length & the collapsed infobox used as a compromise. Some of the major editors of this article might object to your action - although I'm all in favour - as you can see from the discussion.— Rod talk 19:55, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Nowrap and hlist

Hello.

You recently removed template nowrap from a few navboxes that I've created. Actually, nowrap is needed here, otherwise there will be linebreaks at undesired places (in the middle of an entity). I've seen it myself.

So if you don't mind, I'll revert this on "my" templates.

Regards

HandsomeFella (talk) 09:43, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Are you using IE 6 or 7 ? In MediaWiki:Common.css there is the following CSS:
.navbox .hlist dd,
.navbox .hlist dt,
.navbox .hlist li {
    white-space: nowrap; /* Nowrap list items in navboxes */
    white-space: normal !ie;  /* IE < 8 no-wraps entire list, so disable it */
}
So hlist in a navbox automatically includes nowraping for everything apart from IE 6 & 7. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:44, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Actually it's IE 8. I am currently at work (oops...), and can't say off the top of my head what I have at home, but it's probably IE 8 there too. So maybe the code doesn't work? HandsomeFella (talk) 11:25, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, just checked it against IE 8 & 9 with this old revision of one of the templates and then resized the window and the wrapping was fine. Unfortunatly, I don't have IE 6 or 7 to hand to test those.
Strange. When I pick up Template:2008 Summer Olympics water polo convenience template navbox, remove nowrap for the men's game A9 (Australia–Canada), which appears as the first item on the second line following a linebreak, and then preview it, "A9 (Australia–" moves up to the first line, and "Canada)" stays on the second line, which is obviously not what one wants. HandsomeFella (talk) 11:51, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Tried the old version above, and same thing happens: linebreaks between the dot and "Ax" (game designation), between "Ax" and left parenthesis, and between endash and question mark, as I gradually resize the window. HandsomeFella (talk) 12:12, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Also, as a separate thing, I've added some br tags to Template:2012 Summer Olympics handball convenience template navbox to make the groups narrower and give more from to the list section. Hope you don't mind. A similar thing could be done to the other templates. -- WOSlinker (talk) 11:43, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Naaa.... I think that that images are better than others and if you see this commons category commons:Category:Persons placeholders, you can see that are "Placeholder images". You must to tell me if you don't like, the images must to be removed? If no, and without community consensus, I think that is possible to re-put it. --Kasper2006 (talk) 07:33, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
There is no consensus either way. The question has been asked a few times but nothing was ever decided. If it was no then there wouldn't be any placeholder images about. If it was yes then all the Infobox templates would show the placeholder images automatically if no image was set. But what we have instead is that there are a small percentage of articles that have a placeholder image. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:52, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
"Small percentage" you said... than let's go to delete this 116. --Kasper2006 (talk) 08:58, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
No, there are more than that. See [1]. I've just removed the tracking category from the Infobox templates as there doesn't seem much use for it. I originally setup that category to see how the placeholder images were being used. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:55, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

template:infobox swimmer additional parameter "pb"

Hi! May I ask your opinion whether a parameter for "personal best/s" will be also suitable at the T:infobox swimmer? See T:infobox athlete as an example. Cheers. CeeGee (talk) 14:32, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Well, if infobox athlete has it then doesn't seem to be much of a reason not to have it for swimmers as well. You could always just add a note on Template talk:Infobox swimmer and see if anyone else has anything to say about it and if not then just go ahead and add it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:44, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
IMO the reason is that a record in swimming isn't like athletics record. For a swimmer of 20 years ago is not significant know his time, because you can't compare the periods. --Kasper2006 (talk) 16:17, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi WOS. Template:Userspace draft calls Template:New unreviewed article which calls Template:Ambox and I am trying to get the substitution detection working by passing subst through. It's not working as I hoped - can you take a look? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:14, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Seems to be working when I tried it out. Do you have an example where it's not working? -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:12, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
So it is, sorry. I was expecting the red error message to show up, but now I remember that only happens when the name parameter is used. Thanks anyway — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:11, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

hlist class

Hi WOSlinker, I see from Special:Contributions/WOSlinker that you've made thousands of edits, single-handedly converting all the Navigational boxes without horizontal lists to use the hlist class. Are you doing this manually? Shouldn't there be some way to write a bot or at least use AWB to help with the job? Set theorist (talk) 09:53, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm using some javascript assisted edits, using User:WOSlinker/hlist.js. It does some of the work but still needs checking before saving as sometimes it doesn't do everything correctly. There are other people use it or their own versions as well. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:21, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Zero-level categories

Hi. Thanks for working on the language categories. But please don't add zero level categories. There is long standing previous consensus to not have zero level language categories. (You're not the only one - I've heard that there is a bot somewhere automatically creating them too.) - jc37 17:03, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

I took a closer look at your edits. My apologies, you were categorising the templates, not adding categories to categorise Wikipedians through transclusion. Sorry for the misunderstanding : ) - jc37 22:32, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

jct, again

Ok, quick question. When we added the "extra" parameter, {{jct/extra}} was created to handle which graphic was displayed between airports, etc. I just added a switch so that if the country=AUS, then the airport graphic is switched to one with a blue background. Can you add whatever we need to pass the country through to that subtemplate so that the switch works? Thanks! Imzadi 1979  07:25, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

I've done that. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:40, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Category:Unsorted userboxes

Thanks for adding a category to {{User 1ofActive‎}}, you prompted me to put it in its proper category Category:Edit user templates. For future reference, Category:Userboxes should contain only subcategories, userboxes should be put in a specific subcategory or Category:Unsorted userboxes. ··gracefool 16:51, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm just putting them in the root category as a starting point. Will look at moving them to sub-cats later on. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:05, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I'm suggesting you use Category:Unsorted userboxes instead. ··gracefool 21:03, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

jct needs a sibling

In short, we could use someone who understands how jct works well enough to make a sibling template, {{jctname}} or similar. The idea would be that it would work substantially the same with a twist in the output, and hopefully use all of the subtemplates and back end that's in place.

Instead of getting:
  AK-9 (Seward Highway) – Anchorage
we'd get:
  Seward Highway (AK-9) – Anchorage
Basically, it would put the priority on the names over the numbers, usable for places like Alaska or Australia where the names have the priority, and any numbers are secondary. There's a discussion about it over at Template talk:Jct#Coding Jct to allow "name (route)", but it's an outgrowth of additional discussions at WT:RJL and the Western Australia WikiProject. Imzadi 1979  07:33, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

It's now ready to test, but only for one or two roads. Will add 3 & 4 later if everything ok. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:00, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

hlist

seems not very controversial, but I posted a thread for adding hlist to Infobox music genre. Frietjes (talk) 20:40, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

The nowrap feature of hlist currently only works in navboxes due to some of the css in MediaWiki:Common.css. It still wraps in infoboxes. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:25, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
.navbox .hlist dd,
.navbox .hlist dt,
.navbox .hlist li {
    white-space: nowrap; /* Nowrap list items in navboxes */
    white-space: normal !ie;  /* IE < 8 no-wraps entire list, so disable it */
}
.navbox .hlist dd dl,
.navbox .hlist dt dl,
.navbox .hlist li ol,
.navbox .hlist li ul {
    white-space: normal; /* But allow parent list items to be wrapped */
}
e.g.
Thisistheheader
  • Item one
  • Item two three four five size
  • Item seven eight
interesting. is there any reason why we cannot add the same for the infobox class? Frietjes (talk) 21:49, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Don't see any reason why not. I've added a new discussion at MediaWiki talk:Common.css to see if anyone has any comments. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:11, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
great. by the way, sidebar uses "class = nowraplinks" by default, which would generally fix the issue in the infobox in question, since they are almost all (if not all) lists of links. however, it's possible that there may be other links in the infobox which may need to wrapped. Flatlist/microformat

Hi, please can you explain why you created {{Flatlist/microformat}}? Cheers, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:10, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

I wanted to see which templates where using flatlist and it wasn't very easy to do so with all those microformat templates on the documentation pages. Once I'd switched them over it was easier to find the templates and I then changed some of those to just use listclass=hlist in the navboxes instead of using flatlist. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:37, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

I created Category:Infobox automobile image param needs updating. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:39, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

I also removed historical parameters: similar, parent_company, fuel_capacity, fuel_economy, electric_range. There may be some leftovers due to unbalanced brackets. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:03, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

If you have any handy tool to convert filenames please use it or tell me how to use it. -- Magioladitis (talk) 00:08, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

{{USRD}} and needs-kml

I tried adding the above flag that checks for the presence of the KML page. It displays fine, but when a KML page is added, it does not refresh the category; a null edit is required to fix it. Do you have any ideas as to why that is? --Rschen7754 00:07, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

I think they do refresh eventually but it can take a long time since creating a kml page doesn't cause the talk page to get recategorized. Someone else may be able to explain the reasons better than me though. Try asking on WP:VPT if you want. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:37, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Infobox planet

I am interested of why you made this change? The default color has been always present, but was lost during the recent conversion to the meta-template. It was not a new addition. I only fixed an error. Ruslik_Zero 10:40, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

If you read the template code for the old version more carefully you will notice that the paleturquoise is inside a noinclude tag, so it was only shown on the template page and not when the template was used on any other pages. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:44, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Data for Module:Convert

I have done some major refactoring of Module:Convert to implement my plan to create the required data table from a master list. I have put the resulting data into the module, and the source list is here. If we agree on that procedure, it will be important that updates to the conversion data occur in the master list only—data in the module should not be changed except by copying the results of processing the master list.

I am working on a list I have created by copying all data from Template:Convert/list of units (and each of the "full list" pages that it links to). I hope to update my master list with nearly all the conversion data in a few days, but several details will have to be determined before it is complete (for one thing, the power units are not documented). Navbox|child

Hi, please could explain why you have changed {{Navbox subgroups to {{Navbox|child at Template:India topics. The Navbox documentation recommends using {{Navbox subgroup}} so I was wondering whether there is a reason for doing it like this? Lmatt (talk) 02:48, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Hadn't noticed that in the docs. Anyway, Navbox subgroup just calls Navbox with the child option, so there seemed little point to me in using it when Navbox|child could be used directly. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:29, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Talk pages not showing up in a category

There are a talk pages not showing up in Category:Biography articles with blank priority parameter

Some examples are: Talk:Alain Junior Ollé Ollé, Talk:Albert Duro, Talk:Barrie Vagg and Talk:Billy Payne (footballer). The last two have been since correct.

What is weird is that at the bottom of the talk pages, it does say they are part of the category. Can you think of what is going on? Bgwhite (talk) 08:35, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Not sure why that is but a null edit on the first fixed it and it's in the category now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:38, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Convert nowrap

I have noticed some unexpected results from {{convert}}. It often puts   between the output value and unit, but not between the input value and its unit. Also, for temperature, it uses custom nowrap html (in addition to nbsp for the output). The following shows two examples; the first line is the template, and the second is the resulting wikitext.

{{convert|10|mi|km}}
10 miles (16 km)

{{convert|0|C|F}}
<span style="white-space:nowrap;">0 °C</span> <span style="white-space:nowrap;">(32 °F)</span>

Can you think of a reason why the span element would be used? I'm thinking that Module:Convert should use nbsp for both the input and output units, and should not use span. Unfortunately that would break our testing because the module results would differ from the expected. I suppose I could start by trying to reproduce exactly what the template does, and remove the unnecessary span later? Ugly.

I think we should have an enwiki talk page to (occasionally) raise issues like this—preferably dedicated to convert as it is sufficiently complex. A talk page on test2 would be ok, but it would be one more page that probably should be imported to enwiki later (I'm thinking that some history of discussions might be useful). On such a page I would speculate about how a transition from template to module might occur (with difficulty!). Would such a talk page be useful? Where? Johnuniq (talk) 03:49, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

I think it's just whoever created each sub-template of convert did it the way they want to, so not everything in convert is standardised. When it's time to do the proper testing, we could create a separate lua template which would tidy up the output from both the current convert and the new convert, removing spans and replacing  's with spaces, which would then make the comparisons work better. Even then, I think that sometimes we might want to accept a few fails for the final version since some of the current convert code is a bit odd sometimes. Perhaps a talk page at Template talk:Convert/lua would be a good place for it all. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:52, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, thanks, that sounds right. I was over-thinking it, and forgetting that there are thousands of pages involved in the template. Your Module:TestTidy is very sweet. Johnuniq (talk) 21:33, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
