Kamal Haasan edit

Dear Universal Soldier,

Thank you very much for your message and your kind words. I appreciate the fact that you are paying genuine attention to this article at a time when no one else, it seems, is putting the required effort into it. If I had the luxury of leisure I would certainly do much more to brush this piece up, but, unfortunately, heavy lecturing commitments this year means I will be taking a lengthy hiatus from Wikipedia. But I am confident you can contribute very meaningfully yourself to this article.

I went through the article cursorily the other day and decided to focus briefly on the first paragraph in the Kamal article. As you would know so well, the first (introductory) paragraph is a key component of any encylopaedic article; it functions as an introductory passage that conveys to the lay reader a basic, overall idea about the subject it deals with, and contains information that is outstanding about the subject (i.e., why this subject is important; e.g., "... is an award-winning actor..."; "first man on a wheelchair to ascend Mount Everest"; "the longest-serving monarch in the world", etc.). If possible, a good introductory paragraph should be able to capture the interest of the reader, but this is secondary. An introductory paragraph should not contain information that best belongs elsewhere, and should dispense with hyperbolic statements (e.g., "this actor can act in 10 different roles" -- a fact that is not unique, not a key piece of information about the subject in general, and is something that can be mentioned elsewhere in the article). As with any other part of the article, it is important that ctiations/references are relevant, credible and correctly-placed.

Given these criteria, the introductory paragraph for Kamal Haasan was in poor form to my eyes. To list a few of the issues: there is that hyperbolic statement about Dasavaratham at the tail of the paragraph that could be mentioned later; citations are made at odd, meaningless junctures of the article (see, e.g., citation [1] and [2]); it is uncertain that these citations are credible or are related to the sentence in which they are placed (they seem to come from a website called "Galatta" which doesn't sound serious to me... it sounds like a celebrity tabloid article, rather than, say, a newspaper article from The Hindu); details pertaining to which year he had won the National Awards and for what services could be saved for a later section (it suffices to say, for example, that he is an award-winning actor or that he has won four (or five?) National Awards for acting); and finally, the paragraph could be written in a more succinct, more digestible way. I amended the first paragraph with these issues in mind.

As for the lengthy filmography section that I removed, please refer to this comment in the discussion page.

Most editors do not discuss their edits or the goals they have in mind for an article. So I sincerely appreciate this opportunity for dialogue that you have made possible. Thanking you, very sincerely, AppleJuggler (talk) 02:09, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Noticed your very recent and energetic work on this article. Good to see that. I will not be able to do work on the article anymore. Perhaps once in several months I may be able to skim through it and render some general editing. But I wish you and all other participating editors good luck. I left some guidelines in the talk page of the article. I hope that you find it helpful. Cheers, AppleJuggler (talk) 04:59, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi. Have you read the comments that I have left on the discussion page of the Kamal Haasan article (refer above note)? You might find it useful, particularly the one about the importance of typing up an edit summary with each edit that is made. AppleJuggler (talk) 00:02, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

And by the way, regarding Ilaiyaraaja edit

This article could be elevated to an FA but work is required on its referencing/citation format. Are you by any chance familiar with the Wikipedia reference template standards? Because I am not. If you are, would you please be able to look into this sometime, if time permits you? AppleJuggler (talk) 02:23, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

FA edit

Hi. I'm afraid I'm a bit full up at present but I think it is a good idea, one I suggested a while back but my idea was to generate GA's rather than hard and knackering FA'S. I'll look over it when I have time and help you copy edit it if you like. Something like Collaboration of the Fortnight, a core article on Indian cinema is voted to be worked on to reach a GA etc ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:30, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, sorry buddy but I won't be able to help also. Although I am currently off for a week from University, I will be occupied by other stuffs, such as working and catching up on my University assignments. I also have some assignments that were assigned to do during the break. I will be making more frequent visits on Wikipedia but not as much as how I used to during the Christmas and summer breaks. Sorry for the inconvenience. :( --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 05:32, 11 February 2008
I'm ready to help, but, although I have seen a considerable number of his films (relatively nothing compared to the huge number of films he starred in), I suffer from serious lack of knowledge regarding Kamal Hassan's career, achievements etc. I'll be happy to help with some copyediting, format etc. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 06:08, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Fashion (film) edit

An editor has nominated Fashion (film), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fashion (film) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:59, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Kamal Haasan edit

Hi there, thank you for requesting me to join your collaborative effort.

I'll contribute my might..mostly in terms of copyediting and adding references. However, my style of work usually goes with creation of new content and adding suitable references simultaneously. With this article, it is going to be a bit different though. Sadly, my lack of total inclination towards this article might delay my efforts a bit.

I hope to get to this article's discussion page and check whats going on there and I hope that the work can be divided among the collaborators to ensure quicker progress. Something like, each working on a section.

Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 14:53, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kollywoodtoday images edit

After taking a look through the images in Category:Images from Kollywoodtoday.com, it appears that in several cases, these are actually screenshots or are promotional images, and are not actually owned by Kollywoodtoday. Looking through the site, it appears that many other images on the site fit into this category. In fact, their disclaimer and terms and conditions make no claim that they own all the images on that site. In light of this, I'm going to have to delete all the images in that category. If you have reason to dispute this, please let me know on my talk page right away. Thanks! --Yamla (talk) 00:35, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey buddy, I don't get your question. What exactly do you mean by mega family? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 03:26, 16 February 2008

Thanks buddy!! I am so humbled for your kind words and that you feel that I am worthy enough to receive that barnstar. I am very happy today as my favorite actress Kareena Kapoor won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award, and you giving me a barnstar for my work just adds more joy. Once again, thanks. -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 20:39, 23 February 2008
Hey buddy, thanks for the offer but I don't think the article should be submitted for a GA as of now. I still need to add more stuffs and fix things, and also there will still be events that relate to the film, such as award functions, etc. Once everything is done (probably by June or July), then maybe I will consider it for a GA. Honestly, I never thought of nominating it for a GA. My number one priority is to improve all the top Bollywood actors' pages during the summer. I also plan to nominate Kareena Kapoor's article for a GA but not now. Maybe by the end of this year or next year. Considering, I am in university most of the time these days, I am also not free. Hope you don't mind. -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 22:33, 23 February 2008
Hey Mr.Hero, I have been noticing that you have been adding films to actors' pages. Please DO NOT ADD films until A) we find official confirmation from either the actor or the producers/director of the film AND B) when the film actually begins filming. The latter is very important as films are announced here and then, and some films get shelved later, for e.g. Lajjo by Mani Ratnam. It is no point of creating articles that will be later deleted. Hope you understand. Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 00:39, 14 March 2008
Mr.Hero, I don't know what you're asking me to change in Vidya Balan's article. Would you be so kind enough to do it yourself?? Thanks -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 03:44, 18 March 2008
I don't think the article for the film should be created yet until official confirmation is given by Priyadarshan, Shahrukh Khan or Kareena Kapoor. Furthermore, the source is not reliable. It can just be a gossip. I found the same article on The Times of India and Mumbai Mirror here and here but let us not jump to conclusions just because they are reliable sources (newspaper). Some of the news that come in newspapers are false too. I am a big fan of Khan and Kapoor, and neither of them have mentioned that they have signed this film or have begun filming for it. Take a look at this. You see, sources indicated that Kajol was signed on for the role but was later replaced by Kareena. It's a good thing that we didn't create an article for the film since those were just rumours. Rajkumar Hirani's quote helped clear up the rumour. I am going to remove the film from Khan's page too. We can add it once we find official confirmation. Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 03:12, 20 March 2008

When I saw Aegan I thought it was some article on a Greek island! At present, with the latest GA's and the Kollywood image licensing Tamil cinema is developing well on wikipedia and stealing Bollywood's thunder at the moment. Hopefully some of the older Tamil films can be expanded too to try to even up the quality a bit. There are far too many existing stubs on Tamil movies I think. Keep it up. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:48, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mrs. Doubtfire/Avvai Shanmugi edit

Actually you are right. I read an interview of Kamal, once, in which he said that he either came up with the idea before Mrs. Doubtfire or independently of it. And so saying that his film is "inspired by Mrs. Doubtfire" is inaccurate as the personnel involved in this film (Kamal) has not said that he was guided/inspired by Mrs. Doubtfire. If this interview (which I read online somewhere) could be found and appended to the sentence where mention is made of Avvai Shanmugi/Chachi 420, then it will prevent casual editors from wrongly associating the film with Mrs. Doubtfire. Kamal Haasan --> most number of Filmfare Awards received? edit

This statement in the first paragraph of Kamal Haasan seems dubious. The actor to win the award the most number of times, for best acting, is Dilip Kumar (followed by Shahrukh Khan). It is a Hindi film award, so I cannot envision how Kamal Haasan could have won a substantial number of awards here. Could you confirm the statement made in the article or remove it if it is not true? AppleJuggler (talk) 03:51, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I find no evidence of him winning the most number of Filmfare awards. Even as far as the Filmfare South Awards go, he is in a tie with Vikram for best acting. The paragraph in the Kamal Haasan article should be amended if it is false that he has not clearly won more Filmfare awards than any other Indian actor. Film assessment classes edit

Hi. I noticed you were creating a number of film articles. While doing so, you are adding project templates, which is great. The problem is that when you are adding the templates, you are marking these new articles as "start" class. The criteria for "start" class is: The article has a meaningful amount of good content, but it is still weak in many areas, and may lack a key element such as a standard infobox. For example an article on Africa might cover the geography well, but be weak on history and culture. Has at least one serious element of gathered materials, including any one of the following:

  • a particularly useful picture or graphic
  • multiple links that help explain or illustrate the topic
  • a subheading that fully treats an element of the topic
  • multiple subheadings that indicate material that could be added to complete the article

Since none of these newly created articles meet that criteria, they should only be marked as "stub" class, or that assessment be left for the assessment department of the respective projects. Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 11:07, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Facebook edit

Why would you link to Facebook in the External links section? External links is supposed to give more information about the article at hand, not link to the subject of the article. The website is already linked to in the infobox; the external links is supposed to contain links that add information about the article. The CrunchBase site is useful for this. Gary King (talk) 18:48, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

And, I don't see why you have to call me out personally like that in your edit summary. Gary King (talk) 18:56, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well it will be a great shame if you leave. Yes I frequently wonder if I am wasting time editing on here, which is why some days I barely edit or don't at all. Given the amount of work we do on here, you;d think people would be a bit more forthcoming wouldn't you!!! However there is so much that needs doing that I really feel the need to continue editing. If I was paid for the work I do I would be working much harder and as often there isn't an incentive for me to work as I could be. I understand this, in this respect but I hope you will continue to visit the site and edit from time to time and change your mind that it may be worth it after all. I for one think the coverage of Hindi and Tamil film on wikipedia has revolutionized knoweldge of these cinemas across the world and people are now given a chance to read about these films and actors which very few of us know about in "the west". I see you, Shahid, Mspraveen, Bollywooddreamz and several of the other Indian film editors as instrumental in bringing this about and showing to the world just what Indian cinema is about -every reason to continue ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:01, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

He does have a point. I can point out that, until recently, there was exactly one single article on the emirate of Umm al-Quwain, and it was only two pages long in printout. And this is a self-governing state, mind you. There are a lot of subjects of encyclopedic value which are currently woefully underrepresented, that being the worst one I personally know of. Certainly, Indian cinema is among them. Given the importance of that medium to India, it is also a rather important subject to wikipeida, and I welcome seeing individuals willing to help develop any of our vital content, particularly those I personally don't know much about. Films edit

Hey buddy, sorry for taking long to answer to your response. I was kind of busy with University these past couple of days. I have no problems with people creating new articles for films but I hate it when people just create articles for new films as soon as they are announced on a site, regardless its realibility. Even when, I first created Main Aur Mrs. Khanna, a user proposed it for deletion since the film hadn't begun filming yet. Take a look at this People do not take into consideration that film announcements can sometimes just be rumours. Even if the announcement is true, some films later on get shelved, for e.g. Lajjo. The user who proposed the MAMK article for deletion gave a similar reason to this. Since you gave a source indicating that Blue is filming, you can create the article if you want. I don't mind. The reason why I removed some of the films you added to actors' filmographies was because of the reason I gave to you. Regards --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 02:12, 1 April 2008

Cinema of India edit

Hi, You made a lot of changes today, without providing any logic. I have undone all this. However, I understand that you mainly wanted to make a change in the section of Tamil Film Industry. Please go ahead and do the same, if you have reasons to do so, without disturbing other sections. Thanks. Hope you understand the issue. GDibyendu (talk) 19:30, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

New topic edit

Hey buddy, honestly, I think it would be better to put the film in the actor's filmography later because:

  • a) The source is unreliable
  • b) When the cast begins filming for it, we would have official confirmation that the project is on.
  • c) The film might get shelved.

Like I said before, I have no problems with people creating new articles for films but I hate it when people just create articles for new films as soon as they are announced on a site, regardless its realibility. Even when, I first created Main Aur Mrs. Khanna, a user proposed it for deletion since the film hadn't begun filming yet. Take a look at this You said that most of the announced films are true but sometimes they can just be rumours. Even if the announcement is true, some films later on get shelved, for e.g. Lajjo.
