Re: A note of appreciation edit

I like contributing to the Indian music-related articles esp. Indian film score composers and playback singers. My next plan was to make Ilaiyaraaja article a good article. But, I found it's already a great article. So, I looked at the history of the page. And I realized that you have almost single-handedly created the entire article. Really great work! The "star" is called a barnstar. See Wikipedia:Barnstars. There's no criteria as such -- whenever you appreciate an editor's hard work, you can award him/her a barnstar. utcursch | talk 15:08, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ilayaraja pic edit

I was following the new restrictive fairuse guidelines on the WP:FUC. Free content is one of the five pillars of Wikipedia. The idea is that a article better off having no pictures, than use fairuse pictures. Recent changes to the image policy do not allow faiuse images of living persons that show how the person looks like. See Fair_use#Counterexamples #8. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 18:33, 18 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

IPA for Ilaiyaraaja edit

[ɪləjəɹɑːdʒɑː] would be more ideal as the 'raajaa' is pronounced with elongated sound. I'd be glad to help you in the Ilayaraja page, let me know if you wud ever need any help. You can use the present one, it is perfect. Sudharsansn (talk contribs) 06:40, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Will definitely look into it soon. I've been keeping busy with all the Sri Lankan crisis related articles :-) Thanks Sudharsansn (talk contribs) 08:18, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Applejugger, I appreciate your offer for help. You can begin by looking at WP:NCSLC which you can use as a notice board for incidents. There is a big crisis looming over all LTTE related articles because of vandalizm and sockpuppetry. You can also look up at the TfD for a proposed deletion page and voice your concern against deletion of a template. With regd to Ilayaraja, I will come in soon. I am a Carnatic musician too, so I can gladly help improve the Raja Sir page :-) Looking fwd to catch up with you. Sudharsansn (talk contribs) 09:21, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion edit

You are very welcome. I would suggest you use copy-paste function wherever possible :). That's what I do. You could see many music-related featured artiles at Wikipedia:Featured_articles#Music. Many of them have tables in them. Just edit the page and copy-paste the code into your article. I learn many wiki features by looking at featured content and watching what experienced editors do. I am still learning. :) -- Ganeshk (talk) 07:22, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Talk-page factoring edit

You talk-page formatting will make it really difficult for people posting messages. Many often use the "+" button next edit page. That will start a new section instead of going into Hoopla. I suggest you do your testing in sub-page like User:AppleJuggler/sandbox. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:49, 23 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes. It will stay there. You can can create any number of sub-pages under your userpage. All user page guidelines and policies apply to the sub-pages too (No fairuse images etc). There is no button as such. But you could create a link on your user page to your sandbox something like [[User:AppleJuggler/sandbox|My sandbox]]. -- Ganeshk (talk) 05:16, 23 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

photos edit

Best way to post a photo is get a screenshot or a cover such as an album cover. This usually can be disputed. A photograph of your own would probably be the best. When stating the summary, put who owns the copyright of the photo, who created it, where it was obtained from and tag it correctly.--D-Boy 03:01, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks and good to hear from you. I will try to spend some time on the article too (but really, I'm not so sure as things are busy at work). Yes I understand it might be difficult to get a free-use image. Good luck (with the pic hunt and everything), and good work! Cheers. P.S: What is your favourite album of Ilayaraaja's. Just curious. Cribananda 09:20, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Of course it is not easy to pick one :-) Needless to say, I like all the songs you just listed. Some of my favourites (whatever comes to mind off the top of my head, I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it) are: Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal, Idhayathai Thirudadhe (remade from the Telugu Geethanjali), Udhaya Geetham, and Sindhu Bairavi, and well, a whole bunch more. A speical favourite (for many reasons) is Seevi Sinekkeduthu from Vetri Vizha.

In terms post '91 recommendations, I would think Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, and to some extent, Friends. Cribananda 18:04, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cool, in fact I was specifically going to suggest Thendral varum. I don't think his post '91 compositions are his best though. '80s were his prime time. Btw, I see you have Jobim's poetry written on your home page. Brings back memories of when I was at the cafe at Rio de Janeiro where Jobim had written Garota de Ipanema. Wonderful feeling :-) Do you live in France, btw? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cribananda (talkcontribs) 17:17, 4 December 2006 (UTC).Reply
As for your question about Vijay - no, I'm not a fan. In fact, I'm not a fan of most things today that is related to Tamil movies :-) No matter how many Tamil movies I watch, I am shocked at how much worse they keep getting and cast myself never to watch one again...They weren't so bad until even the late 90s.Cribananda 00:56, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bhagyaraj rocks!! edit

I love Bhagyaraj's movies too. Funny, cutting, and socially reflective. I think he was just in the wrong place (Kollywood, where people would rather watch someone catching bullets with his fingers).

I agree about Kamal Hassan as well. His recent movies have been a let down. I have never been his fan but I think he is an excellent comedy actor. Glad you checked out Pudhu Pudhu. I have always thought of the music as extremely under-rated.

You obviously listen to a lot more Bossa Nova than I do. I bought a collection when I was in Rio and that's about all I have listened to. The Brazilians have very good music, of course. And they know how to live life :-)

As for French directors - yes I have seen a few French movies (La Regle du jeu is my all time favourite movie in any language); and I like to watch a good movie wherever it is from (I find French movies to be more lively and entertaining than, say, Italian movies, which are more often than not depressing and sad). A movie that I saw recently and thoroughly enjoyed was a Bhutanese movie called Travellers and Magicians. If you haven't seen it already, I would recommend it. Image:Dewan negara.jpg edit

Hi, under American copyright law, no permission is required to use an image under the terms of fair use. American law imposes strict requirements for a use to qualify as fair use, however, and Wikipedia policy imposes some further restrictions that you should be aware of. Thanks, and HTH. :) Johnleemk | Talk 12:23, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Of course the Malaysian authorities could question the usage of the image, but as Wikipedia's servers are located in the United States, American laws apply. As a result, the Malaysian authorities would not be able to compel Wikipedia to take down the image. Fair use as a legal doctrine runs foul of copyright law in many jurisdictions, and Malaysia is probably no exception, but since it is a de facto right in most countries to make use of material in the way we have done with fair use, there probably shouldn't be a problem. Just FYI, IANAL, so if you're interested in any further clarification, it might be wise to seek the advice of the community at WP:VP or the mailing list. Image:Ilaiyaraaja.jpg edit

Hi,

This image of Ilaiyaraaja uploaded by you carries a license that says it is Wikipedia-only permission. Such licenses are not allowed on Wikipedia, and the image being non-free may be deleted. Since the image fails the fair-use criteria since a free alternative can be created, it can't be used as a fair-use image. If you created it yourself and want to release it to Public Domain, use {{PD-self}} as image license. Contact me if you need any help. — Ambuj Saxena () 13:51, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

In that case, I would suggest using {{PD-author}}, with a quote from the author on the page stating verbatim that he is releasing the image in the public domain. Alternately (actually preferably), you can ask him to mail you the photograph with the permission, and then you should forward the mail to permissions (at) wikimedia (dot) org. This would be archived as a proof of permission. Copyright laws are very convoluted, but for this case, I think simplification can be done. If you are sure that the concert was open to photography, you can go ahead with the tagging. — Ambuj Saxena () 14:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Ilaiyaraja_at_the_recording_studio_3.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Ilaiyaraja_at_the_recording_studio_3.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BigDT 02:26, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

My apologies edit

Again, for the edit summary. It was not aimed at anyone, I assure you, merely a brief moment of exasperation.

Please take a moment to see it from my perspective. I find breaking the law - yes, there is no justification for so many fair use sound clips in such manner, that is not just against policy, it is illegal, a violation of copyright law - not a little wrong, and infuriating. Especially when it is left to me to clear up the problem, and I have already had to do something similar over twenty times on twenty different articles on one day, maybe.

My apologies for losing my cool, but such violations of both law and policy are far less permissible. Special:Upload explicitly says to give fair use rationales, and to read such policies as Wikipedia:Non-free content before uploading fair use media. I cannot remember who uploaded the images, and I do not really care, but while I apologise for the momentary lapse of self-control, what I was dealing with was a far more serious problem. Indeed, I have spent many long hours clearing up fair use violations, and that was probably the worst I have personally seen. Best, Moreschi Talk 16:03, 1 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

"My duties", as you so term them, do not have to extend to cleaning out fair use galleries of that size. Indeed, they should not. In the slightest. Before uploading, it's clearly spelled out that fair use rationales have to be provided, and links to the fair use policy are also given, which stipulate that minimal fair use is required. My frustration, which was not directed at anyone, is due to being compelled to do completely unnecessary work.
The policies also detail that fair use, when it is used, has to be closely linked to the article content. They cannot be there for decorative purposes. Quite why anyone ever thought differently bewilders me. If any adminstrators passed by the article in the state it was in, they should be troutslapped. Fair use just does not work that way.
If you wish any of the deleted samples back for rationale-providing, I'll undelete them for you upon request. When a couple of samples are put back in the article, please note that they have to be related to the text, closely, as at Concerto delle donne. If you come across fair use galleries anywhere else, please let me know and I'll swat them as well. Best, Moreschi Talk 14:08, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Seeking opinion from regular editors on reference pattern edit

References: Notes and citations section; change in reference and notes temporarily ceased; WP:FOOT says I am not doing wrong; Separate Notes and Citation sections

Opinion is sought from regular editors of the article Hinduism regarding the splitting of Notes and references section. This is a short gist of the discussions going on in the above mentioned talk links: Having a separate "Notes" (for explanatory remarks) and "Citations" (for direct citations), although permitted, is relatively rare in Wikipedia, and also in academic journals. The main rationale behind doing this is to distinguish a series of explanatory remarks from the series of citations (please see Rabindranath Tagore, Demosthenes for examples).

This sandbox gives a glimpse of how the article would look if we split the sections (the sandbox is under work, so may not be perfect). This link shows how the article looks with combined section. This may give an idea how it looked when I started working on references. I converted many references to Harvard format, apart from splitting the sections.

Opinion for regular editors are sought regarding the application of splitting of two section for this article. Please do so in Talk:Hinduism in the section Talk:Hinduism#Seeking_opinion_from_regular_editors_on_reference_pattern. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:04, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Moondram Pirai edit

Hi,
I am Chinese, not Japanese, normally they do not really "translate" foreign film titles, just use katakana letters to write very similar to the pronounciation of original version. in this case - should be - << - muun-do ra-mu pi-ra-i - >>!!

Good luck !! Mori Riyo (talk) 08:01, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I found that you paid good attention to the details,

This movie was shown to selected students of movie academies
in China, because Lao She had written a novel --
<<The Crescent Moon>> with very very similar
settings. but it was believed L.S. had neither saw the movie
in his life-time nor knew the Srilankan writer by any ways.

& the novel was also made into a Chinese film by late
90s (I could be wrong by this).

For that reasone some chinese people do know about Moondram Pirai

Have I watched the movies ?
Yes and no. A friend of mine (turkish) was studying for directing 7~8 years ago - 1 day we did lendborrow an archive film from the library - with trailers of both movies and we had a discussion about them. Its a shame there were only trailers on the tape otherwise we could had finished watching the entire 2 movies at the night.

Having said that L.S. (pronounce: Lou(d:without "d") - Sir(but with "sh" as consonant) does not know the film director, but there could be the other way around, since he is the 3rd most famous Chinese writer after Mao Dun and Ba Jin. I am pretty sure his works were translated into Hindi / Tamil after his death (1966 - the year "Cultural Revolution" started in my country - I was not even born then).

All the best with your movie researches !!             Mori Riyo (talk)

Fair use rationale for Image:Ilaiyaraaja2.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ilaiyaraaja2.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Fair use rationale for Image:Apoorva Ragangal.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Apoorva Ragangal.JPG. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 06:10, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Bhagyaraj.jpg} edit

Thank you for uploading Image:Bhagyaraj.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Image copyright problem with Image:Sadma.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Sadma.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

File permission problem with File:Ilaiyaraja at the recording studio.jpg edit

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Ilaiyaraja at the recording studio.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hekerui (talk) 09:02, 1 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Saagara Sangamam.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Saagara Sangamam.jpg. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 07:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:Raja Paarvai.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Raja Paarvai.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
