Is Mohandas still the artist ? Tintin (talk) 07:02, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
They are two people. They used to be the writer/artist from the very beginning. Tintin (talk) 07:16, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
I think creem is the slang for 'hreem'. Never seen the forest named. One thing missing is the date of the first comic. It was some time in the late 80s. Puttalu is always mentioned as Luttappi's uncle.
An interesting thing is that in the advertisements Mayavi appeared the way that Luttappi looks now, but in the first edition of the cartoon he assumed the current (more human) shape. Tintin (talk) 10:05, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Dakini is definitely a witch. In early days, she used to show much more prathapam but after Kuttoosan was introduced, she was moved to the background and depicted the way she is now. In the first two lines, shouldn't the mention of Manorama appear with that of Balarama (ie, in the first line) ? Tintin (talk) 13:44, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

The first Mayavi had Raju & Radha saving Mayavi from Dakini's bottle. Kuttoosan and Luttappi appeared much later, and both were introduced in the same issue. IIRC, Vikraman and Muthu came before Kuttoosan. There were even some editions which had none of these people. But this is all from memory and we should not add it into the article. I was studying in the seventh or eighth standard when Mayavi first appeared !

I'll change the Manorama thing myself. Tintin (talk) 14:00, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Fine. What next ? Kapeesh ?  :-) Tintin (talk) 14:16, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Dear Deepu,

Thank you for your co-operation in the Alniko issue. Hope, we can work without any nonsense edit wars now. I need your help on certain things.. Is there an editor which will help me in editing wiki easily ? If so, can you suggest me what to do to install that s/w in my PC ?

Btw, the Thiruvananthapuram district article is almost ready.. It needs an extensive peer review now. Before going for the official peer review, I request you to review it once..

Discussion

A user is trying to get myself and another Hindu user out of the way in some sort of "Mediation". He has resorted to calling us fascists [1] merely because we support the Sangh and find sources to back up claims we make on wiki. I'm certain this is an attempt to get me out of his way so he can smear the Sangh any way he wants. Bakaman Bakatalk 14:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Deepu

Thanks for your note.I am not sure whether Wales knows about it;I have not been in touch with him.I was waiting for Bhadani to contact me but he seems to be busy.I think we would have to request a nomination form from the Nobel Foundation and get one of the qualified nominators to do the rest.Perhaps you may have some suggestion.Regards(Vr 06:24, 19 August 2006 (UTC))

By the way are you still an administrator. If so I should like to report a problem.I have been having enormous difficulties with someone who happens to be a Mani Shankar Aiyar diehard fan.I also happen to be a Tamil(and Iyer) but I have not been particularly enamoured with his usage of pejorative terms like "Brillaint" amd "well educated".He goen on to draw an anology with Gandhi!!!!

Roots of Kochi-Thiruvananthapuram edit war

A Copy of the message to Blnguyen

Dear Blnguyen

First let me state to avoid any confusion, I and User:Alniko are fellow graduate students at the same institute.

I am writing on behalf of User:Alniko who has been unfairly blocked. He never got a chance to say what he wanted to. On the other hand the blocking gave a free hand to User:Rajithmohanand User:Sathyalal who concertedly edit Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kerala pages to insert false data.

Habit of posting false data by User:Rajithmohan

User:Rajithmohan is a habitual manipulator of Wikipages. This has been pointed out many times by many others line User:Manu krishnan. A patent example of such manipulation is seen if you see the editing of Thiruvananthapuram by User:Rajithmohan dated

(cur) (last) 09:03, 6 July 2006 User:Rajithmohan(Talk | contribs) [2] A screenshot of the manipulated Thiruvanthapuram page is given below.

File:Screenshottvi4.png

The population is stated as 1.3 million. If you click on the link cited it shows the population as 1 million.

Screenshot of the weblink cited as reference for population data in the above Thiruvanthapuram page.

File:Screenshotrlf3.png

Several times User:Alniko had pointed out this, but he was confronted with false accusation of vandalism and threats of being reported as a vandal.

As User:Alniko pointed out to me users User:Rajithmohan supported by User:Sathyalal and at times User:Samaleks went onto revert to this FALSE version many times as you can verify by following the edits after 09:03, 6 July 2006 of the Thiruvananthapuram page.

However they forced to edit out the vandalism after this manipulation of Wikipedia reached websites.

The reason for this edit as User:Alniko told me is that there is lot of parochial political activity in Thiruvananthapuram against Kochi. User:Alniko is ready to send you news reports available at websites of established Indian newspapers. User:Rajithmohan and User:Sathyalal seem to be acting with this motivation. They have been trying to edit the Kochi, Kerala and Thiruvananthapuram pages to glorify Thiruvananthapuram by adding blatant lies like above stated ones and to show Kochi in poor light.

User:Alniko got to know about this distortion of Kochi, Kerala and Thiruvananthapuram pages from User:Manu krishnan and has been active in neutralizing the vandalism spread by User:Rajithmohan, User:Sathyalal and a couple of others.

Request to Administrators

User:Alniko requests you to keep a constant vigil on Kochi, Kerala and Thiruvananthapuram pages to prevent manipulations by political gangs.

User:Alniko would like to add more data on Kochi's population data which has been deliberately distorted by User:Rajithmohan and User:Sathyalal. User:Alniko requests you to remove the block on him and allow him to state his case with solid factual data.

Kochi

Can you mail me your postal address if it is not a problem ? Take a look at it anyway. Tintin (talk) 13:30, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

IIT KGP Pic promotion

Hi,

Even I am against unilateral promotions. But see when I nominated it. I nominated it on 23rd July (almost 1 month back). I usually promote images in 7~10 days, but since nobody participated in the voting for the whole month, nor was there any other activity, I ran out of options. If you feel that more people will participate in it, I am all for restarting the nomination process. Overall, its quite sad that only a handful of people are interested in the portal...just me, you and Dwaipayan. Yes, probably an addition to the collaboration page would help. Should we explore its possibilities in the talk page? — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:19, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Have you been thinking of the archived nom page as the cadidature page. I just saw you voted for Toda Tribal Hut, which has been selected (and its discussion archived) long back. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:26, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Haha

I really enjoyed the metaphor. :) Bakaman Bakatalk 21:21, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

I think I'm gonna take an actual wikibreak now for a few days.Bakaman Bakatalk 14:31, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Kochi

Hi Deepu,

Here are my observations.

  1. Confirm if the IPA of the city is correctly mentioned.
  2. Since 2003 however, an economic rejuvenation has arrested the morbid decline, leading to a spurt in the city's growth. - Can this be made more neutral.
  3. Why are dates mentioned with "AD" suffix for the first three dates, and then the policy discontinued?
  4. The Raja of Kochi had... - Is there a problem using the word "king"?
  5. There is inconsistant super-scriptisation of "th" as a century suffix.
  6. ...Kochi as the safest harbour in the peninsula... - Reference not neutral enough to support the claim.
  7. A background (as mentioned by hydcat in the PR) on the PM of Kochi would be helpful in clarifying things to the uninitiated.
  8. There needs to be consistancy of spacing before and after the emdashes. Preferably there shouldn't be any space, though it is hardly a crime to have them. But bottomline is - Consistancy.
  9. Ref. no. 13 does not back the claim - Over the years, the city has witnessed rapid commercialisation, and has today grown into the commercial capital of Kerala.
  10. Only first appearance of mention of measurement units need to be wikified. I see "km" being over-wikified.
  11. All numbers below ten need to be written as words.
  12. What is the reference for the soil related info in the article?
  13. Ref no. 16, on inspection, seems to provide an overview of the whole state of Kerala, and not just Kochi. A clarification may be warrented.
  14. GDP growth rate of 8.3% isn't very high. In fact, it is close to national average. That doesn't make it much notable. Am I missing something?
  15. The civic administration section needs references.
  16. Do you mean to say there are more women than men in Kochi...I am coming right away. Will be staying at your place.
It is true for the whole of Kerala, but it hasn't helped me a great deal. Tintin (talk) 12:08, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Comparing with IIT-KGP, the ratio is nearly 23 times better! Our ratio is 44 girls for 1,000 boys. BTW, good progress made on the article by Deepu. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 13:54, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
  17. Try to restrict the number of major newspapers to a maximum of three, ranked per circulation. Ditto with news channels.

This looks enough (actually more than enough). — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 07:04, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I found the economic rejuvenation sentence a bit poetic. If it is ripped from Kolkata, keep it. Regarding verifying the IPA, probably Sundar might help. You may also post it on the notice-board and ask for help. I did not find any problem with the sound rendering, though I am not sure of the correct pronunciation. Other issues are still to be tackled. Like inconsistancies in "th" as suffix, and use of "AD". Although the "Education" section doesn't claim anything that may require citation, if a relevant reference exists, like a directory of schools/colleges in Kochi that can be referred for details (this is entirely optional and subject to availability). "Certain species of dolphins are also present in the backwaters" would be a more appropriate sentence. Other things look fine. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 16:29, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Ciao, Gabi

Nollywood

Yeah, I know it is messed up to compare Nollywood 2006 with the others being 2003. The only reason I jumped into this was because someone was bellyaching that they couldn't read the article in the Economist. You should be able to go to the Economist and get a 24 hours free trial if you want to see the article. (It is pretty painless, you just have to watch a stupid flash advert.)

I was kind of hoping that when I put the Economist numbers in there, some enterprising person would update the other numbers....

Anyway, I don't have time nor inclination to track down other numbers for this. I just added the "facts" that some people had requested. (How do you measure the size of a film industry anyway? Number of movies seems a poor measure. Sure Nollywood made a zillion movies, but my impresion from the Economist article was that they were mostly shot on VHS tapes. Total dollars might be better. Then I would imaging Hollywood would be number one, but maybe not. I don't know.)

If you have refs that contradict the Economist article I would say work them in to the articles however you can. -- Rangek 15:09, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Kochi discussion

Had a quick look. Here are some points:

  • "The mainland Kochi remained the capital of the princely state since the 18th century"; again, "From 1503 to 1663, Kochi was ruled by Portugal." Was kochi ruled both by the princely state and Portuguese?
  • Chronology is not maintained in the "History" when you are describing the construction of the harboue (that began in 1920). In the next sentences, the reader is again taken back to 1866, 1883 etc.
  • I again ask if there were something significant after 1967.
  • "This Portuguese period was difficult for the Jews installed in the region, since the Inquisition was active in Portuguese India". Could not understand what was inquisition. Can it be slightly expanded?
  • "Kochi hosted the grave of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, who was buried at St. Francis Church...". Tell why this is significant. "the first explorer to set sail for India" or something like that can be added.
  • City official names to be wikilinked.
  • Probably IATA and ICAO codes are not needed. They are needed in the article on the airport.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:11, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Aliyo, Olakayethi. Saadanam kollam, but vayikanakaariyam orthitu
Madi pidichirikkathe mariyadakku vayikkeda :-) I don't know. We studied about Koonan kurisu sathyam in the school but have no idea how important it is. Same for Madhavan chettan. I have the book 'Crest of the peacock' (the first one in the references in the Madhava article). Bought it second hand for 30/- or 40/- some two years ago but haven't opened it since then. Tintin (talk) 10:23, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
I think you can. Tintin (talk) 15:52, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Deepu, rather than an one-sentence ending of the "History" section, you can add some general comments. Like, the population grew to reach... (better still, if you know when it became a million plus city). In fact, the economic stagnation thing and rejuvination can be added here also (see Kolkata). Anything on the reaction to the change of name? Was not there any movement lately? These are not absolutely needed, but the history section without recent history appears to be incomplete. However, do not force anything. It is problem, I know.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:18, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I get back from wikibreak and during my time golfing I am now accused of being a sock. Just because I share the same POV as the controversial editor Netaji. Kochi

Where is the IPA? Did you mean the audio file? If so, I need to bring my headphones to check that. In any case, I'm not an expert in IPA. Why don't you ask at Talk:IPA linking the audio file? -- Sundar \talk \contribs 07:17, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

You could also ask around in WP:RD/L. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 07:45, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Yet another theory is that Kochi is derived from the Malayalam word Kaci meaning 'harbour'.

Are you familiar with this word ? Tintin (talk) 06:00, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Maybe it's old Malayalam. Looks suspiciously similar to Azhi (as in azhimukham) though. The references look good. Tintin (talk) 06:31, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Nah, forget it. Azhi is bay, not harbour. Tintin (talk) 06:34, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes History is pretty long. Some suggestions: Why do not you remove the names of those first prime ministers and chief ministers? (Paravur T.K Narayana Pillai,Ikkanda Warrier etc.) Are they that famous? I mean flow of history is more necessary than mentioning names. Ok. I have done some ruthless chopping in the history section. Sangamagrama

http://pramode-ce.livejournal.com/37784.html places Sangamagrama near Irinjalakuda. Another at Kudalur. Not sure where this is. Kudallur points to two placed in Palakkad district.

It may be safer to drop Madhavan chettan from the article. 'Near Cochin' is ambiguous and can cover many distant places. Tintin (talk) 06:16, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Many of the Indian editors have matured over the past, so hopefully they can contribute too. Best of luck on the FAC. I'm sorry to see Nepal in such a bad state, my only suggestion would be to revert back to the time that Nepal was made a FA and update the recent history along with the Government section. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:09, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Kochi

The snippet on the Indian Navy's Southern Naval Command (SNC), belongs to the Cochin article, and not the Indian Navy article, is because:

1) Is very much relevant to the City of Cochin. The SNC and it's associated entities, occupy a significant portion of Willingdon Island as well as Fort Cochin (INS Dronacharya). 2) SNC existed for many decades in the city. 3) It's the largest Naval Base in Southern India. The SNC is to Cochin, what The Pearl Harbor is to Honolulu. 4) A military installation, such as SNC, makes Cochin a strategically relevant city. 5) The economy of Cochin is linked to it in many ways. 6) The city depended on the Navy run airport on Willingdon island, before the Cochin International Airport was built. 7) There was no mention of the Southern Naval Command in the Cochin Article.

Thank you for understanding.
