Packard, Kentucky

Hi I hope you are doing well. Question: Is the birthplace of actress Patricia Neal Packard, Kentucky a ghost town or an unincorporated community? Pat Neal in her autobiography said Packard is a ghost town. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 11:09, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for helping with Packard, Kentucky. I found out many of these unincorporated communities can be interesting do to the history and notable people. Okay here is another one: Miami Station, Missouri=an United States Senator from Texas William A. Blakley was born there. Is it an unincorporated community or a ghost town? User:Nyttend/ZIP/AL

edit

Thanks for the notice. You're correct — the page was vandalised in March 2007, just slightly more than a month before it was nominated at AFD; the vandal removed 284 ZIP codes and made changes to others. Per your request, I've created User:TheCatalyst31/Alabama; it has a history of two edits. The first edit is a copy/paste of the second edit in the original page's history (the first just had 11 codes, but the second was a full list), while the second is a copy/paste of the edit just before the 284 lines were removed. Nyttend (talk) 23:08, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The vandal removed several entire sections, but s/he also cut random individual ones or twos from other sections as well. Nyttend (talk) 23:22, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Zipcodes in Wisconsin

edit

In Wikipedia:WikiProject Wisconsin in the library section under resources is the list of Zipcodes in Wisconsin. This was added on to WP-Wisconsin before the list was deleted. The following communities need to be done:

I am not sure why they were missed or omitted-Thank you-RFD (talk) 22:00, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for your comment-RFD (talk) 22:21, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry about the orphan tags-I add the unincorporated communities to the town and county pages and to the disamg pages. The changes to the Wisconsin county navigation templates come up on the recent changes page of WP-Wisconsin. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 12:29, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2010 August newsletter

edit

We have our final eight! The best of luck to those who remain. A bumper newsletter this week as we start our home straight.

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle.   Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight.   Resolute (submissions) was not far behind.   Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round.   Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles.   Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals.   Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to   Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to   Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Finnsville, Wisconsin

edit

I am back again-would you please look at the article about Finnsville, Wisconsin? I did some research and came across 2 photos about Buggers&Finn's Blackbear Inn near Bayfield, Wisconsin and it has this sign about Finnsville population 2. I do not know if Finnsville is an unincorporated community or a resort owner's joke. If the article needs to be deleted that would be a good idea. Maybe the state of Wisconsin and Bayfield County considers this to be a unincorporated community. I think it is a resort owner's joke. Please let myself know-Thank you-RFD (talk) 15:19, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Adminship?

edit

I think you're ready for adminship. You've been doing editing here for a long time. In that time you have plenty of edits, articles on DYK/GA/FA, a broad experience base, solid nominations and rationales for deletion, and your deleted edits look appropriate. In other words, you have a broad background. Believe me, adminship is extremely helpful when you do new page editing so that you can delete those ugly vandalism articles that come up. We can always use another upstanding admin! Should I draw up my nomination for you? Or would you like to do a review to see what more editors think? Royalbroil 12:50, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Adminship nomination posted

edit
I have suggestions:
  1. Take your time with answering any questions posted for you. There is no time limit.
  2. Do research and dig into the questions.
  3. Be careful and do little to no responding to criticisms of you, and then only if addressed specifically at you.
  4. If it doesn't work out, then withdraw gracefully and learn from the experience.

Good luck, and you're welcome for the nomination! I wouldn't have approached you about if I didn't have a strong feeling that you'd be successful. :) Royalbroil 16:51, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

edit

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to   TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to   Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists –   White Shadows (submissions),   William S. Saturn (submissions),   Staxringold (submissions) and   ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to   Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is   Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is   Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is   Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is   TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is   Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Your contributed article, Waumandee (community), Wisconsin

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Waumandee (community), Wisconsin. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Waumandee, Wisconsin. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Waumandee, Wisconsin - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. jsfouche ☽☾ talk 02:03, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Jsfouche, please study the Political subdivisions of Wisconsin. A town is not a community, it's exactly the opposite - land between communities. I declined the speedy request. Royalbroil 04:48, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

edit

How are things going with the adminship? I hope that you are doing well. Do you take requests for stubs in minor communities? I keep seeing your articles in Wisconsin. I keep photographing places around the state and I'd love to have to skip spending the time the create a stub for the photos. I'd appreciate if you'd do one for Gillingham, Wisconsin on Wisconsin Highway 56. I upload the images then often place them at User:Royalbroil/ToDo if I don't want to spend the time up front. If you take requests - there are several there right now, including a bunch in Upper Michigan. If you accept, you can remove them from my To Do list if you want. I have 134 more images queued on my hard drive just waiting for me to have time to upload them. I started the fall/winter with over 300 queued up. I don't know how many images belong in existing articles. Royalbroil 13:16, 24 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Texas FM/RM route articles

edit

Hi there, I see that you've been assessing the articles that I've been creating regarding Texas FM/RM routes. While I'm not new to Wikipedia, I am new to WP:USRD (which is surprising, considering how much I love roads), and I had a couple of questions.

  • If I'm not mistaken, the only difference between a Stub-class and Start-class article is having all three of the requisite sections (description, history, and junction/exit list). I've created some articles with the stub template in place, but in looking at your assessments, the articles that have contained those sections have had the stub tag removed and have been promoted to Start-class. In the future, if I create an article with all three sections, am I correct in not tagging it as a stub? (I figure another editor, such as you, will give it a second look to assess it anyway.)
  • Given the current stub reduction drive, what is the proper procedure for having a Stub-class article reassessed to see if it can be considered Start-class? That is, if I add in and organize all three sections of information as per standards, am I allowed to reassess it myself, or is there a method to add it to the work queue to have someone else reassess it?

Thanks for your assistance. --Kinu t/c 09:50, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. If you have other suggestions or are interested in doing other things feel free. I just wanted to offer a few suggestions were additional help is needed. Speedy deletion nomination of Area code 539 and 918

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Area code 539 and 918 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Darkskynet (talk) 08:34, 19 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to   The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by   Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to   Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1,   Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and   Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! Hi There is an article about Alvin Straight who droved a lawnboy lawn mower to visit his brother in Mount Zion, Wisconsin. I was wondering if you would like to do the article on Mount Zion, Wisconsin. Many tahnks-RFD (talk) 13:58, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for the article; I did see the movie and I recommend it. Alvin Straight did help make the small community of Mount Zion more well known. Thank you-RFD (talk) 19:38, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

New Wisconsin community articles requested

edit

Would you please start 3 new articles on some unincorporated communities in Wisconsin that I photographed back in October? They can be currently found at User:Royalbroil/ToDo#New. If you start these articles, please add the images and remove them from my To Do area.

On that same vacation, I photographed several communities in Minnesota - most have articles. Should I added images of Dresbach, Minnesota to the article on Dresbach Township or does Minnesota usually get split out? I have images of La Moille, Minnesota if you'd please add that community as well. Thanks! Royalbroil 04:47, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The articles look great, thank you very much! I hope that you are doing well. Royalbroil 00:59, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hannibal, Wisconsin

edit

Hi-I had to revert a good faith edit that an editor made to one of the articles Hannibal, Wisconsin that you started. I left a note on Jeff the quiet's talk page also mentioning that you were working on articles involving unincorporated communities in the US that have zipcodes/post offices. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 11:53, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

edit

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to   The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and   Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round.   Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to   Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to   Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. Good luck! Hi- Would you please take a look at Pleasant Hill, Wisconsin? You may also want to look at the other articles User:Broughtbytheletterz started. I help the editor out with 2 of the articles and suggest he/she read the Political Subdivisions of Wisconsin. Right now, I am going through a periodic Wiki burnt out period. I do not agree at all.

edit

I live in Wisconsin in the Town of Erin by Holy Hill (but you'd probably edit that to Hubertus, WI even though there's a town of Erin sign at the end of my driveway). I do not agree with your edits at all about Ackerville or Alderley. I live by these unincorporated communities and I think I know what I'm talking about! Gee...I've only been here for 21 years is all! It pisses me off when people who think they're smarter than everybody else can just go in and edit whatever they feel like when they don't even know where the places are and can't experience them for themselves. You should take the word of local people, and not just feel free to do whatever you want because you've been on this site longer than some. I do take it offensively and personally because I am 10 minutes from each area, not you. I'm angry. Of course...you don't care either. Thanks...a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Broughtbytheletterz (talkcontribs) 19:06, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

What's the problem, Broughtbytheletterz? Nothing is jumping out at me which is unusual, and I'm willing to help smooth out your issues. There are people here who care; Wikipedia is 100% volunteer so people are all helping out of the goodness of their heart. I live in the eastern half Wisconsin in the country between several unincorporated communities and I'm somewhat familiar with your area (especially after you see that I started and photographed this topic) Perhaps this community may be familiar with you. I invite you to join me at WikiProject Wisconsin and we can improve articles related to our state. Royalbroil 23:22, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
As Royalbroil said, nothing strikes me as unusual about my edits; what I changed in those articles was referenced in reliable sources per the official policy on verifiability. If there was something wrong with my edits, I'm sorry, and I would appreciate if you told me exactly what I did wrong so we can sort it out. I do care about these articles, and want to make sure they are accurate as possible, so I want to know what was wrong with my edits. Also, please try to remain civil in discussions; I understand that you're angry about this, but there's no need to question my motives in editing the pages. WikiCup 2011 March newsletter

edit

We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is   Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H.   Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round three is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! WikiCup 2011 April newsletter

edit

Round 2 of the 2011 WikiCup is over, and the new round will begin on 1 May. Note that any points scored in the interim (that is, for content promoted or reviews completed on 29-30 April) can be claimed in the next round, but please do not start updating your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. Fewer than a quarter of our original contestants remain; 32 enter round 3, and, in two months' time, only 16 will progress to our penultimate round.   Casliber (submissions), who led Pool F, was our round champion, with 411 points, while 7 contestants scored between 200 and 300 points. At the other end of the scale, a score of 41 was high enough to reach round 3; more than five times the score required to reach round 2, and competition will no doubt become tighter now we're approaching the later rounds. Those progressing to round 3 were spread fairly evenly across the pools; 4 progressed from each of pools A, B, E and H, while 3 progressed from both pools C and F. Pools D and G were the most successful; each had 5 contestants advancing.

This round saw our first good topic points this year; congratulations to   Hurricanehink (submissions) and   Nergaal (submissions) who also led pool H and pool B respectively. However, there remain content types for which no points have yet been scored; featured sounds, featured portals and featured topics. In addition to prizes for leaderboard positions, the WikiCup awards other prizes; for instance, last year, a prize was awarded to   Candlewicke (submissions) (who has been eliminated) for his work on In The News. For this reason, working on more unusual content could be even more rewarding than usual!

Sorry this newsletter is going out a little earlier than expected- there is a busy weekend coming up! A running total of claims can be seen here. Okay I am starting articles for Royalbroil's photos using gnis citation. I can not figure out the infobox or coords but this could help a little. Done! The Wisconsin communities on RoyalBroil's to do list are taken care of. That leaves Michigan. Thank you-RFD (talk) 00:11, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll write the Michigan ones. Also, I've noticed that a few of the communities have signs but aren't marked on state highway maps or listed in the GNIS as populated places. Any idea what the status of those is? TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:17, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Juddville is listed as a cemetery; I assumed there are people leaving in the area. RFD (talk) 00:22, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I check the Wisconsin Historical Society and there was no mention of Juddville, Wisconsin. I suspect the town government the state to put up the signs. The history may be obscure that at one point there was a community and the only thing left would be a cemetery and possibly a church. Thank you-RFD (talk) 00:29, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Paulding, Michigan/Hamlets in Illinois category

edit

Many thanks for the article for the Paulding, Michigan article. I wikified that article and also the Bruce Crossing and Mass City articles so that they can be link to their respective township articles. I notice also the deleting of the Hamlets in Illinois category. I recategorized the 4 unincorporated Illinois communities that were in the hamlets in Illinois category to the unincorporated communities in Illinois category so there is now no unincorporated communities listed there. According to the rules, the now empty category will probably be removed within 5-7 days. I also did some minor editing in each of the 4 articles to removed any references to hamlet to prevent any confusion. I hope this helps-thank you again-RFD (talk) 11:56, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also the Donken, Michigan article is wikified to the township article. One comment-it is my understanding Wikipedia also serves as a gazetter. Therefore, I do not feel it is right to merge unincorporated articles into township articles, etc. This violates the concept that Wikipedia also serves as a gazetter. Thank you again-RFD (talk) 12:40, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Porter's Mills, Wisconsin

edit

Hi- An article came through about a ghost town in Eau Claire, Wisconsin: Porter's Mills, Wisconsin. I was able to put this in the county navigation templete with a little frustration at one point. THis just needs coord and infobox. There are 4 other Wisconsin ghost towns: Aurora, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, Jefferson Prairie Settlement (Wisconsin), Muskego Settlement (Wisconsin), and Nya Upsala (Wisconsin) that need coord and infobox. Thank you again-RFD (talk) 15:42, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I checked the GNIS and the Wisconsin Historical Society. The only mention in GNIS was a historical cemetery that I assumed was the Muskego Settlement. The Wisconsin Historical Society mentions a historical marker for Jefferson Prairie Settlement. Porters Mills just needs coord and info box. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 15:57, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I found and added coordinates for Jefferson Prairie Settlement and Muskego Settlement based on historical markers, but I couldn't find coordinates for Aurora or Nya Upsala. I also added the coordinates and infobox to Porter's Mills. Hope that helps. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:33, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Tram, Kentucky

edit

Most CDPs have two listings at USGS, one for the CDP and one for the unincorporated area. Your edits, based on your misunderstanding, have been reverted. See Auxier, Kentucky U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: TheCatalyst31/Archive 4 populated place and U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: TheCatalyst31/Archive 4 CDP, etc. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:03, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • So, even though we have a reliable source (USGS) saying that they are CDPs, the fact that the Census Bureau provides no population report in its state listing indicates that they aren't CDPs at all? or just not at the time of the 2010 count? I don't understand, but do you have a source for either of those contentions? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:30, 13 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for adding the infoboxes, etc. I never could figure out the infoboxes. I like doing the unincorporated communities especially in Wisconsin. It is a nice break after doing articles about the members of the Wisconsin Legislature. Would you please check the Robbins, Tennessee article-I added a gnis citation and Robbins, Tennessee is a CDP. Hi-I started an article on Martintown, Wisconsin. I just hope I did not goof up the Green County templete. Martintown is near the Illinois stateline. However, what about Big Foot Prairie, Illinois in McHenry County, Illinois? That is right on the Illinois/Wisconsin stateline but it seems to be in Illinois or is it? I also started an article about Bergen, Rock County, Wisconsin it is on the Illinois-Wisconsin stateline. You probably need to do the Big Foot Prairie, Illinois article. Thanks-RFD (talk) 12:14, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
As it turns out, Big Foot Prairie is partially located in both states, though primarily in Illinois. I put both states in the article title, as other communities like this (such as Freedom, Idaho and Wyoming) are named that way. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 18:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi-I started Van Buskirk, Wisconsin which is on the Michigan border. Also I had been working on the East Winona, Wisconsin article-a map is needed. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 19:39, 25 May 2011 (UTC) Many thanks as always for your help. Many of these unincorporated communities in Wisconsin have interesting histories. Voree, Wisconsin in Walworth County is a good example. Some Latter Day Saints founded the community and one of the LDS denominations is still located there. Many thanks again.RFD (talk) 10:34, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Voree does have an interesting history. Unfortunately though, it's not in the GNIS and I can't find its coordinates anywhere, so I can't add an infobox. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 17:15, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
In the Voree, Wisconsin article, there is a photo of a Strangite Church. That has the coordinations of Voree at the caption. Maybe that might help. Hope you are doing well-Thanks again as always-RFD (talk) 18:08, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
The caption has the coordinates of the church, but I'm not convinced that those are the best coordinates to use for Voree, especially since they appear to be in Racine County. Either way, it would be hard to make an infobox having only the coordinates. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 18:36, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks-the coordinations may come about in the future. Voree may also be partially in Racine County. RFD (talk) 19:32, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Arkansas road articles

edit

Hey. Thanks for creating a few Arkansas road articles. If you are interested the AHTD published the 2010 road log, its available for download here. The 2010 edition also includes sections of the form #P, which are projected road lengths, and on-off ramp lengths. Also, per a somewhat ongoing discussion here, Arkansas articles need to include a Arkansas Highway # (AR # and Hwy. #) is a state highway of... in the lead to cover the dual usage of the abbreviations by the AHTD.

Also, is there any pattern to the unincorporated place articles you create? Brandonrush Woo pig sooie 15:11, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bay View, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin

edit

Hi- I started an article on Bay View, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. I was working on an article about the neighborhood of Bayview in Milwaukee when I came across the community in Kewaunee County. Does it need a hatnote? Thank you-RFD (talk) 23:56, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I also started articles about Five Corners, Lafayette County, Wisconsin and Five Corners, Shawano County, Wisconsin and also a disambig page about Five Corners, Wisconsin, Also I came across a Five Corners, Wisconsin in Ozaukee Wisconsin but the gnis listed it as a locale. It is also very close to Cedarburg, Wisconsin so I am wondering if that one is part of Cedarburg. Thank you-RFD (talk) 00:45, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Bay View, Wisconsin is now a disambiguation page, which should solve any issues there. The Five Corners in Ozaukee County seems to be right outside of Cedarburg, but not actually in the city. It still probably isn't notable enough for an article, though, given that most locales aren't. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:55, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Interesting communities

edit

Hi I came across some communities that you may find interesting.

  1. Dukedom, Kentucky and Dukedom, Tennessee. Two unincorporated communities that is on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. Dukedom has a GNIS citation Dukedom, Kentucky does not and the later needs a infobox, etc. Do both communities share the same GNIS?
  2. Is Bay Settlement, Wisconsin in Brown County an unincorporated community? There is a GNIS citation. Recently Bishop Ricken of the Green Bay Diocese approved the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wisconsin and there is the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help to commerate this. Bay Settlement is part of the event because Sr. Adele who witness this was going to mass when this happen. Thank you again-RFD (talk) 11:58, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I wonder if Bay Settlement is the same community as Bay View in Kewaunee County (see the previous section) since both are in the same general area of the Shrine. There's also a Bay View High School in Green Bay metro area which may be worth investigating (or maybe coincidence). Royalbroil 12:24, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I check the Wisconsin Historical Society Dictionary of History; there are separate entities for both communities. Bayview is in Kewaunee County and Bay Settlement is in Brown County and there is a GNIS for Bay Settlement. I would not be surprised about the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help being elevated to a minor basilica. As always thank you-RFD (talk) 12:54, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
About communities that straddle state lines is there a list? I remember seeing one and now I can not find it? Forgot to sign thisRFD (talk) 12:57, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Bay Settlement now has an article; I also found an old book with the early history of the community, so I included that. As for Dukedom, I'm not quite sure what to do about it. The GNIS only mentions the Tennesse community, but based on the Kentucky and Tennessee state highway maps and satellite imagery, the community definitely lies on both sides of the state line. I asked the USGS about it, so I'll wait for their response. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:37, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The GNIS updated its listing for Dukedom, so I merged the two articles on Dukedom to one page, Dukedom, Kentucky and Tennessee. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:26, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The Dictionary of Wisconsin History of the Wisconsin Historical Society listed Bay Settlement as a civil town that was established in 1839 when Wisconsin was a territory. At some point the town was dissolved, merged, or given a different name. Many thanks as always for your help-RFD (talk) 21:23, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey quick question

edit

I noticed you added an infobox and source to the page I created Red Bank, Gloucester County, New Jersey. First off, I'd like to say, thanks very much. Second, I was wondering if you could add this to some similar pages I recently created today (you can check my edit history/contributions). I am not sure how to add that map thing. You can reply here if you want. Tinton5 (talk) 02:32, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sure, no problem. Thanks for writing the articles. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:59, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

edit

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was   Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by   Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by   Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by   Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank   Jarry1250 (submissions) and   Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.

Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here, for those interested, though it appears that neither are completely accurate at this time. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject West Virginia

edit

It was recently suggested that WikiProject West Virginia might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. I have started a discussion on the projects talk page soliciting the opinions of the members of the project if this project would be interested in being supported by WikiProject United States. Please feel free to comment on your opinions about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 19:59, 6 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Unincorporated communities in Wisconsin

edit

Hi-How are you doing? I went on an involuntary wikibreak when a virus/worm got in my computer. It was nice to be without one for 10 days. I started 3 articles: North Red Wing, Wisconsin, Pucketville, Wisconsin, and Rubys Corner, Wisconsin. North Red Wing and Pucketville are interesting in that they are on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border near Red Wing, Wisconsin. Rubys Corner is at the Michigan-Wisconsin border Also Walsh, Wisconsin needs an info box. Many thanks as always for your help-RFD (talk) 00:07, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

The infoboxes are all done. I've been doing well myself. Sorry about the virus, though I hope you enjoyed the time off :) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:18, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for your reply. I was going to add a gnis citation to the Bluff Siding, Wisconsin article and came across 2 citations-one for Bluff Siding as an unincorporated community and a more recent one a Census-Designated Place. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 11:31, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oakridge, Wisconsin, Warrentown, Wisconsin in Pierce County, Wisconsin-many thanks-RFD (talk) 17:40, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
The infoboxes are done. Bluff Siding is only an unincorporated community; for some reason the GNIS has census-designated place listings for several places which the Census Bureau doesn't recognize as CDPs. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:50, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Goerke's Corners, Wisconsin

edit

Many thanks with your help on the infoboxes-it is much appreciated. Orangemike started an article Goerke's Corners, Wisconsin. Orangemike mentioned it is a former unincorporated community which is now a parking lot. But there is a GNIS citation I added. Is Goerke's Corners, Wisconsin an unincorporated community in the town of Brookfield? Thank you again-RFD (talk) 23:03, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for your kind response and again for helping out with the infoboxes of the various Wisconsin communities.RFD (talk) 00:20, 20 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that there is no longer any kind of community at that location; it's just a highway intersection with a park-and-ride lot. I don't want to go undoing your work, but there is no longer a there there. We need to use a template that reflects this better, not one which misleads folks. I invite your response, either here or on the article's talk page. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:11, 20 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
