I have indeed, however, used the preview function liberally to detect errors, however those might instead have resulted in a mass undoing of edits due to seeing those visible errors far too late. I was specifically referring to the series of edits you made to the list of active 4 star officers. You made a change, then saved it. Saw it didn't work. Tried a different change saved it again. And so on and so on. This created a long list of needless edits. The problem with that is that it both adds that long list of changes to the pages history as well as to all the watchlists of every editor watching that page. Always click preview first and check, before saving.

Also, see WP:INDENT for how we reply to comments on talk pages, and the replies in this thread for an example; each beginning with an increasing number of colons.

Lastly, I noted the "ping" you attempted to add to Neovu79's talk page. Just a quick note about that; first, pings on the user's talk page are entirely unnecessary, since we already receive a notification for any changes made to all our of user pages. Even if you add a message, then immediately decide to delete, that will result in two notifications, one for the message, one for the removal. This applies to all user pages; user, user talk, sandbox, etc. You can ping someone else however, ie: ping user x on user y's talk page. You also added the ping incorrectly. You need to use the correct template (at the beginning of your post) and add your signature (at the end) at the same time, or else it won't work. I usually use the template {{Yo|username}}, which produces @username, but you will see a list of templates, along with instructions, on the Template:Reply to page. - wolf 16:52, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Yup, Neovu knows what you mean and any further corrections there are not needed. I had a look at the pages, and it appears you want the 3 star page to mirror the format of the 4 star page, which seems like an obvious and worthwhile improvement, so go for it. I haven't made many changes to the 4 star page since Neovu has been regularly maintaining it for awhile now, and as for the 3 star page, SmartyPants22 would be the guy talk to. (Not that any editor "owns" any page mind you, just that it's good practice to discuss major changes first, especially with any experienced editors who regularly contribute to and/or maintain a page). You can just add your update now, you know. You intend for it to be an improvement. If someone has a problem, it can be undone with one simple click. All the names/ titles/ commands/ etc., are the same, so it's not really a controversial edit, so consensus beforehand is not really required. Besides, if you wait to so see IF some people are going to look at the talk page, and then IF they go to your sandbox, and IF they then go back to the talk page to post 'yea' or 'nay', (how many !votes would you want before you do anything anyway?)... that could take forever. So just go for it. (It's not like you can get in trouble.) If you're at all hesitant, let me know and I'll do it for you. I'll copy it over, give you full credit on the talk page for creating it (plus I'd have to attrib you in the summary anyway), but if there's any hassle from anyone, it's my edit so I'll deal with it. If you can provide a raw list of data; names, service, position... I have no problem doing all the markup to build the table. Yes, it's probably gonna be pretty big, but meh... what milhist editor doesn't love a good list?

I dunno if you're still working on the 3 star table/page, but it needs some tweaks and I had some questions, mainly about numbers. In the lead you state each branch has x number of officers (Army 50, MC 18, USN 38, AF 48, SF 5, CG 4 & PH 0) presumably adding up the numbers from previous table, as they were just listed by branch, with no separate DoD/JCS/UCC/Joint positions. Problem is you state the numbers total 143, but they actually add up to 163.

I think the lead should be changed and expanded, wrt to numbers. If you take a look at General (United States)#Statutory limits, it discusses the numbers of flag/general officers for each branch, the % of 3&4 stars, and actual cap numbers of 4 star. There are also exemptions; JCS & staff, UCC, Dir. of CIA, CO of Forces Korea, etc. (and I think this plays a factor in your current lead numbers) A lot of this info is already included on the list of 4 stars, but after the table. Anyway, on your actual table, you have; Army 37, MC 15, USN 29, AF 30, SF 5, CG 4 & PH 1 but combinded DoD/Joint/UCC 45, for a total of 166. (perhaps postions that are exemptions should be marked with a symbol and/or colored background?) Anyway... some food for thought. - wolf 14:57, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Table markup (U.S. two-star officers)

@Thewolfchild: Sorry to bother you, but that offer you made me to turn raw info into table markup? I'm ready to take you up on it. Right now, I have the table for the most recent pending appointments for two-star officers in the U.S. Armed Forces, and I think it would be helpful to turn the raw info extracted from the Department of Defense releases into the table code, if you're interested. May I request your help in this? P.S. There is hidden text code in the table that should help you organize a bit, plus Service logos (second-last column) should already be present in the test page. I can find citations by myself, but the last column would benefit from finding the Senate nomination url and citing them, with appropriate record and date. Hope you are doing well! List of active duty United States rear admirals

I just wanted to give you a heads up, I had to blank out your list of rear admirals for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, as it was not accurate. Every one of those PHS officers/positions are one-star rear admirals and not two-star. The PHS uses the abbreviation RADM for both their one-star and two-star rear admirals and not RDML for their one-stars. The heads of service corps within the commissioned corps are either captains or one-star rear admirals. The PHS normally appoints officers with two-stars if they are appointed as heads of certain agencies within the HHS, i.e. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, Indian Health Service, National Institutes of Health, etc. Neovu79 (talk) 05:38, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

P.S: I have reverted changes for RADM Yvette Davids and David A. Goggins as a heads-up too. The flag list for officers by the Navy Personnel Command (dated March 2021) lists them both as two-star RADMs. Why their promotions and assignments were not publicized is beyond me, however being the latest possible record of Navy flag officers, I went by that and cited accordingly. Officer vs position

Hey SW, when EPMen asked you about doing one-star lists, I found myself wondering if the number of one-star officers is equal to the number of one-star positions. Iow, must there be a specific billet for an O-6 to be promoted to? Or are there Brigadiers and Rear Admirals (lh) at large? (perhaps Neovu79 knows?) Anyway, keep up the good work. There is a specific cap. of general or flag officers in each service. However, no position below O-9 has a specific rank tied to it. The ranks above O-8 require a specific rank to hold a specific position (that's a lot of specifics). In my opinion, any O-7 or below position has a specific rank tied to it by convention and not by statute. A colonel commanding a brigade or a major general commanding a division is the standard but need not necessarily always be the case. Here's an example: BG Curtis A. Buzzard was a Colonel (O-6) when he first became Commandant of Cadets of the United States Military Academy; he got promoted to Brigadier General (O-7) a while into his tenure. It's pretty common for a Colonel to rank up to BG or a BG to rank up to MG after a few years in the same position, which is what makes the problems for the current O-8 lists worse for possible O-7 lists. There are no set general/flag positions (for the most part) below O-9. You have to scrounge individual biographies and if you get lucky, publicly-released personnel requirements while matching assignments on the USDOD website to the Congress nomination. Specific billets with an assigned rank below O-9 are rare if nonexistent. I could be wrong though. Ask Neovu79 for extra advice. SuperWIKI (talk) 06:24, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Thewolfchild statue does set a total number of active duty general and flag officers (one-star to four-star) within each service (10 U.S.C. § 525). Joint duty one-stars are exempt from that number via 10 U.S.C. § 526. 526 also sets a minimum number of one-stars for joint duty, but no maximum. On a side note, when you're getting into permanent ranks, there are additional statues and regulations are involved. Congress annually sets a total number of officers, active-duty and reserves, that can be promoted to a permanent rank each year. From there each service takes that number and compares it to their needs in certain job-related roles. The military calls them military occupation specialties (MOS) or for the Navy and Coast Guard, they're called designators or designations. The services then come up with a list of how many officers in each job field that they can promote within that total set by Congress. Once an officer is selected for promotion, they have to wait for headroom in order to assume rank. Some can assume rank while still in their current position. Some have to wait for a position to open up to assume rank; this occurs often for staff corps, reserves, and limited duty officers. Just what you're doing. You posted a comment on their talk page to try and engage in discussion (though in the future, comments related to article content should be on the article talk page). If they respond, then try to work out a resolution. If you can't, then dispute resolution would be your next step. If they don't respond and discontinue editing, then you can resume working on the page, and restore any edits you feel are appropriate.

If they don't respond, but continue to edit the page, then you have two options; 1) if the edits clearly do not benefit the article (ie: vandalism), then warn them, using the vandalism or disruptive editing templates found on twinkle. If they continue despite 3 or 4 warnings, report them to AIV. 2) If their edits are basically just in opposition to yours, (making it a content dispute), then file a report at ANI, indicating they refuse to engage despite all your attempts. Lastly, this is just my opinion, others may differ. Since you specifically pinged me, I won't be able to be involved directly, as it would make this a canvassing violation, but feel free to ping again me if you have any more questions. Question: while I agree that my error was not putting the template on both the source and target page, I engage in large sets of copying between list pages, as they share very similar formats. These can take up to 50 sets of edits in a single day. To clarify (if I missed anything on the Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia page), will a single template be enough to cover a single set of edits (i.e. for every set of transfers between two pages) or must every individual copy-edit be attributed? Levine did not have to go through a senatorial confirmation to receive her commission and appointment to four-star rank, because the Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011 (Pub. L. 112-166) eliminated that requirement for all appointments to and promotions for the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the NOAA Corps. So I was also very surprised that Rear Admiral Nancy Hann is currently awaiting Senate approval for her second star. Her last three predecessors did not have to go through that, and there is no law requirement to be appointed for the position of director. One of her predecessors, Vice Admiral Michael Devany, didn't even got through senatorial confirmation when he received his third star. The Act placed all appointments and promotions of offices for these services from the department secretaries to the president. There isn't any information on that because, originally, there was no precedence. Every other four-star admiral were either already an officer when they were nominated for the position of ASH or they were nominated to be appointed a commission ("to be Medical Director in the Regular Corps of the Public Health Service") into the commissioned corps, within the same nomination of for appointment as ASH. Their full nominations read as to be Medical Director in the Regular Corps of the Public Health Service, subject to the qualifications therefor as provided by law and regulations, and to be an Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services. I don't just mean for four-star ranks, but all ranks in the PHSCC in general. The Act says, and I quote: "Eliminates the requirement of Senate approval of all appointments to and promotions for the Commissioned Officer Corps in the Public Health Service and in NOAA." On the topic of Lance K. Landrum, a U.S. Air Force lieutenant general, you reverted my edits after you stated that Wiki policy says that ranks' images shouldn't be included in the infobox. From what I've found, many well-known articles include an image of the rank in the infobox, including George Patton, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Omar Bradley.

You stated that military rank should not be included as an honorific prefix, but I have seen it used in many other articles, such as for Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Chester Nimitz, and Douglas MacArthur. All of the aforementioned articles are widely visited and edited, and many are featured articles, which are meant to be used as an example for how new articles should look.

I've been told that in most cases, adding ranks to the infoboxes, especially en masse is not appropriate (as is adding images to the infobox), as when I attempted adding rank prefixes to members of the German SS. All those examples you have listed are American officers with five-star rank, which in those day were considered permanent personal ranks rather than modern military ranks in modern American which are mere appointments by the Senate. I still often see images of rank used for lower ranking officers and foreign officers. For example, Lieutenant Commander Roger B. Chaffee, who has a featured article, includes both a picture of his rank insignia and an image of the United States Navy flag in his infobox. Colonel Chris Hadfield, a Canadian officer, has an image of his rank in the infobox. Many other officers also have images of rank insignia and their branch of service in their infobox. In my opinion, this is much more indicative of a general style difference among infoboxes. Most contemporary generals of this decade don't use the prefix, hence I follow those. Ordering of "list of pending appointments" on 4 star list

Just noticed that for the 4 star list, designated position is on the left and current position is on the right. For the 3 star and 2 star lists, the current position is on the left and the designated position is on the right, which I find less confusing. Is re-ordering the "list of pending appointments" section on the 4 star list to make it consistent with the others something you'd be willing to do?
