Edelbrock

Thanks for the Barnstar! And thanks for your comments. As you probably noticed, I already had someone give it a once over and I just moved his comments to the Edelbrock talk page. I've been making the obvious changes and line item striking out the text as I do it. I'm at a sort of crossroads now and just began making bold changes, which actually will affect the scope of the article; I placed a large chunk of the Vic Edelbrock material IN the Vic Edelbrock Sr. Article and now I need to decide how to expand each article and how much text to crossover or show in both articles. It truly seems like an art in some ways, especially when the two subjects are intertwined. Any advice or copyediting would be greatly appreciated! MiracleMat (talk) 15:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the help with the SEMA logo. What I would like to do now is get a picture of Vic Edelbrock senior up on the article. My last attempt was deleted because of copyright paranoia blah blah blah, so what I would like to do is get one up on wikimedia commons. I have access to some very old pics and they should now technically be public domain, following the 75 year rule. I looked into created a page for him and it's a little confusing. I may need your help. MiracleMat (talk) 15:22, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Ghost Towns of Wisconsin-William F. Stark (1977)

A list of ghost towns in Ghost Towns of Wisconsin:

  • Sinipee, Wisconsin on Sinipee River, Grant County, near Dubuque, Iowa
  • Ulao, Wisconsin
  • Gratiot's Grove, Lafayette County, part of Black Hawk War of 1832
  • Pleasant Ridge, Grant County near the present day town of Beetown, some free blacks, Afro-Americans settled there. There has been some newspaper coverage, etc. about a memorial to the free blacks who settle here
  • Voree, Wisconsin
  • Belmont, Wisconsin, in Lafayette County, seat of the Wisconsin Territory
  • Rock Island in Door County-there was a community on the island
  • Helena, Wisconsin, Iowa County-Black Hawk War
  • Seeleyburg, Vernon County near La Farge Dempster Seeley founded the town-on the Kickapoo River
  • Newport, Sauk County-the only house still in existence is Dawn Manor which is not too far away from Wisconsin Dells.I am not sure if Dawn Manor is on the National Historic Register
  • Dunnsville, Dunn County on Red Cedar River.Carol Ryrie Brink wrote about her grandmother growing up in Dunnsville. Please see Downsville, Wisconsin for more information.
  • Dover on Dane-Iowa County line-the Wisconsin State Historical Society has a marker about the Village of Dover-3 miles from Mazomanie. There is lots of information about Dover at the Mazomanie Historical Society that was used for this chapter
  • Pokerville, Iowa-Dane Counties 1 mile away from Blue Mounds
  • La Rue, Wisconsin, Sauk County
  • Turtleville, in Rock County on Turtle Creek. The Turtleville Bridge, which at Turtleville, was put on the National Historic Register in 1977
  • Note-the last three ghost towns were put together in the last chapter because there was not much information. Also the author used lots of materials from the Wisconsin Historcal Society.

Okay it was easier to leave this on your talk page instead of the WP Wisconsin page. And Royalbroil there is another book about Wisconsin's vanishing lumber towns at the La Crosse Library.I thought you would be interested in that one. I am planning to check that out. One quick note about the La Crosse Public Library:it is one of the few libraries in Wisconsin that has a public archives-most of the libraries in Wisconsin do not have an archives. I hope this helps-Many thanks-RFD (talk) 15:45, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Heads up

If it's not already on your watchlist .. NASCAR. After a few days of being involved in various policy and guideline talk pages, I finally got back to actual article editing. More to come, I'd really like to see the main NASCAR get up to FA, but I understand that GA comes first - and there's a ton of work that needs to be done to achieve that. Hope life is treating you well ;) — Ched :  ?  00:15, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

I always stick to biographies. Sounds like A LOT of work to get that article up to GA. It's a big topic! It had few inline citations. Royalbroil 03:55, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Scott Gaylord

On April 18, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Scott Gaylord, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Pictures

I came here from RFD's talk, where I saw that you're open to photo requests :-) When you get the chance, could you take pictures for places listed on the National Register of Historic Places? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 11:51, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, I've, ah, taken hundreds already! I've joined the WikiProject for that reason. Look at the page, I took almost all of those pictures. Last night I took pictures of all the historic places in Shawano, Wisconsin... Royalbroil 12:38, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually, looking at that particular article, it looks like I haven't been. That's because I took the pictures that ended up on subarticles of that article. I "trackchase" - travel to racetracks anywhere in the eastern half of WI to watch the races. I went to 30 tracks last year; the only track outside of Wisconsin was Rockford Speedway just south of the border. If I have some time when I travel to a racetrack, I check out that page for the cities on my way to the track and snap the pics. Sometimes I do a day trip where I drive to some area that I haven't been to before (or lately). I have uploaded almost 1400 photos to Commons, mainly Wisconsin cities and historic places. See Commons:Category:Files_by_User:Royalbroil_from_en.wikipedia Royalbroil 12:47, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Ahh, sorry...I've watched lots of NRHP sites for other states, but I've not gotten to Wisconsin yet. Thanks :-) Nyttend (talk) 14:29, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

DYK image

There are a few posts at WP:ERRORS saying people are having trouble seeing the DYK picture that's up now. Do you think you could switch it? Shubinator (talk) 01:00, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

I'll look to see what's going on. Royalbroil 01:04, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Also, in queue 2, second hook, uprising is a disambiguation page. There's no article for a generic uprising, so delink? Or link to wiktionary? Shubinator (talk) 01:15, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Everyone knows what an uprising is, so I removed per WP:OVERLINK. Royalbroil 01:20, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Excellent. By the way, if we've figured out the cascading protection issue, I think I'll prod the devs to consider what they've classified the bug for: cascading protection reaching to Commons. I got a new email address over the weekend, so it would be easy to do. Heh, if they don't change the bug summary, let's get at what the bug's "supposed" to be :P Shubinator (talk) 01:25, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

I can do credits. Shubinator (talk) 02:57, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Done, the queue can be cleared. Shubinator (talk) 03:06, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Just to aid the errors problem. The image that you swapped was protected. I wasnt aware that cascading protection was meant to work so I protected it for 3 days Victuallers (talk) 19:13, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for crediting, Shub. My Wifi internet got killed by rain before I could reply. The cascading protection appears to be working, so you shouldn't have to protect. I'd test each time just to be certain. The time that the image spends waiting in queues 1 to 6 gives it cascading protection before it hits the main page. Royalbroil 02:38, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for the WP Wisconsin Barnstar. Considering my small contribution to this large project, I was pleasantly surprised to see it this morning. Happy editing. Farmercarlos (talk) 13:55, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Roncalli Profile Pic

I removed the picture you added to the Roncalli High School article because the picture is actually of Manitowoc Lutheran High School. I know it was just a mistake but just giving you a heads up on that one. --ChesterMarcol (talk) 21:11, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Ummm, are you sure? I went to Superchick's touring opening concert at the school to take the picture. Their myspace page and this page agree it was held at Roncalli. The school is located on Mirro Dr. Royalbroil 02:18, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I looked up the address for Manitowoc Lutheran High School. I drove by it on the way to the concert not knowing that was Manty Lutheran. Had I known I would have taken a picture. I assumed it was a grade school. Be assured that both pictures on the Roncalli article were the same school. Look at the time stamp on the images, they should be within about 5 minutes which is too fast to drive between the schools. Maybe you're confused about the banner on the school - the concert was sponsored by several different denominations including Lutherans and Catholics. Royalbroil 02:35, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I am 100% sure that is MLHS. I graduated from MLHS. That picture is of the back of the school from Waldo Blvd. The section of the school to the right is an addition to the music dept. that was finished last year which covered up the back of the stage, which you can see rising up from the building, which used to say "Manitowoc Lutheran High School" in big white letters. You can see the edge of the trailer park that is next to the school on the right. I could tell you whose red Honda Civic is parked in the parking lot.--ChesterMarcol (talk) 19:21, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
This picture is Manitowoc Lutheran. Roncalli's exterior is more of a sandstone brick as opposed to the red brick of MLHS. And I graduated from MLHS. And this is MLHS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alorrigan (talkcontribs) 01:17, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I looked at the time stamp, 12 minutes apart. You're right, it does look like a different school. Looking at the original uncropped image, it has a divided highway in the foreground with grass on the median. There's no divided highway on Mirro Drive, right? So it looks like you both are right! Thanks for correcting me and sticking to your guns. I'll add it to the MLHS article. This is even better - pictures for 2 articles! I'll get the image renamed on Commons - I'm an admin there now. Royalbroil 01:37, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
You had me thinking I was going crazy for a minute, and Mirro Drive isn't divided. I have noticed alot of your pictures on articles for locations in this area it really adds alot to the articles to have pictures, keep up the good work.--ChesterMarcol (talk) 02:02, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad we got it solved. I haven't concentrated on your area, I've taken pictures all over the eastern half of Wisconsin. I;m approaching 1500 pictures on Commons. I'm glad to hear they're appreciated! Royalbroil 03:05, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

JamieS93

Just wondering if you have anything to add on for the coaching so far.

In my eyes, Jamie is already an admin and the formalities can begin probably in a week or two. I'll let you know when to start drafting your co-nom. :) - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 17:37, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey Buddy

Hey Royal, how you doin these days? Sorry I haven't been as active on the NASCAR stuff as I should be, but I've been kind of poking around at some other things. I'll be getting back to it very soon though. I did get a lot of work done on the main NASCAR page, and have some definite plans to continue (although I'll want some input before I do some of the things).

Had kind of a personal favor to ask you, and I've already got one friend User:Huntster to accept some responsibility on this too. Would it be ok if I sent you some of my personal information, like phone numbers, and such via email - and establishing that you're also one of my trusted contacts in the event something would happen down the road - (hopefully long long down the road)? Not anything to dwell on or anything, but I did notice you were willing to weigh in on the whole WP:RIP guideline, so I'm guessing it's not an issue you're afraid to tackle when need be either.

Also - and this has nothing to do with the above request, I will be somewhat out of touch for the next month or so at times. I have the weekend jaunt to Toledo Speedway coming up this weekend, and then a week and a half in early May to run down to Birmingham AL. for my niece's college graduation. I should be back to regular by late May though. Also, DYK that that Boyle hook was really lame? ... LOL .. sorry, I couldn't resist that one. Take care buddy, Ched

Ched :  ?  20:13, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

just reading the thread above, you do RfA co-noms eh? ... I'll have to keep that in mind. ;) — Ched :  ?  20:18, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I give co-noms when I feel real inspired by someone, like I am with Jamie. It's quite rare that I approach someone, like I did with her. It was so wrong to see her first RFA go up in smoke. I have a lot of firsthand experience with her that I wish could have been brought out in her first RFA.
You can send me your personal information if you like. I've give out my information and real background to a few Wikipedians. If I should die, two of my cousins had done a bit of editing a while back and have some respect here, so I'm planning to ask them to post information on me if I died. They are the only Wikipedians that I've met in real life, although there's a chance that I may meet up with one of those informed Wikipedians in October.
Enjoy your time away. Wikipedia will still be here. There's no deadline on getting any articles done, so don't worry about the NASCAR article. Enjoy your time at Toledo Speedway. A panorama would be nice, I have a friend who has software to make one. I would love to see pictures of sign, too. Ideally, pictures of flagstand, ticket boot and a corner would be the best just like I did at Lake Geneva Raceway. I'm glad I took them since that track is now demolished. Royalbroil 23:48, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm sure I'll have a great time. Great ideas too, I have some stitching software that I can use to do a panaroma - and I'd have never thought of the ticket booth or flag stand. Most tracks I visit I get a pic of the sign right off the bat, that way I can sort my pics into folders. Also, I sent you my personal info via the Wikipedia email link, rather than just out of my address book - that way OTRS can always verify. Also sent to User:Huntster. Hopefully you guys won't need that until you're both old and gray :). Once I get back to the image upload thing, I'll dig out the exact pic I need you to move - arca-jennerstown something should be arca-salem ... or something along those lines. If you want to watchlist my commons uploads, that'd be cool, although I only have 3 there now - hopefully I'll be adding more soon. I have some decent ASA Bristol shots from 2007, do we need anything in that line? Also, I'll take the list of name you gave me too - and if they have a meet-n-greet session on the track, I'll do my best. Cheers. — Ched :  ?  05:31, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
sigh - mom wasn't feeling up to the trip. Hopefully another track, another time. The day certainly isn't starting out well. ;( — Ched :  ?  15:20, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Re:

Gosh, I think I remember you from ages back, puttering around on The Gufs, maybe? Well, it's nice to get a message on my talk page that's not a deletion notice. 2009 Dove Awards

In case you didn't know, the 2009 Dove Awards were last night, and so there's a lot of potential work to be done. I've begun the crazy project of updating every artist/album/song page. This is a good resource from About.com which lists nominees and winners, if you wish to pitch in on the work. By the way, another Christian music GA just passed. :) JamieS93 23:30, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Otto Frederick Hunziker et al.

I understand the debate and ultimate consensus about the distinction between "University of Wisconsin" and "University of Wisconsin-Madison", but that refers to contemporary usage. To say that someone attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1909 is an anachronism, as the term UW-Madison didn't even exist then. Perhaps the most precise wording would be "attended the University of Wisconsin (now University of Wisconsin-Madison)" but that seems a bit wordy. So the historically more accurate term seems better to me. --Sift&Winnow 14:00, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Talk Page Stalker!

I checked your talk page and nobody has accused you of this yet, so I just thought I'd do the honors since you were so helpful with my request on JamieS93's talk page. If I knew anything about giving barnstars I might give you a little more prestigous award than this, but since I'm a WikiNoob this'll have to do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Neil Clancy (talkcontribs)

Collins, Wisconsin

I look at the Collins, Wisconsin article. The article/photos are excellent. The only change I made was that I added Collins to the Manitowoc County article. One thing I want to alert you-an editor wants to merge the Prairie du Chien school district article with that of the city. The same editor wants to do the same thing with the Decorah, Iowa school district article. I thought school districts in this country are seperate government entities. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 12:07, 1 May 2009 (UTC) PS-See my talk page-response there-RFD (talk) 12:22, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Shags

Hey there Royalbroil, I thought your idea on the Shags page was the best all around solution. I went ahead and took a shot, if you want to check me, and make sure I got things right. Appreciate your help on this, thanks ;) — Ched :  ?  01:52, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

I did some minor changes. Overall, I like how you put the page together! Royalbroil 03:58, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

NASCAR

I noticed we have a lot of red links for individual NASCAR seasons like (1955 - 1981 maybe). I might be able to get a few of those started here this summer. Do we want each race with top 10 finishes listed? Also, that little career stat table I did for Richmond, Rex White, and AK - should I be looking to get that into all the other BIO and BLP articles over time? Hmmm... probably should have numbered these ... lol. The one book I have the 2004 Fan Guide one (which will be a great help in refing the seasons) has money totals different than nascar.com. I'm guessing it includes like memorabilia sales and such maybe. I'd be inclined to just leave those numbers out of anything, but what do you think? — Ched :  ?  02:21, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

For the NASCAR seasons, we have added the Top 10 finishers from each race, so your idea sounds good! That little career stat table looks good for any driver - add at will. I'd skip mentioning money since there is a dispute. The official NASCAR.com source would take precedent, but I see no reason to go there. We are concerned about the results, not money matters. Royalbroil 04:02, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

DYK stuff

Could you clear queue 3 and take a look at next and next next? Also, do we have a holding area for next years' April Fools' hooks? There are a few promising ones now on the noms page (here and here). Shubinator (talk) 21:15, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Too late for most of your comments. 2010 April Fool's suggestions can be placed any time at Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know. Royalbroil 13:15, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

new article

I'm going to nom it for a DYK, if you want to contrib. to the article. Still needs some work, but I thought It might be good enough to roll out to mainspace. If you have a second, would you at least look it over. ;) thx. — Ched :  ?  00:54, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

You know it needs 1500 characters of main body text - that'll be hard to accomplish. You might be able to make a case for a sentence summary for each race. There needs to be wikilinks to each track on the schedule. I won't have time until at the earliest Sunday night U.S. Royalbroil 13:17, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Looks like I might not have time to follow through on this one in time to get a DYK out of it. Too bad, I thought that the "first year that sponsors paid money" would be a great hook too ... lol. Anyway, having been accused of having caused a "hell of a lot of damage" to an article, I feel it's probably in my best interests to address that issue first. If I do scrounge up enough time to get the text up to required standards, I'll let you know when I put it up for DYK. Probably should have just left it in a text file til I had more time ... lol. I'll get the individual top 10 for each race added as well, when time permits. The good news is that there is a whole section in this one book which is literally titled "Did You Know". Some good stuff in there too. Cheers buddy. ;) — Ched :  ?  02:14, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh

This is what I see:

  • Rewording to more commonly accepted terms (e.g., headcount > enrollment, sans > except)
  • Toning down some peacock wording (e.g., widely known > reputed, esteemed, known across the country)
  • Changing some terms (appropriately) to lowercase
  • Wikifying some terms (Even though many are redlinked, such as some of the awards, doesn't that show the status of the awards?)
  • Removal of generalizations (e.g., have been quite successful, teams are quite successful, etc.), leaving specifics behind
  • Request for specific dates for statements employing terms such as "recently" and "consistently place"
  • Spelling corrections (e.g., dormatory > dormitory, produceder > producer)
  • Improving word choice (e.g., talking about > considering)
  • Removal of trivial or irrelevant information (e.g., who submitted the application for the National Register, long bio of Steve Boettcher)

What do you see that's unproductive? --Sift&Winnow 17:41, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

image deletion

I've seen a couple of images by user:Sulfur, and I'm a little concerned about the propriety of said deletions. You seem to have nominated one of them for deletion, but I can't find the image in the link you supplied. Could you tell me where you saw it? I don't believe that it should have been deleted, but I'd like to see the evidence for myself. -Freekee (talk) 20:23, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm looking at the deletion record of the image when it was moved to Commons. You'd have to be an administrator to view it, like I said in the Commons discussion. I've paste in the text below, and used the word "*redacted*" to replace the name for the photo credit:

== Summary == A Greendale Original home. Image used by http://www.greendalelife.com and http://www.greendaleoriginals.com. Photo credit: *redacted* == Licensing == {{GFDL-self}} [[Category:Images of Greendale, Wisconsin]]

It was deleted off the English Wikipedia because it was moved to Commons. You can find the undeletion requests for Commons here. You're right, things do look fishy. I'll think about it. Royalbroil 01:52, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I have an issue with this whole situation. The uploader uploaded quite a few images, and it is quite obvious to me that he took them himself, since he also has them on his Flickr. Unfortunately, he has a copyright notice on them there, and won't provide User:GRuban official proof that they're his. GRuban has gotten at least two of them deleted, purely on procedural grounds (the copyright issue). Are we obligated to delete all of his images because of the copyright/proof issue? Or since we "know" they're legit, can we leave them alone? -Freekee (talk) 17:24, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

FSBO Madison

You tagged the artcile for 'Notability' concerns. Could you help me understand what you suggest needs to be improved? Best regards Fullrabb 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I can't put my finger on anything specific, just generalities. I know that's not helpful to you. When I read the article, I wonder what makes this place a notable real estate agency. Should there be an article on every real estate agency in Madison? NO. So why is this one agency notable? What makes them special enough to warrant an article? Right now, it looks like an advertisement for the agency. Royalbroil 05:16, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I understand your arguement. Wikipedia isn't a business directory, but why am I interested in FSBO Madison when I've never been to Madison or met any of the owners? Two reasons: First, the company is the first (and as far as we know the largest) internet response to the traditional realtor cartel that has dominated residential real estate sales for decades. They are fundamentally challenging the traditional model much as eBay, craigslist, and Wikipedia have each challenged an existing business structure. Second, how many Madison real estate companies have been the subject of two New York Times articles, much less a major economics research paper that was analyzed on numerous reports and blogs like Freakonomics. I would be happy to rewrite the intro to the article to emphasize more of this significance, but I want to be sure that will suffice, because of your comment, "I can't put my finger on anything specific." Your thoughts? Fullrabb 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I am definitely not accusing you of doing promotional work. I've run across that situation myself where I others thought I was promoting something. You are understanding my concern: why does some random realtor in Madison deserve an article? Your suggestion to improve the article's intro to include this information is a step in the right direction to address my concerns, especially if you can source this content to the New York Times (a reliable source). Please edit the intro and leave me a message. I'll try to help edit the article if I feel I can improve it. Cheers! Royalbroil 02:45, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your input. I think the article is strong now. Four references, more focus on the intro, etc. Take a look and if you agree let's remove the 'notability'. Your contribution to the article would be great, too. Regards. Fullrabb 7 May 2009 (UTC)

added DYK

I added 1952 in NASCAR to DYK - May 2. If you want to check to see if I did it right, or if there's anything I can do to help the article along, let me know. I still have a lot of individual races to add - but I doubt I can get much further before I leave. Have a good one. ;) — Ched :  ?  09:18, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

note: If I can get to the Internet in any way while Jamie's RfA is open, I will gladly add my support. — Ched :  ?  09:19, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

DYK -- are you sure?

Hi RoyalBroil

Thanks for your msg on my talk about Percy Hurd appearing on the main page through WP:DYK. Now I'm probably missing something, but the http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere&target=Percy_Hurd whatlinkshere] doesn't show it, and I can't find any trace of him on the DYK pages. I know that I nominated the article, but did it actually make it to DYK? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:17, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

It's already off the main page and removed from the queues, here is where it was added by BQ. I just did the crediting because BQ was busy. You can find a record in the archives. Royalbroil 11:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for explaining that, and sorry for being a nuisance. I just expected the archive to show up in what-links-here, which seems to have been a mistaken expectation.
Anyway, congrats on all your good work with DYK. :) --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:46, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
No problems about your questions - they were quite reasonable! I didn't consider them to be a nuisance at all. Thank you for all that you do too! Like I saw on someone's userpage - "you give a damn". We all do or we'd be doing something else. Royalbroil 23:54, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

12 DYKs

Thanks for all those. :) --candlewicke 14:57, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

(blushes) Thanks. I did 25 actually but consensus was that it was much too much. Thanks for your positive comment. :) --candlewicke 22:59, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I don't remember that situation, but I agree that 25 is too many. The hook was too long and too hard to follow. Royalbroil 04:14, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Mark Martin

Hello,

Thanks for updating Mark Martin's article. Just a question. Do you watch the race with Wikipedia on? You updated his tally before nascar.com could even update their website! Great work!--gordonrox24 (talk) 15:00, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

I only watch some NASCAR races. I happened to be sitting at my computer watching the race. If I don't have plans, I usually go to a local racetrack on Saturday nights, but they rained out. Royalbroil 01:05, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

DYK bot

It has been many months of manually updating the DYK template for the main page (since mid February). We really do need this bot. I'm sure your busy. After all, we are all volunteers and this is a hobby. I want to start a thread on the DYK talk page asking if someone else will do the programming and bug repairing for the bot; Shubinator will probably be willing to do it. I'm being polite and telling you about it so you have time to respond before I start a thread. Royalbroil 12:36, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

If someone else wishes to do so, they may. I've attempted several times to test out the problem only to have the main page manually updated while I was testing. I've just assumed that you guys would rather manually update :P. I can make an attempt after Friday this week (finals) if you would like or we can let someone else try. The main issue as far as me is getting everyone at DYK to not update the main page, which they invariably do anyway because every time one person misses the message. >.> If you guys don't mind waiting to friday I can probably do a better job of testing by creating a bunch of test pages and fix the thing off the main page, as getting people to wait is just impossible. —— nixeagleemail me 00:51, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
I've went ahead and made a post to WT:DYK. I can enabletest it tonight pending all the bot variables being up to date as I remember resolving the main issue (logging out randomly). —— nixeagleemail me 01:07, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

I just noticed the archived deletion request you made for this image on Wikipedia Commons. Oh well.. now that you are an almighty administrator bully here, I encourage you to remove all of my major contributions (images and their accompanying articles) as they should all be considered suspect. Appreciation for your taking the time to protect DYK images at Commons

I want to let you know that your actions to protect upcoming DYK images at Commons are appreciated, at least by me. It saves the trouble of downloading images, uploading them to EN, and protecting them here. --Orlady (talk) 04:51, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. It's fairly easy, especially compared to the whole download cycle. I know how difficult that is, for had to do it the manual way until I got the tools at Commons a month ago. By the way, I set up cascading protection for local DYK images. It takes several hours for a cascading protection to reach an image on the main page. So I set it up that any local image sitting in queues 1 to 6 gets protected by cascading protection from the page User:Ameliorate!/DYKlock. While it takes several hours for the protection to be applied, hooks normally sit in queues 1 to 6 for around a day. By the time they hit the main page, they'll be protected. They'll remain protected because the main page template is also transcluded to DYKlock. The moral of the story is that a local image doesn't need to be protected anymore. You just need to add {{m-protected}} or {{C-uploaded}}. Royalbroil 05:03, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

1952

Hey there Royalbroil, how's WP doing these days? I noticed that you cleaned up and improved the 1952 article while I was gone, thank you. Sorry I ran out of time on ya. ;). I have an idea I want to run past you in the next day or two on format too. Anyway, I'm a little backed up as far as my clients go - so I'll need to be catching up there, but for the most part - I'm back. Did you get all the races in?, or do I need to follow up on that and get the last couple added yet? Hope you've been catching some good action now that the season has started. (races). Cheers, and talk to you soon. — Ched :  ?  20:18, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Yea, the article is done - all of the races are added. I've been to lots of local tracks already - 11 so far (5 were ice races). Definitely catch up on your clients - that's a much bigger priority than the 'pedia. Talk to ya later! Royalbroil 01:06, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

1952

hey there RB, how you doin? Quick question or two for you. is that 1952 in NASCAR something that could ever be taken to GA status? or is there just too much "list" stuff there for that? If it could, what would we (or I), need to do to get it there? — Ched :  ?  18:41, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

I wonder if would be a better candidate for featured list? Good question. I don't see any GA or FA on a topic like this. There's a lot of list-type items in the article. I doubt we could find enough information to write a thorough article fully describing the season. I was thinking a little about trying to do a featured list, and the Daytona 500 pole position winners article was at the front of my mind. What do you think about that instead? Royalbroil 02:31, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
You betcha! I had never seen the 500 pole list before ... what can I do to help? And I do agree that while we could add some prose to the season recap, it would be tough to find sources to fill in sections like: Media coverage, Safety in 1952, ummm ... Injuries, Controversies... etc. The kind of stuff that would round out the article. So count me in on the 500 list. What do we need to do? — Ched :  ?  03:28, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
WOW ... "SOURCES"! .. ok, I'll start digging up sources, and we'll get it up to FA. I hadn't realized that there were actually "0" references on that page ... lol. — Ched :  ?  03:32, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
(ec)Lots of citations. First of all - the results should be easy. The hard part will be trying to find references for the different ways that the pole position was determined. The second round of qualifying information sounds right to my memory, but we need to cite it. I won't be around much at all until late Monday - races at Madison International Speedway on Friday, then camping for the holiday weekend at my sister's place. Royalbroil 03:33, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh, the best reference would be NASCAR's website or books. Racing-reference is NOT preferable to a solid, reliable source like the official website. Might as well do it right in the first place instead of doing it over a second time. Royalbroil 03:35, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
OK, I just looked through my books (except for the 1 that I haven't found yet), but mostly driver info, and race results. I'll be at a used book store soon, and am currently building a reference library for WP purposes - so I'll keep an eye open for NASCAR stuff most definitely. I knew nascar.com was a preferred site; but, didn't know that racing-reference was marginal - glad you clued me in to that little tid bit. Now to the personal stuff - HEY - HAVE A GREAT TIME! ... LOL. Sounds like a great weekend. I'm in and out still, but should have some time Sat. night, and while I'm watching races on Sun. Sounds to me like we have a plan buddy - ;). Have fun, be safe. — Ched :  ?  04:34, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Update. Trying to work out Sat. night as an evening at Pittsburgh Motor Speedway - Big Block Mods coming in for the first time in almost 20 years. Will still work on refs as I can, but might not be as quick as I hoped. CYA at the races ;) — Ched :  ?  05:51, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Weather was rainy by Madison. So instead of driving 2 hours south, I drove 1.5 hours north to a karting track in northern Wisconsin. I'll catch Madison later. I'm leaving for camping in my sister's back yard within a few hours for some urban camping. I might take a break from camping to go to Sunday night races at a nearby track, but not if there's a bunch of family around the campfire. Have a great time watching the big blocks! There aren't any big block modifieds racing around Wisconsin. Have a nice weekend! Royalbroil 11:44, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

  • Any chance you might be willing to write a modest article for The Full Armor of God Broadcast? I think they went over board on their last page and that is why it ended up getting deleted. They posted their old Wiki page on their website and titled it KUBA-pedia page, perhaps out of spite. Probably not a greatest idea, but I am sure that they would take it down if they got some support from the Wiki Radio Project. Please check it out and email The Full Armor of God Broadcast if you think you can help. I am sure that they would agree not to interfere on the page this time around. TY (http://www.FullArmorRadio.com) A concerned listener - 173.88.38.41 (talk) 17:28, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
The article is lacking reliable sources. In my opinion the ones used were sufficient, but I don't always win. I'm not a fan of the show having never heard of it, but I am interested in seeing notable subjects get articles. I think the topic is notable, but other's don't. It's a lot harder to write an article after it has been deleted with a deletion discussion because then you need to prove notability much more thoroughly. I'd need to see some really solid sources with the caliber of NY Times, People magazine, etc because I won't spend time on an article just to see it get deleted with minimal discussion (if any). I need a smoking gun. Smoking guns are VERY HARD to find for Christian topics because the secular media almost always avoids Christian topics. What solid reliable sources do you have that are independent of the subject? Royalbroil 01:30, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar

  The Dual-Boot Barnstar
In recognition of the fact that you actually deserve more than one Barnstar for your recent work, Ched in his typically lazy manner drops off your "Dual-Boot" Barnstar for:
  1. Your efforts to welcome and encourage new users into the NASCAR project.
  2. Your efforts to help people achieve success, and your tireless work in the WP:DYK project.

Just in case I never said it out loud - I greatly appreciate all you've done to help me along the way RB. I know I haven't gotten to the list yet, I got involved in the BLP project, and there just never seems to be enough time. I will work on it ASAP. Islip

Thanks for calling Islip Speedway a great article! It's my first DYK :) By the way I replied here. ~EdGl 09:15, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I noticed you removed WikiProject Motorsport from the article's talk page. You're more knowledgeable than I in this subject, so I trust your judgment; just wondering why. Should I do the same with Riverhead Raceway, my other creation? It doesn't hold any Cup races but it does have NASCAR's Whelen Modified Tour, if that matters in this case. (P.S. I responded to your post on the DYK page, see link above. I really have no strong opinion either way.) ~EdGl 20:55, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, here's why. WikiProject NASCAR is the primary notability for both tracks. Whelen Modifieds are part of WP:NASCAR. We normally add WikiProject Motorsport if an article belongs to numerous Motorsport genres or if it falls outside all of the children WikiProjects. So Juan Pablo Montoya can get the WP:MOTOR tag on the talk page because he's part of WikiProjects NASCAR, American Open Wheel Racing, and F1. Jeff Gordon wouldn't get it because he's just NASCAR, even though he did do some open wheel racing. I could see Tony Stewart going either way because he was famous for his open wheel before NASCAR, but NASCAR dominates his career now. Royalbroil 06:15, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey RB

Hey buddy, I was going through some BLP uncat stuff, and ran across the Kevin Grubb article. Wow, bummer. I hadn't heard. I see you were right on top of it by looking at the article history though. Hate to hear about those kinds of things. Although I never met him, being a race fan - it always is a bit of a downer when I hear about these things. I remember meeting Adam Petty at an ASA event, and it wasn't all that awful long after that that he suffered his sad fate. Somehow when it comes to drivers and race fans, it's almost like losing one of the family huh?

Oh, and I did drop a line at Fir0002 talk, he may get back to you toward the end of the month - he's taking exams and all right now. Anyway, not really a wiki-productive post, but just noticed the article and all. Cheers. — Ched :  ?  22:58, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Yea, Grubb rose pretty high thanks to his father. I remember when they Kevin & Wayne started in their races in the Busch Series. Too bad things turned out the way they did.
Thanks for bringing up my situation to Fir0002. I've been reading the manual and learning the knobs on the camera. That plus putting in a HUGE garden has kept me offline. I was even thinking of maybe putting the Rex White and/or 1952 article up for peer review - what do you think? Waste of time or not? — Ched :  ?  04:57, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
I found the stats from that article views counter that you mentioned at WP:NASCAR. Speaking of WP:NASCAR, have you officially joined as a member? Members usually add the WikiProject boxes to their userpage to help promote the group. About the peer reviews - I definitely wouldn't for the 1952 in NASCAR, it's not near WP:GA. It might be worth it for Rex White. If you think it's close, I'll do the first peer review before you list it so that I give my opinion if it's close to GA. I would expect an article for a NASCAR champion to be pretty lengthy and cover their career in depth, including time spent racing on other circuits. With a quick 1 minute glance, I see plenty of unsourced statements that definitely need sourcing. Royalbroil 05:08, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Yea, I saw that Mr Z-man could do that, and I thought it would be great for our NASCAR project, so I just wp:boldly asked him .. lol. I think I have that little userbox on my To Do page. Not sure if I actually added my sig. anywhere - but I'll check. Think I'll hold off on the peer review a bit, but I will look back over the Rex White thing. I'm pretty sure everything that I added had a source, so it may just be a matter of putting the ref name in places it belongs. Been a while since I looked at it. I know I have some more stuff to add too since I got those books and all as well. I'd like to find some more info on his personal life - wife, kids, etc. That's not as easy to come by - even in his autobiography (which basically covers his career). He's supposed to be working on a second book, not sure what the status is on that. Getting back to the Dale Earnhardt thing too - I did notice it was a high priority on the project page, so I will start working on that. Still stuff in the Pole article as well. I don't think we'll run out of things to do any time soon ... LOL!!! — Ched :  ?  05:35, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK feedback

Hi there. I've been an occasional contributor and reviewer at DYK. Today I made my first attempt to follow the procedures for moving material to Prep area 1, including generating credits, and removing the items from the discussion page. I would appreciate feedback from yourself or another regular as to whether my actions were correct. Can I also anticipate three things: there's only one US item out of seven, because most of the older noms that had been reviewed were non-US; I went up to seven hooks rather than six to get the box looking 'full' on the main page; and I know something is supposed to be done for the image, but I wasn't confident of what, so I haven't done anything. I'd really appreciate an explanation of that bit of the process. I'm posting this message to Dravecky, Casliber and Royalbroil, so whoever's around can ping me at my talkpage. Thank you! hamiltonstone (talk) 00:51, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Well, long week, but it's finally over. I wanted to drop by and say Thank you RB. Your support and encouragement has meant a lot to me. It's a good thing to have friends I think, and I consider you one of the best buddy! Might take me a couple days to get back up to speed on the regular editing; as I have some R/L stuff to get caught up on, and I want to see what these new buttons do and all. But .. I pulled some info from the Jayski site with bulleted points on the Pole article. I have it in one of my sandboxes right now, and want to tweak and reword a bit for the lead of that article. Once I get the rough draft smoothed out a bit, I'd like you to take a look and tweak it some for me. (if you don't mind). Still a lot of stuff you need to teach me on the editing side of things, but I know you're a busy man, so I'll try to keep it concise, and concentrated so I'm not pestering you every other edit. Thank you again for your faith and trust in me, I'll do my very best to make you proud. (as both an editor and an admin). Cheers buddy! — Ched :  ?  03:06, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Kindred spirit

Hi! So as I was planning the route back home on a road trip (which I'm on right now), I was taking into account where I could take Wikipedia photos along the way. I then noticed you covered a huge chunk of the places I would visit (towns and universities) and took the photos I would take (key buildings, town halls, etc) --very impressive. Its nice to see another who's into these sorts of dorky "scavenger hunts" that some of us play. There are a few of us in Minnesota, and I try to hit towns on my own road trips (but sometimes, depending on my company, they're not as patient to stop in every little town to take a photo of a town hall). I guess its just in the blood of some of us :-) All the best. --Bobak (talk) 05:31, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

I love going to car races all around the eastern half of Wisconsin and I take some day trips. The races used to often be solo trips, so that's where I got my best opportunity for photos. If it's easy and I have a little time, I'll take photos of things along the way. Please take photos when you're driving because I'm sure there's a lot that I have missed and plenty of places that I didn't happen to drive by. I've apparently gotten good with sheer repetition and repeating what situations worked, because my pictures usually score well on google and yahoo images. I don't know anyone else who's doing these "scavenger hunts" in Wisconsin, although there are some who took the photos of communities around their locale. I've taken few photographs in the western half of the state (west of Interstate 39) except in the eastern part of the BEAUTIFUL Driftless Area. Thank you for your awesome comments and I'm glad you feel like a kindred spirit! Royalbroil 11:41, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
You're definitely right about most people taking photos in their own locale. Heh, actually I did a run through NW Wisconsin a few years ago, which is coincidentally where the image used in the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame came from. I didn't initially put two and two together (that you had recently asked me about the photo) when I posted the above comment --I was just planning my route from a hotel in Michigan when I noticed all the towns you'd covered. --Bobak (talk) 18:34, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
You have an interesting route between Michigan & Minnesota if you're traveling through areas that I photographed! I'm sure there's some that I hit, but I missed most of it! Yes, I did know that you took the picture for the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame. I drove past it about 10 years ago and wasn't impressed at that time, but I've love to see it now! Royalbroil 03:20, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Pilsen, Lark, and Shirley

With the help of my Wisconsin DeLorme Atlas&Gazeteer I put the towns together with the unincorporated communities. There was a little confusion with the Pilsen (community), Wisconsin article in that it is in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin and there is the town of Pilsen in Bayfield County, Wisconsin- you had the unincorporated community of Pilsen being in the town of Pilsen being in Bayfield County. It is in the town of Montpelier in Kewaunee County. I corrected it. A recommendation a disamb page should be created for Pilsen- there is the city in Germany, a neighborhood in Germany, a region in Peru (?) and of course the town and unincorporated community in Wisconsin The index on Wikipedia would give the Pilsen listings. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 16:33, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Yikes why do I keep think Pilsen in Europe is in Germany? Pilsen is in the Czech Republic in Bohemia! My mistake-a disamb page is needed-Thanks-RFD (talk) 16:43, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Many thanks for taking care of the Pilsen disamb page-RFD (talk) 10:49, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey RB. When you get a chance, would you look at this thread. I deleted the WP side, but it appears that there are also issues with the pictures on the Commons side as well. I don't do enough (uploaded maybe a half dozen pics so far), to be able to speak to the questions the user may have, and possible copyvio issues of pics. Spelling corrections

Be careful where you run your bot AWB; here you corrected a user's subpage that was intended to be a CSD survey example and thus was quoted verbatim, spelling errors and all. Sticking to the mainspace would be your best bet. –xenotalk 00:47, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I was checking and trying to stick to mainspace. After making that edit, I made the same conclusion that you did. Thanks for watching out for me and for undoing it! Royalbroil 00:50, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
No problem =) Let me know if you have any questions about AWB, I've used it a lot. –xenotalk 00:52, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I've used it quite a bit too, but it has been a few months. Probably over 1000 edits. It was human error, not bot or programming on my part. I should have looked closer at what I was editing. Royalbroil 00:56, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Pics

WOW .. you got some GREAT shots there RB. Are all the ones you put up to flickr free? ... How do I see your gallery at commons? ... I got a link for my own gallery .. but there isn't much there yet. Can I just transfer pics from my Google account (Picasa) to commons? or do I have to do each individually? ... I know .. too many questions all at once. Sorry ... OK... one big question, can you introduce me to Shannon Spade? ... LOL. Sigh .. she's prolly younger than my daughter - but you can't blame a guy for thinking! You did great buddy, and I'll try to match up some of those faces to the right drivers over the next couple days. I love the pics .. great job! — Ched :  ?  04:08, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I set all of my flickr images as a Creative Commons license, except a few personal shots that I only let friends access. I do have a Commons gallery: Commons:Category:Files by User:Royalbroil from en.wikipedia; it's a gallery that I manually created one by one. I don't know how to transfer from Picassa to Commons. I bet you'd have to do each one manually. FYI, If you took the picture, you can license a Wikipedia/Commons image differently than other places on the web.
Shannon Spade was a real doll - I'd like to marry her. Okay, court her first. I have a picture of a woman who asked Shannon to be on a picture with her boyfriend/man. Jamie Little would do too! They're both beautiful. They both were giggling a lot. Royalbroil 04:20, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

The only one of those that I know about it glorified rice, and that's because my aunt married a Yooper. Royalbroil 02:57, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

How do I add you guys as friends on Flickr? Is it okay to ask for an invitation, or is it like adminship where I should wait to be asked? :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:16, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

You can add someone as a friend on flickr by looking at their photostream and clicking on "add .... as a contact". That puts them in your list of friends. Any picture that they post comes up on your list of photos by your friends. Anyone is able to post pictures that can only be seen by their friends and/or family. For those pictures, they have to add you as a friend. You can add me as a friend here. Royalbroil 03:25, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Necedah Shrine

Sometimes you just have to wait a while until a particular editor has lost interest in an article before you can make needed changes. I hadn't read the Talk page until after I made the edits. Does it look balanced to you now? There may have been shenanigans among unsavory characters associated with the shrine, but I could not readily find reliable sources to that effect. As I mentioned to RFD, next week I'm going to try to find some more reliable sources from contemporaneous newspapers about the entire set of events. Do you ever use NewspaperArchive.com for sources? It's great! --Sift&Winnow 01:23, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

NewspaperArchive.com has digitized over 900 historical Wisconsin newspapers, so it's good for local history. I did a quick search of it for some of the alleged crimes associated with Necedah, and found nothing. They should have appeared in newspapers, if they really happened. Although pedophilia, or any other crime, committed by an affiliate of an organization may not be fair game for an article on the organization, one of the claims was that the shrine participated in a cover-up of the incident, and that does seem like fair game, if factual. Thanks for your comments. --Sift&Winnow 02:27, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

The Guadalupe Shrine

Hi! The photo of the small chapel is the Votive Chapel. You can see that on the hillside as you are coming in to La Crosse on Highway 14/61. That would be #7 in the set. The photo of the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe #4 can be used. Any of the photos #18-21 that shows the main shrine church with the dome can used. The photo of the main altar to the left of set of photos can be used.

Okay the various photos that show the various art work, the organ, etc. should not be used. This would detract from the article for people would understand the various art work, etc. Okay I numbered the photos from left to right 1.,2.,3.,4. etc.

For the time being used the photos about the votive chapel, the main shrine church, the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, & the main altar. I have not been to the Shrine in over one year. This would give me an excuse to go back. At the time I went to the Shrine they were building the main shrine church in the summer of 2008. Thanks-RFD (talk) 01:29, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Art work shouldn't be used anyhow - it's copyrighted. The statue is probably also copyrighted by the creator so it should be avoided. The buildings are much less problematic, so I'll upload those three to Commons. Thanks! Royalbroil 02:15, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Steinthal, Wisconsin-chapel

Hi! I saw your article on Steinthal, Wisconsin. I notice your photo of the chapel. Is there a story about that chapel? I found it interesting. Hope you are doing well. I will be undergoing minor surgery on July 24, but they have to put me under for 20-25 minutes. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 17:40, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I had a newspaper article about the chapel back last year when I took the photos but I don't think I have it any more. The community is really small, it was the most interesting thing! A bunch of high school students were building it. I'll look. If the image is out of place, then feel free to remove it. I'll pray that the surgery is successful! Royalbroil 23:13, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Many thanks-the image is not out of place-it is very interesting.I will try to find some information-RFD (talk) 23:40, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
I looked through my entire stack of Wikipedia source articles and I can't find the article from the Tri-County News (Wisconsin) at nearby Kiel, Wisconsin. I think my cousin (an inactive Wikipedian) might know about the chapel; I sent him an email. I see him at least once in every few months and we frequently talk about Wikipedia. He loves asking about who I've blocked - I just chuckle. Royalbroil 03:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
The reason I am interested in this chapel that a few months ago I came across a story about a young boy from Missouri who had an idea for a small church on his family's property and started to save his money to built it. His parents were not too overly religious but they tolerant it. The little boy even made a model of what his church look like. Unfortunately, the little boy died suddenly and his parents and grandparents built the church and the little boy is buried in the cemetery next to his church. The boy's first name was something like McKendree and it made national news. I am not sure if Wikipedia has an article. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 14:08, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I found it! Mackintyre Garton he was the little boy-[4] I am not sure if Wikipedia has an article about it-thanks-RFD (talk) 14:54, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I would expect this story to be considered a one time event so I'd avoid the topic. I've been talking with my parents about coming to La Crosse for the Oktoberfest race weekend at La Crosse Speedway and I'm seriously considering coming for the Saturday night races. Yeppers buddy. I tried to follow suit, and add what I could. I'll take a look at the Lake Geneva Raceway article too! ... way cool! I have some other pics to upload for Bristol speedway, ones I took during an ASA race in 2007 - once I do - I'm gonna be asking you what I should do with them .... lol. Hey .. I'm surprised you're not at a track tonight! — Ched :  ?  03:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I was going to go to a track tonight but I decided against. First, I went last night which usually doesn't slow me down much. Second, I had an offer from my parents to do an evening road trip to a larger city that I used to live in so I took them up on it. I just got back home. It was lucky that I didn't go - some pop up drizzle came to the area of the asphalt track that I would have attended. That happened last night but it was a dirt track and it kept the track PERFECT after a little grooming. Yea, I am doing good. It's been hard for me to find much Wikipedia time between working full time and going to all of the racetracks. When I do have time, it seems like my ISP fails me. They've been having problems with the weak WiFi signal people like me getting dropped by some mysterious "interference". I've gone to 26 racing events at 20 tracks so far this year. I've been to many of the best tracks already, so my list is thinning. I expect to attend about 30 tracks (the number I went to last year). I did get to attend my first racetrack in Michigan when I was on vacation somewhat near Norway, Michigan.
I looked at the Daytona 500 pole position winners article. It needs all of the sentences/thoughts/stories cited with reliable sources so it needs a bunch more work. Be careful to consider if everything is relevant to the article or if some of the content is WP:TRIVIA. At first glance, I was wondering... Royalbroil 03:53, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Hey RB, so good to catch you online. I've been really unfortunate in regards to attending events lately. My mom is getting up there in years, showing less interest in racing, and demanding more of my time. There is a race coming up Tuesday at Lernerville speedway (sp?), and I have a buddy that will go - so hopefully I can get to that one. Sorry about the ISP failures ... I have 'em too .. lol. Michigan has some great tracks, and some great events - I hope you can get to see some great stuff.
One sad thing is that I can actually hear the sounds of a local track (PPMS - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway), but I haven't been able to create the article yet.
I was wondering the exact same thing about the "pole" article too ... seems like a lot of "trivia" stuff that could be removed - rather than finding resources for it. I kinda hate to just "delete" stuff other folks have added, but I think there's some stuff there that needs to go. I'm gonna keep working on the article since we figured it would be a good FLC. Anything you can add to or improve on is always a plus. I know you're busy with so many things - but just so you know - I really do appreciate all the help you give me.
Anyway - I do have some good shots of the ASA event at Bristol, once I get them uploaded to commons, I'll dump you the links. All my best buddy ... ;) — Ched :  ?  04:20, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK for April Fool's 2010

I understand you have an interest in April Fool's DYK. Question: IF I were to submit an article (i.e. ...that Wikipedia has an article on everything (already done before, but used here for idea concept)) do I submit it under the day created (i.e. Aug 1, 2009) asking for it to be held for April 1, 2010? OR, do I submit it at Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know at Suggestions in the first place (by-passing the normal DYK day created) and list it above the existing suggestion of EME (communications)? THEN, does the 5 day Rule still apply? The article I have in mind will DEFINITELY be a new article altogether and not an expansion from any stub. You can answer here on your Talk page, as I have a watch on it. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:57, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I keep getting accused of be "in charge" of April Fool's Day. An April Fool's Day article would only need to be submitted at Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know. There no reason to submit it in with the normal noms. The 5 day rule has been waived for the last several years. So people started a petition to make everyone wait with DYK April Fool's noms until a certain date, after which any nom (even from earlier creation/expansions) would be accepted. Don't worry about, just nom it when you get done. I have the page on my watchlist, so I'll comment if there's a problem to give you time to add it to the regular DYK noms. Please add noms at the bottom, and use the form from the regular DYK noms. Royalbroil 23:13, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Great. Now I understand when and where to nom it. That was most useful information. I see you also do a lot of DYKs, and write a lot of new articles. IF (big "if) you have time perhaps you can make some comments for inprovments for the article. I'll have a good 6 months to continue to expand and improve it, with others participation (hopefully). I'll have it up before August.--Doug Coldwell talk 11:45, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Keep in mind the article will be about astronomy. --Doug Coldwell talk 13:43, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
I LOVE astronomy! However, I only understand it at the level of someone who took 2 college classes (because that's all they offered). I don't know how you could expand it besides finding books/magazines/newspaper articles on the topic. It certainly needs to be referenced. I usually do either biographies or articles on museums/buildings/historic places. Royalbroil 01:19, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for making WP:NODRAMA a success!

Thank you again for your support of the Great Wikipedia Dramaout. Preliminary statistics indicate that 129 new articles were created, 203 other articles were improved, and 183 images were uploaded. Additionally, 41 articles were nominated for DYK, of which at least 2 have already been promoted. There are currently also 8 articles up for GA status and 3 up for FA/FL status. Though the campaign is technically over, please continue to update the log page at WP:NODRAMA/L with any articles which you worked during the campaign, and also to note any that receive commendation, such as DYK, GA or FA status. You may find the following links helpful in nominating your work:

  • T:TDYK for Did You Know nominations
  • WP:GAC for Good Article nominations
  • WP:FAC for Featured Article nominations
  • WP:FLC for Featured List nominations
  • WP:FPC for Featured Picture nominations

Again, thank you for making this event a success! --Jayron32.talk.say no to drama 02:48, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

NCTS template

Thank you for your recognition, but I must clarify that I just edited the previous template to include the former NCTS tracks, I didn't create it... and figured it wouldn't be useful if the articles it's mentioning don't have it on their article page, so I just went ahead with it... no biggie. -Mattokunhayashi (talk) 18:43, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

... questions at Talk:List of Daytona 500 pole position winners. I think it's getting close, and I'm sure it's much better now than it was 2 months ago. ;) Sorry it's taken me so long to get it referenced, not an easy task. — Ched :  ?  10:19, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I might sandbox the lead and procedure section. There's something there that just doesn't quite sound right, but I can't put my finger on it. I spent 3 hours trying to find a ref for the 1960 item, and I'm still not sure why Owens started 1st, and Roberts 3rd. I know Roberts even won his qualifier - not sure why he wasn't on the pole. Sometimes that old stuff can be tough to track down, but I'll keep digging. Cheers — Ched :  ?  21:02, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if this helps... In the first 1959 Daytona 500, one row was Grand National cars and the other row was NASCAR Convertible Division drivers. That's why there are 2 qualifiers. The Convertible article has details and a reference. Royalbroil 00:17, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I found a good ref for the restrictor plate sizes through 2008 (still need to dig one up for 09). I moved those 2 sections to the talk page. Right now, I think a good going over the lead and "Procedure" section as a final scrub-up might be called for. Don't know if you're interested in doing that, asking S&W to look, ... maybe it needs a complete re-write - I'll leave that part up to you for now. Those early 60's notes I haven't been able to find any concrete wp:rs for yet. I think some of it has to do with the fact that before 71 they counted for points - but that's OR at this point, so I can't really put anything other than what is there into the article. I think we're pretty darn close though. What do you think? — Ched :  ?  05:08, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

←Wow, this is pretty formal stuff. I've just been reading through WP:FLC, WP:FL?, and this tool. Am I right in saying that you'll be the one who actually submits the list? — Ched :  ?  00:14, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

PS - if you do, don't forget me and Doc ;) — Ched :  ?  00:15, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Of course it's formal. Anything featured is formal. The very best stuff. Don't sweat it. I do want to a very thorough inspection of the article. Sift & Winnow's review will help significantly. So it's not ready yet. Maybe we could call in a few more favors and get a few more eyes to look it over. I like to show something like this to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the topic to see if it's readable by the general public. I sometimes use my family.
As for the nomination, I think it should come from you. You would be a better defender since you've been immersed in it. I haven't done very much so far. Let's see how much I get in to it before we nominate it. I'm happy to stand by your side no matter what. Royalbroil 01:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
