Editathon

edit

So, are a lot of people showing up to the editathon? Provided the football game doesn't interfere too much, I should be there about 5:45. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:54, 14 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Nihonjoe: Not a ton of people--my 2 students, plus a third with editing experience, my librarian friend who edits in her free time, and three other people so far (so... 7?). We got pretty good press coverage, but that doesn't always translate into more attendees. I am expecting at least four or five more people this evening though! Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 21:37, 14 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for inviting me. It was a fun event, and I think you should have more in the future. It might be good to make a list with the names of people/topics and then a number of sources for each so editors have a few to draw from instead of just the one bookmark. Since the focus is on editing rather than researching, this may help more articles to be improved. Again, thanks. It was fun to come and participate. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:59, 15 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome @Nihonjoe:; thank you for coming! Oh shoot, did I forget to tell you about our to-do list? It's really easy for me to get sidetracked to the research part. I'd love to do another edit-a-thon in the future; this time I was going for accessibility and hoping to draw in lots of people, but it might make more sense to just plan for smaller numbers and focus on collaboration on few pages. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 15:11, 17 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, if you hold them regularly, people will begin learning about them and the group may grow after time. Focusing on a few articles for each may work better, too (as you said). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 15:22, 17 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
This might be useful in the future. Are you planning to do another one during the science fiction and fantasy symposium (or perhaps the week afterward)? It's February 16-18. If it's the week afterward, you could advertise at the symposium. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:34, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Just making sure you see this one, too, since I made two edits to your talk page.   ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:56, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I asked LTUE a few months ago when you suggested it, and they said that they already had their schedule for the year, but might be interested for 2018. I hadn't thought about doing an edit-a-thon the week afterwards, and unfortunately it's too late for me to get an event open to the public approved for in the library for February. Hmmm.
I've also noticed that edit-a-thon participants rarely become regular editors. The "information literacy" part of it is significant though! Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:59, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps doing 2-4 events throughout the year (maybe quarterly) working with the symposium to work on speculative fiction related articles (could be local speculative fiction people or other local speculative fiction topics)? That might be more interesting to them as it would give them a way to work more with the community and improve resources about the community. Maybe have it be a contest, and have the winner of the contest awarded annually at the symposium? I'm sure we could come up with something cool for an award. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:18, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I like this idea! If we can connect it to BYU somehow, I can more easily help through my job. Maybe I can see if the Leading Edge would want to be involved? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 18:38, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
That would be fine. We could also involve the UVU magazine, Warp & Weave, and maybe try to involve professors at both BYU and UVU. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:51, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oh, good idea. Leading Edge might be interested--I need to work out the details. Contest-wise, I was thinking that it could be for creating or improving articles for SF/Fantasy authors (ideally ones with ties to Utah). I'll need to make the criteria very specific. Should I limit the (still hypothetical) contest to just author pages, or would it be better to include notable works? Sometimes authors themselves aren't notable enough for a page, but one of their books is. What criteria would you suggest for a Wikipedia SF/F writing contest? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:44, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I found the contests page on metawiki, so I'm reading through that, and I'm still interested in your opinions. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:45, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think limiting it to sf/f topics connected to Utah somehow (like improving I Am Not a Serial Killer and I Am Not a Serial Killer (film), both connected to Utah through the author, Dan Wells) would give a sufficiently-broad base on which to draw. It would include authors, works, films, and so on. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:07, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Leading Edge would like to do the contest before the end of the semester (probably this March). I'm drafting some of the rules over at my sandbox; feel free to make edits or suggestions there. Would you be interested in helping with the judging? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 18:47, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I can do that. Just let me know when and what the rules are. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:57, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've drafted some rules here; do you have advice on it? I have some concerns that I'm not sure what to do about:
  • I made categories a specific scoring criteria because I read a study that found that belonging to categories was the best predictor of a page not being deleted.
  • I have a "passes GA review" point category--worst-case scenario is that author GA nominations get flooded and it takes a while to review them. I like including GA though, because it already has clear criteria and a pipeline for communicating pass/fail. I'm not sure what I'd do with pages that I'd normally put on hold though.
  • 3 points for 1,000 bytes is completely arbitrary, and might end up being a big pain to calculate. I'd need to advise participants to not delete and add text in the same edit. But I want to encourage improving existing pages. Hmmm...Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 22:16, 22 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be good to make sure the contest submissions are (at a minimum) long enough to be eligible for DYK, meaning at least 1500 characters of prose (based on the DYKcheck tool). It's really not that hard to write an article that long. I added a link to a copyvio detector, too. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:30, 22 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oh, good thinking, I don't really want to judge new pages that are shorter than 1500 characters. I moved the rules over to a more official-looking GLAM sub-page and tried to tighten them up a bit. For GA reviews we put on hold, we can award an amount of points that seems fair. Leading Edge wants to open the contest to all SF/Fantasy authors, not just Utah-related ones, but I'm afraid the scope might get overwhelming in that case--what do you think? For page expansions, I wrote that it had to be expanded at least 2x, but I haven't thought of a good way to encourage expansion beyond that. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:49, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think it would be good, especially for your purposes, to have at least one of the drives/contests each year be focused on only Utah topics. I don't have a problem with other ones being opened up to any sf/f/h/ah topic, though we may want to coordinate with WP:SCIFI, WP:FANTASY, and WP:HORROR to get a wide variety of input on how it should run and get more people involved. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:21, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Who are the judges for the contest? They should probably be listed on the page somewhere. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:49, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Never mind. I found the list. Should I add myself to it? ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:53, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'd been meaning to ask you if you'd like to help with the judging. Please add yourself as a judge if you're willing. If you find any of the judging criteria unclear, let me know. I was torn on the collaboration thing. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 00:56, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Template:Did you know nominations/Mere Mete Whaanga

edit

Hi Rachel, I came across this nomination while building prep sets for DYK. I would like to know how this and other biographies that are totally sourced to LDS sources, including Deseret News, meet WP:BIO? Have you other experience with biographies in which notability was confirmed even though the sources are not independent of each other? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:10, 29 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Yoninah:, For Mere Mete Whaanga, she's mentioned in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, which I thought was independent enough to establish notability. I have been trying through my students to make a few more pages for Mormon women POC, but unfortunately it might be too soon for some of them. Mere Mete's mentions on the New Zealand Biography site are sparse, although I did find a few articles about her, not her husband, in the Salt Lake Tribune, which I'll have my student add today. If the consensus is to delete the page, we can transfer some of the information about her and her husband to her husband's page. Which other pages were you concerned about? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:02, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Just this page, after seeing numerous other Mormon biographies. The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography is certainly good. Thanks for keeping on top of the need for good sourcing. Yoninah (talk) 18:03, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Yoninah: There was one page, Elizabeth Ann Whitney, which also didn't have very many non-LDS sources on it. It was nominated for deletion, but I think her membership in the Relief Society presidency helped her case? I also found a few mentions of her in the Salt Lake Tribune. Thank you for all your work on the DYK nominations--I know you've frequently helped to improve our pages. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 18:10, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that your writer is using Newspapers.com sources. Do you have a free one-year subscription at WP:Newspapers.com? Then you can make a clipping and reference it via open access. See what I did for one of your references. (I did this to add her link to the page List of people buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, so this page wouldn't be an orphan.) More links to other Wikipedia pages should be added to this article. Best, Yoninah (talk) 18:21, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yoninah We have access to Newspapers.com through BYU; I had no idea about the clippings feature, that's very convenient! I'll tell both my student workers to use it from now on. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 19:55, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Please see new note on this DYK nomination. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 23:36, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi, that was pretty nifty of you to approve the nomination! Regarding the "firsts", there has been a bit of discussion among the DYK regulars, but you would need to get WP:CONSENSUS before making a change at Supplementary Guidelines. Yoninah (talk) 18:48, 3 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mlpearc, I believe that links to archival materials are welcome on Wikipedia. There are guidelines for adding collections to external links sections on The Wikipedia Library guidelines for cultural professionals. It doesn't say that a link must be formatted in a certain way. @Ribbet32: It is kind of a pain to do DYK nominations, but it's a great way to get more visibility for your work, and sometimes it can be fun too. I'm sorry your first nomination got pulled from the main page--it wasn't your fault at all, and maybe I was being too picky on the wording. Hopefully I can be more specific in my future reviews. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:49, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Rachel and Nihonjoe, but it wasn't my first DYK, nor just one difficult situation. The last time I did a review, it wasn't even for QPQ, I did it freely, it was abusive. For all this "We encourage the community to participate" theme in the Rambling Man Arb case, the atmosphere at DYK is completely toxic. Ribbet32 (talk) 18:39, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Ribbet32: I guess I've generally had a different experience then. I'm sorry you have had poor experiences there. If you want to bring something to DYK, but don't want to directly participate there, you can let either myself or Rachel know when an article is ready for DYK, and we can nominate it for you and take care of the process. You would still be named as having worked on the article, but won't have to directly participate. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:53, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Stupid question regarding authorship of Book of Mormon books

edit

Over at wikisource I've been doing some work on some of the PD content we have there related to Mormonism. One of the questions which comes to mind to me, based on my own comparative ignorance of the topic, is which if any of the figures in the various works should be counted as "authors" of the individual works for inclusion in pages such as wikisource:Author:Mormon, and, I suppose, what sort of additional phrasing might be required in some cases. I'm guessing you know more about this than I do? John Carter (talk) 21:30, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

User:John Carter Hmmm. I admit I'm not particularly familiar with how wikisource deals with the authorship of religious texts. There's a list of the books in the Book of Mormon at Outline of the Book of Mormon, which links to pages for each book. On the pages, it usually states who the author is according to the Book of Mormon. I usually look to Biblical examples to model things after, so for example, wikisource:Author:Moses clarifies that the works are "attributed" to Moses. The Book of Mormon gets a bit trickier in its latter half (the "large plates") because as you've probably noticed, the books are abridged by Mormon, but the original authors are rarely noted. Listing Mormon as the abridger seems like a good-enough fix. I can see if there's any current Mormon scholarship on the topic if you like (I don't know off the top of my head). Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 22:38, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Basically, the way they deal with it is whether the individual is counted as being the "author" of the book in question. I'm guessing that would include being either the "original" author or the person who revised or edited the versions available to us. And yeah, you're right, I'm thinking the "large plates" are the biggest part of the problem. I checked against our articles here on them, and in at least a few I didn't find any sort of clear indication as to who might have written them. John Carter (talk) 22:44, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

We noticed though that when you edited Max Steiner filmography, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gordon Douglas. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
