In order for a motorsports figure to merit an article, they must meet one of the listed criteria at WP:NMOTORSPORT or the more general WP:ANYBIO. As the reviewer noted, the sources offered do not seem to have the significant coverage needed. Some of them seem to be blogs, which are not generally considered reliable sources. 331dot (talk) 10:55, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

I find it hard to believe that somebody who was a long-term owner of an F2 team whose drivers included a future F1 champion, who was (albeit for a short time) an F1 team principal, and who was himself a racing driver (including the world famous Daytona 24-hour) is not notable. I can only recommend that you improve your citations and look for more sources, and don't give up. Note that you do NOT have to meet the WP:NMOTORSPORT guideline if you can meet the General notability guideline; that said, Mr Opert may already meet the motorsport notability guideline if he did indeed participate in the Daytona 24. --kingboyk (talk) 01:40, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Draft:Fred Opert - do you have a photo we can legally use?

Hi Peter. Great work on Draft:Fred Opert - it's looking very promising, and I have no doubt that notability is now proven. I've enjoyed finding out about this interesting figure from motorsport history: I have a feeling the name might have rung a bell (hardly surprising, given how many soon-to-be-famous F1 drivers he ran in the lower ranks) but knew absolutely nothing about him until I chanced upon your draft.

Do you have any photographs of Opert or his cars that we can legally use?

• A photograph you took yourself or which you own the copyright on and which you would be willing to licence under an acceptable free license or release to the public domain

• A photograph already in the public domain

• A photograph already licenced under an acceptable free license

Hey Steve, You have done a wonderful job. Thank you. I didn't even realise that the page was live. I scanned a copy of a Fred Opert Racing badge, used on overalls etc. When I tried to load it a filter blocked me. I tried to report the problem but the Caputcha just took me around in circles. I will search for a photgraph in the coming days that should be acceptable. I just had an operation so I haven't had the time I would like to spend on this. An administrator changed the rationale and objected to it; to do either is their prerogative but to both change my rationale and then object to it does not seem fair to me [changing the rationale may have been an innocent mistake]. I've enquired as to their reasoning and if there is any change I can make to the rationale to make it acceptable to them. I think the problem is because it's the logo of Fred Opert Racing in an article primarily about Fred Opert. Will keep you posted but as it stands the image may be deleted. Draft:Fred Opert - Infobox

I've added an Infobox racing driver template to Draft:Fred Opert.

You might want to fill in some of the missing values, in particular years active = . This would be years active as a driver. I gather from the article that the end year would be 1970, but the article is vague as to in what year Fred started racing so I wasn't able to add it myself. You might want to add the series he entered and years (although I suspect that may be quite a lot); you'd certainly want to add any notable titles he won (if there's a Wikipedia article about the title, that will suffice - link to it).

I also added an infobox motor racing team template to the Fred Opert Racing section. I've not put in the year that the team was founded as I don't know (as it looks like Fred raced for his own team so it would be pre-1970). I've not listed the notable drivers in the infobox and propose that we don't, as we already listed many in the prose and there's so many!

I would suggest you add the year founded to the team infobox template, check that I have added the correct racing series, and fill in

|driver titles    = 
|team titles      = 

if the team won any notable driver or team titles.

It's OK for fields to be left blank. For example, the image field is blank in the racing driver infobox as we don't have a free photo of Opert (yet), as is the logo field in the team infobox. Your friend's photo submission to Wikimedia Commons

Hi Peter. Thanks for forwarding me a copy of the photograph of Fred Opert and the email the copyright owner sent to Wikipedia releasing it under a free licence.

I'm no expert on copyright but the email looked fine to me, so I am surprised that I can't find the photograph on Wikimedia Commons. Did your friend receive any reply to their email, whether than be an approval, a rejection or information that there is a delay in processing and that we need to wait?

Yes I do, but my body clock is a bit skew-whiff at the moment.

Gosh, they don't make this easy do they?! I'd have thought they'd upload the photo on his behalf. This is really quite frustrating. If I upload it, it'll probably be deleted as I don't own the copyright.

Quoting the email back to you: "If you have not yet uploaded, please continue to upload the file(s) and let us know when done". I think the best course of action would be to ask the copyright owner to do just that. Upload it themselves and then immediately reply to the email telling Wikipedia it has been uploaded and under what filename (or filenames if both versions get uploaded). A file can be uploaded to Commons using the following link: commons:Special:UploadWizard.

To save going through the process twice, you might want to consider asking the copyright owner to upload both the original and the cropped version, but that's your call.

If this doesn't work, or you need help from somebody else (copyright and the Commons are not my thing) you could put a {{helpme}} request here and maybe somebody else will advise. --kingboyk (talk) 02:09, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

I had an idea: I don't know if the email desk is run by staff or volunteers, but either way they can probably access and restore deleted files, so I don't suppose it would matter if it got deleted after upload so long as an email was sent giving the filename(s). I don't suppose it would matter who uploaded it either.

Another idea is that you ask for help over at Commons. They have a help desk page I believe.

If I knew somebody who is an admin over at Commons and also active here I'd ping them from here to ask for help but I can't think of anybody off the top of my head.

See what you can come up with, and if you have no luck come back to me with a ping and I'll upload it and email them myself or find some other way to get this done. Good work getting that photo uploaded Peter - now forward the Bobby email chain to Wikipedia/OTRS and let them know what filename you uploaded under and hopefully we're sorted! (there is, I have discovered, an OTRS helpdesk but hopefully you can resolve this through email)

In the meantime, I've created a Fred Opert category on Commons, and moved the photo into the infobox in the Wikipedia article.

If you look at the blurb at commons:File:Fred_Head_shot_for_Wiki.png#Summary you'll see that they are waiting for the confirmation email with the filename and permission (which is why I suggest you forward Bobby's original email with a note of the filename, rather than just write with the filename, as you the uploader are not the copyright holder). sigh. Hopefully within a day or so the blurb will be replaced by something like the blurb on this one - commons:File:Penkiln Burn printout 32.pdf#Summary saying that the OTRS process has been completed and the licence is legit. Then we can breathe another sigh, but of relief! :)

It sounds like it's not wise to travel anywhere at the moment. I'd considered getting tickets for the Vietnam GP but thought it imprudent to invest in a trip to a circuit which hadn't been built yet. They got the the circuit ready but had to cancel because of the virus! I was meant to do a book launch in NZ next month but now if you fly to NZ you have to self quarantine for 14 days, so that won't happen. I first visited Cambodia in 2001. It was very different then, but it's still a lovely place if you get yourself out into the provinces (preferably with a motorbike). The place I wish I'd been to sooner is Burma - I didn't go, of course, until after the semi-democratisation because of the horrible government, but the people are so warm and friendly and it is a beautiful country. I was there in the week when their ATMs got hooked up to the international networks, whilst on the same trip I saw people farming the land in the same way my family's farm would have been run 100 years ago and got to ride on rail tracks which appeared to have had little in the way of maintenance since the British built them. That was a wonderful trip. I have yet to get to New Zealand, but I've covered just about every mile of rail in Australia (such a trip would cost a fortune now; back then they offered a rail pass to tourists which was laughably cheap). I spent a year in Australia (2005) on a working holiday visa and hoped I would never return to the UK permanently (maybe I'd get a job offer, or a girlfriend, whatever; sadly that did not come to pass).

What are you writing? I imagine you've had enough of Wikipedia but if not you could always look at getting the Opert article up to B class by expanding on the chronology a bit and making other improvements (I rated it as C-class when I approved the draft), or even go for Good Article and get a badge on it. (I'm not advising you do this, if you have a book to write or journalism which will pay the bills that would be a much better use of time imho). --kingboyk (talk) 01:07, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kingboyk: I'm writing articles mainly, there was the Phillip Island Historic meeting last month and I have one story left to write on that for an NZ magazine. I also write for the national Lotus magazine so there is a member profile still on the list. There's been a lot of work for Writers Victoria - I'm the Secretary, plus all the stuff to help promote the book. But your idea for the Opert page is good. It will be easier once the book is available and can be used for references. I'm putting together a book of my short stories - quite different from motorsport stuff.

Your travel sounds worthy of some stories. It's great you went to Burma, my sister loved it. And Cambodia does sound fascinating, especially the way you did it. Morocco is probably my most adventurous and very engaging. Buenos Aires I loved and would like to go back and see more of Argentina and Chile. There's so much to see. Well, I've been to Cambodia several times. I only started daring to rent mopeds on more recent trips to (my beloved) South East Asia. On my first visit to Cambodia it was mostly bus travel and a boat down the... is it the Mekong which runs to Pnomh Penh? The trains were no longer running, the capital city had no public transport... I digress. And don't mention Lotus! grr! :)

If you start referencing your own book you might have to declare a conflict of interest, so ping me and/or read WP:COI before you start doing that.

@Kingboyk: Thanks for the tip re references. Perhaps better left to others. The Fred Opert Story will be published by Veloce in the UK. It's at the printers in India now. By the time it's shipped back to the UK it will be mid-May availibility. It's strange that South East Asia has never been top of my list to visit although I have been to Malaysia, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and even India on many business trips. I invariably enjoyed my visits (Taiwan was an exception). I have a business associate who served with the peace keeping force in Cambodia. He wrote about his experiences. I helped him. He had a good "voice" but needed serious help with grammar and syntax. He had powerful. moving and sometimes fighteningly funny stories of his experiences. Sounds interesting (the Cambodia stories) - would like to read that. I've only been to India the once - and relatively recently - but intend to go back. I did another of my epic train journeys there - Delhi down to Goa :) Found a great beach shack to rent with a little cafe facing the beach, and a socket to plug the laptop in, pots of chai on the go at 40 rupees a time. Perfect!

As yes, Veloce Publishing, I remember now. Reputable motorsports publisher; has a wiki article in fact. Charles Montier again

Hi Peter. Do you have any references in your book collection (with page numbers) stating what year Montier became a Ford agent? It might also be helpful to know when he moved to Paris. (This source says he moved to Tours in 1911, but gives a date for neither his move on to Paris nor a date for his acquisition of the right to sell Ford cars). --kingboyk (talk) 01:58, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

I've added the photo to ATS Wheels as imho it is better than many of the photos already there - very vibrant. (Or am I biased because my Lotus is chrome orange? :))

Besides knowing who the driver is, it would be very helpful to know when and where and under what circumstances (race weekend? test day? promo shoot?) the photo was taken, if that info is available. Hmm. There's no mention of OTRS on the file page. Hopefully they'll attend to that soon, so that nobody deletes it.

The driver covered in the article Hans Stuck died in 1978... so that'll be... Hans-Joachim Stuck. Yep, his article says he drove for ATS in 1979. Excellent, I'll add that to the ATS article. Please let me know about any further info you may acquire about the photo (besides adding it to the file description), or edit the ATS Wheels yourself :)

@Kingboyk: I got the information from two sources - Larry Opert who took the photo and Marco Tolama who is the one in the photo without ATS team attire. Marco had failed to qualify for the F3 race.

It just worries me that there is no OTRS number on the image. Some people get mighty worked up about copyright and I'm worried it might be deleted. However, I'm a born worrier, and you seem to have everything under control so I shall try to put it out of mind :)

Having such a nice photo of a rare (and rather good looking) F1 car on race day at Monaco of all places is fantastic. Really well done for securing the free licence for it. To ensure that I had the right tone I modelled the article on the published Wheeler Centre article. Hello Robert, thanks for your work in reviewing the Writers Victoria page that I have been working on for some time. When I compare it to the page I modelled it on, The Wheeler Centre, I have trouble seeing the differences. I noted the earlier reviewers notes and reacted to them providing reliable, secondary sources.

You also raised the matter of conflict of interest. I declared the interest that I had when I started this, it is now no longer relevant as I am simply a member of the organisation.
