Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Professor Obar Concerns

Got a message about an hour ago from Professor Obar of the Media and Telecommunication Policy project and I think it is viewed best in full:

Can you please communicate to the online mentors that I DO NOT want them moving student material into the main space for them. This is a big problem. I have noticed that this has happened with a number of the projects already, for example, in the broadband.gov article and the media cross-ownership article. We need the students to be doing this on their own, of course so they can learn how to do it, and also so that I can grade what they've done. How am I supposed to follow student submissions if the data is associated with online mentors? A BIG PROBLEM ALREADY... please help me with this. None of you responded to my post about this on the discussion page. This is about to get out of hand. Jaobar (talk) 05:27, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

With that, of course, please only give instructions on how to move, don't do it for them. Please only let them know what to do and let them do it themselves. about the Qur'anic people

Thank you! In the Qur'anic people template, the thing is that the communities should be specified otherwise it would not be complete; but I cannot find pages to link them to - thus I have made People of Jonah link to Jonah and so on. Thank you for the suggestions. I feel the following can be done:

• taking into account that Elijah preached in Israel, People of Elijah can be removed.
• for People of Jonah, we can list Nineveh, as that is where the prophet preached
• for People of Lot, we can list Sodom and Gomorrah, as that is where the prophet preached
• we can change People of Midian to Midian
• for People of Pharaoh, we can list Ancient Egypt
• And for People of Abraham, we can list Mesopotamia
• for People of 'Ad, we can list 'Ad
• for the People of the Thamud, we can list Thamud

I had suggested the above as they all are pages which link to the page of the place/town/city where the people lived (thus instead of People of Thamud, I suggested Thamud). I do not quite understand what you mean though, as these are the communities mentioned in the Qur'an so I feel they should be in the table. Enoch and Ezekiel

I saw you removed these two figures from this template:

I thought I should tell you that I added them back because Enoch and Ezekiel are not always identified with Idris and Zulkifl; in fact, most modern scholars reject these claims. All scholars, however, regard Ezekiel and Enoch as prophets - whether they support the identification or not, so I thought that both these figures should be in the table. I am glad you are interested in improving the articles about national cabinets. I have reviewed Wikipedia's naming conventions for articles relating to government and legislation and I am not convinced that those guidelines argue for a "Cabinet of country" naming format for national cabinet articles. In the "Adjectival Cabinet" naming format, the subject's name is still present and without disambiguation, therefore it does not contradict the aforementioned naming conventions. Instead, the "Cabinet of country" naming format contradicts the Wikipedia policy about common names, which states that, for article titles, Wikipedia "uses the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources". In the case of national cabinets, the most common names employ the "Adjectival Cabinet" format. A Google Book search results in 8870 hits for "German Cabinet" but only 79 hits for "Cabinet of Germany". Similarly, "Egyptian Cabinet" receives 3550 hits while "Cabinet of Egypt" receives only 155. The "Adjectival Cabinet" format results in the names that are by far the most common in reliable English-language sources. Have I justified the "Adjectival Cabinet" format to your satisfaction?

No, you have not. You have totally missed the point, in fact. The common term is simply 'cabinet' or 'parliament' or 'congress' or 'senator' or 'representative' or whatever else. Within ANY country it's assumed governmental terms apply to that country's own government, and so the name of the country is not included at all in common usage. (The exception being government with multiple levels, in which case terms such as 'state senator' and 'US senator' are commonly used.) You have, however, justified being described as arrogant, self-centered, and dismissive. At Wikipedia we act on discussion and consensus, especially on 'items of long standing. You've apparently decided you're above that, and can freely do whatever you like, perhaps focusing on unneeded and unwanted changes so you can continue to up your edit count? I don't know, and I don't care. I've been too busy working on actual articles about actual cabinets and their actual ministers. Please revert your 'work'. Hi, Neelix! I see from this page that you're the mentor for "Group 22" in the Media and Telecommunication Policy class at Michigan State University. There was a minor kerfuffle recently about a DYK credit for the Free Press article that this group worked on. Would you please take a look at the "template talk" thread for the Free Press article and put the "DYKMake" template into proper order (or do whatever is necessary) to give DYK credit where it's due, i.e. at least to the four students in that group, since I don't know how to do that myself? Template:Federal Ministries of Nigeria

I saw your recent change renaming the title of Template:Federal Ministries of Nigeria to Cabinet of Nigeria, taking out a redirect. I think this is incorrect - but it is my fault for failing to clean up. The ministries and commissions are government organizations headed by career civil servants. The cabinet members are political appointees made by the President. Sometimes one minister is responsible for more than one ministry or commission, and sometimes two or three ministers are responsible for one ministry. In Nigeria there are 36 states and there must be exactly 36 ministers or ministers of state regardless of the number of ministries. I can see from the history that I started the template with the name as a redirect, probably meaning to start a list-type article on Federal Ministries of Nigeria later, then got sidetracked. I disagree with you on the renaming of this article, and despite having read your explanation here regarding the Cabinet of India article, I am not convinced it applies to Saudi Arabia, since the use of English as well as the mentioning of the cabinet is not as widespread as in India. Nonetheless, I think this is trivial and not worth scrambling for information to argue about, and I'll leave it as such. Cabinet of Switzerland

Hi. Today you moved Federal Council of Switzerland to Cabinet of Switzerland. I would like to obtain your agreement to undo this move. There is no such thing as a cabinet of Switzerland, and as such the article title is simply incorrect. The name of the institution is "Federal Council", not "Cabinet", and nobody (really, nobody!) calls it a "cabinet". Yes, this may be inconsistent with other countries, but Wikipedia's job is to reflect reality, not to make reality conform to some standard of coherence. Ow, ow, I just noticed the extent of the normalization. That just isn't right. There is no such thing "Cabinet of Croatia", it's universally referred to as "Government" instead. Err, so that discussion didn't actually include these changes, rather you extrapolated... I think you need to bring this up somewhere else, such as Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (country-specific topics) or similar, meanwhile I'll revert these two because they're against Wikipedia:Article titles. The titles Cabinet of Croatia, or Bosnia, are hardly common, recognizable or natural, despite the fact their components are, so these titles fail the basic title criteria. Economics and energy

Hello-I see your PROD at Economics and energy. I was one of a couple editors who lobbied for that article, and I figured I'd discuss it with you rather than remove the PROD notice and deal with AFD. There was a discussion here.

There was a problem with the energy economics article where various ideas / schools of thought / cross-discipline approaches were at risk of taking over the energy economics article, which should essentially be about the field of applied mainstream economics of energy markets (kinda like agricultural economics). It was clear those needed to be at least very toned-down and probably just entirely removed as off-topic to the article. After discussion, we decided (near the bottom of the thread I linked above) that it might be OK to make a page which was a slightly-elaborated disambiguation page and could help folks find those unusual ideas which might be called "energy economics" or "economics of energy" or such by some group, but that don't fit the (overwhelming) majority use of the term.

Making that page was certainly a kludge, but it seemed the best solution. I'd be curious what you think. CRETOG8(t/c) 00:26, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Ajabaj

Ajabaj is a village in the community of Payahan. By following the link to the French wikipedia, you can get further information, but it seems that Payahan has been renamed sometime between 2001 and 2008. It seems as though Armenia started collecting smaller populated places into "communities" which seem like municipalities on the German or French model, but there doesn't seem much explanation of what got assigned where unless one delves through the census records. I haven't figured out how to have two pins on a map, with 2 different locations; so combining articles loses information. Most individual villages have their own articles, once started. Regardless of how well things go, it'll be a couple of months before we consider asking for a more regular slot. The plan is to use the current luxury of time to ensure that the process is robust enough to cope with the demands of going daily. That said, I suppose a buffer of around 90 accepted blurbs would make just about everyone comfortable, although obviously other people's input would be needed.

Something that we need to be mindful of is that more than a third of featured lists are sports-related (and that proportion is rising, if anything). That poses a double dilemma. On the one hand, if we go daily, 35-40% of TFLs being on sports might be considered excessive. On the other hand, if we don't feature a representative proportion of sports lists, we would be delaying the problem: after 12 to 18 months as a daily slot we could end up in a situation where the majority of lists that haven't been featured are sports related.

Great points! I'll keep those in mind when it comes to scripting the proposal to expand. I guess it's also fair to assume that sports are about to peak, in terms of their percentage of all FLs. It's hard to imagine sports FL editors getting any more prolific than they already are.
