Robert Wade (development scholar) edit

Thanks for contributing new article Robert Wade (development scholar). However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that material must be verifiable, by being clearly attributed to reliable sources. Please help by adding more sources to the article you created, and/or by clarifying how the sources already given support the material (see here for how to do inline referencing). Many thanks! PS If you need any help, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia or ask at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page, or just ask me. Schwede66 21:58, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for providing more references. What a biography of a living person (BLP) needs are inline references - please follow this link for how to go about it. What I find most helpful is to add a 'Cite' button to the editing toolbar. Go to <My preferences> and then to the <Gadgets> tab. Check <refTools>. That makes inline citing a lot easier. Speedy deletion nomination of Anthony Shorrocks edit

A tag has been placed on Anthony Shorrocks requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Hey, did you know that when I templated the article Phyllis Deane, there was only a primary source written by her sourcing the article[3]? Speedy deletion nomination of Vela Velupillai edit

A tag has been placed on Vela Velupillai requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

765 detail edit

Hi, Just done a couple of chnges - minor - to your 765 article. What I dont understand is the reference to 67 being built. Can you point me to the source of the number, or gimme idea of fleet no.s so I can ref from own books and Peter Goulds site. Also added a "keep" to the prop AFD --Keith 10:45, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks - and sorry for what looks like an error - I have tried adding up all the single decker combis from the list at http://www.petergould.co.uk/local_transport_history/fleetlists/manchester2.htm but it comes to nothing like 67... so I must be in error which is a bit worrying. According to my referencing the information came from http://www.mtms.org.uk/ but that site has now I think changed substantially. Thanks very much for this. PS: My dad really like this tram. Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 11:36, 26 June 2010 (UTC))Reply

I am in process of converting Peter Goulds to a straight list, so should be able to come up with a more accurate number (it may be right but built over a number of years --Keith 11:56, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Have complted that exercise - exists as MS eXel file. If you want a copy, then email using my talk page email facility (left hand side). I actually get 69 Single deck Combi with bogies!!! - total 1102 trams - includes 3 from Middleton not used! --Keith 17:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just tried adding up in my head and only got to around 30. Do you think it could be a useful wikipedia list? (19:39, 26 June 2010 (UTC))

Err not really - The Peter Gould list will do most people. My list is same detail but broken down per tram so an entry for 765's section looks like this (765 is correct, but I have altered the notes on the others to give some variety)

Fleet No. SD /DD Top Wheels Trucks Body Seating Built W/D Note
763 Single-deck Combination bogie Brill 22E MCTD 40 1914 1930 entered service over a three-year period 1920-1922. received MCTD bogies in 1928.
764 Single-deck Combination bogie Brill 22E MCTD 40 1914 1930 entered service over a two-year period 1920-1921
765 Single-deck Combination bogie Brill 22E MCTD 40 1914 1930 also quoted as Brush 22E trucks.
766 Single-deck Combination bogie Brill 22E MCTD 40 1914 1930 The Peckham trucks replaced by Brill 21E trucks at a later date and were also top-covered because of a low bridge.
767 Single-deck Combination bogie Brill 22E MCTD 40 1914 1930 Top-covered by 1914, increasing seating capacity to 32/30.

I have placed the file on wiki, on a test area. If you want it then goto User:Manstaruk/Sandbox2

It looks gibberish to look at normal, but if you go in edit mode and copy the whole content, and paste this into a text file, you can then open it in a spreadsheet like excel and see it all in proper colomns. Beware the wiki patrollers - it will not remain there long. Given I have done this in a matter of hours, I make no excuse for any errors - either mine or original --Keith 20:13, 26 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Inés Alberdi edit

Hi, I've tagged this article with a {{multiple issues}} tag for things I feel need addressing. I'm also not sure that the article meets notability guidelines. I hope you plan to continue to improve this article and thus have not CSD or PRODed the article. ialsoagree (talk) 23:44, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the ugly tag as I have added another ref and some formatting and it is I think a bit soon for this. As for notability I am not sure where there would be doubt for this one. (Msrasnw (talk) 00:11, 25 July 2010 (UTC))Reply
Soon for it? I would say that before an article goes up it should be ready for main space, isn't that what user sandboxes are for? In any event, you have touched up the article and notability is more clear now than it was before, so I agree with you there. I have readded the prose tag, now to the appropriate section, as it shouldn't be removed until the issue is addressed. I'm currently trying to go through unreviewed new pages, otherwise I would help by rewriting the section in prose. If you're unwilling/unable to do it, hopefully the tag will prompt someone else too. Cheers! ialsoagree (talk) 00:24, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I see you've already taken care of that section yourself. Nice work on the article. Cheers! ialsoagree (talk) 00:27, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
My first edit to your page was more almost 20 minutes after the article was created (definitely more than 15), and 10 minutes after your latest edit, which is within the guidelines you quoted at me from New_Page_Patrol#Patrolling_new_pages. My second (and only other) edit to your article was, again, about 10 minutes after your previous edit. Please assume good faith in the future. I'm afraid you miss my point: in Dublin, "Full Professor" means "Department Chair." Though generally called "Professor," Prof. Keyes in fact seems to be an Associate Professor. This is of course a much higher position than "Professor" in the USA. However, her notability would be based on WP:PROF. -- Radagast3 (talk) 22:16, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Filip Mentel edit

You may also wish to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Filip Mentel, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

not valid until played senior game

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay.

Your userpage is in a category edit

Your userpage User:Msrasnw/EconomistLettersList has a category, and so appears in Category:Musical groups established in 1962.
As the guideline on userpages describes, this is undesired. It is suggested that you edit the userpage to prevent this showing. It can be done by adding a semicolon (:) before the word Category, like this: [[:Category:Musical groups established in 1962]].

Nah, nothing "foolish" around here. Just human behaviour. More like I'm trying my new message template ;-). btw, is the text friendly enough? -DePiep (talk) 23:48, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Changed "semicolon" into "colon", sure. For now, no phrasing change, because I think your suggestion is very circumventing. The template is {{uw-upincat}}, and people more involved are working here: Wikipedia:WikiProject user warnings. -DePiep (talk) 00:13, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

L'Organisateur edit

I know you don't like tags and things. but the reference you provided to L'Organisateur, an article you created, is inadequate. The idea behind contributing to the Wikipedia is to increase it as a knowledge base by providing information from verifiable, reliable sources. (See WP;RS, WP:V, WP:CITE). File source problem with File:Le censeur cover Vol1.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:Le censeur cover Vol1.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 22:19, 18 September 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. I wasn't able to access many of the resources I cited in the AfD for Erich Albrecht since most of these have been shipped offsite from our library for storage as older items. However, I was able to get hold of one of the Who's Who in America (Chicago : Marquis Who's Who, 1981) entries (I think this was the last time he showed up there). Feel free to use and cite directly to bolster the article, or to follow up on some of the information (e.g., the books he's published). This is an exact transcription of the entry for him (all abbreviations are exactly as printed) except that I did highlight a couple of items. I think the key ties to Albrecht the translator and Albrecht the academic are that he served in the US Army 1942-45, and was appointed Special Consultant to the Secretary of war in 1945.

Ah. It looks like Deutschland im Umbruch, 1938 is an article, and Primitivism and Related Ideas in 18th Century German Literature is his thesis from Johns Hopkins (held by a number of libraries). --Quartermaster (talk) 13:46, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Carrigaline Pottery edit

A tag has been placed on Carrigaline Pottery requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Thanks for your contributions to Edward Drobyshevski edit

I just wanted to thank you for your contributions to the Edward Drobyshevski article. Without your valiant efforts, the article would almost certainly not have survived AfD. Furthermore, even though he's a fringe source, he's now a fringe source with reliable source coverage so that some sort of decent wikipedia article can be written. Out of curiosity, is there anywhere on the internet or wikipedia that gives a list of alternate Russian transliterations? The difficulty of google searching the wrong transliteration has come up on other Russian individual articles as well.... Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your effort. :) Sailsbystars (talk) 12:52, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

NPP edit

I know all about working from the back of the list - BLP and establishing its policy is one of my main activities here. I have worked off three whole days of backlog (about 2,000 article - check my logs) single-handedly in the last couple of days, with less than a 1% error rate ;) --Kudpung (talk) 19:30, 15 October 2010 (UTC) - BTW, we don't work from the bottom of the list on BLP. The reasons are obvious, but if you would like some help, don't hesitate to ask.`(politely of course). --Kudpung (talk) 19:37, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dear Kupdung, I do not feel your approach is helpful but hope you are having fun. This appears to me relevant here: Wiki-hounding is disruption to another user's own enjoyment of editing, or to the project generally, for no overriding reason. If "following another user around" is accompanied by tendentiousness, personal attacks, or other disruptive behavior, it may become a very serious matter... Your Jacques Faivre article that I mentioned in our last acrimonious interchange I guess still needs proper referencing if you want to be more constructive than just adding stub tags to all my articles. :( (Msrasnw (talk) 20:51, 15 October 2010 (UTC))Reply
Stub tags are not a criticism of your, or anyone else's valuable contributions to the encyclopedia. Every new article that is correctly written and referenced, and is clearly of encyclopedic value, however short, is a net benefit to the knowledge base that this encylopedia has become. You may update or reclassify them at any time of course, as well as all the other additions editors make to articles you have created - all improvements are appreciated. Also, don't hesitate to consider lending a hand at the enormous backlog tasks of stub sorting and new article patrolling that the handful of volunteers are trying to do their best at. We genuinely do need all the help we can get, even if we do occasionaly make near misses. It will help to reduce the error rate. BTW: I don't recall ever having written a Jaques Faivre article, perhaps you mean the direct translation I made of of this of which of course the English translation is more accurately composed and sourced than its French original. Nevertheless, you and anyone else can naturally feel free to improve it.--Kudpung (talk) 02:44, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:DublinersStamp2006.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:DublinersStamp2006.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 17:20, 2 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I removed this image because non-free images are not allowed in list articles per WP:NFLISTS. Hope you are not too upset as this was its only use. ww2censor (talk) 17:22, 2 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reply I am obviously disappointed (but not upset :)) as I was rather keen on Luke Kelly and the list looks a bit dry without pictures. I had thought that non-free images were allowed in lists so long as it was done judiciously - but anyway.. ...
* I think your claim that non-free images are not allowed in list articles per WP:NFLISTS. is wrong and perhaps should be reworded to reflect what the policy is?
Perhaps Non-free images should only be judiciously used in list articles per WP:NFLISTS
* Also does the same apply to our lovely Louis le Brocquy (this does have a mention in the lead) and Margaret Burke Sheridan stamps or are they somehow different? (They are both far nicer than the Dubliners stamp!)
Best wishes, (Msrasnw (talk) 20:23, 2 November 2010 (UTC))Reply
I happened to be working on the 2005+ section adding some references to recent issues and due to recent discussions about use of non-free images in lists decided to remove it. I may have overstated the policy but we should remember the use of non-free images that can be replaced with free ones don't comply with the non-free policy and should not be used, besides which WP:NFLISTS #6 also says that: Consider restricting such uses to ... elements or those that cannot be described easily in text. We don't describe any of them so unless we were to describe each stamp we wanted to include, we might leave ourselves open to the situation that has arisen recently where some people have argued that the list of Eastenders characters could possibly end up with 400 non-free images though it now seems they have all been deleted. Obviously this was an extreme situation but I think the other non-free images should really be removed (one even I uploaded) but I am open to any justification. BTW do you know you can use the {{Talkback}} template to notify an editor of a message on your talk page. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 17:51, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks (yes I know about talkback but prefer a personal approach) Also I think overstating policy might not be a wise strategy in future. But leaving the other nicer non-free stamps on the list seems to me fine. Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 20:07, 4 November 2010 (UTC))Reply

You have done a MARVELOUS job so far. edit

This is one of the more heated AfD discussions I've seen in a long time and you really have done a heroic job of rescuing the article. No user would have nominated this for deletion had it first appeared this way. My guess is that it will be kept and should be kept. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 19:23, 14 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Actually, I'm about to change my vote to a firm keep. It's a great rescue, the sources notable and is worth keeping if the author doesn't start putting the promotional material back in it.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 15:28, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re your message edit

No problem; I'll give it another look. I was actually thinking about it earlier, but I had to take the GREs today so I've been out. I'll definitely give it another look, and see what new sources there are. I'm always happy to keep content; my AfD record is a bit misleading, as I usually only do AfDs that are 1 step away from being snowed out. Thanks and I hope your results for the GRE go well. (Msrasnw (talk) 23:05, 14 November 2010 (UTC))Reply
I did give it a look, and I think the closing admin summed it up pretty well; I completely forgot to go to the AfD and change my vote, though, because another dispute blew up elsewhere. It looks much better now. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 17:47, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Anthony Barnes Atkinson edit

Guilty as charged! No idea why I did that, he's not even on the List of people from Cranbrook, Kent and isn't linked to the Cranbrook, Kent article (which is how I've been compiling the templates). No problem with the removal in this instance. Mjroots (talk) 17:21, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Eureka!!!! Cranbrook School, Kent#Notable alumni. Seems he's an Old Cranbrookian, which makes the template valid, wouldn't you say? Mjroots (talk) 17:27, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm in two minds about the template appearing on articles where the person appears in a list of people from (place). It seemed like a good idea, but there have been a few objections. For those that have already been added, I'm not minded to remove the templates, but on the other hand, I'm not adding the templates for other towns and villages where the person appears in such lists. The issue raised here is that ABA being an OC needs sourcing. Mjroots (talk) 17:32, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes! :) (Msrasnw (talk) 17:37, 30 November 2010 (UTC))Reply

BLP help edit

  • Hello, I noticed on my watchlist that you had Claire Jowitt restored to you for sourcing, and saw you do good work on academic BLPs, so I wanted to mention the existence of the Wikipedia:Unreferenced BLP Rescue Project to you. We are working to eliminate unreferenced BLPs on wikipedia, going thru one month of tagged articles at a time. We aren't necessarily subject matter experts though, we are just trying to improve articles that have been without references or attention for 2+ years in many cases, and this does lead to deletion nominations when we can't find sources. The more eyes we have helping us, the better. Perhaps if you swing by you can check out the current month we are working on, June 2008, to see if there are any academics that interest you. Cheers.--Milowenttalkblp-r 14:27, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. People on our project have varying views regarding inclusion/deletion (I am big inclusionist myself, but my expertise is not in sourcing academics), but we all want to see BLPs get sourced whenever they can. For instance, if you'd been around when this one came up, it may not have been deleted. When you add some sources, but the article could use more, you can update the BLPunreferenced template to BLP sources to encourage others to continue what you started.--Milowenttalkblp-r 21:08, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Here's an academic Lisa Lowe...--Milowenttalkblp-r 22:11, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Dear Milowent, I have added a ref. to Dr Lowe's page but my feeling, at the moment, is that I think I would prefer to be working on ones in which I have an interest or knowledge (and these are quite wide ranging) - or perhaps both. I don't know much about comparative literature - and I am not sure about the need to save (not that I want to delete) a prof. at a big US uni. while we delete leading full profs. from the UK, Russia, India, China etc... Anyway - best wishes :) (Msrasnw (talk) 23:39, 9 December 2010 (UTC))Reply
I'll keep that in mind when I see one of those folks up for potential deletion. Thanks for looking at that one! Cheers.--Milowenttalkblp-r 21:17, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Prof Jowitt edit

Re your comment concerning CJ at mine, I know you're right about notability as far as reinstatement is concerned, and I'm sure Hon Sec of Society for Renaissance Studies will be authoritatively deemed equivalent to bingo-calling at a day centre, but as a general user of Wikipedia articles I just like a bit of illustrative material as well. I never cease to be amazed how determined some people at Wikipedia are not to allow knowledge to be made available to people who are looking for it. Why not allow a redirect to a User Page? Why do Pikachu characters appear to need less supporting evidence of notability than academics who apparent fellow-academics snoot at as "run-of-the-mill"? We get asked to help reference UBLPs today and once we've done it they get deleted tomorrow, but we keep at it, just so as not to give in! Opbeith (talk) 00:08, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes - we should just keep trying to make things better despite the less constructive approach of others. Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 00:18, 10 December 2010 (UTC))Reply

Proposed deletion of Hla Myint edit

The article Hla Myint has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not Notable. Also: No reliable sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
