Your archiving bots

Per WP:ARCHIVE, it suggests placing {{talkarchive}} to both the top and the bottom of the archive. Could it be possible for your bots to do this automatically?  The Windler talk  12:52, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Would be possible if I had the time to work on the bot, which I don't. Миша13 15:58, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, just food for thought when you do have time. Thanks,  The Windler talk  21:42, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

/dev/null

Please stop removing messages entirely. If something's wrong with the archiving code, then don't archive, but you are presumably not authorized to remove messages without archiving. --NE2 14:31, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea what page are you talking about, so if I were to make a wild guess, someone compacted the template into one line (removed linebreaks), which is exactly against the instructions. Or, someone left the archiving target blank, which is a legitimate way of automatic removing without archiving (everything stays in the page history, so you are not obliged to archive anywhere). One way or the other, bugs me. Don't like it? Don't use it. I'm not getting paid for this job. Миша13 15:52, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not using the archivebot, but a talk page I have on my watchlist is, and I've been reverting your bot's edits as vandalism. Can you show me where your bot is approved to remove messages? Thank you. --NE2 16:15, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Archiving through removing is an accepted practice. My bot is approved as an archiving service and enables that. Миша13 16:38, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Archiving through removing involves another step: a permanent link to the history. Without that, your bot is broken. --NE2 17:13, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Why not just fix or remove the archiving code if it bothers you. It is not Misza's fault that someone set up the page in question incorrectly and/or in a way you don't like. (I'd do it myself, but you haven't specified the page) --ThaddeusB (talk) 18:32, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is his fault, however, that his bot fails ungracefully. --NE2 19:23, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Is it the bot that fails gracelessly or is it the users? Agree with the above from Misza. IF you don't want the archiving, simply remove the relevant code and the problem is solved. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:17, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're not understanding. I am a third party here. One editor added the archiving code to a project talk page. Another later combined it all on one line, without realizing that this would screw up the bot (how is anyone to know unless they are the one adding the code?). Now I notice, three months later, that the bot has been misbehaving. Sure, I could fix the code, but I'd rather teach the bot to fish, so next time it won't need someone like me to realize it's out of fish. --NE2 22:11, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps you could link the page in question... –xeno talk 22:12, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm assuming good faith here that you need confirmation and aren't just going to give the bot a fish. Please don't disappoint me: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rivers. This is the edit that broke the bot, doing what seemed like cleanup. --NE2 22:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, you caught the issue in two days...oops misread history Perhaps MiszaBot could log archiving to /dev/null unless it's explicitly set that way. *shrug*. no fish for the bot, but i left a trout for the next user who tries to muck about with the page code. –xeno talk 22:27, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

So, Misza13, are you going to change anything? --NE2 12:51, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

No, I'm not. I'm extremely busy in real life and other projects and don't have time to develop this bot further. I have a side project of implementing a MediaWiki bot framework from scratch, in Java, and possibly rewrite the archiving bot to use that, but that'd be a matter of months to come. Anyone with knowledge of Python can however develop the current bot as it's part of the pywikipedia framework. Миша13 18:37, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

will this work?

The talk on Template talk:2009 swine flu outbreak table is split into two sections - the main page and Template talk:2009 swine flu outbreak table/Region specific discussions. Ideally, I'd like the archives to one place. I had cluebot set up, but it refused to archive the subpage either to the main archive or to a special archive for that page. As such, I am trying out MiszaBot instead. My question is will this work as intended on the subpage:

{{User:MiszaBot/config
|algo = old(48h)
|archive = Template talk:2009 swine flu outbreak table/Archive %(counter)d
|counter = 1
|maxarchivesize = 200K
}}

Thanks for your time, --ThaddeusB (talk) 15:03, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Archiving to a non-subpage is not allowed by default but I have provided the page with a security key. Миша13 15:47, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
It worked! Thanks a lot! --ThaddeusB (talk) 18:28, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Key for the archivebot

Hey Misza, I've registered a sock account for making certain types of edits at certain types of computers (User:Fox) and I would like to be able to archive posts on the sock's talk page (User talk:Fox) to my own archives (subpages of User:Foxy Loxy) so that I can keep things all in the same place. So; I can haz bot key? ;) Thanks, ~fl 09:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Television_Stations

The first section of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television Stations is not being archived. Any idea why? Vegaswikian (talk) 17:52, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is because User:Neutralhomer has a non-standard sig. If he is the only participant in the thread, MiszaBot won't archive that thread. –xeno talk 17:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't aware my sig could goof up the archive bot. Is there anyway to fix this so I can have the same sig (I kinda like it) and so everything works properly? - Neutralhomer (talk) 23:29, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
The main problem is the lack of a proper timestamp. That's all MiszaBot looks for AFAIK. –xeno talk 23:29, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
After some tinkering, we have a correct time code in the sig :) Thanks to Xeno. - NeutralHomerTalk • 23:52, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

User talk:Ukexpat not archiving?

Resolved
 – ukexpat (talk) 16:47, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

It looks like the bot hasn't archived my talk page for a few days. Is there I problem at my end? Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 20:43, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I took a look and none of the usual reasons seemed to exist... Misza? –xeno talk 15:47, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, I just happen to occasionally just fix things and not neccessarily leave a reply. ;) Миша13 16:27, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK great, thanks for that, issue resolved! – ukexpat (talk) 16:47, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Apologies Misza, I did indeed see your fix a day or two ago, and I seemed to have totally forgot when leaving this followup. Can I claim old age? ;> –xeno talk 16:49, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

simple wikipedia

I'm not sure how difficult it is to set up bots, but I was wondering if you could set up a bot like MiszaBot III to work at simple wikipedia. Griffinofwales (talk) 20:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Archive boxes not being added to talk page

Hi, I noticed that over at WT:CONSENSUS, the archive pages 7 and 8 (eg Wikipedia_talk:Consensus/Archive 8 haven't been added. Here, for example, threads were archived into 8, but as of today the archives shown on the page only go to 6. II | (t - c) 00:14, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The bot does not maintain archive boxes. Миша13 11:30, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Setup correctly?

Hi

I was just wondering if you could tell me if the auto archiving is setup correctly for these two http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Attention-deficit_hyperactivity_disorder and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:DreamHost Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194x144x90x118 (talkcontribs) 12:38, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Seems fine to me. Миша13 16:17, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Importer Bot malfunction

Hi, forgive me if the problem is somewhere else as I haven't looked very deep, but there seems to be some kind of problem with Wikinews Importer Bot (talk · contribs). If you check current events two of yesterday's Wikinews articles are missing - British House of Commons' Speaker addresses Parliament ahead of vote of no confidence and Spanish general, two other officials jailed for false IDs after air disaster. Any idea what's going on? Other than that, though, great job getting the bot running and keeping it going, I don't want to make my comment all negative! Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 09:24, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The first is on Portal:Current events/Wikinews/Today-2 (as of now; may move to "Today-3" in a few hours). I can't see the second, but it's nowhere to be found on wikinews either: Wikinews:Wikinews Importer Bot/Today-1. Миша13 22:45, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wow, thanks! Миша13 08:54, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Btw, something about the subst: in your template doesn't seem to work as expected - it's producing more wikicode junk than I guess you wanted it to. Cheers, Миша13 09:03, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category rename

Together with User:Rich Farmbrough we are doing a little standarisation. In connection with this we would like to rename all dated categories in Category:Wikipedia files with unknown source from "as of" to "from". This might make working with files tagged before 24 May 2009 a little more complicated as they might show up in any of the two categories if the file was tagged by transclusion in stead of substitution, but that should be a matter of two weeks at most, while files tagges from 24 May 2009 onwards will be in the new category. You might want to reflect this on User:MiszaBot/Trackers/CAT:NS. Please contact me on my talkpage if any problems. Thanks, Debresser (talk) 19:50, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Carnildo reverted the edit because of the OrphanBot he runs. Please see User_talk:Rich_Farmbrough#Di-no_source for the discussion if and how to do this. Debresser (talk) 22:48, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

My bot should be able to track them both even at the same time if required, but do give me a note on the final decision regardless, please. Миша13 08:59, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

MiszaBot on other wikis

I've seen MiszaBot doing archiving over at meta, and it seems it's chugging away on a few other projects as well. Would it be possible for you to get it running over at mediawiki.org?? One doesn't realise how amazingly valuable auto-archiving bots are until you go somewhere where there aren't any :D Happymelon 21:59, 19 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll see to it soon. Миша13 22:46, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yay! Give me a ping when you've got it going. Thanks! Happymelon 23:05, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
The da Vinci Barnstar
Assuming it works, of course... if not I'll take it away :D Happymelon 16:25, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Looks good! One thing more: the Support desk archives are, I've just learnt, not subpages of the respective desk pages, they're in a separate tree. IIRC MiszaBot usually demands a special key to allow archives to be not subpages; is it possible to disable this for mediawiki.org? If not, can we have a batch of keys please? Happymelon 21:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually, someone has just pointed out a bug: in this diff, at the section marked "line 382", the bot removes a section defined inside <pre>...</pre> tags, removing the header, some of the content of the tag, the closing </pre>, and the rest of the actual thread. Presumably that's not a mw.org-specific bug, but general. Thanks, Happymelon 10:35, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I know. It's an uncommon bug caused by the fact that the bot does not have a true wikitext parser (I don't know if one even exists, except the one built into MediaWiki). Replacing the equal signs (even only the first one) with their equivalen HTML entities should do the trick in those cases.
Also, I have provided security keys for pages on mw.org. Миша13 20:42, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lovely, thanks again! Happymelon 22:03, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bot not archiving a thread

It seems that MiszaBot III is missing a thread on my talk page. Is it because of the periods that Rich Farmbrough used at the end of his signature?--Rockfang (talk) 00:57, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rich doesn't include a comma after the time in the timestamp. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:09, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the info.--Rockfang (talk) 01:10, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
