No help

I am so sorry, but as I attempt to date-base archive my very lengthy talk page, I find your instructions less than comprehensible. So far I have (with parentheses instead of the curved brackets, so what I've actually entered at the top of my talk page will show here):

((User talk:Tbrittreid/config
|algo = old(365d)
|archive = User talk:Tbrittreid/Archive/%(year)d/&(monthname)s
[other parameters - ]
))

The "other parameters" line did not appear to be mandatory for this, but without it I got a red link. Is it supposed to be red until the bot actually archives the old stuff? Do I need to specify parameters? If so, I have no idea whatsoever as to how to determine what my "other parameters" should be. Please help. --Tbrittreid (talk) 00:15, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Like the box says, you were supposed to look at specific examples and choose the method you want. And the section "Parameters" explains the parameters have default values. You did almost good, just no clue why you decided to change the template to a non-existent page. Миша13 10:41, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but I am still not comprehending. I could not tell what specific examples I was to choose between, what would or would not be good for me (why didn't "I have no idea whatsoever as to how to determine what my 'other parameters' should be" communicate that to you?)—I wanted the threads-1-year-or-older thing, hence "365" in the days slot, which is not at all what's happened—and I have no idea what you're referring to when you say I "change[d] the template to a non-existent page." --Tbrittreid (talk) 23:58, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
How about "Example 1", "Example 2" and "Example 3"? These are minimal representations of their respective archiving methods and need no further parameters. These are, however, explained in detail on the "Parameters explained" section.
I don't know what you really wanted, but it seems all threads older than one year got archived.
And what you placed on your talk page was User talk:Tbrittreid/config, a non-existent template (which is why you got the red link), instead of User:MiszaBot/config, which is what the manual instructs you to do.
If you still cannot comprehend, I cannot help you any further. Миша13 06:26, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
  1. Those "examples" are so "minimal" that I have no idea how they work, no idea which would give me the effect I want, which leads into the following:
  2. I now have an archive for each of most months (presumably there were no posts to my talk page in the scattered months not named on the list) since I have been working on Wikipedia (23 out of 36 that have actually passed). That's not what I see on other talk pages and not what I want, although I admit that this is an improvement. I want the "archiving threads more than a year old" that I've seen on others, not up to just last month.
  3. "The exact code below will not work" and other statements/examples led me to believe I needed to put the name of my talk page in place of "Miszabot." Obviously that was not your intent, but I now have no idea what is supposed to be changed.
  4. If you "still cannot comprehend" my problems, somebody else should be doing this. To put it another way, just because you knew what you were talking about when you set up that "instructional" page doesn't mean everybody else does. --Tbrittreid (talk) 21:39, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Your page now has no threads older than 365 days - what more do you seek? –xenotalk 21:45, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
It actually has no threads older than ten days, while I want to still have threads going back about a year. Maybe just six months. And the unavoidable implication of the archive list which I described above is that the bot is going to archive me every month. --Tbrittreid (talk) 22:10, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
It has plenty of old threads, "Danger Man" dates Feb '09, so is "Moving Mission: Impossible"; "Queen of Swords" is from April '09 and so on. According to my calendar, all this happened way more than 10 days ago.
And the format Archive/year/month you chose by following example 3, even though the earlier example 2 is the most common solution, and explained in more detail.
And if the instructions still were not clear enough for you, then:
a) either you should have just asked me - I (or someone else stalking this page ;)) would gladly set up archiving in a manner of your choosing,
b) or indeed someone else should be archiving your talk page (there is at least one other bot). Personally, I couldn't care less - it's not like I'm being paid per page archived...
Миша13 23:10, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I came here to apologize for having misread the archive list and the date on the top post, and found the above. I am so sorry for my mistake. The only problem remaining is the large archive box, which is no real problem to live with at all. Again, I offer my most humble apologies, and my thanks for the job. However, I must stand by my criticism of the instructions as assuming more internet technical knowledge by any one who comes here than is justifiable. --Tbrittreid (talk) 23:38, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

No problem. Though the instructions will have to stay as they are, unless some good soul does that for me - I don't have that much time anymore and I'm also too much into this business to put myself into your shoes. I can just tell that the average user eventually manages to set everything up properly.
However, if you don't like the current setup, we can still revert it. Let me know what you prefer. /Archive 1, /Archive 2 and so on? This seems the most common setup, though I use the year/month scheme (then again, I have a custom archive index). If so, what preferred maximum size of one archive (before moving to the next number)? The default is 250 kilobytes, which proved optimal.
I can always restore what the bot removed, reconfigure, and delete the month-based archives.
Or whatever else, as long as I know what you really want. Миша13 00:01, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

MiszaBot III issue

Hi Misza13, it looks like MiszaBot III has stopped archiving at User talk:Russavia... my talk page hasn't been updated in a few days. Any ideas what's happened? Thanks! - Tbsdy (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 12:07, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Let's see... algo = old(7d) - only one thread qualifies, "DYKs".
Next, minthreadstoarchive set? No, therefore the default value of 2 holds.
With only one thread archivable and two being the allowed minimum, the bot passes on. Миша13 16:54, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Were you looking at User talk:Russavia? I think I may have been a little unclear, because MiszaBot III never got to my talk page and there were a lot of archives that I'd have thought should have been archived. However, the bot seems to have archived my talk page now, so all's well that ends well :-) Btw, I really have to say that your bot rocks, and I think what you are doing is a fantastic service for Wikipedia! Thanks Misza, I don't want to seem unappreciative. - Tbsdy (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 00:46, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Either the bot died at Russavia or by some strange coincidence no one past Rus* had anything to archive =) Nonetheless you still wouldn't have gotten treatment per your minthreadstoarchive setting. –xenotalk 14:27, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I had more than 2 threads to be archived. Anyway, all good now :-) Thanks Misza! - Tbsdy (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 14:36, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Maximum Threads Parameter

It seems that the goal in setting up archives is to limit the size of the page to something that can be easily navigated. A useful way to do that would be to automatically limit the number of threads (or the size of the page), stripping off the older threads and leaving the new ones.

Would it be possible to add two new parameters: one to set the maximum number of threads and the other the maximum size of the talk page? (I just checked your archives and see that you'd commented earlier that implementing a maximum size would be difficult. Would a parameter that sets the maximum number of threads be feasible? --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 22:30, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Hispanic and Latino Americans

Hello, I've tried to set up an automatic archive at Talk:Hispanic and Latino Americans. I put up the code 2 days ago but nothing has been archived yet. It's my first time setting this up so I'm not sure what I did wrong. If you could help me out it would be much appreciated. Thanks.--Jersey Devil (talk) 12:14, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think I fixed it; the archiver was pointed to "User talk:" rather than "Talk:".
—WWoods (talk) 20:39, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Which bot?

Love the bot, my talk page would be a disaster without it. :)

At Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion/Current requests we remove requests that have had no comments (either by requester or admins) for more than two weeks. So, rather like a talk page. Will one of your bots be able to archive these? Looking at the instructions, it doesn't seem like there's one set up for the Wikipedia namespace. Thanks!--Fabrictramp | talk to me 14:20, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

contributions works the mean streets of WP: space, they all share a common config so just toss up the template and it the magic should happen. –xenotalk 14:26, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much!--Fabrictramp | talk to me 14:35, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Okay, clearly I've fouled up the template request, as the bot is not archiving. Would some clueful person mind looking at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion/Current requests and show me the error of my ways? Thanks!--Fabrictramp | talk to me 22:51, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
There's only one section — "Current requests" — and one of its subsections has a comment dated "9 February 2010". :-)
—WWoods (talk) 01:34, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
So the bot can't archive subsections. Rats, but thanks. :)--Fabrictramp | talk to me 14:36, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Maybe if we used a =First level header=... or just do away with the top headers... –xenotalk 14:39, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Looks like someone has now changed the == header to a =first level header= and changed the ==== headers to == headers. Crossing my fingers that it does the trick.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 14:47, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the tinkering, Misza -- working like a charm! --Fabrictramp | talk to me 15:22, 10 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Hannah Giles

Miszabot deleted from Talk:Hannah Giles, but didn't save to /Archive 1. Some sort of bad external link?
—WWoods (talk) 08:00, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't like • perhaps? - Tbsdy (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 14:38, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Wwoods was right it was the examiner.com links which are blacklisted - but typically Misza just refuses to act at all rather than deleting the content and not archiving it. –xenotalk 14:46, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
This sort of silent failure seems like a Bad Thing. Is there some way to write the bot to try to save first, and then if that doesn't work, skip deleting? Better yet, to post a comment explaining what went wrong?
—WWoods (talk) 20:49, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's the typically expected behaviour (simply not act), Misza13 will have to chime in as to why that didn't happen here if he has any idea. –xenotalk 20:51, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I checked the logs from that days. For that page there was just this:
Creating page [[Talk:Hannah Giles/Archive 1]] via API
Updating page [[Talk:Hannah Giles]] via API
And no error messages whatsoever. Seems like once in a while the API fails to commit the edit but does so silently. The logic of my program is helpless when this happens. Миша13 23:36, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Archive bot

Recently, I have been thinking of using an archive bot to archive my talk page but, currently I am archiving my talk page every 30 comments. I would like to start using an archive bot to archive my talk page every month. Would it be possible to delete my previous archives, when I have moved their content onto my current talk page. Also, will the bot continue with my user theme (the blue border and menu) on the archive. Please leave a talkback template on my talk page when you answer this. Thanks--Pianoplonkers (talk • contribs) 17:16, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Bot

The Bot is not working at White Latin American Talk page--Wikiscribe (talk) 22:09, 14 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

There are only 5 sections; by default, the bot won't act when there are so few. If you wish, you can override the default by adding "|minthreadsleft = " to the bot's code with the desired number. See User:MiszaBot/config for more details and options.

Bot (III) not accepting maxarchivesize value on my User Talk

Hi, I have the following code on my talk for MiszaBot III:

{{User:MiszaBot/config |maxarchivesize = 125K |counter = 1 |minthreadsleft = 1 |algo = old(5d) |archive = User talk:Umrguy42/Archive %(counter)d }} (these are on separate lines, just the nowiki tag put them all together)

The bot's been working fine, but User talk:Umrguy42/Archive 1 was over 126KB before the bot made its pass today, and it just added it to the first archive. Am I missing something needed to get it to start Archive 2, or what? Thanks for your help. umrguy42 00:56, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

That's probably because I'm using the historic definition of a kilobyte, where KB = 210B = 1024B. Hence, 125KB = 128000B, and the archive hasn't passed that mark yet. If it does, and the bot still puts threads in it, let me know. Then again, probably should change that. Then yet again, meh... Миша13 07:31, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, silly me, for thinking that the size value that shows up in the pop-up was ALSO in that same definition ;P Thanks for the explanation, will let you know if it doesn't work. umrguy42 14:02, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just a follow-up, tweaked the settings, let the bot re-do the archiving, and it started a new archive this time. Thanks! umrguy42 05:14, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Archive problem on 20 August 2009

Talk:Bob Ainsworth was archived to "/dev/null/" on 20 August 2009 (diff). Was this a deliberate deletion? If so: why? If not: please can you restore the deleted content and archive it correctly? Thanks! - Pointillist (talk) 23:22, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

See Talk:Bob Ainsworth#Fixing MiszaBot archiving. The template at the head of the page was set up wrong. I hope it is fixed now. I left it to Some Other Editor to fetch the two incorrect archivings and put those missing threads where they ought to go. Copy them into a new file called Talk:Bob Ainsworth/Archive 1. Archiving Recommendations

Bot malfunction

I looked over the archiving for the page Talk:Speed of light, and noticed that all the discussions from Jan 2010 were deleted instead of archived. This is a serious bug, and I am hoping you can fix it quickly, and try to restore the discussions that have vanished.Likebox (talk) 21:17, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

They appear--- I don't know how this happened--- I looked over the archive very carefully to find them, but they weren't there. It might be a server lag issue, but I can't imagine how: I also looked over the edit history of the archive and it said "archive full" for Dec 2009, omitting all discussions from Jan 2010.Likebox (talk) 21:34, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Enable for Requests for feedback

The archival bot that normally runs on the feedback page is broken. Could you enable MiszaBot for it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by MutantPlatypus (talkcontribs) 01:16, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is it broken, or is it only archiving things that are 1680 hours (70 days) old? –xenotalk 18:04, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Problem apparently resulting from page move

The bot is archiving Talk:American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 but the archives aren't linked on the talk page, and I think some posts have been archived somewhere else.

The bot's earliest appearance in the talk page history is this edit, which sent 37 threads to Talk:American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009/Archive 3. The bot is still archiving, having recently archived material to Archive 5, but no archives are linked on the talk page. Archive 4 has back and front links to Archives 3 and 5, but Archive 3 links only to Archive 4. There is no Talk:American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009/Archive 2 or Talk:American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009/Archive 1.

I suspect that this problem arose because of multiple page moves, but I couldn't find anything at Talk:American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan/Archive 1 or Talk:Economic Stimulus Act of 2009/Archive 1.

Here's what I think is needed, and if you can help with any of this, it would be great:

  • Easy. Edit Talk:American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to report the automatic archiving and link to the three archives (3, 4, and 5) now available, with provision for creating and linking to additional archives as they're created.
  • Harder. That the bot started archiving with Archive 3 suggests that there might have been some threads archived from earlier versions of the talk page, but I can't find them. Ideally, we'd find them and rename them as Archives 1 and 2. If there are no such threads, I suppose we should create empty archives so that the existing ones don't have to be renumbered.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give! JamesMLane t c 17:44, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

When the editor set up the archiving, they must have copied the settings from another page because they started with "counter=3" [1] which is why there is no 1 and 2. I've shuffled them all two places to the left. –xenotalk 18:02, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Apparently broken on my talk page again

I've got stuff 2 weeks overdue for archiving on my page. This is all that's changed on the page since the last time the bot archived, [2] any idea why its not doing its thing again?--Crossmr (talk) 10:01, 28 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

On the page as of this revision only the thread "Thanks" qualified for archival (the second one doesn't have a timestamp), but you haven't specified the minthreadstoarchive variable, which means a default value of 2. Миша13 15:52, 28 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
