The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)

edit

The Wikipedia Library gets Wikipedia editors free access to reliable sources that are behind paywalls. Because you are signed on as a medical editor, I thought you'd want to know about our most recent donation from Cochrane Collaboration.

  • Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization that conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.
  • Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account.
  • If you are still active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

Good to see your name

edit

It's good to see your name again on my watchlist. I responded to many in the RFAR, - simply look for "Tim riley" to find what should interest you! - To my knowledge, nothing like you described happened in 2013, at least nobody showed me any incidence, - I kept asking, but am happy that things got more friendly, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:59, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

infobox

edit

I am intrigued by your contribution to the infobox case. A theme rattling though my head is "some of the dispute arises because the two 'sides' aren't really in opposition, even though they think they are, and some aspects can be resolved though better information". One of the examples appears to be the desire of those supporting infoboxes to use them to deliver metadata. I've heard more than once that one can provide metadata without having to create an infobox. I'm aware of Persondata. Is this what is meant, or is there something more? I'd like to get more up to speed on the subject.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 23:46, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

(watching) One could supply metadata within the text, but so far that is a concept to dream of or to work on. Until then, the infoboxes are the next best approach,.Persondata don't help. - However, metadata is just one aspect, there's more, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:32, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Infobox controversies

edit

You are right that infobox controversies are not limited to classical music. They may be particularly noteworthy there because there is a strong anti-infobox culture who push back against the infobox pushers. A particularly ugly controversy involved Soviet Union, where the issue had to do with the successor states of the Soviet Union. There was an edit war between those who wanted to include the Baltic Republics and those who wanted to exclude them. Full page protection was imposed for one week, and there was an RFC, but that didn't end it. Eventually a modified infobox template had to be developed to identify the continuator state (Russia), the restored states, and the successor state. The basic problem is that infoboxes, by their nature, simplify, and sometimes the question is what is the "least wrong" simplification. One of the participants in the Soviet debate invented a new method of SHOUTING on talk pages, the use of markup to increase the font size, which is far more disruptive than ordinary shouting. Another of the participants was eventually identified as a sockpuppet. Infobox controversies are not limited to music. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:04, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Infoboxes ArbCom case opened

edit

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Infoboxes. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Infoboxes/Evidence. Please add your evidence by July 31, 2013, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Infoboxes/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration. For the Arbitration Committee, — ΛΧΣ21 18:00, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Good grief!

edit

I thought I had spotted your name somewhere recently, which made me hope you were back editing WP. I am delighted to see that I was not imagining it, though I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the content of your user page. Be that as it may, I am on a round-robin brain-picking mission of English-speaking music lovers, in re A Hero's Life. I posted a suggestion on the article talk page back in April to the effect that as orchestras, Grove, record companies, concert promoters and all comers refer to the piece as "Ein Heldenleben" it would make sense if WP followed suit. Since then no-one has added any comment, pro or con, and I'd be interested, if you have a few minutes, to see what you think about the suggestion. Tim riley (talk) 14:06, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Feature – Ebola articles

edit

Electron micrograph of an Ebola virus virion

During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

Just some of our over 60 translations:
New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

Help us improve wikimeets by filling in the UK Wikimeet survey!

Hello! I'm running a survey to identify the best way to notify Wikimedians about upcoming UK wikimeets (informal, in-person social meetings of Wikimedians), and to see if we can improve UK wikimeets to make them accessible and attractive to more editors and readers. All questions are optional, and it will take about 10 minutes to complete. Please fill it in at:

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

edit

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!
