Specter edit

Please see Talk: Arlen Specter#Equal Justice Act regarding what I see as the undue weight and improper referencing that this bill was given. It is not his most prominent piece of legislation or what he is known for, and so doesn't merit a separate sub-section. Also the blog speculation is not a reliable source. The Senate section does not need those subheads at present, as they were not accurate and were somewhat POV as well. PLease feel free to discuss on the talk page. Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16 edit

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum edit

Hi Mattwashdc,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

GA on Mr MacLean? edit

Matt: I've made some criticisms of the MacLean article in discussions and edits to various linked articles. Moreover, I've nominated it for deletion from the GA listing. Mr. MacLean's efforts to achieve Supreme Court review are laudable, but when so much material is devoted to his bio, and not the effort, the effort gets sidetracked. Moreover, the inaccuracies and exaggerations of the BLP detract from the effort.--S. Rich 00:15, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Mattwashdc: I'm going off on a cruise soon, so you will have a break from my volley of tags and edits. But I certainly thank you for providing a target-rich environment in the MacLean article! So I hope you will take the time to move the political material out of the BLP and into articles where they can be presented in a NPOV fashion. I will check back in August.
Also, various other articles mention MacLean as the pioneer, champion, etc. of the equal access cause. I am searching for a non-peacock/non-weasel word term which we can substitute in order to neutrally describe MacLean and his efforts. Lobbyist certainly does not work, but how about "advocate"? I invite your view. Again, thank you for your own efforts to make Norbert Basil MacLean III a worthy Wikipedia article.--S. Rich 04:06, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

DD for Mr. MacLean? edit

Mattwashdoc: The more I look at Mr. MacLean's article, the more I see that is disturbing. According to one of the citations (http://www.navytimes.com/legacy/new/0-NAVYPAPER-2153773.php), he received a Dishonorable Discharge from the Navy. This fact (if correct) is not mentioned anywhere else in any article referencing him. Moreover, given the fact that a Pardon was denied I surmise the conviction remains on the books. Your comments, please.--S. Rich 21:23, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Not correct. Chambers, Steve, "Navy Settles Dismissal Suit", Asbury Park Press, July 24, 1994. That article indicates that his DD was mitigated. It is also stated in the MacLean bio.
Mattwashdoc: Thank you for the off-line and in-article clarifications. But I still wonder -- does the mitigation mean his DD was upgraded to a General and/or was he restored in rank/grade and/or he was reimbursed for any forfeitures or loss of pay?
In any event, please be four-armed (as in four-warned) that I shall continue to peck away and hold your feats to the phire and force you to eat crow etc. as appropriate to keep get the article Wikipedia worthy. My main point remains -- that this BLP should not be used as a forum for discussing, much less promoting, legal or social issues.
Regarding the access to the references (e.g., Lexus), I see this Wikipedia policy:
Access to sources:
See also: Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange
Policy shortcuts:
WP:Access to sources
WP:SOURCEACCESS
WP:PAYWALL
Verifiability in this context means that anyone should be able to check that material in a Wikipedia article has already been published by a reliable source, as required by this policy and by No original research. The principle of verifiability implies nothing about ease of access to sources: some online sources may require payment, while some print sources may be available only in university libraries. WikiProject Resource Exchange may be able to assist in obtaining material that is not easily accessible.
With this in mind, citing pay-for-view sources sounds like a no-go for Wikipedia.
Also, Mattwashdc, kindly move the references/data out of my userspace and into the MacLean talk pages. Except for garnering barnstars and using it as a sandbox, I intend to keep my userspace fairly bear. Best regards. --S. Rich 14:07, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Mattwashdc (Matt?): Nice to see that you are back to editing MacLean. Thank you kindly for following so many of my suggestions! You are doing the right thing in this regard, and I commend you for it.
Still, I shall continue with my broadside as needed. Mr. MacLean may be personable, intelligent, likable, even lovable, but we are editing Wikipedia -- not an homage to a crusader. As you can see, I've made my own efforts to improve the article and I trust you will do the same. The new frontier of Wikipedia, and it integrity, is what should we should be striving to improve -- not the image of Norbert Basil MacLean III.
With this in mind, you can see that I've started a GA reassessment on the article. Please, please comment as you see fit.
But I see that Wikipedia has strict guidelines regarding BLPs. I quote: "We must get the article right. Be very firm about the use of high quality sources. All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.[2] Users who constantly or egregiously violate this policy may be blocked from editing."
With this guidance in mind, I urge you to look at "your" article and be prepared to either edit it properly (and quickly) or let a third party -- me -- do the necessary deletions. In the meantime, I intend to remove the GA designation fairly soon.
Next, I hope you will move the information about the "Equal Access" bills out of BLP and into a new article. (Writing a new article is a much more worthy endeavor!) Once that is done, we can delete the NBMcLIII|Equal Access etc. wikilinks which lead back to the BLP. In other words, an article on the proposed "Equal Access" bill(s) should have it own article, not one that resides within NBLcLIII's BLP.
Best regards.--S. Rich 08:09, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

MacLean Revisions edit

Mattwashdc, your recent spate of revisions is most refreshing. Thank you. And I hope you shall continue in your honorable and noble endeavor.

Personally, I think service members ought to have the access to SCOTUS. But the issue is really a machts nichts situation. We have a military that is recruited from a select population. The leaders are sworn to integrity and to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution beyond all else. The military justice system has multiple layers of due process protections. As a result, the CAAF handles what -- 50 cases a year?

Sure, errors happen. (Where don't they?) And in time we work to correct the errors both in the real world and in Wikipedia. So when it comes down to it, after Equal Access is passed, only one or two cases per decade will get SCOTUS review. With that in mind, BLP's efforts really won't change much. But a good article on EA (such as the one started off by Pmedema) can.

As for BLPs sexual status, he came into the Navy just a little too late. DADT is almost gone. With senior leaders such as Mike Mullen leading the way, the services will figure out how to handle the integration. Just as we now have women, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and other minorities serving as flag officers, LGBT service members will rise through the ranks and serve with distinction. BLP might have become one of those flag officers, only he bounced a bunch of checks. In this, he made some dishonest mistakes and he was precluded from developing his talents as a sailor, CTA, and potentially as an officer. Too bad. But this does not make him a worthy hero of the LGBT community in or out of the service. Quite the opposite.

Best regards.--S. Rich (talk) 00:24, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • SRich, the reason I got involved in the BLP is because his attempt to correct a very long inequity in our laws hit home with me. My brother was convicted of a court-martial and after he exhausted his appeals committed suicide and left behind his wife and two kids. Years later an IG report showed he was actually innocent and that the investigator messed up. Thankfully the investigator was fired. One case can make a difference to that soldier, sailor, airman or marine and to his or her family. Also just one case (if permitted to be reviewed by the Supreme Court) can have a major impact on millions of people and their lives just as the famous cases of Gideon v. Wainwright and Miranda v. Arizona have. One never gets that chance if the doors to the Supreme Court are blocked for servicemembers. I spent a fair amount of time studying MacLean's case and his cause. When you read the ROT and also the early Congressional Inquiries made by Senators Bill Bradley, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia (I obtained that information through FOIA) I don't believe MacLean intentially went out to bounce checks. It looks like someone (namely his commander) was really pissed off that he had a gay guy in his ranks and set out to get him no matter what. It's my belief, given what I have read, that had this commander kicked him out for being gay during that period of time (1992), MacLean would have become the poster boy for gay rights in the military during the Bush-Clinton-Perot campaign. If you want someone gone in the military you find a way. Evidence shows the commander tried get him out with a pysch eval at Bethesda Naval Hospital in late 1991 but that failed. After that failed the Commander demoted him and deducted his pay claiming that he failed to show up at a watch in which he was never informed he had. MacLean complained of this, and other harassment, under UCMJ article 138 and then all of sudden he has problems with his pay and checks are bounding. He then is brought up on charges. The evidence is there to show that MacLean's pay was interfered with and he wasn't being informed that checks were bouncing. NIS Special Agent Phillips testified during a hearing that someone other than MacLean was signing for bank notices and that he was not receiving them. His service record which is on file in the federal court cases shows that his overall performance average was graded as 3.9 out of a rating of the highest being 4.0 at that period of time. I, who have served, find it hard believe that a sailor who had a 3.9 record of performance over a five year period even with the court-martial conviction would throw it all away for bad checks. Does not add up. Even more so because his father was a police chief at the time. That is my personal view for what it is worth. By the way, the commander who harassed MacLean only received a slap on the wrist and was forced to retire with all his benefits at the same rank and paygrade. I guess different spanks for different ranks. The case stinks of unlawful command influence and cover-ups. And old brass covering their asses when Senators Bradley and Lautenberg with Rep Moran starting fishing around. (Mattwashdc (talk) 01:19, 25 August 2010 (UTC))Reply
If we can agree that this is not a gay rights issue, then we've made a lot of progress. That battle is about to get really interesting in terms of implementing the CinC's wishes along with Congress writing the rules & regulations. The NCOs, then, will be the real heroes when they carry out their orders, which I am sure they will efficiently and effectively (albeit, reluctantly). As for BLP, he does not have a sellable story in this regard (it is too complex and his efforts to avenge his wrongful demotion came 10 years to late), so as editors of Wikipedia we should abide by the WP rules, and drop this theme.
On the other hand, the Equal Access theme has some meat on it. BLP might be a good advocate with his blog in this regard, but each person I've shown the BLP article to has said it is over the top. For example, I never had any contact with Pmedema, but asked him to take a look because I'd seen some good work he did on military justice articles. He took some very diplomatic chops at it, for which I am grateful. The fact that you agree about puffery and images, etc. further confirms my theory.
The problem with the BLP article came about as he and others added so much puffery to it. Youngest Air Warfare badge, unit Battle E, NDSM, Cold War Certificate, images of the certificates, etc. The more people tried to make BLP likable, the less likable he and his story became. (These things could NOT make him notable!) Adding the LARD had a positive result though -- some more objective editors came by and put the BLP on a diet. If you will follow their lead, and diet/edit this article down to a concise, understandable, non-POV footnote in legal history, you will have an effective article. Work for a lean, mean, advocating machine description of what he has done without all the effort to avenge his NJP and CM etc. Be bold and chop away as Pmedema has suggested.
Once you set BLP aside as the unattractive poster boy he is, you can work on the Equal Access act of 2010 and give readers an objective, unLARDed view of what it is all about. Good luck in all of these efforts.--S. Rich (talk) 02:35, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Responding to your question, Are fire chiefs public servants? In grandpa's case, he is a true public servant in the best sense of the word by volunteering with the fire station. Otherwise, only the father is in the sense that he holds an office. In any event, thanks for the link which allows BLP to claim (puff) that he has descended from more than one public servant, thus allowing the double plurals in the section title.--S. Rich (talk) 01:40, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

RGW edit

If we look at (and heed) WP:GREATWRONGS, then the BLP becomes a very short article. From what I see and surmise, his article was originally written by him (COI) to help "avenge" the CM, and less so to promote Equal Access. But assuming that promoting Equal Access was a good faith effort and a noble one, the RGW (and LARD) features of the BLP article detract (destroy) its encyclopedic worthiness. With this in mind, proper editing of the BLP produces a very, very short background paragraph on his Navy career.

E.g., it goes something like this:

"BLP enlisted in the Navy and did well his first years. He then had conflicts with his commanding officer. Later he plead guilty to charges of writing bad checks and was discharged from the Navy. (He appealed the CM to NMCCCA, but not to the CAAF.) Some 10 years after his discharge, he learned that the CM charges were not well founded and sought to have them overturned in civilian courts. He did not succeed."

The info about him being gay gets left out because WP is about verifiability, not truth.

The stuff about bank Privacy Act violations gets left out because WP is about notability, not RGW.
The stuff about FOIA gets let out for the same reason.
The stuff about his Art. 138 complaint (and the eventual vindication he discovered years later) gets left out.
Even the denial of the presidential pardon gets left out.
The article gets pared down to some simple, notable, verifiable facts: He is an advocate of EA, doing so through some commentary, lobbying, and blogging. He is doing good things in Australia.

And then the EQ article gets expanded to achieve notability. --S. Rich (talk) 14:06, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

“Roughing It” is Mark Twain’s book about his travels in the West and Hawaii. He has one section where he describes desperate and unlucky miners (I believe in the Carson City area – I can’t remember when I read the book) who do not actually have any claims to mine or even explore. Instead, they scrounge about the tailings of the various digs, digging and looking for anything that might be a nugget or valuable ore. When, after weeks and months of futile searching, they find any such nuggets (however pitiful the sample may be), they run into town with a hoot and a holler, loudly exclaiming that they’ve “hit the mother lode!” Of course the townspeople and other miners know that their claims are a sham, because these guys are without equipment, without grub, and often without hope. But they buy the “lucky” prospector a drink and then wait for the next occasional claimant to come running into town. (Nearby Virginia City is now a tourist trap where the visitors bring Gold and Silver Visa cards to the town!)

Well, I bring up this story because this is exactly what is happening with the digging, scrounging, research, etc with Norbert Basil MacLean III O’Connor Keough. Hundreds of pages of documents are there for perusal, and some of them have tiny nuggets which give the digger hope. But this digging of the tailings from MacLean’s cases – his many, many cases – ignores the fact that the shaft is a dry hole.

Much hooting and hollering is made of the allegation/fact that Cosgriff did not like MacLean. Was it because MacLean was gay or, perhaps, because he was getting in good with Admirals and Ambassadors? Maybe he developed an attitude problem or some other personality trait that rubbed Cosgriff the wrong way. Or maybe he actually did bounce the checks in Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia. (Oh, yeah, we should mention the 16 civil and 3 criminal cases in San Diego where MacLean is a defendant?) As the saying goes -- where there’s smoke . . ..

But in the court-martial Cosgriff's prejudices (if any) do not matter. The IO found sufficient evidence (as did NCIS and the local civilian DA’s) to bring the charges. Nor does it matter whether Cosgriff’s recommendation on the CM is actually part of the record. What was Cosgriff going to say? That he did NOT recommend CM? If that were so, then he had the option (if not obligation) of NOT forwarding the case to the GCMCA. He could have given MacLean another Captain’s Mast. Again, Cosgriff (like the IO and the SJA) actually made his recommendation to the GCMCA and then the GCMCA made his decision. At some point, MacLean, who was represented by defense counsel, agreed to plead guilty. (Sitting in the brig can focus one's attention. One, maybe he contemplated several more years in the brig, or two, he was just sick of it.) In any event, we have absolutely nothing in the ROT (so I understand) that evidence went missing immediately before trial. (The stuff about the missing evidence/pay records came up in news articles, in which MacLean was the primary source.) If the evidence went missing, why then didn’t DC move for a dismissal? The UCMJ and Navy do (for the most part) follow the “beyond reasonable doubt” standard in deciding these cases, don’t they? And DC, like most other attorneys, really enjoy winning an occasional case.

Again, no. MacLean plead guilty and the military judge made an inquiry to MacLean directly as to whether he was in fact guilty. E.g., he asked questions like: “Did you write these checks?” When MacLean said yes to the judge, the judge then made the finding (along with considering the documentary evidence) that MacLean was guilty.

This issue of Cosgriff is a red-herring. The NMCCA considered the issue of unlawful command influence and rejected it. MacLean lost his case on appeal, and he must have known (with the advice of counsel) that going to COMA was not worth it. His better option was to get out of the Navy, and so he did.

The issue of whether or not the complaint of wrongs regarding the earlier demotion was discussed and resolved by the courts of appeal. Repeat: that issue was argued and decided against MacLean. He was certainly on notice that he had a complaint about Cosgriff. It did not matter to the court-martial whether the complaint was meritorious -- the issue was the bad checks. Didn’t his defense counsel consider the fact that the Art. 138 complaint was pending when DC worked on the plea bargain? Was it worth it to press for a speedy decision on the complaint so that MacLean could come into court as a PO, rather than Seaman? Maybe DC thought that having him come into court as a "former PO" was a better tactic -- "See, your honor, they've already busted my client once. He bounced checks because his pay was reduced." Again, the complaint of wrongs – meritorious or not – is another red-herring.

And so, in the long run, it just does not matter what sort of material gets into Wikipedia. MacLean's effort to have WP Right this Great Wrong seemed to be going along just fine because here was an article that supported his futile argument that he was railroaded. The article was even on the way to becoming a A rated, or even FA, until some other editor came along and said “what on earth is going on here?” At that point, reality set in and the article got the serious, critical editing that it deserved. It could no longer function as a reflection of MacLean’s “cause” or vanity. For your part, Mattwashdc, congratulations on having the insight, integrity, and courage to get off of the pile of mine tailings. --S. Rich (talk) 14:40, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

FARA edit

This is stretching things QUITE a bit, but I'm wondering if BLP would come under the FARA if he lobbied Congress on behalf of Australian interests. (I don't see any such activity so far.) But a word to the wise is worthwhile. (And this is another reason to keep the term lobbying out of the article.) See: http://www.justice.gov/criminal/fara/links/indx-act.html#611b --S. Dear User:Mattwashdc, I have observed you have been quiet as a grave since this whole fiasco began. I too request that you sign up with Wikipedia email. I desire to converse with you concerning ECF/PACER documents to prevent future unauthorised disclosures. Federal court orders are in effect requiring certain documents not be accessible to the public via ECF/PACER. Attorneys, including governmental attorneys and officers of the court, despite having ECF/PACER accounts, are not supposed to be able to access court-martial documents in my case. Thus I want to inquire to you directly on the documentation used as primary sources to support the article about me. I have already been in contact with the Clerk of Court at the federal courthouse in San Diego who is presently looking into it. Unequivocally there is a court order which states "ORDER Based upon the information provided in the above Stipulation, and good cause appearing, the 'Record of Trial in a Court-Martial Proceeding' submitted herewith on this 13th day of January 2003, shall be exempted from electronic public access, pursuant to General Order No. 514-A.3.1. IT IS SO ORDERED (Judith N. Keep, United States District Court Judge)" Thus why are exerpts from my court-martial records showing up on Wikipedia and the source cited to be PACER when these records are not available on ECF/PACER? Down under here in Australia, we have a saying approrpiate for this dilemma, "Blind Freddy could see" that this is a problem. I am not blaming you. Conceivably there may be a reasonable explanation, a problem with ECF/PACER, etc. Simply my desire is to resolve this problem as to prevent future unauthorised disclosures in order to maintain my privacy. Your anticipated cooperation and assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.(Norbert3 (talk) 04:11, 10 September 2010 (UTC))Reply

Invasion of privacy and libellous edit

I am the actual person (Norbert) whom the Norbert Basil MacLean III Wikipedia article is on. Today it has been brought to my attention the contents of the Discussion page. The Discussion page, linked to the article, contains very, very private and personal matters which are not easily known to the public (the general public cannot easily find), to include domestic violence, restraining orders, where I live, court cases which have been ordered sealed and/or expunged, criminal cases with have been expunged and sealed. How this and me are notable defies logic. User:Mattwashdc and User:Srich32977, today I have written to Wikipedia's headquarters to complain. I have never viewed myself as worthy of an encyclopedia article. Whilst there was minor coverage of my court-martial and some coverage of the bill I suggested to Representative Davis it is not law yet and I do not believe that I am or the proposal is worthy of an article either in an online encyclopedia (Wikipedia) or in a print encyclopedia. Perhaps if the law is passed by Congress and signed into law by the President it could possibly be worthy of an encyclopedia. Please take notice that I'm not the only person who has asked Congress to change the law, there are heaps of other individuals and organisations who have. Judge Walter Cox did so in a report issued in Cox Commission II in 2009. Eugene Fidell first did so in the mid 1980s when he was an attorney for the ACLU and testified before Armed Services Committees. The late Captain Kevin Barry, USCG did so in law journals. The American Bar Association did so in 2006. I am but one of heaps of individual and organisations. Earlier this year the contents of this article caused a very serious invasion of my privacy. This article should be deleted because it's not worthy of Wikipedia. There is nothing notable that I have done. Both of you please, through your little edit war, take a step back, and try putting yourself in my shoes. Much of what you are writing about took place well over a decade ago and may have received a minute or two of press. Is it encyclopedia worthy? I think not. I believe and feel that it is an invasion of my privacy and libellous. User:Mattwashdc and User:Srich32977, please do not use my personal life as a pawn for or against the pending Congressional bills because my life is not notable. I am but one citizen who is using the democratic process in order to try to effect a change. That's all. Thousands of other United States citizens do the same every year, do they deserve a Wikipedia article? I think not. (Norbert3 (talk) 04:18, 8 September 2010 (UTC))Reply

I commend BLP in his success in starting a new life! Indeed, earlier in this edit skirmish I saw an article where the hospital where he was recovering had to close and he was left without shelter or a job. He is coming along quite well. And his effort in assisting the Aussie vets of WWII is commendable as well. I, too, saw problems with the privacy issue and deleted portions of the article that provided too much personal info. And I, too, support revisions of the law in order to allow service members additional access to SCOTUS in extraordinary cases. So, through the efforts of other editors (and myself) and article discussing the pending legislation was born. And I objected to the over the top nature of this article, with its puffery, lard, trivia, selective quotations, etc. (It has been pared down considerably through my effort and the effort of Mattwashdc -- only just not enough.) And as a skeptic, I have wondered about the motivations of those who created and worked on this article -- but I could not really see what was going on between the lines, so I simply wondered. (My requests to communicate off-line went unanswered.) In any event, I support Norbert3's petition to Wikipedia administrators to remove the article. His efforts on behalf of the RSL, Keep 45 Alive, and the military justice blog should continue unimpeded by any article about him in Wikipedia. I thank Norbert3 for letting us know and I most certainly wish him well.--S. Rich (talk) 06:20, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

An exciting month of wiki events! edit

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon edit

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Speedy deletion nomination of Equal Justice for Troops blog edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Equal Justice for Troops blog requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. – S. March Madness 2017 edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Proposed deletion of Sheila Sondergard edit

The article Sheila Sondergard has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:MUSICBIO, additionally I cannot find reliable sources for many of the claims about her childhood, thereby causing BLP issues.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. xplicit 23:42, 26 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
