Hello Marek, thank you for your warm welcome and for the cookies! --Gabstef (talk) 22:25, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Dear Marek

Dear Marek

It is User : mkd07 here. Thanks for getting back to me, do you use this site sometimes, always, very rarely, or won't be using this site ever ?

Anyway if you are a permanent user then please say yes/no ? I have a question I want to write a few articles but I am still learning and don't understand why they delete articles is it because we don't provide enough information ? Anyway I am located in Australia. Nice talking to you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mkd07 (talkcontribs) 00:52, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mkd07, Thank you for your message. I suppose I'm quite a regular user and contributor to Wikipedia and am on the site quite frequently.
Regarding your question on deletion, you may find the answer on one of the following pages: speedy deletion criteria and process or proposed deletion process
I notice from your talk page that your question is likely referring to article Alexandar Turunje, which was deleted under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, or in other words did not meet Wikipedia's notability standards. You can read more about notability here. As this article has now been deleted, (and because I am not an administrator), unfortunately I am unable access the exact reasoning for this decision.
I hope this has been of some help to you. Please do not hesitate to come back, if there's anything else I can help you with. -- Marek.69 talk 01:40, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

External Link

I have been posting an external link: www.excadets.com to Cadet College Pages (only Pakistani Cadet Colleges). Its a network of Cadets from Cadet Colleges in Pakistan. I see many social network external links on various Cadet Colleges pages here. My idea is not to make any money or be a spammer, rather to inform Ex-Cadets that there is a platform after graduation from Cadet College where all the cadets can exchange information, find mates and still stay connected. I do not see fit to get warnings from wiki. Please explain !!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nabil0786 (talkcontribs) 22:18, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi -- sorry, but I think you've overdone the links, and the article has become hard to read. Have you read WP:OVERLINK? Any chance of you reverting and then maybe starting over more selectively? Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 23:07, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, that's very good of you and much appreciated. It's nice to find cooperative editors, recently I've been dealing with clueless ones who think anything goes. I've replaced a few - I didn't replace the Termini one as it was already there, and as you probably know, only one wikilink per word or phrase. Dougweller (talk) 05:07, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

cocies for a newbe, unclear topics

So, hi Marek69! I got the "coocies" from you, thanks.

The page for Prague is really nice playground where to train myself how to enhance pages. I have already found out a few tricks, but I have met a few stucks...

a) [ [cs:topic] ] is not working for me when viewing the result,

but the [ [cz:topic] ] is show correctly.
...somebody alredy corrected my edits, see the history. (see my activity, mostly Prague)
I know that this way is incorect (lang RFC) cz location, cs lang. (but cs did not show the text!)

Strangly, although I had to use cz:... in links, but it did not work for

<!--Other languages-->
[ [cz:Praha] ], I had to use the correct "[ [cs:Praha] ]"

...I recognized that it was rejected, as the text 'cz: ...' apeared on the page...

b) What for is good/usable the "Other languages" 'section'?

and the references there?
...how are these notes processed? (...on the server, client)

c) I have also noticed the 'templates' (?)

"{ {Link FA|es} }"
...what are these goog for?

d) there are also another 'templates'/'key words' I do not understand still:

 • { {portal} }
 • Refimprove
 • Reflist ...these items were generated automatically for me, counting the inline links.
 • commons
 • wiktionary
 • wikitravel ...as a list item.

Google fails on these syntactical questions. :(

Now I can see I do not understand many thing yet... I made mane preview experiments, these I cannot guess intuitively. I need advices, plz!

Bristol

Hi Marek,

With regard to your recent edit to the Twin Cities section: During the Good Article review process it was requested by the reviewer and agreed by myself (nominator) that this section should be prose rather than a list. As it is the aspiration of Wikiproject Bristol to take this article forward to become a featured article, where lists are definitely frowned upon, I would prefer to keep it that way. I am politely requesting that you revert your edit. Jezhotwells (talk) 07:51, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Jez, That's no problem. I've restored it to it's previous format. However, I've left the citation for Tbilisi, Georgia, as I think it helps.
Thanks for the message and Good Luck with the FA! :-) Marek.69 talk 10:11, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

AWB

HAs there been a policy change? I always thaught that there was no point to replace Image with File especially if no other changes are made Agathoclea (talk) 15:42, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Agathoclea, Thanks for your message. I'm not sure if there has been any policy change regarding that issue. Apparently, the Image: namespace was renamed File: a few months ago and is now deprecated. I've recently been running AWB to 'clean-up' articles. Basically minor edits like alphabetising inter-wiki links, removing excessive whitespace, fixing links to disambiguation pages and spell-checking, etc.
I thought as I was running AWB anyway, I might as well add a search/replace for Image: --> File: to the scan. Although I don't plan to do much more as it has become a little tiresome ;-) (I might just stick to spell-checking):-)

Toma T. Socolescu article - issue with text list and image

Hello Marek,
I cannot find a solution to avoid that the list I have created is too close to an image. in fact the numbers are really mixed-up with the image. Can you help please?
Here is the piece of code I get stuck with: (You can see the result here and on the published page, the behaviour is exactly the same)

 • In the Arhitectura review:
 1. Many illustrated articles on Romanian architecture.
 2. Portraits of missing architects.
 3. Travel Notes in Italy, illustrated.
 4. Plans and photographs of finished works, drawings and watercolors of old buildings in Romania.

Old house of Ploieşti as it was until the beginning of the XXth century.
 • In the Simetria review: one article on the Romanian architects who studied at the Beaux Art de Paris.
=> The list below (the numbers) do not fit correctly
=> in the page and get mixed-up with the image
=> TomaTSocolescu-Acuarela-CasaDinPloiesti.jpg
=> Surprisingly, with the same code,
=> I do not meet this issue in the French Wipkipedia
 • In the România Viitoare journal:
 1. Travel notes on Romania and Italy.
 2. Studies on some old buildings and historical monuments of Ploieşti.
 3. Literary articles on Anna de Noailles, the Countess of Noailles (Brâncoveanu), Rodin, O. Goga, etc..
 • A personal publication personal "Prin Ardeal, travel notes of an architect", illustrated.
 • In the Biblioteca Urbanistică journal, two volumes of translations with introductory studies and illustrations:
 1. "Urban planning to all".
 2. "Urban Health".

regards,

--Cbrajon (talk) 18:45, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Cbrajon,
I had a look and tried a slightly different format:
The following code:
* In the România Viitoare journal:
: 1. Travel notes on Romania and Italy.
: 2. Studies on some old buildings and historical monuments of Ploieşti.
: 3. Literary articles on Anna de Noailles, the Countess of Noailles (Brâncoveanu), Rodin, O. Goga, etc..

* A personal publication personal "Prin Ardeal, travel notes of an architect", illustrated.
* In the Biblioteca Urbanistică journal, two volumes of translations with introductory studies and illustrations:
: 1. "Urban planning to all".
: 2. "Urban Health".
gives the following result:

Old house of Ploieşti as it was until the beginning of the XXth century.
 • In the Simetria review: one article on the Romanian architects who studied at the Beaux Art de Paris.

Does this version look OK to you?
I hope this is of help.

Santiago de Chile

Hi Marek69 I have a problem, because i'm editing the article of the City of Santiago de Chile specifically in the Sister Cities that didn't exist and when I add the flag of a country it also appears the name of the country which is not needed, because the order is the City then the country and not country/city/country as appears to me.

Well thanks I hope you can help me i'm a huge fan of Wikipedia and I've been reading for years now, it was about time that I contribute to this awesome page.

Greetings! Helvetica45 (talk) 22:15, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Helvetica45

Hi Helvetica45, The sister cities section looks fine to me, it looks like you've solved the problem.
I would remove the spaces before the ‘*’ like this
Sister Cities
The city of Santiago is twinned with:

* Turkey Ankara, Turkey (2000)
* Argentina Buenos Aires, Argentina (1992)
* Ecuador Guayaquil, Ecuador
* China Hefei, People's Republic of China (2007)
* Ukraine Kiev, Ukraine (1998)
* Spain Langreo, Spain(2007)
* Spain Madrid, Spain (1991)
* USA Miami, USA
* USA Minneapolis, USA (1961)
* France Paris, France (1997, "pacto de amistad")
* China Beijing, People's Republic of China (2007)
* Spain Plasencia, Spain (2007)
* Latvia Riga, Latvia
* Brazil São Paulo, Brazil (1998)
* Mexico Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico (2008)
* Tunisia Tunisia, Tunisia (1994, "pacto de amistad")

will give:

Sister Cities

The city of Santiago is twinned with:

unless, of course, you prefer it the way it is...

Changing the title

Hi How do I change the title of an article I have written? It is called User:MelonDistrict and I want it just to be called MelonDistrict. Thanks

MelonDistrict (talk) 15:59, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi MelonDistrict, Normally you would open the MelonDistrict article, you will notice several tabs at the top, user, talk, history etc. One of these tabs is 'move', if you click on this tab and follow the instructions from there.
But as this is your User Page, I don't think you can do this in one step. First if you recreate this article in your user space, for example copying over to User:MelonDistrict/MelonDistrict, and when you are ready to move it, follow the above info.
However, before you do this, I would recommend you read this article to make sure you're article conforms to Wikipedia's policies and is not labelled as an advert. (It might need some re-writing to change the tone to more encyclopaedic language). Also some references would help the article conform to policy.
Kind Regards (and Good Luck!) Marek.69 talk 16:14, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm surprised that you don't have a tilde key on your keyboard, (mine is shift+#)- I suppose this will be different for your Catalan keyboard.

External Links on Amsterdam Page

Hello Marek69 I was away on holiday and I came back to find that Chardon has once more removed the valid link I added to the Amsterdam Page (www.underwateramsterdam.com). Once more he has cited it as spam.

I reinstated it but the whole URL isn't viewable as a link but instead a number i,e, it appears like this: [3] I imagine this is something he has done to make it like this because I followed exactly the same markup code as the URLs above.

It's immensely frustrating. What can I do about it now?

Thanks Wikiamsterdam (talk) 10:40, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi WikiAmsterdam, I've fixed the link you refer to.
If you put the url (on its own) in square brackets like so: , will give a result like this: [1]
If you add a description to this, leaving a space after the url, like so: Independent Amsterdam city and events guide, the result will be like this: Independent Amsterdam city and events guide
I hope this helps.
I can understand your frustration, unfortunately the only (sensible) thing you can do about Chardon's actions is to have a discussion and try to convince them that your site is indeed helpful and informative, and gives extra information which compliments the Wikipedia article on Amsterdam, rather than being a commercial site, trying to advertise or sell something. I wish you Good Luck with that.
It might also help if you familiarise yourself with Wikipedia policy on the matter on these pages: Wikipedia:External links & Wikipedia:Spam (to help with your argument).
I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday :-) Marek.69 talk 16:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

 • Thanks Marek. I had a nice holiday. Regarding Chardon and the link. He still keeps deleting it. When I politely asked him not to and pointed out it was spam, he just said 'Don't be silly'. I've now left a stronger message for him (on the Discussion page of the Amsterdam page) but you know what's going to happen? I will end up getting booted off Wiki as my messages getting increasingly less polite – not him. Where's the justice in that? It's also obvious he's never even visited the website in question !!! because he thinks I'm a man! --Wikiamsterdam (talk) 12:56, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Olsztyn

Hi! In the last months, only you and some IPs edited Olsztyn. This edit by an IP was overlooked by you, and got rectified by another Anon, luckily.-- Matthead Discuß 04:02, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Matthead, thanks for pointing this out. Unfortunately, I was not editing the article directly (otherwise, I might have noticed it) The article was on my list of Polish cities being auto-checked by AWB primarily for typos, which unfortunately would not pick up this sort of vandalism.
My AWB edit] (on 18th June 2009) was the only edit since the vandal (on 11th June 2009). However, I did notice the vandalism tonight though, after the IP reverted it.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 04:18, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Edits reverted

help me Dear Marek, I recently made some edits to the article about the movie "Frida." Axelsohn (I think that was the name) reverted them. I suspect that Axelsohn was the author of the article. My edits corrected several factual errors and several grammatical errors, as well as smoothing out some awkward and ambiguous wording.

So what do I do now (assuming that I don't want to leave the article as it is now, after reversion).

Thanks. Pablito (talk) 14:48, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Pablito, I had a quick look, but as I have little knowledge of the subject, I wouldn't know what is correct or not, Sorry.
The user who reverted your edits was Alansohn with this edit. Its not quite clear why. The best thing to do would be to contact Alansohn on his talk page by clicking here and starting a discussion.
Please come back if I can be of further assistance. -- Marek.69 talk 15:49, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the best thing to do is, detail your suggested edits on the article talk page, and then ask the other user, and any other interested parties to make comments. Try to reach a consensus there. This is normal procedure - a user makes changes, another user changes them back, and hopefully at that point, the first user will not add them again, otherwise it becomes an edit war. Instead, discuss. The article talk is the best place, as others can contribute to the discussion. Give references and explain why the changes are valid. And then put a note on the other users talk page, asking them to please look in on the discussion.
If you are unable to reach a consensus and agree, then ask for more opinions - see WP:DISPUTE. Hope that this helps; For more help, you can either;
 • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
 • Use a helpme - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put helpme, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
 • Talk to us live, with this or this.
Best wishes, Chzz ► 16:28, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

"Typo" in Cairo

May I ask why you made this edit? There's no "typo" and it appears your edit is in direct contradiction to the Manual of Style, which states that units should generally be spelled out in the middle of text (as opposed to parenthetically), particularly in the first instance. If there was a correction to be made, it was for "sq. km" to be written out as "square kilometers". -- tariqabjotu 07:19, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tariqabjotu,
I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware that this edit was in contradiction to the Manual of Style.
I made this edit using AutoWikiBrowser, while doing a scan for typos, so that maybe the reason that the edit summary description is not quite 100% accurate, Sorry, but I guess that's one of the pitfalls of using semi-automated bot-assisted editing. I suppose these things happen now and again.
As to why I made the edit, as this appears to be something built-in to AWB, (although I could have adjusted the settings incorrectly) I am guilty of assuming that the edit was 'correct' without double-checking the relevant policies and clicking 'save'. I suppose I should have checked. (I did previously review the ‘Non-breaking spaces’ section in Wikipedia Manual of Style and WP:MOS (dates and numbers), the check the validity of adding a hardspace , and this appeared to be in line with the policies)
As for "square kilometers" vs. "km2", I was unaware of this rule, so please excuse me (Actually, I think I've made this edit dozens of times, so apologies for this) I'll revert the edit(s) back myself if you so wish - just please let me know.

Hi Piotr, Thank you for finding this, dealing with it and letting me know.
However, I didn't ‘copy and paste (a) large swath of text into Wikipedia’, I actually copied it (within Wikipedia) from the Bukowsko article, where it had remained intact since the article was created on 12 January 2007 by user Sparspost.
I suppose I just assumed that it was OK, as it was already part of a Wikipedia article and had been for so long. I'm sorry that I didn't check this out more thoroughly.
I am aware of the Wikipedia WP:PLAGIARISM policy and did not set out in any way to break it.
I have now also removed the original text from the Bukowsko article.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 23:40, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I see - sorry about that. That's why it is often a good idea when copying such text from one article to another to note it in the edit summary, that way I would be warning Sparspost instead :) Thanks for taking care of that, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 00:35, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

typos

Hi, further to our chat at the London meet up, I'm currently working my way through a search for "prime minster" and haven't even dared look at "Government Minster". Is this the sort of thing that AWB would help automate? ϢereSpielChequers 06:26, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi WereSpielChequers, I hope you are well.
I did actually notice your typo correction on "prime minster" yesterday, when you found that particular typo in the Matteo Renzi article, (which I recently created, together with said typo!) :-)
Regarding AWB to help automate typo checking, yes AWB is ideally suited for this sort of thing and running a scan to seach for "prime minster" and replace with "prime minister" would be relatively straightforward. In fact, you could probably do "Government Minster" and a handful of others at the same time.
Not sure of how much experience you have with AWB, but if you require any assistance in setting any of it up, I would be very happy to help, just let me know (as mentioned, it's pretty easy and straightforward)

Use of AWB

Hi - I hope you don't mind me pointing this out, but I should remind you that AWB should not be used purely for insignificant or inconsequential edits (see WP:AWB#Rules of use). Converting Image: to File:, removing blank lines, etc. as you seem to be doing e.g. here and here is unnecessary as an edit by itself. Please think carefully before using AWB for these changes. Hello Marek69! Can you please fix the refrences on the United Arab Emirates article, just as you did on the Dubai article. It would be great if you could. Thanks --MoHasanie Talk 13:35, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Removal of External Link

Hi Marek,

I'd just like to query your removal of the external link to http://holidayfu.com/shanghai-destination-guide/. I appreciate that the link could easily be construed as spam, but it is to a well-written, detailed introduction to the city, with a lot of information that visitors to the Shanghai page have found useful. I have received 225 unique visitors from wikipedia since posting the link, who have spend an average of of 3 minutes and 7 seconds viewing the guide.

Please consider reposting it. I'm happy for any of the text on the guide to be copied into the wikipedia page, if the relevant eds find it useful.

Many Thanks, Iain

Hi Iain, Thank you for your message.
However, I didn't actually remove that link. It was removed on 14 July 2009 by an anon IP editor: 116.232.102.188 with this edit.
Please read Wikipedia:External links & Wikipedia:Spam for Wikipedia's policies on the subject
If you think it conforms to Wikipedia's policies, you're welcome to repost. However it may be removed by someone who does not agree...
Kind Regards (and best of luck) Marek.69 talk 13:49, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your help and the quick reply. I've readded the link, after reviewing the external links policy, and justified its inclusion on the talk page. Hope that was the right way to go about this. If you do take a look, please feel free to edit the description, as I feel like its too long, but at least makes the contents of the linked to page clear.

Would like to give Shanghai's history section a run through, as I found quite a lot of information when doing my own research that is not included here. Is there anything I should read before doing so, beyond the fundamental stuff?

Thanks again, Iain

n00n (talk) 17:51, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Iain, the links included as part of the Welcome message are useful reading, but other than that, if you wish to improve the section on Shanghai's history, then my advice would be to do it :-) Marek.69 talk 15:36, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou for your response. I'm currently working on the following article Universidad Del Pacifico - Ecuador, and I've come across a few things which I haven't figured out how to overcome.
1. I wish to upload the logos for the institution.
2. I want to add a section about the different campuses, add pictures for each campus, as well as the coordinates for each campus. In short how do I add pictures, and can I have more than one coor per wiki article?

Please respond on my talk page

Hi HarveyPrototype,
In order to upload a file, just go to Wikipedia:Upload (The link is also in the 'toolbox' section of the lefthand toolbar)
Please check the copyright of the image first, before you upload it. (See also Wikipedia:Copyrights)
With regards to the coordinates of each campus, I think you'll find the relevant information in this article Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geographical_coordinates#Parameters, subsection 'name'
I hope this helps :-) Marek.69 talk 21:45, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Marek,

Once again thankyou for your insight. I was able to upload the different locations for the University. However I'm still having trouble with the logo's and campus images.

Whenever I try to upload an image I get the following message,

 • "Unauthorized

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The action you have requested is limited to Autoconfirmed users, Administrators, Uploaders, Confirmed users.

Return to Main Page."

I can't even get to a page where I can fill out the logo template. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Logo_fur

Please advise on my talk page regards, HarveyPrototype (talk) 19:31, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi! I hope this is the right way to respond. I used to be in tech writing & developmental editing (Adobe & Intel), but almost a decade ago I developed a severe case of Adult Onset Still's Disease (an autoimmune disease that includes a daily fever that worsens with activity), so my capabilities vary.

I absolutely love Wikipedia editing because it shows how far I've come; for a while, I couldn't even read much due to weakness and pain reaching my eye muscles and hands. I kept my brain busy watching anime with subtitles to improve my Japanese.

I still get exhausted and sometimes pass out, so some days I can set aside enough energy to make an edit OR read through long help pages. I'm glad I can ask for help on those days.

Measuring distances

Hi Marek. What is it you use to calculate distances between places? I've been using the ACME Mapper as it's got quite a nice distance measuring tool. However, I noticed you changed the Bordeaux-Paris distance from 500 km to 580 km (see here). I've checked again and I still get roughly 500km, so I'm wondering if the ACME Mapper is faulty.--94.196.172.195 (talk) 06:13, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Ignore - I've now checked with Google Earth which also gives 500 km so I've simply changed it.--194.106.220.83 (talk) 11:05, 21 July 2009 (UTC) (a.k.a. 94.196.172.195)

Thanks...

Marek,

Thanks, and I will take your offer.

There is a page that is linked incorrectly, so I would like to learn to:

1) Create a page/subject (with the correct content)

2) Be able to redirect all incorrect links from wrong page to correct page.

3) Link pages through the languages link: left pane languages list. Add a new language to this list, once the translated page has been created.

4) Add the languages link-box, with the first language, when one does not exist.

This is a good start, and thanks again!

Morogoso (talk) 00:53, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Morogoso, Thanks for you're message. I'll try and help you as much as I am able.
To help me understand better, could you point out which page you are referring to?
A few answers to start
1) Creating pages: Creating a new page is easy, just click on a 'red link' and Wikipedia will automatically take you to the relevant editing page to do so, however, before you start it is a good idea to read Wikipedia:Starting an article
2) If something is linking to the wrong page, you can correct it like this link name e.g. Toledo giving this result Toledo
3) If you look at the code at the end of an article you will notice something like:
mr:टोलेडो, स्पेन
arz:توليدو, اسبانيا
nah:Toledo
nl:Toledo (Spanje)
ja:トレド
no:Toledo
oc:Toledo
nds:Toledo
pl:Toledo (Hiszpania)
pt:Toledo
ro:Toledo
ru:Толедо
simple:Toledo, Spain
sk:Toledo
sl:Toledo
sr:Толедо
fi:Toledo (Espanja)
sv:Toledo, Spanien
th:โตเลโด
tr:Toledo, İspanya
vec:Toledo
zh:托萊多 (西班牙)
These are the interwiki links or the links to the same article in different languages. Marek.69 talk 01:13, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
4) To link the new article back to the English article, the code will look like this:
en:Toledo, Spain

Marek,

Thanks for the welcome and the cookies.

How do I send/receive messages to you from my page?

Thanks again.

Dead links

Hi Marek! Thank you for repairing some dead links on Israel-related articles. I am concerned however that not all of the links are actually dead, and it appears that you are using a tool to identify them, which I guess doesn't always work. So far I just checked one link and removed the tag because the link works just fine, but please try to manually check the links after the tool "finds" them. Thanks, Ynhockey (Talk) 18:50, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi again Ynhockey!, thanks for letting me know about this. I just checked the same link which you pointed out, Ashdod has an artsy side and it gave me ‘404 Page Not Found Error′. However if you remove the comma in the url Ashdod has an artsy side to give Ashdod has an artsy side or Ashdod has an artsy side, the link works(?). Is this the same for you?
I take your point that the tool may possibly be working incorrectly (or maybe I've made a mistakes operating it?), so I will go back an check all my edits.
I have backtracking anyway to some extent, because the tool repairs links (using WayBack Machine) as well as flagging 'dead' links and I've been trying to repair the links which it flags up, as I go along
Thanks for the feedback. It's good to have these things pointed out so you can take appropriate action.
Cheers :-) Marek.69 talk 21:06, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Hi Marek! Yes, you are write about the comma. I copied and pasted the link without it and naturally it worked. Even so, I am glad that you are double-checking. Personally I don't really trust these 'automation' tools and do my Wikipedia work without them. Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 21:16, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
I agree, you can't trust 'automation' tools entirely. They sometimes throw out the odd bug, but as long as you look out for these and correct them, it should all work out.
I think theses tools have their place, and as long as they're used carefully, can prove useful in speeding up some of the more repetitive tasks of editing.
Anyway, I shall proceed with caution. Thanks again for your help. -- Marek.69 talk 22:09, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi

Hi, now i have a question: i made an article called "PODEM" which stands for 'Partija na obedineti demokrati na Makedonija' or "Party of United Macedonian Democrats". Before that I noticed that the article name of the party VMRO-DPMNE is also not written out, probably because it would be too long and the party is most commonly known by the abbreviation. That is the same case with 'PODEM', but someone moved the article to the "long form". what can i do now? is it possible to move it back to the old name? Icaf (talk) 04:18, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Icaf, It is possible to move it back to the old name. You should state your intention to do this, along with your reasoning why (more commonly known by the abbreviation), on the article's talk page. If nobody objects than go ahead and move it back. For information on how to do this, please read Help:Moving a page.
I hope this information helps. -- Marek.69 talk 13:35, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

You Offer of Help

Hi, Thank you for your offer of help. It is the most positive thing I have seen on Wikipedia so far! I am new to Wikipedia and there is a lot to learn about editing, but I guess I will master it in time. I stated a new page 'Engology' but the page appeared with the title *User: Engology*. It remained live for a few days and then became dormant. Where have I gone wrong? In addition, every edit I make, two individuals automatically delete it for no great logical reason. They seem to delete willy-nilly and seem very heavy-handed. Surely, this is not the spirit of Wikipedia?

I like your Walt Disney quotation. It sends a very positive message especially to children.

“ If you can dream it, you can do it. ” — Walt Disney (1901 – 1966)

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Engology (talkcontribs) 20:33, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Engology, thank you for the message.
If you want to move your article from User:Engology to Engology than click on the 'move' tag at the top of the User:Engology page. You can find instructions on how to proceed here.
However, before you do this, I would recommend you read Wikipedia:Notability to make sure you're article conforms to Wikipedia's policies.
Regarding, other users reverting your edits. I think the best thing to do is to enter into a discussion with said editors.
This is best done on the article talk page, and then ask the other user, and any other interested parties to make comments.
If you cannot reach consensus, you can ask for more input to build one - see WP:DISPUTE.
For more help, you can either;
 • Use a helpme - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put helpme, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
 • Talk to us live, with this or this.
I hope this helps. Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 16:54, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Rome

Hi Marek,

In the "Obeliscos de Roma" article, there is a references section ("Referencias") with a mistake in the content text. When I try to edit this section, all I see is "listref". How do I get to the text that is displayed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.171.23.73 (talk) 01:51, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks for the message. The reflist template lists all the citations in the article.
If there is a mistake which you would like to correct, make a note of the number of the number of the citation. Then trace this back to the section in the article it appears.
This is where the citation is, usually in between a .
You can read more about this in this article.
I hope this helps you. -- Marek.69 talk 02:09, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Did not get it. To "trace this back to the section in the article it appears" I clicked on the superscript number, and it took me to the References section in the same article (which is what I believe it is supposed to do), where te wrong text is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.171.23.73 (talk) 22:30, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

You need to edit in the section where you clicked (where the superscript number is) - that's where the reference will be.

Laguna Maracaibo

Marek.

How do I change the Search link. Example: When I search for "Lake of Maracaibo" I get it in the suggestions list, and when I click on it I get the article "Laguna Maracaibo" (different body of water). I want to fix this. 70.171.23.73 (talk) 22:05, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Lake of Maracaibo redirects to Laguna Maracaibo. If you wish to edit the Lake of Maracaibo, to create a new article, you can find it here.
When you edit it, you need to take out the existing line:
#REDIRECT Laguna Maracaibo
and replace it with the new article. Don't forget to explain what you are doing in the edit summary.
Also, a few lines of explanation on the talk page would help other editors understand your reasoning.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 22:30, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Marek,

There is already an article "Lake Maracaibo". Do I just copy contents, or better can we have two different redirects, "Lake of Maracaibo" and "Lake Maracaibo" point to the same articles? I guess this last option is achieved by more than one #REDIRECT statements in the one article. I did not find a #REDIRECT in the "Lake of Maracaibo" article, yet it does appear in the Search-List, and is REDIRECTED correctly. If we can have 1 rather than 2 identical articles, how do we change the name of the existing article to "Lake of Maracaibo"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Morogoso (talkcontribs) 23:05, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

OK, Lake Maracaibo and Laguna Maracaibo are two different places, with separate articles, yes?
Lake of Maracaibo is a redirect page to Laguna Maracaibo
Maracaibo Lake is also a redirect page to Laguna Maracaibo
Which ones need to be changed?
Marek.69 talk 23:16, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

"Lake of Maracaibo" should redirect to the "Lake of Maracaibo" article. "Lake Maracaibo" should redirect to the "Lake of Maracaibo" article. The current "Lake Maracaibo" article should be named "Lake of Maracaibo" Please show me how to do this. Morogoso (talk) 00:42, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Response to Deletion

Hello,

The page I deleted was just a few templates that were incorrect and should have been removed. There was nothing else on those pages. Andyjoe7and8 (talk) 03:05, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Andyjoe7and8, there was only one template on the John Parascandola talk page which you blanked and that was the WPBiography template: WPBiography
As this article is a biography of a living person, John Parascandola, I do not understand why it is incorrect or why it should be removed. Please explain. Marek.69 talk 03:24, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello,

I added the biography template as you were right to add that. However, there was another template that seemed to want to fix the article. In any event, the biography template has been put back. Andyjoe7and8 (talk) 03:34, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Andyjoe7and8, it's all part of the same WPBiography template:

which I have now restored. -- Marek.69 talk 15:07, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Andyjoe appears to have severe ownership issues with this article. I have reverted it back to a previous version that complies with WP:MOSBIO. – ukexpat (talk) 13:09, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Hi Ukexpat, I'm not too familiar with article, or it's history, I just responded to the talk page being blanked, while using ‘huggle’
I can see from the edit history that there's been a bit of ‘to-and-fro’ing. I think the problem is in part with communication. The issues need effective discussion, with references and pointers to the relevant policies which apply to this article, such as WP:MOSBIO, to achieve any progress.

Find vandalism?

Hi I am here to help and one way to help is to revert these vandals the only problem is I can't find where vandalism is done is there any Wikipedia site that reports sites that have recently been vandalized? Is there any tool I can use so I can easily spot vandalism? Other then spotting vandalism is there any way I can help?Dr. Szląchski (talk) 04:08, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Dr. Szląchski, thank you for your message,
I notice from your talk page that Cubs197 has already responded to your question.
I agree, Special:recentchanges is a good place to start. You should also familiarise yourself with the information on Wikipedia:Vandalism in order to spot what is considered vandalism, or not.
When you have got the hang of it, it's worth considering using a tool to help automate the process
A list of such tools is available on Wikipedia:Cleaning up vandalism/Tools
I personally use a combination of Twinkle and Huggle, although I've used Mike's Wiki Tool which is also a very good program.
A word of caution, however, these tools can vastly speed up your rate of vandal-fighting, but be very careful as they can also increase you rate of ‘mistakes-per-minute’ as well!
Some tools you can use straight away, some require you to have 'Rollback' permission. This can be given at the discretion of an administrator, when you have made sufficient edits to Wikipedia and they feel you are ready.
For now, my advice would be to start slowly and cautiously until you get the hang of it, then when you feel confident, consider using one of the tools.
Best of Luck. Regards Marek.69 talk 15:57, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
