Adding photos

ComputerJA, have you recorded anywhere the lessons you've learned while uploading photos. I've been watching you do that for sometimes (from afar and in total admiration)! I've seen some of your uploads deleted and others remain and reattempts made. I would like to do something similar and have my students also do this (and for the same project: Safety of Journalists), but I think it would be better if we could learn the process from somebody who has been through the process. Do you have any notes? Crtew (talk) 17:29, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Hello, Crtew. I only know how to upload non-free images of people that are deceased or disappeared without having any copyright problems. With non-free images of living people, it's up to the Wikipedia Photo Gestapo to decide. Most of them are decided on a case-by-case basis; for example, I argued that the photo of Gustavo González Castro should stay because although he is a living person, finding him would require government/police intelligence. The image managed to stay, but I haven't been so lucky with others. I'm not sure what kind of photos you plan to upload with your students, but I what do often is try to mirror the format of other users. I usually copy and past the format ( [[1] like this, for example) from other people and then just change the information to the journalist I'm writing about. My suggestion is to always look for a free image first (either on Flickr or by e-mailing the organization where a journalist is from and asking for permission--although I've never gotten a response from the latter). Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other concerns. Best, ComputerJA (talk) 20:16, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:LosZetas-logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading File:LosZetas-logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 05:11, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Torres

Hi, I'm having some problems tying text to the citations. For example, Chaires is not named in either citation 10 or 11. That seems to be in citation 13. When I look to citations 13 and 14 for allegation of drug cartel links. I don't see anything.

  • I added ref 13 behind 10 and 11 per Chaires mention. Now, in Proceso's article, is says this: "La Procuraduría investiga a cinco integrantes de la familia Pecina Chaires por el delito de privación ilegal de la libertad, ya que alguno de sus miembros mantiene vínculos con el crimen organizado." (Translation: "The Attorney investigates five family members Pecina Chaires for the crime of illegal deprivation of liberty, and that one of its members has ties to organized crime.") Original and Google translate The other US source says that the kidnapping is believed to be cartel related.

The sources all quote Cristina as saying "a couple men", yet the text says several. I just find it strange how a couple of guys can make off with a load of stuff, three hostages, and three cars.

  • Good catch on that one. Spanish sources mention "group of armed men" or simply "armed men." Should we stick with "gunmen"? If there were only two guys, then it would be impossible for them to steal 3 vehicles   Facepalm. ABC7 source mentions the three vehicles...

I've also noticed that some of the reports are agency reports, and are very similar. I also found 5, 6 and 10 are identical reports, which can be consolidated into one ref. More anon. -- Ohc ¡digame!¿que pasa? 07:52, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Having read the article and most of the sources, I would just mention some concerns I have about the notability and a possible AFD the article might face: The guy isn't notable, at best WP:BLP1E. It's like a black hole, and these things seem to happen down there almost on a daily basis. Armando's still an open investigation, and all the news seems to be about that; the news reports look pretty repetitious. There is a lot of speculation. -- Ohc ¡digame!¿que pasa? 08:33, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I thought about that, too. I contacted Torres's wife Melissa through the Facebook group and asked her if she could contact the Marines so they can release more info on his career, awards, medals, and all of that. But she told me that the authorities asked her to hold back on that information for some while. ComputerJA (talk) 08:41, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

TemplateData is here

Hey ComputerJA

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sonic the Hedgehog (1991 video game), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Akira Watanabe (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Eddie Fatu Umaga

sup man I was wondering if you can cite a source for me, the late Eddie Fatu is The Rock's cousin I noted it under his introduction where it says his two older brothers, Sam (better known as Tonga Kid and Tama) and Solofa Jr. (better known as Rikishi), are also professional wrestlers who have achieved success of their own. but was reversed by user named Brookie here is the article from CNN reporting about his death and family members The Rock is his cousin. thanks for the help. http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/12/04/umaga.eddie.fatu/index.html?_s=PM:US

  • Done, I went back and updated the article with the information you supplied and the source. Citing sources is probably the most challenging aspect of Wikipedia for newcomers; I learned by using by sandbox and toying around with sources. Since I usually only use news articles, I stick with the format on the Cite template (on the far right when you click "Edit source" on any article you'll see a "Cite" button and then a "Templates" one). Anyways, let me know if you ever need help. Cheers, ComputerJA () 17:56, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome

Hi, this is 72.177.123.145. My IP address changes from time to time. I once had an account but I gave it up. I have contributed, or tried to, for 10 years or so. The article I spent the most time on was Happy Trails, which was in sad shape until I rewrote it. I see from your user page that we may have some interests in common. I am listening a lot to Beto Quintanilla lately and I was thinking of adding a discography to his page and doing some rewriting of it. Perhaps you'll beat me to it. 72.177.123.145 (talk) 17:07, 11 July 2013 (UTC) Eric

Updating pages with Miguel Treviño Morales's arrest

Hi, JA!

Somehow, this morning, I would up on a lot of pages having to do with Mexican drug trafficking (and I started out on Germanic and Celtic tribes so it's way off my beat!) and I did some clean up, mainly involving language and grammar but also a little reorganization. There is so much content on Wikipedia on this topic so hopefully, I didn't mess up any of your work and just brushed it up a little.

I'm leaving this note though because Miguel Treviño Morales was arrested yesterday and he comes up A LOT in some of these entries. It seems like every person he worked for, with or against mentions his cartel leadership on their page. Sometimes, it was easy to note that he had been arrested but on other articles, it'll take some additional work since he is considered an active member and I don't want to just delete content that has him as a present-day leader. Since you know the field so well, I just thought I'd give you a head's up....I'm sure you know which articles will need updating.

Have a good day. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 13:46, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

  • You're totally right on that. I'll try to go article by article and see if they need any updating. But thanks so far for your interest in the subject and the concerns you wrote on the articles' talk pages. As soon as I get Z40 done, I'll go directly to address them. I think you should consider creating an account—it's easier to keep track of the articles you like and there are more benefits while editing. Happy editing, ComputerJA () 18:21, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Trevino

I have added a new comment at ITN. CNN is reporting that the arresting Mexican official refused to give Trevino's Zeta nickname or identify him as a Zeta while announcing the arrest. μηδείς (talk) 01:03, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

If you think it merited, I request you ask on ITN that the blurb be changed to "Reported Zetas leader Miguel Treviño Morales is arrested on drug, kidnapping, torture and murder charges". The current blurb contradicts what even the Mexican federal prosecutor is willing to say. μηδείς (talk) 02:46, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Date format

Then why does the Omar Treviño Morales article show different date formats? "Born January 26, 1974" yet after that it says "The authorities believe he is the successor of his brother, who was arrested on 15 July 2013." In my opinion that's not being "consistent throughout."

Also I never said one format was incorrect but admittedly didn't understand the difference between them, initially I thought it might be attributed to geographical location as I've seen quite a few articles from Europe with the format 1 January 1977 yet many in the United States with January 1, 1977. I should have done more research to know that both can be used. Daren420c (talk) 08:07, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

  • You're right on Omar's page. Since I'm used to writing dates as 24 July 2013, for example, I missed the other date on the first sentence. I don't feel strongly about the date format, either way. If you want to change them on the article, then go ahead. But I think it will be a hassle because even the sources have that format, and you'll probably have to go one by one (unless you use a Script-assisted style fixes, which some editors use, but I don't know how to use it). Thanks for your message and interest in the subject. Keep me updated. ComputerJA () 08:22, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Evaristo-ortega-zarate.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Evaristo-ortega-zarate.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. My edit of page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Social_Readaptation_Center_No._1 re: "Edgar Valdez Villarreal (known as "La Barbie") - Alleged boss of the Beltrán-Leyva Cartel"

My apologies, I'm not sure precisely where "La Barbie" fits into the DTO heirarchies in Mexico; I thought his main "claim to fame" as it were is to have been as the first US-citizen (ie. not Mx) to head a DTO / cartel and I thought he was only a leiutenant of the BLO. In other words, I think he was the boss (ie. "he went it alone" as #1 man) of his own organisation (Los Negroes?) - based in Acapulco - which was originally "overseen" by the BLO. As always, media reports are somewhat contradictory and sketchy and I may be confused by names (they all look / sound the same to me!). Perhaps using the principle of Occam's Razor and stating he was a boss of the BLO is the most correct description, someone else will know far more than me! Many Thanks, Jeremy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeezzman (talkcontribs) 20:31, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks for coming to my talkpage. Villarreal was the leader of Los Negros, the former armed wing of the BLO. Though his U.S. citizenship was widely talked about, his "claim to fame" was that he was a U.S. citizen AND a high-ranking cartel leader. The authorities know that there are many U.S. citizens working for several drug trafficking organizations IN Mexico; take the members of Barrio Azteca as an example. [2] It's the fact that Villarreal was an American and a top leader what made him "notable". I think stating that he was the leader of Los Negros, the former armed wing BLO, is the most correct description. ComputerJA () 22:14, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

It looks like the notifications of GA reviews are now being automated, which is news to me! The bot was wrong about this GA failing, probably because I didn't use the right icons in my review. My apologies if it caused you to panic. ;) At any rate, it's now on hold for a week to give you time to address my feedback. Good luck. Hi again, I just gave my two cents over at this GAC. Sorry it hasn't gone that well. Know, though, that a failed GAC isn't the end of the world; it just means that it's not ready. The important thing is that its quality is improved. I've had my share of failed GACs, but I've always been able to bounce back after going back and working on them some more. The end product is always better, and I learn a lot through the process. When you finish improving it, let me know and I'll re-review it again so you don't have to wait months again. Hi. I'm sure a lot of countries have announced their "support" to Mexico's fight against organized crime. I don't think we should include all of them, however, because the list would be exhaustive. Colombia is working on its own conflict, while Mexico is fighting their own, too. Has Colombia offered some financial aid like the U.S. did with the Merida Initiative? What kind of "actions" do you mean? We can include such info in the Mexican Drug War article. Just make sure you have reliable sources before updating the article. Re:Nice Job

Thanks. Regarding archiving, I've never noticed the problem regarding El Universal news articles dieing overnight in my five years on wiki. As for GA status, It'll be up for GAN eventually probs. Not within the next two or so months (until the Tropical Cyclone Report is released). YE Pacific Hurricane 12:14, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Mario Segura

What do you think about the viability of the Mario Segura article? I wanted to ask your opinion before we start to develop it. In short, Segura went missing in Tamaulipas in August 2012 and was later released, could no longer work as a journalist, and became a clown in Mexico City. Crtew (talk) 19:52, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Wow, I didn't know that Segura was alive. Nice job finding recent information about him. I think the article can survive; the disappearance and displacement of a director of a newspaper in a large metropolitan area within the state of Tamaulipas is definitely enough to meet Wikipedia's standards of notability. However, make sure to include details on his blog (Alerta Oportuna), and his disappearance and displacement. A good background section would definitely help too. If you encounter any problems, let me know.
BTW, do you think the article should be renamed to "Kidnapping and displacement of Mario Segura", considering that we already know for a fact that he was abducted by alleged drug traffickers, beaten, and displaced? [4] Just a thought. ComputerJA () 20:28, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, you're absolutely right about the name change. The article was started in sandbox as Mario Segura, moved to Disappearance of Mario Segura and based on new information should be migrated to the new name. Do you know of any precedents for a title like "Kidnapping and displacement ..." Crtew (talk) 16:42, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
There aren't any other articles with "Kidnapping and displacement ..." I don't think that would be a problem, however. ComputerJA () 17:37, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Could I ask you to do a verification search in Spanish on whether Mario Segura won an award. Actually, he should have because in Mexico, journalists get service awards for years of service. But I'm wondering if he received an award. If you look at the link, there is an award cited but the link was not working. Other than this, I don't have more to go on. Crtew (talk) 03:36, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

I just verified with this source that Mr. Segura did win two awards and one recognition: in 2011, the Club de Periodistas de México, A.C. Delegación Veracruz awarded him the "Defensor de la Libertad y Promotor del Progreso" and “Presea de la Libertad" awards. In 2012, he received a recognition from Universidad del Norte de Tamaulipas for his work at the newspaper. I need to archive the source so it won't die again, but webcitation.org is not currently working. ComputerJA () 15:38, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Thank you! The source that is used in awards at present looked like it was an editorial in which he says he was awarded these, but you have found the better source article for them! Perfect. If you wouldn't mind documenting that in the awards section of this article, I would appreciate it. You can just delete the weaker reference in place now for your new reference. I think this article will be ready then. It is already submitted because AfC has a backlog of 2,000 articles need review. This one is unusual as he was released. I'm wondering if he still is writing on the side? Thank you again for lending us your expertise. Crtew (talk) 16:52, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
And as a talk page stalker, can I just say, as always, how glad I am Wikipedia has you both working in this area? Thanks for all you do! -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:59, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
@Crtew, I just added the awards section and managed to archive the source. The webpage of El Sol del Sur Tampico seems to change as new updates are made, but it should be good from now on. In addition, I am not sure if he is writing in Mexico City now that he is displaced, but there isn't a source indicating he is. The Univision source states that he barely managed to find a small apartment for his family and that he is struggling to find a job.
@Khazar2, thank you for your kind words! And I stalk your page too haha. Have a good day :-) ComputerJA () 19:14, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

As you may know, VisualEditor ("Edit beta") is currently available on the English Wikipedia only for registered editors who choose to enable it. Since you have made 100 or more edits with VisualEditor this year, I want to make sure that you know that you can enable VisualEditor (if you haven't already done so) by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable". Replaceable fair use File:Rafael-Caro-Quintero.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Rafael-Caro-Quintero.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. LGA talkedits 23:37, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Assistance

Thank you for offering your assistance ComputerJA! I've spoken to User:Casullivan who is writing about Bladimir Antuna from the Durango area. We just ran her reflinks. Could you see if there are some other good Spanish articles out there for Antuna? She has some basic Spanish only but can use what she knows and Google Translate. Also it would be great if you could introduce yourself to her on her user page as she may want to ask you questions while she writes. One motivator might be to add his image, and if you want to point her in a particular direction that would be great. The notability statement is alright now at this initial starting point, but will definitely need to be tweaked some between now and the submission. She is writing this draft during this next week. Law of Mexico

So I expanded the law of Mexico article a little bit more. Maybe I (we) should have submitted it as a DYK article when you suggested it, but if someone is going to, it needs to be today. I doubt I will take the article much further in the foreseeable future, as these subjects and articles really are quite exhausting, given my approach (well cited and focused on concrete sources of law) and that most sources really focus on philosophical theory that, as an American, seem entirely disconnected from the real world. Thank you for contacting me on the issue of the Fidel Castro page. I can confirm that I certainly intend to send the article for a GAR; I have previously done the same for Nelson Mandela and Muammar Gaddafi, and I would like to see the Castro article join their rank. However, I do not think that the article is yet ready for GAR; for one, it is just too long, and second, various parts towards the end of the article are missing some important pieces of information. I have recently pulled the article on Early life of Fidel Castro up to GA, and hope to create and improve these sorts of articles before pulling up the main Castro article. I want to help make the article more accurate because like you, I have a real fascination with the illegal drug trade. It amazes me the lengths that people will go to to accomplish a goal.
