I asked Alison to look into the situation, as she had done so previously. She is a CheckUser, so it shouldn't be a problem for her to hardblock our IP. MC10 (TCGBL) 02:58, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Unblocked by J.delanoy (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA).

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing because your account is being used only for sock puppetry or meat puppetry. If you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|Your reason here}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Tiptoety talk 07:36, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Wait, didn't MC10 state that those accounts were family members?--White Shadows Your guess is as good as mine 18:15, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Please see the discussion and my comments here. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 19:11, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Tiptoety, I'm not really buying this. I see no motive for MC10 to be a sock or have operated socks. I was blocked as a sock puppet/master in a similar circumstance almost a year ago.--White Shadows Your guess is as good as mine 19:39, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

I just came back from an exhausting running race, and this is the first thing I see. Not a great surprise.
The point is, I am not ActivExpression or Madden NFL 21. We exhibit different editing patterns, have concurrent editing periods, and vary in use of words. I am not sockpuppeting; I have clearly stated what my accounts are on my userpage.
Addressing the concerns Tiptoety makes here: 1) Testing 0987130498710951 (talk · contribs) is unrelated. It exhibits completely different editing patterns. It's probably a test account created by someone unrelated. 2) We do not share editing patterns. Feel free to compare my edits with those of ActivExpression (talk · contribs) and Madden NFL 21 (talk · contribs). 3) We did not edit from the same library computer. There are many computers at the library, and different computers != different IPs; only different networks = different IPs. In fact, that is the reason why we share the same IP most of the time.
Hopefully you consider the fact that I have been a long-term constructive editor and unblock me. Cheers, MC10 (TCGBL) 02:42, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Decline reason:

There's no way someone without CU could make a determination here one way or the other. Without access to the technical data, any determination one makes would be suspect at best. Take it to arbcom. T. Canens (talk) 02:53, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

  • Maybe "public computer" was a poor choice of words on my part. I was attempting to say that you and many of the other confirmed accounts edited from the same public IP address that is allocated to a library. Additionally, I have to agree with Timotheus Canens above, ArbCom is your best venue for appeal at this stage in the game. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 03:28, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
I have sent an email to ArbCom. MC10 (TCGBL) 03:36, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Regarding Tiptoety's reply: Actually, I am pretty sure that we didn't. Only ActivExpression and myself (and possibly Jack Ebs) has edited there. I'm not sure what the CheckUser data shows, but are you sure you are not including data from our home computers? Additionally, we usually go to the library together, so an overlap of editing time periods would be expected; in addition, every person can only use one computer at a time in the library, so I do not understand why you would think the accounts are operated by me.
Also, didn't we go over this before, in October 2009? It would be appreciated if someone could review previous discussions and editing histories before blocking me, so I can continue contributing if someone unblocks me. Thanks. Cheers, MC10 (TCGBL) 20:37, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Without going into the merits or otherwise of your case, I think you really do need to await a response from ArbCom. Although it could be argued that you are a good contributor (and that is true, from what I know of you), this does not preclude you creating other accounts for unconstructive editing - we've been burnt that way before by other editors. As an admin without CU data, I can't look at the editing patterns for all the accounts listed at User talk:ActivExpression and make a judgement on whether you are an innocent caught up in the fall out from the other accounts, or if you are a guilty party just plain caught out - you are either genuinely upset at what's happening, or saying "oh damn, they've caught me - I thought that MC10 account would hide my true nature" - and from this side of the computer screen, I have no way of knowing which is the case! See what ArbCom and/or a CU with access to the data has to say. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 13:57, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
MC10, can you also e-mail me your explanation as to what has been going on? I want to help you (and I'm hoping that I'm not wrong and that you are a legit-non sock master/puppet) I have this paged watched so good luck with that e-mail to Arbcom. Remember, the last thing you wold want to do is to create another account. That will get you in BIG trouble really fast and effectively ban you. :)--White Shadows Your guess is as good as mine 00:58, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Of course I will not sockpuppet; there is no point of doing so. I will shoot you an email once I have the time to. MC10 (TCGBL) 18:37, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
@White Shadows: I have sent you an email. Check your inbox. MC10 (TCGBL) 21:57, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
To the others who think I'm sockpuppeting: Why would I waste my time sockpuppeting on Wikipedia? I am busy enough studying at school, and do not have any time to waste. This is why my activity level has decreased these few months; as school has started, I am busier with schoolwork, and do not have as much free time dedicated to editing here. Of course, if I was unblocked, I would make occasional edits here and there, but at least they would be constructive and useful. MC10 (TCGBL) 22:06, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
  • MC10, email me. Tell me what you said to ArbCom and your explanation of everything. Starting at square 1, ending at the moment you hit send. When I've got a reliable connection, I will look into all of this. I'm probably too involved to act in an admin capacity, but I can look at it with an open mind. Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

This has happened before, in 2009. I looked at the checkuser results at that time. Unless MC10 has decided to turn new (nefarious) leaf, he is telling the truth, and he is not socking. Unblocked.

Discussion you might be interested in

Hi there. User:Neutralhomer has accused me of "wheel warring" with you by my G4 deletion of Category:Wikipedian WikiElves in a discussion on my talk page, since you apparently condoned moving the members of Category:Wikipedian WikiElfs there at one point. I assume this was an honest mistake and you had no idea that Category:Wikipedian WikiElves had been previously deleted, which I tried to explain to him wasn't wheel warring, but he isn't buying it. Perhaps you would like to add your input there, as he is threatening to bring me to WP:AN/I. Thanks, VegaDark (talk) 05:18, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

November copy edit drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

Bunching?

Hi. Could you explain what was the problem you just fixed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Accessibility? I don't see any difference between the two versions.

Except that you just introduced a layout table, which is a bad practice on the web. Web designers and web developers who care about quality have been actively fighting against layout tables for almost a decade now. This layout table also slightly worsen accessibility, although it's not detrimental. So I'd really like to get an explanation. ;-) Kind regards, Dodoïste (talk) 20:28, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I was fixing the bunched-up edit links. See Wikipedia:How to fix bunched-up edit links. It's a standardized practice on Wikipedia. I an against using layout tables as well, but tables are the easiest way to fix the bunched-up edit links. MC10 (TCGBL) 20:33, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for explaining. :-) I couldn't notice the bug because I prevented it. I have a script that changes the location of the edit link, and place it right next to the header. Just like the default behavior at fr.wikipedia and de.wikipedia. Not only does it prevent this bug, it is also more usable and provide a better user experience.
Anyway, this is rather a software issue. The usability team also suggested to move the edit link next to the headers. But Brion Vibber is too scared to break a few scripts, see bugzilla:11555 and bugzilla:11270. So this issue may well linger on forever.
A local script at MediaWiki:common.js would solve the issue, just like for fr: and de:.
I strongly disagree that "tables are the easiest way to fix the bunched-up edit links". How many edits must be made, when one single edit at MediaWiki:common.js would suffice?
For these reasons, and for the fact that this change has an impact on accessibility (albeit a small one) at the accessibility project, I will revert your change. Kind regards, Dodoïste (talk) 23:10, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm perfectly fine with you reverting my change. However, IMO, the location of the edit links for pages is fine as is. I would prefer edit links in the current position than right next to the header. But that's a personal opinion, and I'll respect you to your opinion. Cheers, MC10 (TCGBL) 01:41, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, that's because you're used to it. But for users who are not familiar to Wikipedia, it is noticeably more intuitive. One of the usability rules is to have related things near each other (to be identified as one single group). Things that are significantly separated are far from each other. This usability rule comes from psychological research, one so renown Wikipedia has an article about it: Gestalt psychology#Prägnanz.
Which means that is the edit button is at the opposite place from the header, it is not related to it. That's the first feeling of the user anyway, the user is unconscious of it most of the times. So he has to think a little, and deduce that albeit being separated these two elements are indeed related.
This understanding may happen really quickly for some users. But for others, it will take quite some time. This issue is one small barrier in the walls that prevents users from editing Wikipedia. But it's also by fixing a large number of small issues that you can achieve high usability. Kind regards, Dodoïste (talk) 17:54, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
