Battle of Olde Towne

I want some advice. I've just done a stub about James Wilkinson's 1791 raid on the Miami town of Kenapacomaqua, which is called "Olde Towne" by local folks in Cass County, Indiana. A 1913 history of Cass County uses the less archaic term "Old Town." After I discovered that, I tried a page move to the redirect Battle of Old Town, but because of a previous editing error (my own), the move was blocked because the page has an edit history. Rather than list this as a "requested move," I'm thinking of moving the article to Battle of Kenapacomaqua, a redirect without an edit history. Do you think that would be justified? Wilkinson's account doesn't use the names "0ld Town" or "Olde Towne." Those are later Anglo-American localisms. Wilkinson himself used the French name "l'Anguille" for the town. Other contemporary accounts mention variants of the name "Kenapacomaqua." Except to those who became casualties or captives, this was a minor skirmish. It never had an official name. Do you think I would be stepping outside the protocols of Wikipedia to name it the "Battle of Kenapacomaqua?" -- Cuppysfriend (talk) 19:08, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Good work on creating that stub. "Battle of Kenapacomaqua" is fine for a name. "Battle of Old Town" is also good, since it has been used in print before, but because there are other obscure raids and battles at Indian "old towns" that were later called the "Battle of Old Town" by locals (like in 1779 at Chillicothe), that may eventually need to be a disambiguation page (none of the other "old town" battles have articles yet, I think). Until then, I'd say go ahead and rename to "Battle of Kenapacomaqua", and keep both Old(e) Town(e) variants as redirects. —Kevin Myers 02:31, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Population history of American indigenous peoples GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "World History-Americas" articles. I have reviewed Population history of American indigenous peoples and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. James John Floyd

He is the namesake for the county according to the State of Indiana Library, the source should be already on the article. It had been a long debate over on the Talk:Davis Floyd page between me and another main contributor of that article, it initially drew my interest when had list him as the name sake and then I started finding references for them both. We agreed that the namesake came from this immediate Floyd family and it's debated between John and Davis Floyd. So the inclusion of them both is listed until we can get something factual that occourred from the date of formation and naming of the county. Until then both names should be included with James John being the most likely due to his recognition from the State. The other editor I've talked to has petitioned a source from the State Library of the namesake and is awaiting a reply. -Jahnx (talk) 08:38, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Siege of Yorktown

I'm glad you're working on that article -- it needs help. I don't know the literature on Yorktown very well. Lengel is good. Ketchum's Victory at Yorktown is supposedly a good recent popular history. I'd use Ferling's Almost a Miracle too. The old standard is Johnston, The Yorktown Campaign, which is on Google Books, which I'd use for comparison with newer sources. Biographies of Cornwallis and other major figures might be good, like Gottschalk, Lafayette and the Close of the American Revolution, which is an older one. Crawford Route

Hello again, Ed. If you click on the first map in the Crawford expedition article, you'll find a list of sources I used to make the map. All of those sources were consulted, but mostly the map comes from two of the articles by Parker Brown: "Accuracy of the Knight Narrative" has the detailed map of the villages around Half King's Town, while "Battle of Sandusky" has the overall map, drawn originally by CW Butterfield. For details of the journey, the book by Butterfield is valuable for detail, as is the narrative by John Rose. The Atlas by HH Tanner is indispensable for locating Native towns in the Ohio Valley. I haven't read any of these for a couple of years now, so more details are not fresh in my mind. Hope that helps, and feel free to ask for more. Cheers! --Kevin

You'd shown it as fairly well north of Gnadenhutten, perhaps even at Bolivar? I'm asking because I'm wondering if the route crossed any of Carroll County east of . According to Butterfield (pp. 136-37) , they dipped just south of Carroll County, and crossed the river at about New Philadelphia. Butterfield's book is now online. It would be nice is someone created a map showing every camp site on the expedition, but I've never seen one. Hope that helps! --Kevin
