Moved thread from my Talk page following my policy stated at top of the page.

In case you didn't know, 82.43.* has a reputation on the RD. He only chimes in on discussions to disagree. It appears that he doesn't care what the topic is - he just wants to disagree. I believe that he wants to get people to read his post and notice that he doesn't sign his posts. Then, when someone asks him to sign his posts, he tries to get them to argue with him about it as long as possible. It is a rather pathetic and juvenile game he plays. in response to comment on my talk page...I wasn't aware of the litany of problems surrounding taking it somewhere else, so for discussion of what to do, I have nothing more to contribute; I was wrong there. For what to do, I'd say ignore it. Part 2 of the chain relies on someone rising to the bait. If anyone ignorant of this responds, you could remove their response and explain on their talk page. This is just what I'd do if it was my decision; my opinion is not strong enough to defend it. I realise this would need the support of the other contributors, and I doubt you'd get it. I laughed so hard, I spilt soda all over the couch. Dove versus Pidgeons

Thank you for the message. I'll remove my comment. The Carrier Pidgeon, the passenger pidgeon was systematically destroyed because they might be used as message carriers in the WW11. Before the flocks of them took 3 hours to clear a point!

Policy on User Talk pages

Kainaw, I read your reply on the Help Desk with interest. I have been concerned that a certain user I have communicated with appears to just delete comments they don't like from their own talk page; but I couldn't find anything in Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#User talk pages which even advised against this. There is a tiny bit more info at WP:BLANKING. However, it notes that the users shouldn't remove important notices. Removing comments from other users is considered a response of "I read and understand that". The history of the page reveals anything the user is attempting to hide, so there is no policy against it. If the user is a problem and has been warned, providing diffs to deleted talk page content is enough to show that the user has been warned in the past. If there is a problem and the user has deleted past warnings, other users will certainly frown upon the deletion of the warnings - making things worse for the user. -- kainaw™ 12:19, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello there Kainaw. I thought I should clear the air a bit.

I don't think of my goal here as to make rude demands for references. I have not, in fact, singled you out in this regard, nor do I think I've even done it that many times to you. I do not, actually, think I've done it very often to anyone. I have no interest in "policing" and this is one of the reasons I stopped editing the main Wiki as a whole anyway. But anyway, when I ask for references, it is indeed because I don't think you're right, and that you're presenting an opinion as a fact.

You mentioned in your talk complaint that you had been feeling me looking over your shoulder and had added "disclaimers" to indicate that your speculation was, indeed, speculation. I have to admit that I think this is a good idea generally. We should not, on the Ref Desk, pass speculation or opinion off as fact where we can help it.

Lord knows I don't expect everyone to add full citations for everything. I don't do that myself, and I don't support the occasional proposals that every Ref Desk answer have a citation or anything like that. But I do think that we should take care to make sure our answers reflect when we are just speculating or logically working things out for ourselves. I do that constantly in my own answers — speculations as clearly marked as such, with "it seems to me" or "I would guess" or other phrases along those lines that makes it pretty clear to all involved when I am reaching out of my immediate ken.

Surely you don't find the above to be too objectionable, in theory anyway. Of course nobody wants other people literally hovering over everything they write, and I wouldn't like it either. I'm not actually doing that for you. If it seems like it, it is probably just a coincidence, or related to the fact that you posted things I was very dubious about on topics that I happened to read the questions for. Anyway, I am not trying to cause you discomfort. But if I do think that something you say is probably wrong but has the appearance of being factual, I will probably point that out. I do not think that is necessarily a rude thing to do — I think, rather, it is a pretty regular thing on the Reference Desk and pretty core to our mission.

I apologize as well for getting a little snippy regarding the database question the other day. I did feel you were giving a lot of bad information with a little good information mixed into it. I think you gave what for you seemed like a clever answer with lots of possibilities. But I really did not (and do not) think that it was necessarily appropriate for a novice database programmer and would set them on the wrong path. So I tried to make it very clear what I thought was the "standard" approach to the question, and you objected that you had referenced it in your longer post, and I probably made the wrong assumption about the tone of voice that I thought you were using. No answers yet on Firefox problem

I could ask them to check for spyware or malware, but I know they haven't done anything to cause the problem. It is not grouping or anything else. The taskbar is the windows XP type. But no one at that library knows what the problem was. I posted some more information about it where I posted earlier, to provide clues in hopes someone will figure it out. This problem is identical to the "non-problem" of having an "intelligent" taskbar running. It is standard use in public locations. It looks like a standard taskbar, but behaves differently. I see no reason to assume that anything else is going on. -- kainaw™ 18:51, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Because well over 90% of all computer problems are user error, until I have a computer sitting in front of me that I can check (or at least a screenshot showing the actual computer error), I assume it is user error. I have no reason to assume that task hiding isn't on purpose. It's not doing it now, and I guarantee you 90 percent of what I've reported on the reference desk wasn't "user error". Yahoo, for example, confessed that they designed their email system incorrectly. I got on the computer about 30 minutes ago. It was the first time it had been turned on all day, but the Internet was already up and I just typed in the site I wanted to go to. The Internet was very, very slow. The button on the taskbar eventually disappeared but the window was still there. The site required me to select a sponsor before I could continue. The sponsor's ad came up as a popup (but very slowly to begin with, with just the blue border and the name of the site, the minimize button, the maximize button, and the red X at the top), with the toolbar so I could type in a new address. At that point, the taskbar button for the popup ad appeared, and so did the button for where I had been, but on the right instead of the left, which would be normal. It is a huge mistake to assume that the taskbar items have an order. Left, right, middle, etc... No order should be assumed. Also, if the computer was being used by someone else, how do you know what was running? What if it had 100 instances of Word running, all minimized? If it is the first time the computer had been turned on, how did it magically log in and launch Internet Explorer? How can the speed of the Internet be judged by how long it takes to load one magical website that always appears to cause problems, but you never seem willing to divulge which website it is? Well, it just quit. It said "Firefox is sorry" but they didn't tell me how I could get a copy of this report that will be sent. And it destroyed the stuff I had saved. Oh, sure, they act like they're doing me a great big favor by restoring the session. But the email is GONE.

Hi, I noticed your reply on the Language desk about c and g and front vowels; please always assume good faith. The English Wikipedia is the biggest, and usually serves as the international Wikipedia, particularly on the language desk. Pet hair vacuum

Hi Kainaw,

If memory serves, you asked a couple of times on the RD about pet hair solutions. I can now recommend this handheld vacuum for this purpose. In my situation there's one relatively small area of the house where I have to get the hair off of two couches, and this corded unit reaches both of them fine. Performance is quite good and it really does suck up almost all the dog hair; it's a powerful little vacuum (presumably more so than any cordless unit). reference desk

Hello, i have a few things regarding the reference desk for you to understand.

• if i was able to contact the people via twitter or any other sight, then, i woulden't be here. it so happens that i can't. I tried creating a twitter account, but it says that my e-mail is taken, and my server won't let me create one anyway.
• second of all, don't ever give me such crap as "do it yourself" again. Why would i be asking at the ref desk if i could do it myself.
• Don't just assume i know how to do something, or something is possible for me. I hate it when people make assumtions about me without confirming them.
