Patriot Act addition

See the talk page for the Patriot Act. The section you added has been added and removed many times. Currently, it is removed while being discussed on the talk page. The majority appear to feel that it should not be in the article because it has very little in common with the Patriot Act. A minority feels that the Patriot Act is Bush's ticket to follow Hitler and become a war-mongering dictator. Problems with a WikiTable

Here's the issue, though. Both James French Patton need to be placed in Seat 3 for the year 1882. That is why I had originally expanded the year 1882 to rowspan=4. It was required in order to place both names within the same year at the same seat. I have reverted user:mphamilton/Sandbox if you have any further suggestions. Thank you again. I don't know how you think a "q" is supposed to sound. Can you explain what you mean using the International Phonetic Alphabet? To me the realizations of the j's in Jiang Jieshi^ⓘ sound more or less as I would expect from the phonetic description of the phoneme: an unaspirated "ch"-like sound.  --Lambiam^Talk 09:53, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

The difference between "j" and "q" is merely how much air you blow out while pronouncing them. It sounds practicly the same if you aren't used to listening to the difference. Personally, I'm always told that my q's sound too much like j's. So, I avoid speaking Chinese as much as possible. I stick to reading and writing. Vess' question does bring up an anomoly that I asked about a while back. The "i" in "shi" is pronounced by the Chinese I work with as "shr", not "shi". I asked why the "i" has two sounds. I don't "know him" in the sense that the phrase implies. I saw him at family reunions, but he is a lot older than I am. So, he hung out with different cousins and such. I am positive that if I were to attempt to contact him, he wouldn't respond in any way. I know a lot of his (aunts, uncles, grandparents...) much more than I know him - and they have far more interesting stories. For example, at his great-grandmother's funeral, his grandmother was talking about how disappointed she was that Bradley only sent some flowers (as opposed to showing up). Then, feeling she was saying bad things about him, she tried to correct herself by saying, "I just love little Bradley to death. The 'problem with the people here'

Hey, I'd appreciate it if you didn't lump everyone together on the Ref Desk, as you've done with Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science#Burning sensation in throat. I'm not responding over there because I think there's been more than enough meta-discussion, but there's some background that you may not be familiar with.

I'm the person who did the analysis of questions on the Ref Desk a few months ago that looked at the issue of medical advice on the Desk. (We were attempting to get a handle on the size and nature of the problem.) I took a week's worth of questions, and extracted all the questions related to medicine for analysis. Of the twenty-one questions that could be read as relating to medicine, I would say that only three or four actually clearly sought medical advice (two or three more were in a gray area). So I'm not just people here and I'm certainly not making the assumption that any medical question is a medical advice request and must be met with "GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!". I also played a substantial role in developing the Ref Desk medical advice primer. It's designed to assist people in determining if a question sought medical advice and to help to avoid exactly the sort of paranoia that you're railing against.

I note that the particular question you replied to already had a few responses by the time that I got to it. Without fail, all of those responses had offered diagnoses for the original poster's condition, offering up 'acid reflux', 'dehydration', and a reaction to 'exhaust fumes'.

I'm a bit surprised by your Every wall in every waiting room is covered in pamphlets about every symptom you could imagine comment. In my experience, the pamphlets tend to be about specific disorders or specific treatments; while I cannot say that they don't exist, I don't recall seeing pamplets that encourage self-diagnosis. In any event, a waiting room is a bit of a different situation—the individual in question has clearly already chosen to seek professional medical advice at that point. Our hypothetical patient is already surrounded by medical professionals, and he's about to have an appointment with a physician.

Incidentally, please don't pull out the "I work in a hospital" line when you're not directly involved in patient care, diagnosis, or treatment. I work in a hospital too, and I'm also on the research side—I don't see patients until they're safely formalin fixed and presented to me on a slide. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 12:26, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

It appears to me that you read a lot into my comment that I did not say. I do not disagree with you. My point was that there are people here who want to remove encyclopedic discussion of medical issues as well as medical advice. For example, if I were ask if anyone has the latest AMA recommendations for BP control in diabetic patients, I'd surely get a "GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!" reply. Many pages in wikipedia are set to block access from the user-agents of most popular programming languages. This is to stop automated vandal accounts. You can avoid this by customising the user agent of your program. Almost all frameworks allow this. I had this problem with my bot several days ago. USA PATRIOT Act

Heya, I want to start fixing the main USA PATRIOT Act article. I was thinking of doing this in the following way:

1. Create a background section. I'd just modify something I did in an earlier draft at Talk:USA PATRIOT Act/History#Background.
2. Create a history section. I'm starting off a draft at User:Ta bu shi da yu/USA PATRIOT Act/History summary.
3. Summarise each title of the Patriot Act. I have already documented each of the titles, except Title X.
4. Write about how controversial it was, neutrally, of course :-)

What do you think?

I'll check your drafts. For the "controversy" area, I've considered, but haven't really asked for, a section that covers false controversy. For example, some idiot in a blog claims the Patriot Act was used to do an armed raid on an elementary school. It turns out to be false, but is used by others to sway opinion against the act. Use of "tm"

Kainaw, I notice that you use a TM (trademark) symbol in your signature (see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Computing#Running_PHP_in_a_browser_without_installing_a_server). You may not be aware that if you have not paid the USPTO money to register a trademark, it is not legal for you to use that symbol. The purpose of the symbol is to warn others that they may not use the symbol themselves because it is legally registered with the USPTO. Hope this helps. David 10:53, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

I responded to Nricardo's comment on my talk page. To say that the use of TM doesn't require eventual registration would be incorrect. Yes, I am assuming that "Kainaw" is not actually a trademark of Kainaw, Inc. Most people don't use their name as their company name, although that is perfectly fine, of course. But, that is irrelevant, since "Kainaw" is being used in Wikipedia entries as a person's name, not a company's name. The use of "TM" in this context is cute, but incorrect and arguably illegal. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. USA PATRIOT Act

I forgot to mention that I read it. It is still so long. I don't know how to easily break it down further. My instinct is to have the main article only cover the bare facts: Who, What, When, Where, Why. Then, push all the controversy stuff to other articles. Viruses during colder seasons

From a previous discussion you mentioned that cold and flu is more common during the winter because of children being in close proximity to each other. This article mentions that hypothesis, and also rebuttles it

As for the crowding argument, McCullers said, "That never made sense." People work all year round and crowd into buses and subways and planes no matter what the season."

You may remember, I also made the same argument that people crowd into buses and subways no matter the seasons.

Thanks. I saw that study submitted to the AMA for peer review a couple months ago. It should be under review by now. I would like to see how it looks after review. However, I really wish newspapers wouldn't publish papers as factual before they go to review - especially when the claim previous peer-reviewed research to be wrong. As Dr. McCullers claimed, most major epidemics are traced to children - usually to schools. Why not adults? Adults wash their hands more often and have less physical contact with fewer people than children. I believe that I explained it well. The question was not a request for medical advice. The personal experience appended before the question confuses some people into thinking that the question is a request for medical advice. No matter what is written before (or after) the question, if the question itself is not a request for medical advice it is not a request for medical advice.
