Uploading images

The file has to exist on your computer first. If you create it yourself, or download it from your own camera, those are the pictures Wikipedia likes best. You CANNOT use just any picture from the web. The vast majority of pictures out there on the web (especially of bands) are copyrighted, and if you upload them they will only be nominated for deletion.

HOWEVER, because we are writing educational articles, we have a legitimate claim to fair use for album covers, book covers, DVD covers, and so on. These (and only these) pictures can be copied from another source (like allmusic.com or amazon.com.)

(I'm going to give step-by-step instructions as if you haven't used a computer before, since I don't know how much you do or don't know. Please ignore if you already know this shtuff, k?) Find a good quality picture of an album cover somewhere on the web. Right-click on it, and choose "Save File As..." or "Save Picture As..." from the pop-up menu. Save the file somewhere easy-to-find on your computer (Desktop, My Pictures, whatever). Give it a specific name such as "Soundgarden_HuntedDown_SingleCover.jpg" -- this makes it easier for people to know what they're looking at in a list of files later.

Click the "Upload file" link (should be in the "toolbox" on the sidebar at the left), which will take you to Special:Upload. Click the "Browse..." or "Find..." button there, select the image on your hard drive, and click OK. Fill in the "Summary" field -- describe what it is ("cover of Hunted Down single by Soundgarden"), where you got it ("image from http://www.amazon.com/whateverblahblahblah.html"), and add the template {{albumcover}}, which will put the appropriate fair use copyright tag in. Check the "I affirm..." box, and click "Upload".

Now go edit the article where you want the picture to go, and put in the image tag [[Image:Soundgarden_HuntedDown_SingleCover.jpg|225 px|Hunted Down]] (or whatever you named it). Note the pipe character (vertical line) in there -- the "|"? That goes between the name of the image (the ".jpg" part) and the size of the image (225 pixels is usual for album & single covers). Then another pipe character goes between the size and the caption text. This text will show up as a caption if the image is put in a frame, or in a tooltip if you hover the mouse over the image.

Yeah, that picture is fine to use under fair use rules -- just remember that fair use only applies to things like album covers, not to every picture on the web. Soundgarden updates

You're really doing some nice things with these articles. The template looks good, although a little large. I'll let you keep working on it for now, once you're satisfied I may see if I can find a more compact way to organize the entries.

Can I ask where the pictures on the Soundgarden and Chris Cornell articles came from? As I said above, we probably can't use them here -- the copyrights belong to someone else. See Wikipedia:Copyrights and Wikipedia:Image use policy.

We can use [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] or [6], however, since they were issued as press release/promo photos -- use the tag {{promophoto}}. (I know, it's a stupid and fuzzy line -- just trust me, the others will probably get deleted, these shouldn't.)

Adminship

For now, if you want to become an admin, I would just concentrate on getting more good edits done, and becoming familiar with Wikipedia policies and styles. Do that, and I'll be happy to nominate you myself, explaining how I feel you've grown from someone who started with "vandalism" into a very good contributor.

You'll become eligible for adminship when you've had about three months of active editing, and about 1000 edits. You first started here November of last year, but a lot of that was experimenting; I would say that most people would count your active contributions starting from June, so you can be nominated at the beginning of September. According to the Edit Count tool, you have 73 edits to articles so far. Do a little bit of work every day, or every couple of days, and "about 1000" will be here before you know it. Edit anything that interests you (bands, cars, TV shows, subjects you study at school, anything) -- you can even hit "Random page" and see if there's anything you can add or any spelling errors you can fix or links you can make. Not every random page is interesting to me (so I just hit the link again), but I still learn a lot of fun things that way.

Be nice to others -- working well with strangers is the key to being a good admin. Stay calm even if you disagree with a change they made to an article you're working on: just explain on the talk page what you think is right, and ask why they made the change they did, and you'll be able to find a way to make the article work for both of you.

Become familiar with Policies and guidelines -- read the "Key Policies" section, and follow the links under "Other policies and guidelines". Read the parts of manual of style that interest you -- nobody perfectly follows every style rule, but you need to at least be familiar with them. Follow the links at Administrators' reading list. The Community Portal is also a good place to find links to different pages that explain how we do things. (It's a lot of reading, and probably too many rules, LOL; don't worry, there's no test, but you'll be doing yourself a big favor if you read this stuff a little bit at a time over the next few months.) Ask questions if something doesn't make sense to you.

Don't submit any more copyright violations (text copied from other websites, or images we can't use) -- this will really hurt your chances of approval. Understanding copyright issues is tricky, but VERY important to being an admin.

People voting at Requests for adminship will examine your user contributions (click the "My contributions" link at the top of the page if you want to see what they'll be looking at), they'll want to see: enough edits, that you're familiar with Wikipedia rules, and that you're calm and nice even when disagreeing with others. They'll also be looking for a useful Edit summary for the majority of your edits (read that page for details) -- it helps people at RfA understand what you're doing and that you take your editing seriously.

Adminship again

Be patient, Jobe. Most people who vote on Requests for adminship won't even consider you until you have 1000 edits, and some want to see more than that. Re-read my reply above, and keep reading Wikipedia policy pages.

The best way to get people to know you is simply to participate. Most of your efforts should go toward working on articles, since that's what we're here for. However, you can also get to know other users by participating in some of the behind-the-scenes work. I'd suggest helping with the Wikipedia:Collaboration of the week, and voting regularly on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates -- and remember, don't just vote, but explain your reasons, this is what helps people get to know and trust you. It might also do you good to watch Wikipedia:Copyright problems too, and start participating in discussions there as you start to understand the process. Wikipedia:Votes for deletion is another place to get to know others, but don't get sucked into that as the only place you participate -- there's so much going on there that it would be easy to do nothing but watch that page all day, but it's much more important to work in the article space.

By the way, can you tell me why you want to be an admin? Do you understand that it does not give you power over other users? It is, essentially, a janitor's job -- it just gives you a few extra tools to help you clean up the place.  :) — Catherine\^talk 9 July 2005 01:28 (UTC)

Remember the OGG file you uploaded at 19:33, 3 July 2005 (UTC)? You know, an exact copy of the entire recording of "Queen Of Winter Throned" from Cradle of Filth's Live Bait For The Dead album. When I heard it, it seemed that you copyied it directly from the CD. Whether it was some sort of test or not, it was a blatant copyvio of a copyrighted song. Regarding the deletion of 'Weeman the fisherman'

I thought that I would just inform you that: the original author of the article removed the {{delete}} tag you had placed there; I had put it up at 'Votes for deletion' as it seems to be better classifed as a hoax than patent nonsense, and after the original author had removed the {{delete}} tag, I thought it suitable to tag it with a {{subst:vfd}} in accordance with Vfd procedure. Lol...I'd start on the alto sax. It may be harder switching from a brass instrument to a woodwind than going from scratch as I had done. Basically it's getting used to the buttons, and the mouthpiece [ugh...the troubles I had with getting used to trumpet mouthpieces.] Otherwise it's probably as easy to learn as any other basic wind instrument (basic in my mind as opposed to doube-reeded instruments or absolutely weird/exotic instruments). — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 04:15, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

While admittedly they melded metal into their sound as well, there is little doubt that Nirvana is punk. I knew Nirvana was punk the first time I heard it. If not punk, then what? "Grunge"? That's a bogus term. Metal? There is more to the story than that, for sure. "Alternative", - that term is way too ambiguous. Nirvana was prominently featured in the recent documentary "Punk: Attitude". I am actually puzzled that one might think that this music is *not* punk, and believe me, I know my punk. Since you seem to specialize in Soundgarden, (who were more metal than anything), perhaps you are defending the term "grunge" as an actual artistic movement, in the simillar vein as punk? I don't care what Kurt said while he was headed downhill, he was probably a complete wreck at the time, you can't go by that or some booklet in a compliation album. I know punk when I hear it, and I am very confident of this assertion. Listen to "Breed", or "Negative Creep" and tell me this is not punk. Perhaps you did not realize that you actually like punk rock music?

PS - Google for the phrase Nirvana + punk returns 756,000 hits - I am quite certain that they are not all saying "Nirvana is not punk". Take a look!

Wikipedia:Wikiproject Albums/Needs infobox conversion

Well, I'm glad you like the idea. I noticed that while a lot of old mainstream/important bands have boxes... they are of the old style and should be updated. Uniformity is good for this... plus, I find it more difficult to add elements to the old style... One misgiving I have is that I think templates take more effort from the server... even though they are easier than using subst: to paste the raw code. I just saw Their_Satanic_Majesties_Request... is that what you mean? for US vs UK versions and the like? I'm not sure what is proper... I recommend asking on the album project page. G3: Live in Concert concert is an anomaly... if you look at the album-project page I think it more or less says that you don't need to add anything but main albums to chronology... like, I don't think we're supposed to add every single, live, and greatest hit even though some have them... if you add a "subst:" before the template name it will paste code and then all you have to do is copy the chronology code to right below the chronology code and change the necessary stuff. I would ask at the album-project page if you haven't... they'd probably be able to answer what is best. I'd personally use I<!-- template in here --> and then subst: it and modify it with the the new chronology... therefore you have a complete version of the template with one chronology saved in case they ever change style again. gren グレン 13:42, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

That IP is not blocked. I need the actual number from the block message (should look like "#12345"). Also please check your computer for open proxies, it doesn't look like you are using a shared IP address. It's not his fault, you were blocked again because your buddy (who has the same IP address as you) kept trying to come back to Wikipedia. There's not much that anyone can do about this, it's sort of a bug with Wikipedia's autoblocker feature. It's not Golbez's fault. I recommend that you stop sharing your Internet connection with your friend, or if you control the router, you could block his computer from visiting Wikipedia.
