Revert

Hi there,

I was working on updating on updating my schools page and you undid all the extra information I put in. The page hasn't been updated in years and needed new statistical information, club list updates, and athletic descriptions. All information and pages were citied and linked for clarity, especially when they came directly from the school. The hope would be that students in each specific group would update their groups pages as I am only familiar with a few.

Thanks.

Hi there MJWB and welcome to Wikipedia. The content you added violated Wikipedia's very strict copyright rules and was unambiguously promotional. Please understand that no one owns this page and you do not have a right to dictate what is written on it. Us volunteer editors often resent that paid or conflict of interest editors write non-neutrally, displaying obvious bias toward themselves or their clients, and write promotionally. A neutral point of view is one of the five pillars of Wikipedia, and is non-negotiable. All of your edits (besides being copyvios) fails these rules. The encyclopedia is here for knowledge, it isn't here to be used as a personal website.HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 20:46, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Re: Openpoultrystandards

I strongly support a speedy re-name - but I suspect your user rights dont allow you to do so? JarrahTree 03:07, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

JarrahTree, correct they don't. I also doubt their reasoning since if they were adding content specifically regarding Open poultry standards and if you google it, the first hit is the page they were editing. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 03:19, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
If another admin disagrees, I won't object to it. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 03:22, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Alice D. Snyder

On 8 October 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alice D. Snyder, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that professor of English Alice D. Snyder helped lead the campaign that earned women in New York the right to vote? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alice D. Snyder. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Alice D. Snyder), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Tom Renney

Do you have time to look at Tom Renney? A bunch of citations were recently removed. I don't have time right now to look into newer citations. Also, the user which removed them appears to be new. Could you leave a welcome message? Thanks. Flibirigit (talk) 18:19, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the improvements. Flibirigit (talk) 21:09, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Anne L. Stevens

Hello! Your submission of Anne L. Stevens at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. To consider reducing the protection in the redirect Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum to only semi-protected in MelanieN's name here. Have a nice day! --NikkeKatski [Elite] (talk) 13:41, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Please could you rev-del or whatever that editor's various edits...their edit summaries are just disgusting. Shearonink (talk) 23:42, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

@Shearonink:, zzuuzz got it. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:43, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Sometimes better when people don't use the rollback button which just repeats the same text ;) I wish I could ban people for doing that, not you obviously. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:47, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Noted, thanks  . HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:56, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you, I read those edits & kind of had to rinse out my braincase with bleach afterwards...((shudder)). Shearonink (talk) 00:03, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

John Roxburgh (politician)

John Roxburgh (politician) is finally complete. Can I take a vacation now? :-) Flibirigit (talk) 19:09, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

Wow, fantastic job. You definitely deserve a vacation! My family has the bright idea of going to Winnipeg in January to see the Leafs play..still technically a vacation. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 19:40, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
I highly recommend visiting the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. I have been there myself. Any DYK suggestions for Roxburgh? Flibirigit (talk) 22:21, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
Flibirigit, DYK....that turkey breeder and orchardist John Roxburgh organized the Ontario Juvenile Hockey Association and served as president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association?
DYK...that besides serving as president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, John Roxburgh was also a Liberal Party of Canada member of the House of Commons of Canada?
Thanks, I am also going to consider introducing a bill to have hockey declared as Canada's national game. Flibirigit (talk) 00:50, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Could you help at Template:Did you know nominations/Jack Roxburgh? Thanks. Flibirigit (talk) 15:04, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Wrong linking

Can you help me? Marc Newson page contains a link to Magis, that should be an Italian design industry. But the link takes to the page of a religious association. I'm not very keen on English version of Wikipedia, I tried to create a Magis' page but I was reported and the page deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IBOSIO (talkcontribs) 12:50, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello

Hello! I'm wondering if you can lend an admin eye to the editor Howareyoutheyus (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)? they seem to be WP:NOTHERE, as they are only interested in the page for Pierre Kiandjan. Normally I would not ask an admin directly for help on such matters, but they insists on wasting the time of others at the AFD and at the article talkpage, where a discussion is going on about why they redirected their user page to the article. In my experience those are all the components of autobiography promotion, but who knows. In short: they are trolling and wasting time while promoting their sole interest. Thank you! ThatMontrealIP (talk) 18:29, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Scratch that request. A couple of your colleagues blocked them. Thank you! ThatMontrealIP (talk) 20:45, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

Hi - while patrolling just now, I noticed that you had tagged the userpage of Ismail doubabe for CSD U5. I'm not questioning the tag - it's obviously totally appropriate - I'm wondering though whether you'd mind discussing how you decide whether to tag, or simply delete for yourself. For obvious reasons I'm eager to get up speed on what the accepted norms and practices are! From my reading of WP:DP#Speedy_deletion, admins are able to delete such material on sight; I don't see anything at WP:UP#DELETE modifying that. Would you be willing to let me know your take on this, just to inform my own thinking? Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 17:36, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi Girth Summit and thanks for stopping by  . One of the concerns in my RfA was that I would be trigger happy with the block or protection buttons. As a result, I am trying to listen to concerns and take precautions. Therefore, I like to tag and not delete just as a precaution. It is just a personal preference. Although we (yes, I am including you in this since you’re going to pass without any doubt) are allowed to use our discretion I just like to err on the side of caution. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 17:44, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
HickoryOughtShirt?4, OK, thanks - that makes sense. I've just been doing quite a bit of reading over the last couple of days, then I saw your tag and thought "Uh-oh, what have I missed?" Thanks for the vote of confidence too! I've got to say the whole thing is going a lot more smoothly than I could have hoped for (touch wood...). Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 17:48, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Why User Page Flobbadob Deleted re. Code U5?

Dear HickoryOughtShirt?4 I don't understand why you have deleted my user page re. a code U5. I was not aware there was anything on it that was inappropriate - just a few scant snippets of information about myself. I haven't actually visited the page for some time and I was wondering whether someone else had vandalised it in my absence by adding material of a kind forbidden on wikipedia and that was what prompted your adding of a 'speedy deletion' tag and carrying out said deletion...er...speedily. I try to be a law-abiding wikipedian and no one has ever complained about my user page before. Can you please explain what, if anything, I've done wrong, how to put it right ( if I have ) and how to reinstate my page. This is all both incomprehensible and distressing. Flobbadob (talk) 01:01, 23 October 2019 (UTC)Flobbadob

Hi Flobbadob and welcome to Wikipedia. I apologize, I did not mean to distress you. A good guideline to follow would be WP:UPYES. Your userpage had "Writings, information, discussions, and activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals" and included "Personal information". Both of these are listed at what not to have on your userpage. I apologize for the stress this has caused you. Take a look at my userpage and others for an idea of what it should look it. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:12, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Dear HickoryOughtShirt?4 Thank you for replying so promptly to my query. I have looked at your user page and also the guidelines re. what to put in and what to leave out. I am, however still a little puzzled as to why you deleted my page so very swiftly : if you had left a warning message on my talk page as to specific content to which you objected / Wikipedia objects, I could have taken action to bring it into line, by deleting anything deemed inappropriate. As it is, I presume that I now have to write a new user page from scratch, and I'm worried that that might have unforeseen consequences e.g. make it appear that I'm a complete newbie, when, in fact, I've had an automated message congratulating me on my 10,000th edit ( your 'welcome to Wikipedia' is a little belated...) The guidelines seem to allow for a little personal information. Could I reinstate my page from History - in the way one can recover ordinary deleted edits - and then knock it into shape ? If my page was so bad, why have you been the first to tag it for deletion ? I've been around on Wikipedia for quite some time - seven years, I think, starting with a lot of work on the page for genus Desfontainia, if I'm remembering rightly. I'm a self-taught Wikipedian who has contributed a lot of esoteric information to pages on many subjects e.g. Georgian Mythology, the Sijou Plant and Iranian Musical Instruments, to name but a few. Much as I've loved - and continue to love - editing, I've not received an awful lot of praise or encouragement and have several times encountered less-than-helpful behaviour; however I've always tried to remain helpful and constructive. yours in continuing concern and perplexity Flobbadob (talk) 09:03, 23 October 2019 (UTC)Flobbadob

Carol Leonnig edits

Hello, I am new to wiki editing. I wonder if I did something wrong in updating Carol Leonnig's site? It looks like you removed my edits. I am still learning so if you are able to help me with the changes, I would be very grateful. Thank you. MHKelley (talk) 20:24, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi MHKelley and welcome to Wikipedia. Can I ask if you have any connection to Leonnig? The edits you made removed a large portion of the article and decreased its readability and content. I suggest making suggestions on Talk:Carol D. Leonnig before making huge changes as you did. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 20:35, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your prompt response. I am so new that I didn't notice a message about the conflict of interest (under a bell on the top of the screen). Carol is my sister-in-law. I will be sure to disclose that COI on the Leonnig talk page. She has now won three Pulitzers and much of the other wiki history is super old. It sounds like I should post the needed changes to the talk page, will someone else update for me? Is that how it works? Thanks. MHKelley (talk) 20:43, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi MHKelley and thanks for the response and disclosure. Don't worry, we were all new once. Yes, if you follow WP:Edit requests (and include sources) it should be updated. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 20:45, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

One more quick question. The instructions on the link you sent me say to "Propose a specific change on a talk page." Is that what I did in my conversation with you? Or is this a different step? Thank you -- will try not to try your patience too much in this process. MHKelley (talk) 21:10, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi MHKelley, don't be afraid to ask me questions because that's how we learn. You are kind of correct. What you need to post on the page is things such as "Under [paragraph] please add "[content]" and here is the source." Or things like "Please add header "[such-and-such]" above personal life and "[content]". Here is the sources." The sources should be from third parties (see WP:RS). Please make sure you disclose your conflict of interest on your user page (the red link where your signature is). HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 21:14, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi -- I went to a create a user page, but can't find a red line where the signature is to declare my conflict. Here is a snip of what I am looking at, can you see this file I am sending?

File:Create a User Page

I will continue to work on this tomorrow, finding it incredibly complex -- was much easier doing the editing! I appreciate your help and all you are doing to support Wikipedia. Thank you. MHKelley (talk) 22:12, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi MHKelley. I have added the declaration for you. I know this seems complex and scary but it is really the only way the community feels comfortable with COI editing. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 22:46, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for getting me up to speed and properly identified in terms of the COI declaration. I think it makes good sense and appreciate the help. I hope to take some of the online courses in the next few days so that I can work to update sites using the correct and proper process. Wish I had done learning that first. Thank you. Gilbert Laporte

Please do not reverse the edits to Gilbert Laporte's page. I am a colleague of his at HEC Montréal, he personally asked to do those edits. Some are a matter of Pr. Laporte's personal preference, some are clear errors in dates or names of distinctions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jemendozag (talkcontribs) 01:10, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi Jemendozag and welcome to Wikipedia. Not only were the additions you made unsourced, you are in violation of our conflict of interest policies. I want to be very clear here that no one owns the page and you (nor Laporte) have a right to dictate what is written on it. In saying this, your best bet would be to walk away. Us volunteer editors often resent that paid or conflict of interest editors write non-neutrally, displaying obvious bias toward themselves or their clients, and write promotionally. A neutral point of view is one of the five pillars of Wikipedia, and is non-negotiable. The encyclopedia is here for knowledge, it isn't here to be used as a personal website. Secondly, you must declare your conflict of interest on your user page (followWP:DISCLOSE) and use WP:Edit Requests on the articles talk page. This is the only way the community is comfortable with COI editing. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:32, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

You do not need to be agressive. I think it is pretty obvious that I did not know these policies or the right process to edit pages (or ask for editions). If those are the rules, that is perfectly fine, they make perfect sense. Let me then just kindly ask you to correct the facts that you got wrong. After all, "the encyclopedia is here for knowledge". Pr. Laporte is not an officer (OC) of the order of Canada, he is a member (CM). He received that award on December 27, 2018 and not on January 2019 as you innacurately wrote. You can check both facts on the official announcement: https://www.gg.ca/en/media/news/2018/governor-general-announces-103-new-appointments-order-canada. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jemendozag (talkcontribs) 02:14, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Jemendozag, I didn't mean to come off aggressive, I wanted to make sure everything was understood. Thank you for pointing out the error. The article was published in January so that explains that. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 02:18, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello HickoryOughtShirt?4, I am new on English Wikipedia and I am not very experienced. I noticed that the Magis link on Marc Newson's page takes to a religious association and not to the right page, that does not actually exist. I tried to create it, but it has been deleted. Is it possible to resolve the problem? It seems I can't do it by myself. THank you so much — Preceding unsigned comment added by IBOSIO (talkcontribs) 13:53, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi IBOSIO and welcome to Wikipedia. The reason your edits were reverted were because you tried to take over an existing page. If you think Magis passes our WP:Notability criteria, you can write it out in the WP:Sandbox. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 18:27, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
