Fair use of images

Hi Elie! Thank you so much for inviting me to ask you questions. I am writing an article about a contemporary Lebanese artist and would like to illustrate it with pictures of her artworks. I was wondering whether it was permissible to use images I find online if the copyright holder gives permission, or if not how to proceed. Hi Fmrt2018, this is thorny let me explain a couple of things so you can consult with the copyright owner:

Wikipedia does not accept non-free images for which permission is required for reuse, or that do not permit derivative works to be created. This is because Wikipedia's mission is to provide free content only. The Wikimedia Foundation reserves the right to remove non-free copyrighted content at any time. therefore:

1. You may want to ask the artist if they are willing to release the work under an appropriate Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-SA) or a CC BY-SA-compatible license (dual-licensing under a GFDL license is also possible). See Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission for a sample form letter. See example of an artwork released by the owner himself under CC BY SA 3.0. Explain to the copyright owner the deed found here. They will have to allow the artwork to be shared and adapted freely under certain conditions listed in the license. If the copyright holder agrees to release the image under a free license such as the GFDL, please forward that letter to "permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org" if it is not apparent from the source URL of the image (website). This ensures that the Wikipedia Foundation has a record of the license in case questions should arise at a later time. Go to this page once you meet all the above and fill up the required fields. Indicate in the summary: (1)The original source of the image, including the copyright holder's name and, if applicable, the URL where you downloaded the image. (2) A statement about the license status of the image (What license is it released under?)
2. The artwork may be posted under Template:Non-free 2D art. This tag is for NON-FREE 2-D works of art used for critical commentary on the work in question. This implies that, if your article is about the artist, you may not use this tag to post an image of the artwork; however, if you dedicate a section of the article to the artwork in question, you may use the non free 2d art tag. However this is not recommended as the use of the artwork in the article may be challenged. This tag also implies that a low resolution or a small section of the artwork be used.
3. the last option is to have the owner release the work to the public domain and waiver all copyrights.For the purposes of Wikipedia, a "free license" means one that permits anyone to reuse the image for any reason, including commercial purposes.

Hi Fmrt2018, this is done also through a letter as described above IF the author of the work in question is not on wikipedia. If the author has a user account they may upload the file themselves and use this template on the description of the work in the upload page to waive all rights. This is not the best option for artists IMO. PS Always limit the number of released artwork as much as possible. I believe, according to thr Lebanese copyright law (accessible on the misitry of economy website), a public exhibition is any exhibition where thr audience exceeds thr number of a large a family or so... Anyway. I found the text ""Performance of work" means the execution of a work through exhibition, playing music, reciting, narrating,

acting, dancing or any other means whether directly or through any means or device. "Public performance" means a performance which is given in a place or places where the number of persons present exceeds the members of one family and their direct acquaintances." and "15. The copyright holder shall have the exclusive right to exploit the work commercially and, accordingly, shall have the right to authorize or prohibit the following: - any copying, printing, recording and reproduction of the work in any manner or form including photography, cinematography, sound or visual recordings of any kind or any other form; - any translation, adaptation, alteration, transformation, summarizing, reworking of the work or rearrangement of the music; - the sale, distribution or rental of the work; - the importation of copies of the work manufactured abroad; - the public performance of the work; - communication to the public of the work by wire or wireless means, whether through hertzian waves or the like or through coded or uncoded satellites, including the rebroadcast of normal television or radio broadcasts or satellite transmissions by any means of diffusion of sounds and images."
