Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.

  Technical news

  • Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants,   The Rambling Man and   Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being   Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are   Gog the Mild,   Lee Vilenski,   BennyOnTheLoose,   Amakuru and   Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles.   Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Norman Duke Editing Question(s)/Feedback

Hello, Ealdgyth! Sorry for reaching out to you via Discord, I was completely unaware that accounts had Talk pages! As I said, I was just asking if I could get some feedback on the kinds of images I should use for articles. I saw that you deleted mine for being an imaginary non-contemporary image. I’d like to note that Robert the Magnificent uses a statue from the same place as the one I used. If I shouldn’t use statues at all, can I use ones like Duke Rollo’s image? Thanks! TheREALSlavicElmo (talk) 19:05, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

The problem with those images is that they are made hundreds of years after the death of the person they are supposed to represent. In that situation, they are what the sculptor/artist imagines they looked like, and they are misleading to the reader. One thing about wikipedia - just because some other article does something doesn't mean that it should be done elsewhere. Just because someone hasn't removed that image in Robert's article doesn't mean we should add ones like it to others (I don't happen to have Robert's article watchlisted, thus I don't edit it and don't notice changes there. As for Rollo - note that the sculptures aren't the first image in the infobox, instead they are further down the page. General readers think that the image in the infobox is supposed to be an accurate representation of the person - that's what we do with more modern people, so having an "artist's rendering" in that spot is more misleading than putting a modern image further down the page. Ealdgyth (talk) 19:36, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for your response! I get what you mean. About Rollo, I was talking about the manuscript art he has, not his sculpture. I know where those manuscripts come from (here) so I was wondering if I could get a picture of William Longsword’s illustration and place it there. Use of {{Flagicon}}

I appreciate your edit here, whereby you removed {{Flagicon}}s per MOS:FLAGICON. Since I've put such icons in many family tree articles already, can you please give me some guidance as to how they can/can't be used in such family trees. The MOS was vague on this. Thanks! —GoldRingChip 16:25, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

My opinion is that FLAGICON is pretty clear - they shouldn't be used, as they aren't very helpful. They are also a bit anachronistic when used in medieval biographies - as they weren't in common use in the period. Ealdgyth (talk) 17:32, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
You'd cited MOS:FLAGICON as the reason for your edit, so I was trying to find that reference. Yes, however, I agree that flags are anachronistic in medieval biographies. As a whole, I dislike their overuse. I find them only helpful in certain rare situations, such as family trees of monarchs, to distinugish their monarchies, etc. —GoldRingChip 20:27, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
Why use a flag there when the prose is already stating "king of England". If you MUST use a little blob of pixels, wouldn't a crown be better as that would actually indicate monarchial status? But it's undue to single out the monarchs with little decorations vs. the others that don't get the same decoration - why do the queens not get little flags? It just gives undue prominence to one aspect, which the whole of MOS:ICON argues against. Ealdgyth (talk) 20:56, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
I get what you're saying. The reason I distinguish them, and maybe you'd think it is arbitrary, is to give reigning monarchs, not consorts, some sort of distinction. That way the reader can see the flow of succession, which is helpful in a family tree. When queens reign (such as the current Queen of the United Kingdom), then they are also singled out. But if we'd rather not use little decorations or a little blob of pixels, then I've chosen to highlight the surrounding box with color or thickness. I also think it might be helpful to have something also to distinguish foreign monarchs. After all, the family tree box on this article we're discussing is, "Richard's relationship with the rulers of Western Europe." Therefore it might be helpful to the reader to see who these rulers are. I'm not sold on this whole idea of using flags or whatever, but I want to find a way to help the readers without giving undue emphasis to flags, anachronistic ideas of nation-states, or monarchs over other people. I appreciate, therefore, your help here. —GoldRingChip 01:39, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.

Thanks

...for the work you've put in as a FAC coordinator. I was thinking that "Thanks to Ealdgyth" comments would follow the new coordinators section, so I held off, but now people have started I don't want to seem grumpy nor do I want to start a trend of people adding to their own posts in case someone thinks they didn't appreciate you!
