NZ Performance Car TV

Hi Richard, I've added quite a few references to confirm information in NZ Performance Car TV. Unfortunately for users to see viewer information requires an expensive subscription to Nielsen, otherwise I could put the TARPs and other more detailed rating information. Other information was obtained directly from Parkside Media. Can you please review this and let me know if you think it requires more. If not, please remove the unreferenced box. Thanks. Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I traded the CSD for an AfD instead. I've had a history with reverts on this page, and it has a tendency to come back from the deletion netherworld. Not trying to step on your toes. Best regards. --OliverTwisted (Talk) 10:44, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

No problem. I think there should be an article on the orchestra but I think it needs to be written by uninvolved editors and all the probable copyvio material expunged from history. dramatic (talk) 22:11, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey there, after watching a program on the History Channel recently, I created a new article for Phil Lamason. I was surprised it didn't already exist. Given your interest in NZ topics, I thought you may be in a better postion/location to research and add more relevant information, but only if you are interested. NZ Horses

I did put a lot of stubs for Australian horses about two years ago. These have mostly been extended. At the time, there was not even an article for Tulloch, which is a NZ Hall of Fame horse and an inaugural Hall of Fame Horse for Australia! We have to start somewhere. I did start up a lot of the NZ horse articles, plus the racetracks. People have extended these a lot. Wallie (talk) 05:42, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Charlie Hunter

I guess that we could put in the stub I had initially, plus a small piece from the referenced material. Would that be OK? Wallie (talk) 05:42, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

I have done it. Thanks. Wallie (talk) 06:23, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia Rules

I agree with you over copyright. That was careless on my part - as you say, working too fast. As far as stubs/original research is concerned, this is sometimes important. For example, with the Il Tempo (horse) article, I put it up based on information I personally knew, as I was at all the major races he won. Someone else put some more details in as listed notes - probably original research too. However, I know that this is like gold, and was 100 percent true. Another person, presumably from Japan put up some info about a Japanese horse smashing the world record over a similar distance. I checked it out, and referenced it more - also absolute gold. The article is now being discussed in racing blogs etc. Wallie (talk) 06:02, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

NZ books

I note that you have removed the books section from some of the Year in New Zealand articles. Rather than not having the section at all would it not be better to list the notable books (i.e. books with a WP article)? Book publication is at least as important as films, music, TV programmes etc which are listed. Cheers. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 03:04, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

I have no problems with the award winners (we need to add awards like the Esther Glen medal, too). But if there is a selective list where the crriterion is "that we have an article on it", then we would be better to link to a category. (I have no idea whether the Category folks would consider Category:Books published in New Zealand in 2005 to be overcategorisation or not. The other option would be a list article. I think films are different, given that a year with as many as 10 films is rare. I wouldn't want to see every Television series listed either, especially with the plethora of reality stuff. dramatic (talk) 03:11, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
To avoid a clutter of info but to give balance to the Year in New Zealand articles we should at least have notable or selected (prone to being subjective) books etc. Another solution perhaps is to have XXXX in New Zealand literature articles that list the books. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 03:23, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I agree that books which have won a major national or international award should be listed in the year in New Zealand articles (but there are a very large number of awards, so we need to agree on which ones are considered major), and there are certain books which were hugely influential, such as The Hollow Men, Encyclopaedia of New Zealand and Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, which I think are worth listing even though the first two of these didn't get an award as far as I know. It might be worthwhile copying this conversation to the New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board to get further feedback.-gadfium 03:40, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Why are you so negative? I can really do without this sort of criticism. (It is much easier to destroy than create.) Thank you. Wallie (talk) 09:51, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

For example, this horse doesn't have references: Flashing Red. However, everyone knows that it is notable, as it has raced recently. I am trying to put up missing horses which should be there. Wallie (talk) 10:00, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Also, this one. Christian Cullen (horse) It IS referenced. Have you actually looked at the reference? Wallie (talk) 10:07, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

I am quite annoyed about this, as people like yourself are going around trying to delete articles THEY think are not notable. Now that is destructive! You mentioned the horse Indianapolis. It was probably not notable as far as you were concerned. However it did win a lot of major horse races. It raced at about the same time as Phar Lap and won nearly as much money. I think you will agree that Phar Lap was notable. Wallie (talk) 10:07, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

OK. I will go through the list and make sure there is a reason why they are notable to stop the (nearly automatic) deletion. I will start on Denis Nyhan. I guess if he won x number of major races, that would qualify him as being notable. I have updated many of the horses now, like Highland Fling (horse). Have a look at the extra I put in. Is that sufficient? I will also do the same for all horses in these big races, esp the Auckland and NZ cups, so they pass these criteria. Wallie (talk) 10:52, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

William Collins (sportsman, born 1853)

Thanks for the "and politician"; I agree that that was an important omission. I'm not so sure about whether his being an MLC was (as your edit summary put it) "probably considered more important than [his] sporting achievements", though, given that he played rugby at international level. Now I'm wondering whether something like William Collins (sportsman and politician) might have been a better title. His peripatetic status (born in India, played rugby for England, MLC in New Zealand) makes using nationality as a disambiguator rather cumbersome, but I don't know whether there are any other William Collinses who've been both sportsman and politician. As I said in a slightly exasperated edit summary of my own, I wish cricketers would have less common names! Loganberry (Talk) 00:41, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Re: Dunedin suburbs

You're right about the references, of course. Problem is that a lot of these articles are (gasp...) straight out of my head (yeah, I know, "O.R."). They do need references, and the info in them can, should, and will be found - but that explains why there aren't that many references in a lot of them. I have gone through and added references to several of them (e.g., South Dunedin), but in most cases the referencing will have to wait until the info's down. Grutness...wha? 07:00, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

re: Heading Levels

Hey Dramatic. #113 was broken to start with; #125 is an error I will work to fix. Yes, there are rules about hierarchy: namely, that accessibility is important, and according to my reading of the manual of style this is established there too. I do not think that un-dated is given undue weight (I quite like it), and therein lies the crux of the issue - this is primarily a personal style argument. Some years had already been fixed by human editors, arguably showing they did not think the weight was "totally excessive". A separate bot-task or AWB-task could make the word "undated" plain text, if consensus was established for that. For the moment at least, every other country I can find has "undated" as a level 3 header (UK, Canada, etc). - Jarry1250 (t, c) 12:08, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Actually, #125 was already broken as well, because the bot assumes that if you got one heading right, you would have got them all right. In this case Horse racing was fine, but Golf was wrong - a rare occurrence, surely? - Jarry1250 (t, c) 12:26, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Answering here for that specific instance: The 19th century pages were all started by a different person using a different template (all h4) from the 20th century ones (mostly h3). For most of the sports I would go though each year for a particular competition, so (until I realised what was happening while doing soccer) whichever format was used first was getting applied to the lot. Also, the majority of the 210 articles in the series don't use "undated" at all - they just rely on it being self-evident. dramatic (talk) 08:15, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
As discussion about the topic (you are not the only one to raise concerns) is getting fragmented, I have opened an RFC on the matter here. All comments appreciated. Cheers, - Jarry1250 (t, c) 14:41, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm also concerned about whether a bot should be making these kinds of style edits. Please see Headline hierarchies at the Village Pump, which is the nearest we have to a centralized discussion. (The Village Pump discussion was started by Jarry1250 himself, but now he's started a new discussion in his own userspace (see his message above). I don't like taking part in multiple discussions on the same subject so I haven't yet posted to his latest one.) --Kleinzach 05:15, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/LivingBot 11. The bot was approved on 29 May. I assume you were not informed. --Kleinzach 01:44, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: Tangi Utikere

Copied from Wikipedia:Administrator review/SoWhy
  • This is but a single incident, but I think there was a little hastiness/laziness in twice declining Tangi Utikere for speedy. The first time you said that he may be notable, but did you actually do any of the checks you suggested? I think that in A7 cases there is a duty for the admin to do a basic check in case there is clear notability which the article has merely failed to state. Then I came along - I read the article and found no claim to notability> I searched and found numerous mentions of him in non-notable local roles (clearly a person active in the community but nothing to base an article on, and the fact it was an unreferenced autobiography should have counted against it further). I did not think to check the article history, but when I did afterwards and realised a speedy had already been declined I supported my reasoning on the talk page. The second decline comes across as a procedural one purely on the basis that you had already declined it without any consideration that research had been done and that a second editor thought the article was a clear-cut speedy. dramatic (talk) 19:37, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
    • This is not a problem of my administrative conduct, I'd say, but with different opinions on what CSD patrolling admins should do. Unfortunately, while you might think so (for good reasons maybe even), it's not an admin's duty to check for whether the subject of an article is notable or not. The article in question made several claims of importance/significance (like being on the board of the notable New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, being advisor to a minister, etc. - remember, importance or significance is a much lower standard than notability) combined with several Google News hits indicating that there is in fact coverage of the subject in reliable sources. Whether those claims or the coverage are sufficient to establish notability is a question that can and should be decided using PROD or AFD deletion venues and which speedy deletion admins can and should not make (review the wording of A7 that explicitly states that sources to back such claims are not essential to decline an A7). So yes, it's quite possible that you are in fact convinced that the article was a clear-cut speedy, the same way that I was convinced, that it isn't. The second decline was procedural because nothing has changed from the first one and thus my reasoning from the first time still applied imho. On a side note, you should always check the article's history before tagging it for speedy deletion as it's always possible that the speedy has been decline before. Regards SoWhy 22:58, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Christchurch - Lyttelton motorway article

Hi Dramatic. I've just read your article on the Christchurch - Lyttelton motorway. Are you aware that there is a typo in the title? (The town is Lyttelton, not Lyttleton). I don't know how to shift articles, otherwise I'd try doing it myself. Otherwise, have you thought of calling it New Zealand State Highway 74 instead? That seems to be the naming convention used for articles about New Zealand highways. Lastly, I might be able to scrounge up a very early photo of the tunnel; my father has been cataloguing all his old slides, and I've just sent him an email asking if he's willing to donate the photo to Wikipedia. Daveosaurus (talk) 09:22, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Whoops - thanks. I didn't notice because I created the article by clicking a redlink on the New Zealand motorways nav template. I will move the page and correct the template. FYI so long as you are logged in, there is a "move" link for most articles. I've used an alternative Wikipedia skin for ages now so I won't try and explain where it is on the standard skin :-). I think there is still scope for an article on the Highway, since the highway and the motorway are no longer one and the same. dramatic (talk) 22:51, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
No worries. I'm still very much at the "clueless n00b" stage of working on Wikipedia so didn't want to barge on ahead and (most probably) completely foul something up. Daveosaurus (talk) 00:38, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: File:New Zealand transmission grid.svg

Re the message you left on my talk page: The dot in the eastern Bay of Plenty is not for Opotiki or Tauranga - it's for Kawerau. This is mainly for the Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill, which is the second largest industrial electricity user after Tiwai. Combined with local residential and commercial demand, the Kawerau grid exit point (GXP) can draw up to 200 MW during peak demand.

Thanks for asking. Lcmortensen (mailbox) 22:04, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I double-checked the original map - it shows the Kawerau point closer to Rotorua, but it is still around the size of Wellington's dot. The map is on the 2009 planning report for Transpower, but I don't know how old it is. As for Taranaki, the original map had the generation dot on New Plymouth, with the load dot to the west. I changed the map around a bit to reflect Stratford and New Plymouth, but I put the dots close together to reflect the original map.
I'll bring up the map on my home computer and tweak it a bit in the Taranaki and Bay of Plenty regions. I should have the new version up by Monday
Thanks Lcmortensen (mailbox) 01:14, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

NZ Rivers

Hi Dramatic -silly question, but when you expanded all those NZ river articles (thank you for that, BTW), was there any reason why you didn't add the province category and change the stub template to the provincial one? I thought virtually none of the river had been dealt with yet, and was surprised to see that a lot of them had info filled in, yet were still in Category:New Zealand geography stubs rather than one of its subcategories... Grutness...wha? 01:02, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

I just view the category Grutness linked to above to remind me if I can't remember the names of the NZ geo-stubs. The other thing I have trouble remembering is the ISO_3166-2:NZ codes for the regions, to add to the {{coord}} template. Not sure how important the ISO code is, though.-gadfium 09:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Yup -that's the best place to find the template names. Usually if the "raw names" don't work (e.g., "WestCoast") simply adding "NZ" to the end will do the trick. As to forgetting - it's OK, I must admit to doing exactly the same with the WPNZ template (which I've just been adding to a load of river talk pages. It was just a friendly reminder, not a grumble :) Grutness...wha? 23:27, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Heh - looks like someone beat me to adding WPNZ to the rest of them. Grutness...wha? 23:31, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
DANG! I was using the presence of WPNZ (or any talk page) to track which ones had been done, and had suggested everyone do that.
Looks like it'll be a case of relying on Category:New Zealand geography stubs :/ Certainly when I stopped work last night there were several hundred with no talk-page templates, but (if New articles (NZ) is anything to go by) they've all got them now. Looks like AlbertHerring automatically added them all at the same time as he added the WP Rivers template. Grutness...wha? 23:51, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Much better to have this discussion earlier rather than later. I was running on the assumption (without having checked WP:N) that they would be notible. I will go through the one's I've done and look for additional resources, and nominate for deletion if I can't find any

SVG NZ electorate map?

Did you work in PNG when creating File:NZ 2008 election night map.png? If you did it in SVG, can you please upload that to commons? -- Jeandré (talk), 2009-09-24t10:00z

Thanks anyway - it's a really great map and worth a thousand edits. -- Jeandré (talk), 2009-09-24t20:13z

Hungarian New Zealander

When I saw, that somebody changed the traveled to travelled, I thought, it could be only a New Zealander :) And yes, you are! :) No problem, I love your country, that's why I wrote about this theme, I'm a Hungarian (who unfortunately doesn't live in Aotearoa). If you live there, do you have any Maori-speaking friend? I would like to have this artcle in the Maori Wikipedia, but there is not a great working :) Could you help to find a Maori translator? By the way, do you know / have you ever heard of Marton Csokas and Nándor Tánczos? Did you know, that they have Hungarian ancestry? --Eino81 (talk) 08:09, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Wow, so you met Marton! :) I know about him, that he got a Hungarian citizenship, he travelled to Hungary once and travelled around the country. At that time, unfortunately, I did not know, who he is, so we've never met :( --Eino81 (talk) 10:19, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
It's me again, with another theme. Could you tell me, which are the most well-known series in NZ? I know only the Shortland Street. I would like to see some NZ series, do you know, is there any of them on DC++ or torrent pages? --Eino81 (talk) 20:23, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, you were right, that www.tvnz.co.nz/video doesn't work outside NZ :( I saw once an Australian series (Last Man Standing) in finland, I loved that and I got a part of it via torrent. I know also from Australia the Stingers, but there is nothing about it on torrent. I would like to know, how could I see any NZ series... Good question... By the way, thank you for your answer :) --Eino81 (talk) 11:44, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
