Mediation reforms...
editAt the moment my plans only involve redoing the RfM page in RFAr style (using a table for current cases and subpages for requests) and making progress and results of mediation cases and possibly the mediation itself (when disputants agree) more transparent. Other reforms will have to wait until we've got the committee running smoothly again. For now, I think commenting on Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/RFC in my solution section is the best option. I'll inform you when I've got things down somewhere in a more coherent fashion. Mgm|(talk) 11:53, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)
- See: Wikipedia:Mediation (2005) , currently mediation is mainly being done by Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal . Kim Bruning 13:56, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wikiquette
editHi Dan. Found your message on my user page. Didn't know it wasn't supposed to be at Wikiquette. I just thought "somebody is not working with the right etiquette (deleting relevant, neutral and true information that he disagreed on, smearing, insulting, etc.), so I can put it on Wikiquette...". Didn't read the page thoroughly about what should be there and what not. Thanks for straightening that out! Regards, --MarioR 19:08, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dan, I note with interest your posting of a couple of dual-units alternatives for the Pan Am Flight 103 article. But maybe you should have paid attention to the earlier, similar ones which appear in the history, by both Bobblewik and by me.
In particular, one of the biggest problems is your formatting, closing up numbers and units without a space between them. I realize that some U.K. style guides have recommended that format, but the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers) is quite clear, and when it has been discussed it has been the general consensus that our rules should be to include the space between the numbers and the units.
- "The reader should see a space between the value and the unit symbol: "25 kg" and not "25kg"."
Not only is that the Wikipedia rule, but it is also the rule as set out by National Physical Laboratory, the U.K. national standards agency: [1]
- "A space is left between the numerical value and unit symbol (25 kg but not: 25-kg or 25kg). If the spelled-out name of a unit is used, the normal rules of English are applied."
This is also spelled out in more detail in NIST Special Publication 811. See item (10) at http://physics.nist.gov/Pubs/SP811/sec11.html and the detailed explanation at http://physics.nist.gov/Pubs/SP811/sec07.html#7.6

RfC
editI noticed your comment on the Pakistan RfC. Some of us went to a lot of trouble to avoid that on the RfC we submitted about George W. Bush, starting with a link to specific section of the talk page aimed at getting the visitor into the picture quickly: Talk:George W. Bush#Presentation of substance abuse issues. Of course, there's plenty of heated commentary after the basic RfC sections, but we at least tried. I think it's a big problem with RfC's, and I'd be interested in hearing your reaction to how this one was set up. JamesMLane 02:01, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- That's a good system you have going there. I guess it took the co-operation of all the parties involved in the dispute? It is, of course, a little disappointing that it's come down to polls on different versions (rather than everyone working towards one version they're all happy with), but sometimes that just ain't going to happen :-). Vandal bot
editHi Coolcat, that's an excellent system you got running there. Can I ask you though - why does everything the bot posts have a black background, at least in GAIM? The 'excuse' is coming out as black text on a black background, which of course isn't good :-) Dan100 (Talk) 13:26, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
- Actualy the color codes works fne on Mirc. I'll change excuse text to something else, hopefully makeing it readale. Its Cyan on mirc. The black background is to make sure the text is readable. It is just a quencedence of GAIM to read both color codes as the same maybe. Ill change it to something else. Tell me if it looks better. --Cool Cat My Talk 20:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

editSorry to have bothered you guys, but the RfC was suggested to me, and I requested it, because somebody keeps adding information about an Artimius Hollins in a very fake way. If he is real, he needs his own page we can link too that discuss him and his notably Antares33712 20:55, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

video painting copyright
edithi,
i created the article on video painting and also own the page which you are saying the article is infringing upon (namely http://www.nomig.net/index.php?subsub=About&navid=ambientvideo).
can you remove the ban please?
thanks
nomig
- I haven't exactly banned it, just highlighted the fact that it's a possible copyright violation. You need to go to here, find the Video painting entry, and then explain there why you feel it is not a violation of copyright. Dan100 (Talk) 14:03, July 28, 2005 (UTC)
hi again,
thanks for the link. i went there and edited the listing by providing a description as to why it's not copyright infringing (because i'm the author). two things i don't get: 1) how is anyone going to see my explanation amongst the large list? 2) now my edit is not appearing
i'm new here and don't understand the nuances of how to resolve this.
thanks for your help
nomig
- The first thing you need to do is create an account. That will give you your own user talk page so people can get in touch, and allow you to sign your posts by typing ~~~~.
- Second is - don't worry about your message being lost on that list. Everything on there is checked and inspected. However if you sign it it means people will be able to get in touch with you if they have any more questions. Dan100 (Talk) 07:51, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
hi again,
so it's been over the seven days that copyright violations are usually resolved in and there's nothing happening in regards to my issue here. I don't want to create an account as you mentioned above (i'd prefer not to have to do this to only make one or two entries, although if i werer to get into it, i would certainly sign up) and it seems to me that this can be resolved without me needing to do so. i've created a talk page for the article in question, i added my comments to the listing on the suspected violations page -- what else can i do? i'm feeling a little burned here; like i'm lost in a mire of public bureaucracy. so what can we do to resolve this??
thanks NomIg.

Asiamiles TFD
editI just noticed that you closed the discussion and kept the {{Asiamiles}} template. At that point, the vote was 3 delete to 2 keep, and the two keep votes said delete unless we decide to remove all frequent flyer templates. We actually are planning on doing that. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Airlines#Frequent_Flyer_Templates and Wikipedia:WikiProject Airlines#Templates for dicussion on the matter. The Asiamiles template isn't even used on most of the pages that it references (which probably explains why so few people voted), and keeping it will cause the problems mentioned in the TFD discussion. - I haven't reviewed the debate, but I voted keep and thing it should be kept. if you have deleted it, i will probably recreate a version of it at a better name which might have gotten a clearer keep consensus. DES (talk) 15:47, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
- I count 5 keeps, and one rename and implied keep (partiucualrly because a comprehensive rename was discussed in the context of {{tl:nn-bio}} ), and 4 deletes. Admitedly one of the deletes was "extreme". The arguments made, on each side, seemd exactly the same as those on {{tl:nn-bio}}. That doesn't look like a clear consensus to delete to me. Am I mis-counting here? How did you come to a delete consensus in this case? DES (talk) 15:52, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Primarily because one of the deletes was the creator of the template, and several of the keeps seemed to be more about instruction creep than the value or otherwise of the template itself. I noted that a couple of the deletes were experienced rc patrollers too, which lent weight to their votes. But like I said it was borderline, so if you want it back to do something useful with it (like implement a consist naming scheme so they'd be more usable), just ask! Dan100 (Talk) 16:05, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
- I'm asking! Specifically i plan to renmame ALL the speedy deeltion tempaltes to a consistant naming pattern so they ALL show up together in the relevant category, to ease the work of the admins on speedy patrol. current names will all be left as redirects. I thouhgt I made this intention clear in the nn-bio discussion, but let me be clear: i intend to do this today if at all possible. DES (talk) 16:15, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Nuclear Power
editDan, since you responded to the RfC you deserve an update.
Nuclear Power is quiescent at the moment - so is Price-Anderson Act (which is still frozen in Mediation). Today's action is in Energy Policy Act of 2005.
The sole problem user, Benjamin Gatti, got himself blocked for several days for other activities, including trying to write a Wikipedia policy. He's back now, seemingly much less aggressive.
I'll advise you if edit-warring breaks out again in Nuclear Power. My hope is that now that the Energy Bill got signed and Price-Anderson extended to 2025, that Ben will settle down. Simesa 21:17, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

Unblocked 68.165.134.106
editNoticed you unblocked User:68.165.134.106, whom I had blocked for 24 hours and Sasquatch had blocked until New Year's; the reason you listed was "don't long-term block IPs unless they're open proxies". Unless you have some objection, I'm going to go ahead and re-block this user until 21:59 11 August 2005 (UTC), the end of the original 24-hour block. - jredmond 23:25, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry yes I should've reblocked him for the 24 hours, but forgot :-). Remember that blocks don't have to be for 24 hours though - an hour-long block will often bore a vandal and make him go away; and long-term blocks on IPs (which might be dynamically assigned) isn't really a good idea. Dan100 (Talk) 08:54, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
- No problem. I was sticking with 24 hours as a starting point; that vandal's ISP (Covad) typically deals with always-on DSL connections which don't cycle IP addresses very often (if ever), so I figured that a day would be a sensible wikivacation for him/her. (Also, this gave me a chance to toy with the "custom" block length. :) - jredmond 14:46, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

editI saw you erased how to spot vandalism and made it a redirect to vandalism. Since you claim to be an admin on your user page, I hope and assume there was a vote somewhere for this. The Holding Cell and Closing TFDs
editDan, the reason the holding cell existed is that all uses of a template are supposed to be removed before it is deleted. See for example Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Rebellion which you deleted but didn't clean up, so now 10 article pages have dead links to this template.
The idea is that the closing admin decides how a template should be dealt with and if it is to be deleted, then they move it in to the holding cell so that all references can be removed by normal users (or it can be converted into a category / list, if that is the consensus). This decreases the work on admins by allowing normal users to take care of some of the necessary steps once the outcome has been decided. The fact that the holding cell has been empty is a reflection that TFD was backlogged and no one was closing nominations, not that the holding cell isn't used. If you back up a few weeks, one can see that it can be very busy: [2]
Please put back the holding cell and start using it.
Dragons flight 14:58, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
- I don't care much for your tone, thank you. A little politeness goes a long way.
- I will return the holding cell if no-one else has, although I will probably do the work myself rather than hoping others will do it for me.
- Now you see, how much better it is to put an explanation, rather than just reverting :-). Dan100 (Talk) 15:58, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
- I don't mean to be impolite, but I find it particularly annoying when someone deletes part of a process page they don't understand rather than asking what it is for. Dragons flight 16:06, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
I've returned the cell and updated the instructions to reflect it's use.
BTW, I removed all instances where Template:Rebellion had been used. Dan100 (Talk) 16:48, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, there is a "filmography", but .....
1. Unverifiable - absolutely nothing from Google that wasn't derived from Wikipedia
2. Credibility of filmography is low, given low level vandalism to Chilli Peppers page from same user claiming that Francesca Easthope was their drummer.
3. Even if filmography is accurate does it pass the significance test - child actress who hasn't achieved a name part?
If there were a user page I'd leave a nice note suggesting that if the user is Francesca that she moves her bio to her user page; but this was created from an anonymous log in.
What would you recommend? Leave it as is (tagged as cleanup-imprtance) or place on VfD? VfD seems heavy for a school student messing around!
Thanks
--Cje 12:29, 13 August 2005 (UTC) (a former resident of Reading, UK)
Just from the speedy guidelines - "An article about a real person that does not assert that person's importance or significance. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead."
So yeah, just place it on VfD. Dan100 (Talk) 13:28, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, Dan. I'm glad you decided on speedy in the end - nowadays putting something on VfD seems to provoke religious wars rather than a thougthful winnowing out of the good stuff from the nonsense. --Cje 13:42, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

- I think that "guideline" is silly, so I chose to ignore, as do many other editors it would seem. If it is so important to you, why not add it to CE yourself? Dan100 (Talk) 16:00, August 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Many reasons, including to avoid an edit conflict with you. I did add the Niger item to current event, though. Feel free to check the edit history. -- PFHLai 16:06, 2005 August 24 (UTC)
I think you misunderstand: I am suggesting that instead of reverting me, the constructive course of action for you to uphold your guideline was to have added the Lance news to Current Events yourself. Dan100 (Talk) 16:13, August 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I am not typing in anything till I'm done reading about it. And I can only do so much at one time. I took out both the Niger item and the item on Lance Armstrong from ITN for the same reason in the same edit. I finished reading about Niger, and I added it to Current events. Then I saw your edits. I still haven't read enough on Armstrong to handle the objections nor decide if it's ITN-worthy, so I left you the above msg. I couldn't continue at the time as I had to go offline. I was hoping that you would take over. Never mind. -- PFHLai 16:38, 2005 August 24 (UTC)
Userfying Wikipedia:WikiDefcon
editI'm trying to see if there is support for userfying this page as a way of resolving the dispute between Cool Cat and the rest of us. Let me know what you think, on the talk page. Thanks! JesseW 18:41, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
First article pitfalls
editI don’t know what’s wrong with my article about Beaufre? I can’t find it with Wikipedia search engine? Is there anything related to the fact that I’ve been listed in the Wikipedia:Deadend pages ? What’s wrong? I saw you modified it a little bit, could you check it one more time thus I’ll learn how to do it right ? Promise, after this I’ll publish rock solid articles with perfect formatting. Thanks Gilemon 06:20, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
Requests for comment on Researcher99's conduct on Talk:Polygamy
editI appreciate your help. I have created an RFC page for him Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Researcher99. If you feel it is appropriate, please make a comment on this page.
If anyone feels that my conduct needs an RFC, feel free to add me to Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User conduct. Nereocystis 17:17, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
Meetup
editHeya,
Just a quick note to remind you of the London Meetup this coming Sunday (the 11th of September) that you signed up for (as 'possible', so you'll be definitely coming then, won't you? ;-)). It's at the Archery Tavern, just next to Lancaster Gate tube station, from 13:00 (BST) onwards.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Yours,
Site notice and VFD
editFYI- Raul654 removed the VFD notice. --24.165.233.150 01:29, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
Your bias is showing
editTell me Dan, how do you reconcile the below message with your current efforts?
I don't care that Jimbo doesn't like it. I don't care that Brittanica haven't got one. There is clear community consensus for it and let's be honest here, it is the right thing to do.
If any admin is reading this, please restore it at the earliest possible opportunity. Thanks in advance. Dan100 10:00, Jan 1, 2005 (UTC)
So why is the current notice not the right thing to do? Do you value the lives of some groups of people over others? I started a page that I hoped could be expanded to be inclusive. But nobody is going to spend much effort on it while it is on VfD. I sure hope you are proud of yourself. --mav 04:34, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- Hmmm? I've relented to having the "Other charities" link on the site, what's your point? But if you must know - yes, I believe this disaster is nowhere near as bad as the 2004 IOT and does not deserve any kind of link to from Wikipedia. Dan100 (Talk) 07:23, September 8, 2005 (UTC)
- The page is not event-specific. Either the community has changed a great deal since January, or there is so much anti-American bigotry in it that they would reject the whole page just because it prominently lists an event in the United States. This is sad. --mav 15:25, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
Charitable causes
editIn case you haven't noticed, the page was pulled from MediaWiki:Sitenotice by Raul654 after I made a pretty compelling (and probably annoying) argument on IRC and at WP:AN/I#Charitable_causes_VFD. It was later readded by Mav, who used the site-wide link as an excuse to pull the VFD notice (nice huh?). The state Raul left the site notice in was one which several users thought might be an interesting comprimise, it included the trueism that other charities need help, which might make some people who consider the wikipedia donation drive selfish feel better, but it avoids the POV trap of actually listing them... Oh well. In any case you'll also notice the list really isn't getting any editoral oversight beyond the fact that only admins can edit it. Case in point the Ayn Rand Institute didn't even manage to gather commentary while it was up. --Gmaxwell 08:08, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- I'm happy to leave whether or not to link to that page up to them. I believe two things: that no one charity should be singled-out (hence my removing the Red Cross link), and that the charitable causes has no place anywhere on Wikipedia. Dan100 (Talk) 08:24, September 8, 2005 (UTC)
- You certainly did not have an issue with the tsunami message. --mav 13:02, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- Mav, why not replace his userpage with a copy of his tsunami argument in the biggest font you can muster? It might be noticed by someone who cares and couldn't look more silly than what you're doing now. Dan may have supported the tsunami message on the front page, but there are a lot of other editors who are unhappy about this message who did not support the tsunami message. Your argument is not compelling. --Gmaxwell 14:02, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- You certainly did not have an issue with the tsunami message. --mav 13:02, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- What I'm doing may look silly to you, but what Dan and many others who supported the tsunami message but don't support this one are doing looks like anti-American bigotry to me. The way things stand, it looks to me like Dan supported a message for the tsunami but did not support an event-neutral listing just because it prominently had an American event on it. My original list did not have nearly as many links under the Katrina sub-list as the current version does. Somebody else added those. It was my sincere hope that the whole page could be expanded and improved. I'd much rather be seen as being silly in biased eyes vs being seen as being callous and bigoted. --mav 15:34, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
OffCenter Group afd
editHi, Dan. I noticed you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/OffCenter Group as a redirect. I don't see any suggestions that "redirect" would be the proper course, so I was wondering how you arrived at this decision. I left a message on the talk page. Joyous (talk) 00:31, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
- Redirection is obviously what should have been done in the first place. Dan100 (Talk) 10:31, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- I respectfully disagree. The original discussion wasn't "should all the duplicate articles redirect to OffCenter Group". The article OffCenter Group itself was put up for deletion. You closed the discussion before any consensus was able to emerge. So, now we have all these articles that redirect to an article that still, IMO, shouldn't be here. Joyous (talk) 20:28, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've added OffCenter Group to WP:DRV, so you may want to add to the discussion there. Joyous (talk) 00:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
We have WP:VFU for undeletions, particularly for reviewing the closure of deletion AfDs. We also have talk pages for discussing the matter beforehand. So before you undelete it again, can we talk about it one or more of those places? Thanks. -Splash 03:46, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
- In fact, I've taken it to VfU for you; it seems only fair since you are entitled to seek to review my closure. -Splash 04:30, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
The vote was split about 50/50 - nowhere near a consensus for deletion. Dan100 (Talk) 10:33, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- The VfU 'vote' that you just ignored was split 14-3 in favour of keeping deleted. You should not have undeleted it again. Moreover, you should have dropped the VfU discussion a note, or me a note, or preferably both. To not do so twice is extremely discourteous. You may disagree with all the discussions, but that does not license you to close your eyes to two discussions, one backing up the other. Since I've just re-redeleted it, I've let WP:AN/I know. -Splashtalk 16:52, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
Dan100, are you looking at a different vote? The VfU vote was 14-3 in favor of keeping deleted and the AfD vote was 6-4 (6-3 if you toss the unsigned anon vote). I can't find a 50/50 vote in either. Now that the 60% (or 66%) delete vote was confirmed with an overwhelming 14-3 VfU vote do you have any further objections to the article's deletion? - Tεxτurε 17:01, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
Could you explain that resolution to me? I usually don't question other admins, but none of those votes are for "keep". If you think it is no consensus, then you probably should label it as such. --Woohookitty 08:19, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
Wikimania 2006 in London?

Harris City Technology College
editThanks for restoring, tidying up and renaming Harris City Technology College. When I first saw it it looked like non-notable school vanity, mostly due to the lack of links and the claim that "it is best known for these two people" (obviously, one of them is the article's author). You did a great job giving it its proper name and adding an external link. I'm horrible at British geography, but isn't Reading (where you live) somewhere near Croydon (where the school is)? — JIP | Talk 12:29, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
- Not really - Britain is a small country, but not that small - it's about 30 miles "as the crow flies" away, but takes a good hour to drive there due to congestion etc. Croydon is part of London, btw. Dan100 (Talk) 10:30, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Deleting images
editHello. Would it be possible for you to remove the images from the article page before you delete them? I notice you deleted some images but they are still linked to Bilston Glen. - Ta bu shi da yu 09:29, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
VfU template
editHi. When you put in the VfU template on Wikipedia:Votes for Undeletion, you apparently also deleted a lot of comments and opinions about various articles up for undeletion. Was this intentional, accidental, or did I misunderstand what happened? Nandesuka 20:12, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- I haven't checked, but it sounds like a mistake! Dan100 (Talk) 20:30, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've just seen that as well. A whole slew of comments were removed—from in between other comments that were left behind. I'm not sure what you did, Dan100, but I hope you'll fix it soon.—encephalonεγκέφαλον 20:38, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
I fixed it before you posted here :-) Dan100 (Talk) 20:40, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- Yup. Just saw it. Thanks. *mutters about damned WP connection being so slow lately*—encephalonεγκέφαλον 20:41, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've reposted my votes, so no problem there, but WP sure has been slow lately... Titoxd 20:43, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Your undeletion of List of gags in Airplane! was completely inappropriate. VfU vote was clear consensus to keep deleted. What is your justification for undeletion? User:Zoe|(talk) 08:57, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
