Thanks for bearing with me at FLC edit

Thanks for bearing with my nom of Justin Moore discography at WP:FLC. I've had no previous experience with the featured lists, and it's been a mess (and me missing/not finding simple changes) because of my not being good at that. I'm sorry I've created such a mess with that nom, it was in pretty bad shape. Thanks for working with it. Hog Farm (talk) 05:41, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

AFD closing edit

Greetings. I am exploring the option of merge at AFD and an issue that has been on-going for good while and fosters some confusion. You closed some discussions that is in line with these thoughts at:

I am not presently contesting the closing but maybe the wording, and maybe because there is a step missing that is confusing and that makes it appear that merge is not an option at AFD. I got sick and ended up at the hospital so was not able to add to the discussion (that was likely "merge") but it seems the discussion was leaning that direction. A "keep" is a very clear indication that consensus deems an article deserves stand alone status, and "no consensus" defaults to keep. All other options provided indicate that for whatever reasons, possibly there is some notability but maybe considered bare or semi-notable, or that a subject (especially a stub) might be better handled under another title such as a parent.

I have seen closer's comment that AFD is not a place to discuss merge, but that is not according to the wording at WP:AFD, Common outcomes are that the article is kept, merged, redirected, incubated, renamed/moved to another title, userfied to a user subpage, or deleted per the deletion policy., The last one is somewhat vague as it mentions merging, although under deletion "policy", it somewhat avoids that merge is an actual option of a AFD, although it has clearly been many times.
The merging "information page" provides, If there is a rough consensus for a merger at the end of a deletion discussion, the following template is placed at the top of the nominated article: (providing the template), that indicates being used at the top of the article, and Similarly, the following template is placed on the destination article's talk page (template shown):
  • This "step" provides a couple of important things. It gives notice that a discussion at AFD indicated there was a consensus (clear, rough, possible, or leaning) that a merge was indicated. This, at a minimum, does not discount opinions of those participating at AFD, or indirectly kick the discussion back to the article talk page where it may not be followed or that article maybe "protected" or contentious.
The tags would give clarity, and are apparently listed for a reason, and should be performed by the closing admin as a last step of the AFD so the "next step "might be possible if deemed appropriate: It is the involved editors' job, not the closing administrators' job, to perform the merger.

So, in my opinion, if we are going to "kick a discussion back to the article", the steps should be followed so far various reasons all can be informed, and links can be put in a "merger" section to the other articles providing a full circle if that is determined a path to follow. I have to go to work, and was not able to dig into this as much as I would like, but wanted to get your opinions before going farther as "keep or merge" on the AFD page only (lacking the indicated tags), especially after the article page templates are removed, leaves some confusion. ...Baby One More Time FLC edit

Hi, Chris. I was aware that this FLC has been slow to close, which happens every once in a while. Perhaps it's because I labeled it as withdrawn instead of archived when I originally tried to close it. In case that was the problem, I just changed the wording in the closure template. If the FLC still isn't closed by the weekend, I'll leave a message on FLC talk about the issue. Thanks for reminding me to look into this. Giants2008 (Talk) 23:14, 23 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Chris. I was one of the supporters at that FLC, so I couldn't close it even though it probably has sufficient support at this point. If the FLC hasn't been closed by tonight, I'll let the other potential closers know about the situation. Giants2008 (Talk) 13:42, 27 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Magnification edit

Hi Chris, thanks for all your work at WP:FLC. I'm working on a list, but getting nervous about a comment you made in one of the reviews: "the "lots of little tables" format has been deprecated for quite some time". I always work at a magnification (i.e. Ctrl-+ on a laptop) of either 133% or 150% on Wikipedia. I have no difficulty reading a list such as List of local nature reserves in Berkshire, and I'm happy to review it ... but I would never write the list that way myself, because at either 133% or 150%, 90% of the text winds up in the rightmost 1.25 inches of my screen. After perusing WP:FL, I didn't think I would have a problem creating a table or tables that would work for me, WP:FL seems to have many options ... but if the fashion these days is to put everything in one long table, that's going to be a problem for me. If I have a column with a lot more text than the other columns, would it be acceptable to put a link in that column to a subsection below the table that provides room for a full description? Or to create a second table with just two columns, the first being identical to the first column in the first table and the second just for text, similar to the last column of List of local nature reserves in Berkshire? - Dank (push to talk) 14:58, 2 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

A third option would be to have a prose description in a second row under each entry ... that would work for me too, but I've heard that that interferes with the table's ability to do any sorting. - Dank (push to talk) 15:48, 2 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Dank: that comment referred specifically to lists of awards, where the norm used to be to have a separate section/table for every different type of award which the subject had won, but nowadays the norm is to have everything in one table. Is that the sort of list you are working on? For other subjects, multiple tables might still be appropriate. It's probably also worth posing the question at WT:FLC, as other regular reviewers might have thoughts. Cheers -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 09:08, 3 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Glad to hear. I'm pulling my sources together now ... I don't want to embarrass myself, so if it's okay, I'll post a table here when I create one so that the issues will be clearer ... if it looks good to you, I'll post my comment at WT:FLC. - Dank (push to talk) 13:53, 3 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Of course - that's absolutely fine! -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 13:57, 3 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Did some research, got my answer ... the 3rd option is out per WP:ACCESS and the 2nd isn't fashionable, so it's Door No. 1. - Dank (push to talk) 02:31, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

FWIW, I'm running back through all of Giants's and the delegates' recent comments ... it turns out rowspans (the 3rd option above, more or less) have been resuscitated by recent conversations at WT:ACCESS and elsewhere, and Giants and PresN don't consider them a stopper now (I think, per Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Michael W. Smith discography/archive1). My next FLC will have it formatted both ways, and reviewers can make the call. - Dank (push to talk) 01:46, 9 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I got some encouragement so I went ahead and posted at WT:FLC, check it out. - Dank (push to talk) 04:00, 14 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Dank: nice one :-) -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 08:26, 14 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

The editing of Brownhills edit

Why have you changed the edit of the new information and modern update of the Brownhills page?? XMarksTheSpot20 (talk) 12:25, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@XMarksTheSpot20: - I changed the formatting of the image in the infobox because it was done incorrectly and looked a mess. I changed the population figure back to what it had been before because you did not provide a reliable source for your revised figure (or indeed any source at all). If you can provide a reliable source for the new figure, that's great. If not, it will be reverted to a figure for which we have a reliable source -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 12:30, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

The local population was an estimation based on new housing developments such as Ellum Point and the old market.

Why have you deleted the street art information, that has been a talking point over the last few years, Brownhills has become a area with exciting new street art, earning plenty of recognition by local newspapers and internet media outlets.

Do you live in Brownhills? XMarksTheSpot20 (talk) 12:37, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@XMarksTheSpot20: - Whether I live in Brownhills is not relevant to my ability to edit its article in accordance with WP guidelines. With regard to the population, WP is based on information from reliable sources, not editors' personal educated guesses. As mentioned, if you have a reliable source (see the blue link in the previous sentence for what that covers) for the up-to-date figure then include it as a reference. If the updated figure is simply your own best guess, then unfortunately it won't be accepted -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 12:42, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ok granted about the population but you shouldn’t delete the new information about street art, that is not a personal guess and it is a reality of what is happening in the town. I will add another piece about the street art as I along with others find it a point of interest and important to a town that has been neglected over many years. Also Brownhills neighbours Walsall Wood before it neighbours Stonnall so again, you changed that unjustly. I take your point about population but the other edits there was no need. I am quite confused between the term Honorary Doctorate Degree and Doctorate Degree. Need your recommendation what would be better--25 CENTS VICTORIOUS  14:24, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@25 Cents FC: - an honorary doctorate degree is one which is given to a well-respected or famous person as a recognition of their contribution to their field or to the world in general, without their having actually studied for it. Simply saying "doctorate degree" would indicate that they actually studied for it. Does that help? -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 14:27, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jaberts123: It looks better but there's quite a bit still to do. There are now lots of rows where the recipient says "herself" but some still say her actual name. The rows with her name still sort alphabetically under D when it should be L. The ones starting with a " still sort based on the " rather than on the first word. You still have TV shows listed as being nominated for awards like "Best young actress" (it was not the show that won the award). The 100th image is "felted", and the images go all the way down the page ... so if that page loads correctly, then it must be something else about List of descriptive plant epithets (I–Z) that's causing the problem for you, apart from the number of images (or maybe it was just random). - Dank (push to talk) 13:13, 19 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hanlan at Gills edit

What's your thoughts on people editing Hanlan back in? He's not under contract, but I we still hold his registration. Is he technically part of our First Team Squad? Frediculous biggs (talk) 13:42, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Frediculous biggs: - is he actually eligible to play for Gills in his current situation (I genuinely don't know)? If yes, then I guess he is (even tenuously) a member of the first team squad. If not then he should probably be removed. Let's hope someone comes in with a better offer than the one that was rejected yesterday and the whole thing can be put to bed....... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 14:27, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@ChrisTheDude: I don't believe he is eligible to play for us unfortunately (He surely would have been on the bench for the Trophy game). Indeed, let's hope it is sorted soon. Frediculous biggs (talk) 16:02, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well that solves that problem then! Frediculous biggs (talk) 18:51, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Awards pages formatting edit

Hi, I've seen that you are always helping with the Wikipedia:Featured list candidates, which many times are pages about awards won by film or people, so I want to ask if you know about the reason behind the use of a single awards table instead of multiple ones (for example List of awards and nominations received by Jennifer Lawrence). I'm asking you this because there are people who are making a big fuss about the current formatting on the Talk:List of awards and nominations received by Zendaya page; they're saying that the current format used by many featured lists (like the Natalie Portman one) is "confusing and unorganized". Thanks for the help! --Leo Mercury (talk) 14:41, 23 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Leo Mercury: my understanding is that people simply thought (and I tend to agree with them) that an article consisting of 15 or 20 separate tables with as few as one row in each looked messy. In the case of the Zendaya article, five out of the first six tables (if it was split out) would only have one row and I do not think that would be a good design for the page. The J-Law article has over 30 tables, almost all of which are tiny, and also suffers from having an insanely long TOC. I can't see that the latter necessarily looks any better on mobile, either, which seems to be some people's concern. Don't know if that helps at all....? -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 18:25, 23 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

List of monuments to Ludwig van Beethoven edit

Hey Chris, I hope you're doing well. I'm working on List of monuments to Ludwig van Beethoven and at the moment I'm ordering the monuments by the date they were unveiled (since that's the date that sources give) but I see that the German version has them sorted by location, any thoughts about this? I'm leaning towards year since location can be done by the sortable columns but am unsure. Aza24 (talk) 23:29, 24 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Aza24: I think by date works best. As far as I can see, the German version has them broken into separate tables for Bonn/Vienna/everywhere else and then sorts them by date within each table. This seems like an unnecessary level of complication to me...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:30, 25 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

ask question edit

hello. I've created this on 29 September (without any history) but an admin deleted it! my article is notable according to WP:NFOOTY that clearly says, only one match play in professional league becomes footballer notable and there is no difference between persons for same job (Area) : Players who have played, and managers who have managed, in a competitive game between two teams from fully professional leagues will generally be regarded as notable. See a list of fully professional leagues kept by WikiProject Football. ″Peyman Keshavarzi Nazarloo″ has played in both Azerbaijan Premier League (Azerbaijan) and Persian Gulf Pro League (Iran) and even he scored on 21 August 2020. These leagues are existed in WP:FPL as a professional's league. The reason of Afd (on 24 September) was for something else (creation of banned user not for notability of the article), i didn't know the history of that issues before. i think user:GiantSnowman deletion of my article (G4) might not be correct because the pages wasn't similar. i was working on Sabail FK and created template, category, and one player for that club (look at my edits on that day).″Giant″ said that was wp:salt ! but again wrong! A solution for wp:salt is : if an article create in a correct edition (by confirmed user) and it be survive, we can get rid of repeatedly creation by banned users. that's important point. now the article has Require administrator access that's another problem. how can i solve this? can you help me? the article notability is clear but the problem is banned users created this before (i don't know about this problem until few days ago). i created that in my own edition and that was like my other works : Mostafa Aghajani & Mohammad Ali Kazemi & Kamal Nikkhoui ...I don't have a deleted article in my 80 works.i don't understand what was problem of my article.please help to undelete. Best--Mojtaba2361 (talk) 01:57, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

(talk page watcher) Mojtaba2361 as I advised you on my talk page, you should take this to deletion review. Best, Eddie891 Talk Work 02:05, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Eddie891 thanks.but i want to know what's Mr chris opinion about this. your deletion was correct but Giant's not! What is the chance of success for the return of the article in wp:DRV? how long does it take to undelete article?--Mojtaba2361 (talk) 02:14, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Mojtaba2361 not sure why you would consider my opinion particularly important or significant. As mentioned above, you should take it to DRV..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:19, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
