Coffee, Re: rethinking my last remark

Ched, I was making a point. The remark I made was the same one that brought the matter to WQA. Incidentally, if you felt the need to tell me to rethink it, objectively you probably should do the same to Coffee; but the matter seems to be resolved anyway for now. I hope it's resolved. It's just that 2 wrongs are never going to make a "right" (although 3 lefts will). I'll admit, I personally happen to like Coffee a great deal - I respect what he's done, and where he's come from, but I won't get into details there. Sure, I admit that his wording could have been less than optimal - but just like I got my head handed to me for trying to get another editor unblocked for a "shit for brains" remark a while back; I just don't want to see things escalate here either. Yea, sometimes tensions build up (for whatever reasons), and things get said that shouldn't be. We're all here to build an encyclopedia, and I hate seeing those kind of USENET flamewars get started. We all have our "trigger words" and phrases that piss us off, and we all want to respond in kind when provoked. But the bottom line is that it's not going to get anyone anywhere. Any type of "dick-measuring" over the Internet is simply going to be a waste of keystrokes. It's only going to increase anger levels all the way around. Eventually - somebody is going to end up getting blocked by some passing admin that either isn't aware of the entire situation, has a particular bias, or simply doesn't care. I hate seeing folks get blocked, and if I can possibly help it, I'll try to avoid it. And if possible, I'll even try to diffuse a tense situation when I see it. I'm just asking that we all try to show a modicum of respect for each other; even those we don't agree with. — Ched :  ?  23:35, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

You're correct about two wrongs not making a right. This wasn't due to my having felt provoked, and I normally wouldn't have made a comment like that just because someone else did. It was part of a larger effort. I was hoping to show Coffee how it feels to be on the receiving end of a comment like that. Your response to it was actually the most useful result of it -- it basically showed that a comment like that does indeed need to be rethought. I'm frankly horrified at some of the proposed motions, and what seems to me to be the dishonesty underpinning their justification, but that's another story. Copyedit request

Would you copyedit David Pearson? I just posted a complete rewrite to the article and I nominated it for both Did You Know and Good Article. It will be my 100th DYK (includes my work plus nominations)! Thank you!

I hope you are doing good. I am, and I'm looking forward to Christmas. My ISP has canceled service for my area, so I'm forced to find another. I had already been looking, so that's a good thing. My options are very limited since almost no one can get a good signal in my (rural) area (I explored about 7 options!). DSL is not an option except in nearby cities. I think I found one that has a signal originating on city water tower less than 5 miles away; they're coming out on December 31st for installation. I have the option of canceling if they can't find a good signal. If that doesn't work, I'm going to a satellite provider. Satellite will take time to arrange, so there's a chance that I'll have no internet starting December 31st. As usual, please respond here on your talk page to keep everything together. Thank you for doing the copyedit! My internet has been running like a 2 cylinder putt putt tractor with a corroded battery cable since June or July - they're dropping the signal on Dec 30th. I wasn't able to get my prospective new ISP to install until Dec 31st. This change will be very good for me. My internet has been gone for the evening by 6:00 way too many times. I'd look at my monitor and wonder if they'll ever figure out the problem. No chance for editing Wikipedia or any other internet. So I got good at playing a certain PC game. Motorsport help needed

I bet you're a fan expert in this area like me! I'm working on an article for SpeedWeek (the ESPN program) in my 2nd sandbox. Do you have an references for it? It was a great show and I watched it whenever I could. That show was a big part with why I have such a broad background and interest in working on oddball racing topics. I find TONS of references to the show in blogs and forums, but reliable sources are weak. I hope you are doing well. Actually I did have (quite) a few drinks at home on New Years Eve, but other than that - time just hasn't allowed me to enjoy the fruits of "buzzdom" like one would hope. 8-) .... anyway - I suspect things will slow for me here shortly - perhaps after the DC meetup I can get back to actually contributing productively to the project (one can hope anyway). Community de-Adminship - finalization poll for the CDA proposal

After tolling up the votes in the revision proposals, it emerged that 5.4 had the most support, but elements of that support remained unclear, and various comments throughout the polls needed consideration.

A finalisation poll (intended, if possible, to be one last poll before finalising the CDA proposal) has been run to;

• gather opinion on the 'consensus margin' (what percentages, if any, have the most support) and

• ascertain whether there is support for a 'two-phase' poll at the eventual RfC (not far off now), where CDA will finally be put to the community.

The RfC on the Community de-Adminship proposal has begun

The RfC on the Community de-Adminship proposal was started on the 22nd Feb, and it runs for 28 days. Please note that the existing CDA proposal was (in the end) run as something of a working compromise, so CDA is still largely being floated as an idea.

Also note that, although the RfC is in 'poll format' (Support, Oppose, and Neutral, with Comments underneath), this RfC is still essentially a 'Request for Comment'. Currently, similar comments on CDA's value are being made under all three polls.

Whatever you vote, your vote is welcome!

A quick question

Hello, I've come to you because I know VERY little about Wikipedia and I've noticed you've edited the talk page of an article I have a question about multiple times (and you happen to be an administrator...).

I'm related to Ann B. Davis, and I've noticed her birth-date is incorrect (as well as a few other minor details). I'm going to go out on a limb and say "Because she told me so." is not a valid reference... How would I resolve the issue without having to ask her to scan her birth certificate...

Ched is inactive, so I'll answer for him. You're trying to disprove something that appears to be proven since it has a source. You need to find a reliable source which contains the correct birth date. You'll have much easier time if the source is online. Saying that you have the birth certificate wouldn't even work and neither would saying that you're a relative (I would being lying but I could "say" the same thing). Good luck! Article of the month – 2010 Toyota/Save Mart 350, new Good Article. The 2010 Toyota/Save Mart 350 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held on June 20, 2010 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California. Contested over 110 laps, it was the sixteenth race of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season and the first of two road course competitions on the schedule. The race was won by Jimmie Johnson, for the Hendrick Motorsports team. Robby Gordon finished second, and Kevin Harvick, who started fourth, clinched third. Conditions were sunny at the start of the race, making the track potentially slippery. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead into the first corner, but Johnson, who had started in the second position on the grid, took the lead before the first lap was over. Kahne suffered an ill-handling car during the beginning of the race, causing him to fall to seventh by the sixth lap. Seven laps before the finish, race leader Marcos Ambrose, turned his car off to try to save fuel, but he could not refire the engine and subsequently stalled. He dropped back from the lead to sixth place with seven laps remaining, allowing Kahne to finish fourth and Jeff Gordon fifth. There were eight cautions and twelve lead changes among eight different drivers throughout the course of the race, Johnson's fourth win of the season and his first ever at Infineon. The result moved him up four spots to second in the Drivers' Championship, 140 points behind of leader Kevin Harvick and one ahead of Kyle Busch. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, nine points ahead of Toyota and forty-three ahead of Dodge, with twenty races remaining in the season. (More...)

Article of the month – 2010 Food City 500, a recent good article The 2010 Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee was the fifth race of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The race began at 1 p.m. EDT on March 21, 2010. The 2010 Food City 500 was televised on Fox and broadcast on PRN radio. This race marked the last appearance of the rear wing on the Car of Tomorrow, with the spoiler returning the following race. This race also was the first of three in Carl Edwards' probation following his altercation with Brad Keselowski at the previous race at Atlanta Motor Speedway; Keselowski was sent airborne, subsequently crashing on his side door. The race had 13 different leaders, 39 lead changes and 10 cautions. The race attendance of 138,000 marked the end of a long streak of sellout seats at the track, which has a capacity of 158,000. Article of the month – 2010 Carfax 400, a recent good article The 2010 Carfax 400 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race that was held on August 15, 2010 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. Contested over 200 laps, it was the twenty-third race of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season. The race was won by Kevin Harvick for the Richard Childress Racing team. Denny Hamlin finished second, and Carl Edwards, who started twenty-fourth, clinched third. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead into the first corner to begin the race, but Jimmie Johnson, who started in the second position on the grid, took the lead before the first lap was over. Afterward, Greg Biffle became the leader, and would eventually lead to the race high of 66 laps. Tony Stewart led after the final pit stops, ahead of Hamlin and Harvick. Harvick helped Hamlin to become the leader, but with twelve laps left, Harvick gained on Hamlin and claimed the first position with eleven lap remaining. Harvick maintained his position to claim his first Sprint Cup victory at Michigan International Speedway. There were five cautions and nineteen lead changes among nine different drivers throughout the course of the race, Harvick's third win of the season. The result maintained the first position in the Drivers' Championship and clinched him a position in the Chase. He remained 293 points ahead of second place driver Jeff Gordon and 353 ahead of Denny Hamlin. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, thirty points ahead of Toyota and sixty-one ahead of Ford, with thirteen races remaining in the season. A total of 105,000 people attended the race, while 4.917 million watched it on television. (More...)

Article of the month – Alan Kulwicki, selected as a good article Alan Dennis Kulwicki (December 14, 1954 – April 1, 1993), nicknamed "Special K" and the "Polish Prince", was an American NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup Series) racecar driver. He started racing at local short tracks in Wisconsin before moving up to regional stock car touring series. Kulwicki arrived at NASCAR, the highest and most expensive level of stock car racing in the United States, with no sponsor, a limited budget, and only a racecar and a borrowed pickup truck. Despite starting with meager equipment and finances, he earned the 1986 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award over drivers racing for well-funded teams. After Kulwicki won his first race at Phoenix International Raceway, he debuted what would become his trademark "Polish Victory Lap". Kulwicki won the 1992 Winston Cup championship by what was then the closest margin in NASCAR history. He died early in 1993 in a light aircraft accident, and was unable to defend his championship. He has been inducted into numerous racing halls of fame and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. Kulwicki was known for being a perfectionist and doing things his own way. An engineer by trade, his scientific approach to NASCAR racing inspires the way teams are now run. Despite lucrative offers from top car owners, he insisted on driving for his own race team, AK Racing, during most of his NASCAR career. Described by his publicist as "a real hard type of person to get to know", he remained a bachelor throughout his life. (More...)

Article of the month – Auto Club Speedway, a recent good article Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) is a two-mile (3 km), low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California which has hosted NASCAR racing annually since 1997. The track was also used for open wheel racing events until 2005. The racetrack is located near the former locations of Ontario Motor Speedway and Riverside International Raceway. The track is currently owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation and is the only track owned by ISC to have naming rights sold. The speedway is served by the nearby Interstate 10 and Interstate 15 freeways as well as a Metrolink station located behind the backstretch.Construction of the track, on the site of the former Kaiser Steel Mill, began in 1995 and was completed in late 1996. The speedway has a grandstand capacity of 91,200 and 28 skyboxes. In 2006, a fanzone was added behind the main grandstand. Lights were added to the speedway in 2004 with the addition of a second annual NASCAR weekend. In 2011 the track will host only one NASCAR weekend. (More...)

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

You are invited to WikiXDC, a special meetup event and celebration on Saturday, January 22 hosted by the National Archives and Records Administration in downtown Washington, D.C.

• Date: January 22, 2011 (tentatively 9:30 AM - 5 PM)
• Location: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), downtown building, Pennsylvania Avenue & 7th St NW.
• Description: There will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Archives and you will learn more about what NARA does. We will also have a mini-film screening featuring FedFlix videos along with a special message from Jimmy Wales. In the afternoon, there will be lightning talks by Wikimedians (signup to speak), wiki-trivia, and cupcakes to celebrate!
