Articles for deletion nomination of Bobby Kerr (businessman)

I have nominated Bobby Kerr (businessman), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bobby Kerr (businessman). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Bonewah (talk) 17:43, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:RTÉ News Ident.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:RTÉ News Ident.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 11:41, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (File:RTÉ News Studio 2009.png)

Thanks for uploading File:RTÉ News Studio 2009.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 11:41, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Re:Deletion of images

I'm happy to discuss specific cases with you, but please link to the image description pages. I'm not familiar with the subject matter, and I am not sure which images you are referring to. J Milburn (talk) 12:05, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I had nothing to do with the deletion of File:Gaybyrne.jpg, and it was deleted years ago- I'm assuming you mean a different file? Image:RTÉ News Now Layout 2009.png is non-replaceable, I do not dispute that, but I do not see why it is needed- the image was just thrown into the article next to a list, and didn't seem to be showing anything in particular- see point 8 of the non-free content crtieria. Again, with File:RTÉ News Ident.png, I'm not seeing what it's actually adding to the articles. If we had an article on the programme it is used to represent, it would fit nicely into the infobox, but, as it is, we don't, and so it's just cluttering an article about the channel. We don't have the logos of every programme shown on BBC1 in our article, do we? J Milburn (talk) 12:17, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
The point I'm making is that slamming non-free logos into articles only loosely related to the subject of the logo is not good form. Where the channel is makes no difference to the policies we follow. The Byrne picture can be discussed at the FFD debate- no need to argue about it here. J Milburn (talk) 12:23, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Re (again): Deletion of images

He is doing the appropriate thing but some (if not most) of the images can be saved. It is not wise to place so many unfree images in such a general article as this will happen sooner or later. Just make sure that the images are placed in their specific related article; for instance, File:7 days RTÉ.png is supposed to be in 7 Days (Ireland) (which it actually is but you might want to check the rest to be sure). File:Prime Time RTE.jpg should be in Prime Time only. File:RTÉ News Now Layout 2009.png should go in RTÉ News Now. File:RTÉ News and Current Affairs - Irish and International News.jpg can be transferred to RTÉ.ie. File:RTÉ Aertel.PNG can go in RTÉ Aertel. I don't know what the problem with File:RTÉ News Ident.png is since it is the logo of the department but I will look into it further. Just ensure the others are where they are supposed to be and I will see if I can update the fair use rationale on them. If they are still deemed inappropriate they will have to be deleted but the logos should be fine if they stay where they are supposed to be. --candlewicke 14:13, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Others from RTÉ. File:Bosco.jpg should be in Bosco as a representation of the character. File:Rte1des90.jpg can go in RTÉ One. File:Rteguide.jpg = RTÉ Guide. File:Gaybyrnelate.jpg might just have to be deleted unless a place can be found for it in The Late Late Show as an example of a broadcaster in his natural environment before he retired... --candlewicke 14:20, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiCup

This might be just your thing since you work on articles for DYK and ITN. Signup for 2010 is open now. You can read more here. --candlewicke 18:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

There aren't really any tasks. You just edit normally and are awarded points based upon what you do. These could easily change next year but this year's are listed on the page at the moment. A normal edit is 0.1 so ten get you one point. A minor edit is 0.01 so one hundred get you one point. DYKs and ITNs (of which you have a few) get you 5 points each provided that you have either created or expanded them in some way. Then there's good articles, featured articles, pictures, sounds, etc. which all have a large amount of points. You get placed in a pool with four others and if you reach the required amount (i.e. by topping the pool or winning one of the wildcards) you go through to the next round. You receive your own submissions page where you place notes of your ITNs, DYKs, GAs, FAs, etc. It doesn't really interfere, if anything it provides you with inspiration/motivation to edit, meet a target and Wikipedia benefits from the content improvement. You can choose which subject you edit so it works for anyone really, no matter what their interests are. --candlewicke 19:38, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
That's why I thought you'd be perfect - you've already been involved in DYK and ITN and have months to become involved in other things if you wish as well. :) --candlewicke 19:58, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Vincent Browne

Yes, if it's free. Do you have enough information to expand him five-fold (requirement for DYK)? That would be quite some article when finished. :) --candlewicke 22:11, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Rollback

I have 2 granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. \ Backslash Forwardslash / {talk} 23:06, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Adoption

Yes! I did put a message quite a while ago on the talkpage of someone who I thought might be interested in adopting me but no reply. Nevertheless, if you would be willing to adopt me I would be most grateful. Bittersweetsmile (talk) 16:45, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Also would you prefer to talk on my talk page or yours? Bittersweetsmile (talk) 17:13, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Bittersweetsmile (talk) 20:36, 12 June 2009 (UTC)==Fred Hoyle Page== Right then, where to start? Basically I want to completely restructure the page. Add in section for Academic Career. Then spit up his research. 'Rejection of the Big Bang' is certainly misleading: it should be titled 'Steady State Theory'. There is also a significant amount of contemporary controversy concerning Hubble's RedShifts that is not included in the article. Again 'Rejection of Chemical Evolution' is misleading - the point is that he had an alternative theory and that resulted in rejection of others, his main thesis was that he had another theory he felt was more satifactory. Think these are good ideas? Bittersweetsmile (talk) 17:35, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Ah yes - always wonderered what Sandbox was for! Will do, can I get back to you if needs be? Bittersweetsmile (talk) 18:04, 12 June

'Cite web source'

Lot's of boxes it asks you to fill in. What ones are essential and what ones are pretty unnecessary? Cheers,Bittersweetsmile (talk) 20:36, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the medal ;) Thanks to your reftools all the citations go nicely into 1abcd form. I'm going to call the number at the beginning (in this example 1) the 'base citation'. The question: I might use the same source a lot througout the article. Should the same 'base citation' be carried throughout the whole article or should there be a new 'base citation' for each section of the article? Cheers! Bittersweetsmile (talk) 12:39, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Well I've done a bit as you can see from my sandbox . But when I want to put all my edits into the main article won't a bot just revert back all my changes as there will be a lot of them? Cheers, Bittersweetsmile (talk) 20:32, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: Response to 'Will a bot revert my changes to Hoyle article'

Well congrats Sensei. Probably will do it over the weekend. A question: for writing about a scientific issue are journalistic news articles (not necessarily written by a scientist) acceptable as sources or is an established 'scientific' journal/paper required? Thanks Bittersweetsmile (talk) 20:56, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

News as scientific source

But I couldn't have given him the advice without you having given it to me beforehand! So thank you for adopting me ;) The news sources are the Telegraph, Guardian and New York Times (but the nytimes has been dodgy in the past so I'll probably try and back that one up). RE: A thought

I nearly missed that in the middle of the DYK/ITN spam. Thank you for your confidence; it is very heartwarming. I have considered it, occasionally people have expressed surprise that I'm not. Which is a bit of a surprise really as I don't think I do very much more than a lot of people. ITN needs more admins so that would be my main reason I suppose. But the ITNs are being posted these days, it was only when the admins disappeared, went on holiday or suffered some cruel twist of fate that ITN had a true lack of admins. And I can only recall one occasion in the past six months when I had to go elsewhere when they were all absent or distracted in some way or another. So they seem to be managing fine. I think. I wonder if several DYKs, ITNs, etc. are good enough anyway... I wouldn't vote against someone based upon that but it doesn't mean everyone else is of the same school of thought. Was it something adminworthy/adminlike I did that provoked this thought? --candlewicke 01:40, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

OK, I haven't/won't rule it out. :-) Conversations with Eamon Dunphy and Miriam Meets is a good idea... I recall using a link to that show for Sammy Leslie...
