Film article names edit

Hi Cartick,

I see you have moved Kalidas (1931 Film)‎ to Kalidas (film). My bad - I didn't see the older stub when i created the new article and redirected the older article to the newer one. Is there a standard to follow while naming film articles? i see some of them are named like Kalidas (Tamil Film) or Kalidas (Film) or just Kalidas or Kalidas (film). I plan to create a few more on the old tamil films. Should i add (Film) to all titles or just for only those who need disambiguation? Sodabottle (talk) 04:37, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

TN assembly edit

Ya if that's easier. But just make sure that it reflects the current MLAs for each constituencies, since it has changed a lot since 2006.Nader85021 (talk) 04:16, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

newly delimited constituencies edit

I see your point. The only problem is its hard to see which ones are new constituents which ones are old. I tried searching, but couldn't find much in terms of photos on flickr or picassa. Haven't been able to find some other of her early concert pics that ought to be in public domain either. Hoping to take this to GA soon, after actually writing something in the article, so a couple of photos would definitely help. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 03:15, 20 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category question edit

Since you're the politics cats guy, is there any reason to have this newly created Category:Former Nominated Rajya Sabha members? It was split off from the main one last week. It doesn't read well IMO, but I'm also wondering on the need for it. At any time there's no more than six current members, so why have only the current ones on the main and the former on the sub-cat, if at all, shouldn't it be the other way round? cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 04:15, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

the number of articles in both categories being very few, i understand ur concern. Nevertheless, i have to admit that it adds a level of clarity. --CarTick 04:25, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
What about a rename? Does it read correctly to you? I'm finding the Former + nominated qualification at the start a bit difficult, but maybe it's just me. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 04:29, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

re dyk hook for Sathyavani Muthu edit

At dyk hook for Sathyavani Muthu, I could not find the hook information in the source given. Could you point it out? Thanks! —mattisse (Talk) 18:24, 5 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have added this clarification in the hook - The citation says "It (admk) was the first Dravidian party to join power actively when its representatives Satyavani Muthu and Bala Pazhanoor were inducted into the Charan Singh ministry three decades ago in 1979." In Tamil Nadu politics, non-congress parties are all Dravidian parties and in 1979, ADMK became the first non congress Tamil Nadu party to join the Union Government. ergo. Satyavani Muthu and Bala Pazhanoor are the first two non INC members from TN to serve as an Union Ministers in India--Sodabottle (talk) 18:36, 5 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

how many articles in your opinion an article has to be linked from in order not to be an orphan. --CarTick 02:39, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The fact that the article is an orphan is not based on my opinion, but on official Wikipedia policy. Fewer than three non-redirect, article incoming links. While the two incoming links are most likely sufficient, at least one more would be useful. Then the {{orphan}} tag can be removed. Feel free to contact me again if you have any more questions. Government=Country? edit

Hi CarTick. Just a quick question. I bumped into this which said India had initially, under Indira Gandhi[4][5]and later under Rajiv Gandhi, began to sympathize …. Here I reckon we have to read this as Indian union government had initially, under Indira Gandhi[4][5]and later under Rajiv Gandhi, began to sympathize… rather than Indian people had initially, under Indira Gandhi[4][5]and later under Rajiv Gandhi, began to sympathize …. Is there any norm that equates the ruling government to the country itself? I'm not trying to be fussy, but just plain curious. Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 08:59, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

BTW why is does your user space say that you are an MLA? Are you? Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 12:54, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, most information are made consistent with Wikipedia entries. It might be wrong in some cases, but its not a deal to sort that out as and when we get the info. BTW, the entire tree looks too long and may not fit into any article when we think about it. A picture like File:St_Thomas_Christians_divisions.png might be a better idea, although it can't be have links to specific entries. Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 14:40, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
you are right. it can become a stand alone article or fit into Dravidian parties at the least. on the other hand, if we can convert it into an image file, we could add it everywhere we want. christian divisions file looks like a good model. but will take some of your time. --CarTick 15:50, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

if u read the post carefully, you would have noticed that I have given up on my attempt. Besides, I disagree with you that we need the consent of the wider wikipedia community. As far as i can tell, he is not under any ban or block. --CarTick 17:53, 11 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
You don't seem to be getting it. If you considered I did read it carefully, you'd realise I'd paid most particular attention to where you said "unless i get more positive responses." [emphasis added] We haven't often set up an initiative to welcome back other (often more) prolific contributors who retired from the project, if ever - if we did, there might not have been an issue here. But it doesn't seem likely, given the wider community's extremely dim view on this issue, and you did not disclose such material facts, despite being aware of them. Also, the wider community has not ever blocked or banned an account who is so inactive as far as I'm aware - the community's refusal to take moot actions does not mean that there are no issues with an editor returning. I have no view on your proposal with respect to Nichalp, but it's not so much a consent issue, as it is avoiding needless controversial drama for the WikiProject (noticeboard). I have no idea why you didn't/don't feel ready to approach the wider community, but I do hope you'll put some more thought into your future comments. In any case, given that you seem to have clarified that you have given up on your attempt altogether, and the "unless" clause appears to be poorly chosen, I'll collapse my criticism also. Ncmvocalist (talk) 11:26, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Remember he was never blocked. It was only his sock who was blocked. personally, i dont care if Nichalp gets back or not. I dont think u read my post properly, as far as i can tell, u just read it now and are trying to defend yourself with some lame excuse. why should "unless" bother you much, will you have been concerned if more people responded positively? since he is not banned, i dont think a wider community discussion is necessary. I wouldnt be worried about drama as every such issue in wikipedia has always attracted more or less drama. it is a bad idea you closed the discussion before allowing others to participate or let the discussion become stale. --CarTick 12:57, 12 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh I have no doubt you wouldn't care about drama - that much is clear from your poor handling of this entire matter, and your mindbogglingly bad faith assumption about lame excuses that seems to be begging for an uncivil response. You're still not getting it, and I hope it's merely because I didn't give you enough time to let it sink in - if not, and, you're still going to be hell bent on learning it the hard way one day, then I bid you good luck! WP:AWB usage edit

Hi, Pls help on the usage of AWB for correcting redirects. Pls refer to here and here. — Thaejas (talk) 06:17, 28 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have never fixed redirects using AWB. for some reason, I am not able to login to my AWB. But generally, you are rigtht, you need to save your changes. --CarTick 13:16, 28 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Can you pls tell me how to move pages (articles) to new titles using AWB? The Move button in Start tab is not enabled in the software. Is this feature available only for admins? If so, then we need to update the user manual accly.—Thaejas (talk) 09:03, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I dont see how AWB can be useful for moving pages. --CarTick 14:22, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Current political leaders from TN edit

Hi Cartick,

Hope all is well. Been a while since I really acted on something serious on here. I am not sure what is the current priority going on with you and our precious asset (Sodabottle). I have a feeling that the state of articles on current TN politicians are really bad. Given that the current ones get more readers, shouldn't we sort that out, atleast to a near GA? Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 08:46, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hee hee. I am taking a voluntary break from politics in wikipedia :-). Concentrating on Literature and History instead. We had a plan to move from elections to legislatures to parties and then on to biographies. Currently only elections, legislatures and Justice Party have been done. DMK/ADMK is the next choice. I plan to return to politics after the semmozhi maanadu (where hopefully i will get more pictures of current leaders and convince beauracrats to open up public information archive to wikipedia).--Sodabottle (talk) 08:59, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
The plan to biographies last was to gather the low hanging fruit first - elections are easy; legislatures easier, parties tough and Biographies are downright nasty (atleast to me) :-).--Sodabottle (talk) 09:00, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
How have u been. well, just using my spare time with articles that dont need much thinking. planning to finish two more lists, Birds of Tamil Nadu and Chennai. But I am willing to work with you on the articles you and Sodabottle outlined. Let us decide on one and start. I would choose MK to begin with, but i am open.
To sodabottle, please take as many as photos as possible, even if you dont know who it is. we can figure out later.   i created a lot of MLA stubs and i will be happy to fill half of them with photos. --CarTick 12:35, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah taking photographs is a good thing. I wasted my last stay at Chepauk campus and being stuck in trafic. BTW: I wish they had some links on the home page of semmozhi maanadu. Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 16:16, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

List of birds of Tamil Nadu edit

CarTick:

Nice job on your recent new work List of birds of Tamil Nadu. Thanks for your note pointing out the discrepancy on number of Tamil Nadu bird species. I got the number 454 from: Tamil Nadu Forest Department Where they got it I don't know. How many species are in M. A. Badshah, Checklist of birds of Tamil Nadu? Perhaps User:Shyamal, Wikipedia resident authority on South Indian birds can give some clarification? Marcus334 (talk) 16:30, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Badshah seems to have a smaller number. dont remember well. But this article talks about approximately 500 species. They probably got that number from Forest department website. apparently, Ratnam's book seems incomplete. But I am going to assume getting an accurate number is not going to be busy. --CarTick 19:39, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

About political parties in India edit

Hello, CarTick

I would kindly draw your attention about List of political parties in India and List of recognised political parties in India. User Soman and User Viplovecomm are reverting my edits because they think that in India there isn't two national political parties like INC & BJP, as a result they had put other smaller political parties like CPI(M), RJD or SP into national category. But in my view INC & BJP are the two parties who achieved their national status more of all they ruled in India but my friend user aren't agreeing with please take a part of this complex discussion.--Kkm010as© 10:33, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I understand the spirit of your argument. but, by definition of what a national party is in India (just vaguely remember, couldnt find it now), CPM is definitely one and i believe other mentioned parties are too. u dont have much chance winning this, my honest opinion. --CarTick 12:31, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
By national i mean a party whose dominance is across every states and it has ruled for complete 5 years in center level. Whereas parties like CPI, RJD or SP they failed to complete there tenure in 1998 more over there presence are very limited take RJD whose political influence is only in bihar and ruled for many year. Therefore pls come to the talk page and discuss about this complex issue. I wonder how parties like NCP or BSP got there national tag. It is utterly ridiculous.--Kkm010as© 14:51, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Regarding "I wonder how parties like NCP or BSP got there national tag", that's a question to direct the the Election Commission of India. 'National Party' has a specific meaning in Indian politics, it is a formal recognition granted by the Election Commission. That the criteria should be "ruled for complete 5 years" is entirely arbitrary. Why 5 years, why not ten years? As per size, CPI(M) has 800,000+ members and governs 3 states with a combined population of over 110 million in three separate regions of the country. That is not small, by any standards. --Soman (talk) 15:18, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
KKM, your criteria is arbitrary. Even going by it, the BJP has never governed at centre for five years - it was the NDA coalition that ruled not BJP alone. As Soman points out, ECI gives the "national party" based on If a political party is treated as a recognised political party in four or more States, it shall be known as a `National Party’ throughout the whole of India, but only so long as that political party continues to fulfill thereafter the conditions for recognition in four or more States on the results of any subsequent general election either to the House of the People or to the Legislative Assembly of any State. As ECI is the governing body here why should we differ and invent a whole set of criteria on our own?--Sodabottle (talk) 15:41, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

This link defines the criteria for recognised regional party. I am wondering what are the four states in which RJP, BSP and NCP satisfy this criteria. --CarTick 19:45, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

RJD fulfills criteria (A) in the Lok Sabha election in Bihar (4 MPs elected), criteria (B) in Manipur (6.67% of votes in last state election), NCP fulfills criteria (A) in the Lok Sabha election in Maharashtra and Meghalaya, criteria (A) in the last Arunachal Pradesh state election, criteria (B) in Manipur (8% in last state election). --Soman (talk) 20:25, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Look guys if think I'm talking anything bullshit, well whatever u wish pursue it. But its baffling and appalling that parties like RJD and BSP got there national tag. Anyway thanks to all who involve in this discussion. It looks everybody has finally agreed to put all the parties national parties. Thanks Cheer-up--Kkm010as© 14:51, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
less frustration please KKM. We win some. we lose some.--Sodabottle (talk) 14:56, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
UR right! I'm not frustrated. Its hard for me to digest.--Kkm010as© 15:45, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree with you KKM. it is ridiculous how these little parties with no broader national agenda (other than maybe to become Prime Minister one day) can be called national parties. but that is the way it is. it is not your mistake. take it easy. --CarTick 15:51, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Request for Review - Brahmadesam (Villupuram) edit

As you are from TN, i felt it's better to approach you & Sodabottle.

  1. Can you tell me how can i redirect search result of Brahmadesam to Brahmadesam_(disambiguation). Because whenever i type as Brahmadesam it is straight away directed to Brahmadesam of Ambasamudram Taluk of Thirunelveli District in Tamilnadu which is not supposed to happen.
  2. Can you review the article & provide rating for it. As it is a article on village who's name has not reached media, i had lot of difficulty in gathering references for the article. I have put my best to bring the article to this stage. Pls help me in this regard. Thank you once again!!Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 05:23, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wild Animals of India edit

I've a book titled "The book of Indian Animals" by SH Prater which contains useful information about many animals of India including rare species like The Nilgiri Langur,Golden Langur,Clouded Leopard etc.Plus I've some good sources by renowned authors like EP Gee.Since you have done a good job regarding birds,I consider taking your help in improving these articles.

Raghavan(Talk) 04:33, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much. I would really like that. I am very glad we have an editor from India interested in animals. pls remember List of mammals of India exists already. I am not sure if the number of mammals found in Tamil Nadu would justify a similarly titled List of mammals of Tamil Nadu though it will be very useful. Regardless, any help from you improving articles about animals found in India will be much appreciated.
Besides, I would ask a favour from you. typical wikipedia style favour, no commitment to delivery required. List of birds of Tamil Nadu would like to have more pictures. Even some of the common birds are missing. I am not in India and K. Mohan Raj has been the soul contributor so far. --CarTick 12:10, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

National Waterway 4 edit

Hi Karthick, i have created a article titled National Waterway 4 (NW-4). I have just posted a Draft article on WP. I request your Comments / Feedback to improve as well as to make the article live on WP. With the Response i'll focus on 5 Other National Waterways in India. Thank you . ----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 07:58, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Raj. i like the article. I am positive the article itself is good to go in the main page. I have some issues though. same information repeats in different sections. also, the article seems to have a lot of extraneous information. I have the following suggestions to name a few.
  1. Details of NW 1-5 in Evolution section is not necessary. it can be moved to the main waterways article
  2. Geography and Structure can be merged into a single section as "Route"
  3. Traffic and Natural barrier can be brought under Potential benefits header

It also needs to be clarified what is the use of a waterway which runs mostly along the coast especially between Pondicherry and Pedaganjam. --CarTick 11:19, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Me too like this very much :-)--Sodabottle (talk) 13:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
If I am not wrong this is the same canal that supplies Chennai its drinking water as part of Telugu Ganga Project.-Raghavan(Talk) 14:20, 13 August 2010 (UTC).Reply
Yeah, it was built by the Governor, the Duke of Buckingham in 1878 to tackle the famine of Madras people. Check out Buckingham Canal to know more. ----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 04:25, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I am not sure. the main reason these waterways being developed is for transport. --CarTick 00:22, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Guys. Sorry for the delay in reply.I was out of station. Karthick thanks for all your suggestion and i will consider all those for fine tuning the article. Regarding your question of Why Waterway along the Coast.
  • Distance between Rajahmundry & Kakinada Port (Nearest Port) - 64 k.m
  • Distance between Rajahmundry & Godavari River (Nearest Waterway) - 0.2 k.m
  • Distance between Singareni Collieries Company Coal Mines in Adilabad District, Khamam District & Vishakapatnam / Kakinada Port - More than 500 k.m
  • Distance between Singareni Collieries Company Coal Mines & Godavari River (Nearest Waterway) - Less than 10k.m
  • Distance Between ITC Bhadrachalam Paper mill & Kakinada Port (Nearest Port)- More than 500 k.m
  • Distance Between ITC Bhadrachalam Paper mill & Godavari River (Nearest Waterway)- less than 5k.m
Similarly scale the length of potential business hub mentioned in the article to Nearest Port & nearest Waterway whcih will answer the question why Coastal Waterway.
In terms of cost, setting up a New port (Minor/Captive port)costs between 800 Crores to 2000 Crores per Port. If we talk about a Major port then the cost will be 2 to 3 times higher.Cost of Setting up Minor Port
As per the Detailed Project Report of WAPCOS, cost for setting 12 terminals will be 242 Crores. Total Development cost of the entire stretch of NW-4 including widening of canal, Dredging, Excavation, Bank protection, Construction & Repair of locks, Modification of bridges & roads, Navigational aids and setting up of IWT terminals will be around 1500 Crores only.
Hi Raghavan, this canal is not the one which supplies Chennai its drinking water. The condition of this canal is really pathetic. This Photo of Buckingham Canal near Central Station tells you whether the water is Potable or not. Also check out 1920 Photo of Buckingham Canal.----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 07:02, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Raj, thanks for all the info. I didnt know Singareni Collieries Company Coal Mines is that influential? --CarTick 13:19, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Singareni Colleries Company is significantly notable company in the Coal Industry which explores Coal reserves in four districts of AP. The company is like Indian Oil company in Oil Industry. Check out the details here. following are the details of the company.
Employee strength - 68,451
Total number of Mines - Under Ground - 36 : Opencast - 14
Production in 2009-10 - 50.42 Million tonnes
Think about the transportation of 50 Million tonnes of Coal. Which one is Environment friendly, less expensive - Road (or) Railways (or) Waterways. ---Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 05:08, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
