Vandalism

You are the one who is vandalising that page. I left a summary stating that there is a discussion going on which is already pointing toward keeping it as English, rather than British. You should contribute to that before making any conclusions as to what it should say yourself, and I am going to revert your last edit, seeing as it originally said English and should not be changed unless a consensus is reached on the discussion pointing towards that. Don't leave such stupid messages on my talk page. 82.1.157.16 (talk) 13:37, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Captain, the IP above has a very long history of disruptive editing on nationalist lines, and a block log to match. I'll give a "heads up" to some of the admins who have blocked him previously. DuncanHill (talk) 13:38, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I am the author of the article Afisha Picnic. It is my first article on Wikipedia, however I plan to write a few more, as I am writing a thesis on Moscow based mass media for young people and their way of existance. Hello, I left a message on your talk page in response to this edit, I warned you with the incorrect template. The template was meant to warn you against vandalism, that page specifically warns against editing the pronunciation. If you were trying to correct previous vandalism by another user then I apologise, a quick way of doing this is to press the "undo" button. But if you were vandalising, and you continue to do so, you will end up blocked. Best regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 19:06, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Abuse of rollback

Captain-n00dle, rollback was granted to you solely for the purposes of reverting blatant vandalism, which this most certainly was not. Please be more careful in future or this privelege will be revoked. 86.41.61.203 (talk) 19:35, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

True however, removing content without providing an explanation, or even an edit summary can be considered vandalism. The page layout is better with this heading as it makes reading and finding relevant information easier. I stand by my rollback, best regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 19:38, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Hydatid Sand

That's a valid redirect as some people may type it in using a capital. Aned you might want to explain what Hydatid sand is. I read the sentence, at first, as being a sign that you would hang/mount on an x-ray machine. Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 12:30, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Color me puzzled.

Can you explain why you reverted my change here?I don't think we want the category page showing up as a move request. While we have a long way to go to remove the remaining requests, at some time, I'd like to see the page empty.

BTW, thanks for the help at Requests for feedback. For the first time in some time, I don't feel like there is a daunting backlog there.--SPhilbrickT 19:09, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello! I do apologise! I did not realise that I was reverting your edit!
Although, using the {{tl}} template doesn't add the page to the category only using the template directly would. CAT:DRAFT was appearing, but I fixed that here. I hope that that made sense! Kindest regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 20:49, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
What I weird coincidence. I was just in a talk page interchange with another editor about that very issue on another page. I found a page listed in the category with had the {{tl}} on it, so I assumed it was a problem. Turns out there was a separate copy of {{move draft}} on the page, so my assumption was wrong. So you were right and I was wrong. But I'm keeping the cookie.:) --SPhilbrickT 20:58, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Its okay, we all learn and I'm glad you found the problem ^_^ You can keep the cookie because you are nice! Captain n00dle\Talk 21:01, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
p.s. I might upgrade you to a brownie if you like... but I'm still figuring how to draw one ;-)

{{MovedtoMainspace}}

I was just looking at Category:Requests to move a userspace draft and saw the reference to {{MovedtoMainspace}}. My first thought was - how it is it that I've visited this page over a hundred times and not seen that? As my wife might tell you, that fact isn't very surprising, but still, how did I miss it? So I checked the history and see you created it today. So I feel better.

Thanks, good work.

I started to make an edit to it, but decided I'd like to talk it through. One question that comes up at the help desk quite often is why can't I find my article in search? In many cases, the answer is because you created it/moved it today, and it takes some time to show up in search. As a consequence, my poor man's template sample here includes the boilerplate language:

Please note, if you try to search for it using the search option, it always takes some time, a few hours to a day, for it to show up in search.

I'd like to either make this a standard part of the language, or if you think it might not always be appropriate, an optional field. We can also debate the exact wording.--SPhilbrickT 21:41, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Sounds good, how about this proposal: User:Captain-n00dle/Sandbox3
By the way, did the documentation make sense? I find that it makes sense to myself but no one else knows what I'm smoking ^_^
Captain n00dle\Talk 22:09, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Quick work.
I confess, my first reaction was "what's the difference"? So I'm mildly worried that the text size is too small. I'll make you a deal though, let's go with this, and if we get questions about why they can't find their new article, I get to say "I told you so" and we discuss how to make it more prominent.
I hadn't seen that language before, so I learned something new. I had been exchanging messages with the developer, when the indexing got stuck last week, so I knew the answer, but I hadn't realized it was written down.
I would like to link directly to the subsection. I tried and failed here, so I left a message here. Maybe I did something wrong and you can figure it out.
Oh, the documentation did make sense, although I wasn't sure how the template would know the difference between the new and old location, oops, nevermind, just figure it out. If I want to be anal, and yes, sometimes I want to be, the term "article" is ambiguous, so I would use "oldarticle=old-article-location" as the last parameter, but that's a detail.--SPhilbrickT 22:38, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough, I did set the font size to "smaller" so I could remove that easily if needed. I'm not sure what you mean by language? Do you mean the #hash links?
I've linked directly to the (3rd level) section (Help:Searching#Delay) you can see my reply here: Help_talk:Searching#Is it OK it just uses a template.
I might update the template to use "article" or "oldarticle" and correct the documentation Captain n00dle\Talk 23:28, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
By "language" I simply meant that I knew the issue, but hadn't actually seen that page. Not surprising, there are a lot of pages at this place.--SPhilbrickT 23:45, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

<-Morning. I like the addition of the link suggestion. I don't want the list to be too long, as I think some editors are overwhelmed by the long lists in some welcome messages, so want to make sure we don't make the same mistake.

Despite that fear, I have one other potential addition. In theory, editors are not supposed to add categories in user space, but should as soon as they move to main space. However, I note that many do add categories in advance. What I would like is an optional sentence, triggered by an option |CAT, which if present, adds a sentence reminding them to add categories. Then the editor moving the page can look for categories, use the standard message if they already have cats and add the cat parameter if there are no cats. What do you think? --SPhilbrickT 10:16, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Sounds good! I might add two parameters, one to include a basic message about cats and one to include suggested categories. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.8.152.207 (talk) 10:42, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Feedback needed on feedback idea

To GB fan,Fetchcomms, Chzz and Captain-n00dle

I'd like some feedback on a thought I have to address most of the remaining items in Category:Requests to move a userspace draft. I could be bold and just do it, but I'd like some reaction from some of the more experienced contributors to Requests for feedback.

As background, I stumbled across the Category about three weeks ago. It contained 242 requests, some going back to November. (This discovery is what prompted me to work on a proposal for a Feedback Patrol.) I've been working on cleaning out the backlog, and have it under 75 at the moment. The good news is that over 170 have been addressed, either by moving when appropriate, or a message to the editor when substantial work is needed prior to a move. The bad news is that I worked on the list with a triage mentality, moving the ones that were in good shape, sending a notice to the ones that were in very bad shape, and passing on ones where I wasn't quite sure how to respond, so the ones left are a little trickier than the ones I've processed.

In many cases, the ones left have some promise, but need some attention regarding notability and other issues. However, in many cases, the request is quite dated. If the editors last edit is a few months old, I don't see it as a good use of resources to spend time assessing notability if the editor is no longer interested in contributing. (Obviously, if you read the draft and want to work on it personally, you can and should, but in many cases, if the original editor isn't going to help, there's not much point in working on it.)

My suggestion is to pick a cutoff date, say one month, and if there have been no edits within the last month, send a note to the editor and ask if they are still interested. (Anything more recent should be addressed on an individual basis.)

Sample message:

You asked that userspace draft be moved into article space. We apologize for the extreme delay in responding to this request. We believe there are some issues that need to be addressed before moving this draft, however, we would like to make sure you are still interested in working on this before we review it in detail. In the mean time, we will remove the {{move draft}} request. Please respond if you want the review completed, either by replacing the {{move draft}} template, by posting a note at my talk page, or by posting a request at Requests for feedback.

--SPhilbrickT 11:57, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Good plan, I'm not sure how else I can contribute! :-/ Captain n00dle\Talk 14:54, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
That's really all I need. On occasion I have what seems like a good idea, and I'll run it by someone, who will point out either that:
  • It's a terrible idea, because I didn't consider X, or
  • It's a great idea, but already exists, didn't you read page Y?
You did neither, so I'm going to run with it.--SPhilbrickT 19:00, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

more help please

Hi Captain,

Thanks for helping me with my first page. I think what I did wrong was entering URL links to all the Wikipedia entries that I just wanted to have appear as hyperlinks within my entry (Rescue Chocolate). So now instead of hyperlinks, I have references to other wikipedia entries, and my references at the bottom don't match the numbers within the entry. How do I undo all that and then do it right?

Best, Bookisha (talk) 12:36, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Susan

Feedback from Captain n00dle\Talk:

Hello! If you need to undo anything, there is an undo button on the history page of the article here
I think you are a little confused about references, this is an internal link
The code looks like this:
[[Peppermint|this is an internal link]]
And this statement is referenced[1]
And this statement is referenced<ref>"States prohibiting or allowing breed specific
ordinances". American Veterinary Medical Association. October 2007.</ref>
And this is an external link
[http://www.example.com/ And this is an external link]
This is a tool to help you: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/makeref.php
And you can always have a look at the code used on other pages. This page is not a very good article, but shows you the code
I hope that helps! Best regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 13:19, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

User:StopAbuseOfMothers

Hi. User:StopAbuseOfMothers created a fairly bad attack page a while back which I then tagged the page for deletion as an attack page and left the bog-standard warning template for the creation of attack pages on User:StopAbuseOfMothers talk page. The article was then deleted and Oversighted(?). User:StopAbuseOfMothers was then immediately blocked indef. User:StopAbuseOfMothers is now questioning the justification of the block due to the phrasing on the warning template that I used, notably this phrasing: Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images, especially those in violation of our biographies of living persons policy, will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. The user is adamant that the block was un-needed due to the fact that they only made one attack page and was given to them out of vengeance or as a personal attack on them as an individual because of the username they chose. If you have any further questions feel free to ask. Cheers, Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 18:41, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

IPA for xerophthalmia

Hi, and thanks for your message. I have added IPA and recorded an audio pronunciation for the article. The IPA matches the pronunciation, which is British English Received Pronunciation; this will be slightly different from the rendering for US or other accents. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 18:49, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Wow that's brilliant! Thank you! I've had to learn about it and was having real difficulty pronouncing the thing, so I thought other users might be having the same problem! Captain n00dle\Talk 18:55, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it's not the most intuitive word ever; the stress is in a strange place (third syllable) and the "o" sound looks like it should be a long vowel. The "phth" combination is also awkward; pronouncing the "ph" as "p" rather than "f" is often considered acceptable as well (diphtheria is the commonest example of this). Drop me a note if you see any more words/names that could benefit from IPA and audio. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 23:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Captian Noodle

I logged in to begin actioning the editing suggestions made for my page Drug Addicts Anonymous today to find that it has been deleted. I'm quite upset - i put a lot of work into it and the editing was very easy to do, just a matter of needing the time. I had no warning of deletion - youo may remember posting yourself somewhere that although a physical tag was left on the page you couldnt find an instance of its mention for speedy deletion anywhere where the active instruction is listed.

Passiflora flavicarpa

Apart from all the other problems with the "Singapore tropical fruit editor", it seems that Passiflora flavicarpa is not a suitable subject for an article, being a taxonomic synonym of Passiflora edulis. One could make a case for Yellow Granadilla, but for the time being it's probably better treated on the Passiflora edulis page. Lavateraguy (talk) 17:08, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

If you mean that it is the same thing with a different name, then why not leave the user a message telling him that to have this article moved to the mainspace: User:Captain-n00dle/draft he has to prove with reliable references that they are different / how they are different? I already had, before dropping the above note to you. My explanation of what a taxonomic synonym is got lost in an edit clash with your last edit, but you seem to have the gist - "same thing with a different name". Lavateraguy (talk) 17:26, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

You can edit the whole page by clicking the edit tab right at the top, that includes all the sections.
You can find the feedback here Wikipedia:FEED#Drug Addicts Anonymous.
You only get a yellow bar at the top if someone changes your talk page. But I keep checking your talkpage, so you can just reply there. As a rule, if someone leaves a message on your talk page, reply there unless they ask you to reply on theirs. If you leave a reply you can always add {{Talkback|101Bullets}} to their talk pages which tells them that you've replied.
Hope that helps! Captain n00dle\Talk 05:30, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Feedback - please help me out

Re. WP:FEED, new system

I think you've probably seen my comments on the talk page, about how we need to restructure the feedback system so that we have one page for each day, we transclude the most recent days on the main page, set up navigation, move the current requests across, add a box at the top showing the 'oldest outstanding requests', etc etc.

This really is desperately needed; the volume of requests now makes for a VERY long page, and archiving is not the best method at all; it can confuse new users, when their feedback 'disappears', etc. With a page-per-day, the links to their feedback would always remain - so we could alert them with a link on their talk page, and it won't matter if they check in 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year - their feedback will still be there.

I've had a 'demo' of it set up, and got a bit of help with the templates to auto-transclude the most recent days, etc - please look at User:Chzz/Wikipedia:Requests for feedback - please look also at a 'demo' day, User:Chzz/Wikipedia:Requests for feedback, and the nav page, User:Chzz/Wikipedia:Requests for feedback/navigation.

The demo isn't quite perfect, but to be honest, if we wait until it is, nothing will happen. We need to boldly implement it.

To do that, first of all, we need to clear things.

So, can you please help me by moving any and all feedback into the archive, and tell the users with a note, something like this one.

The move-over to the new method will be much easier if we clear things down.

I'm going to ask others for help, and try to get help with the transclusions stuff too.

Sorry this is a bit of a long message; I think it's important to sort this out, ASAP - and I need help with it.

Thanks,  Chzz  ►  03:41, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Update - This has now happened; there is no need to archive anything, any more. Now there are separate pages for each day, we no longer need to move old requests into a separate archive.
The main WP:FEED page will automatically just show the past few days.
If you can, please check over everything, because I'm sure there are lots of mistakes that need sorting out. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  12:38, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

We spoke back in June and you helped me out with my page. I was wondering if you could help me to make sure that all of my copyrights are okay. Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sesslerdan (talkcontribs) 04:11, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Seasons Greetings

Feedback - large increase in requests

The graph says it all, really; massive increase since we cleared the backlog and introduced a bit better system. As I've said before, it is a 'victim of its own success', I think. Currently, it is pretty backlogged.

Quite a few get missed, as you can see if you flick through the archives - but I don't know what we can do about that, really, other than hope more people give feedback.

The long-term solution would be to keep these editors; so many come to just create one article, and are never heard of again; if just a few of those stayed, and started giving feedback, then we'd have a more workable system.

I suggest discussion in this WT:FEED section. Cheers!

(I've send this message out to a small number of people that I think/hope will be interested; people who have given feedback, etc. if wrong, apologies, let me know.)

Happy 10/10/10

Double Ten Day is, really, unrelated—but we don't appear to have a cool pic for this one

I suppose I should've timed this message at 10:10:10 too, but frankly, I can't be arsed. You know how it is.

Did you know... that tenten in Japaense writing are a little wiggly thing, a bit like a quotation-mark, which makes e.g. "ka" (か) into "ga" (が) or "fu" (ふ) into "bu" (ぶ) ?

So, take time out to have a bit of a giggle.

All the best, and 10-10 'till we do it again.  Chzz  ►  08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Diverticulitis

Hello ... I am a fairly new Wikipedia user and decided to find help for my diverticulitis issues. When I first started having diverticulitis attacks, I could associate these attacks with eating peanuts, corn on the cob and cherry tomatoes (all favs of mine), therefore, my physician told me to avoid those foods. So my concern for other women looking for help with their diverticulitis condition such as I am, the information states that corn, nuts and seeds should not be an issue as stated by other medical articles that were referenced, but those articles also stated that this may not be true for some and that women may have other issues than men. I just do not want to see someone thinking they should keep trying to eat foods that will make them sick for days because a wikipedia submission has told them that these foods are good for them. I think there needs to be more referenced under the "Diet" part of the article, such as if you find you cannot eat nuts and seeds and should be known that some cannot, what can you eat. Maybe this is not the place for all that, but thank you for your time! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.49.5.152 (talk) 18:41, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Talk:Primate_basal_ganglia_system#Split

The proposed split appears to be appropriate. However, this is a specialised topic so the work should be done by somebody who understand the topic. I am also notifying User:Looie496 who supported the split, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Neuroscience and Wikipedia:WikiProject Primates. I am removing the split tag, as the request has now been responded to, and it is up to those closest to the topic to carry out the split. SilkTork *YES! 21:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

User Query About Page Titles

How can I change the page Title? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.140.106.140 (talk) 22:51, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello! And welcome to wikipedia, thank you for messaging me :-)
To change an article's title on wikipedia you have to be logged in, you can create an account here: Special:UserLogin
This has some other advantages too, like choosing a name, so that people can find you or talk to you easily.
Once you have logged in you can "move" a page after being a user for 4 days.
Because you haven't got a name, you will have to ask someone to move the page for you, I could do it if you tell me more about what the page is called, and the exact title that you want to change it too, or you could ask here
There are some guidelines on page titles if you would like to know more about what a title is meant to be.
Hope that I have helped! Kind regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 23:01, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

hello

I have some questions about the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_people especially the Persian part where Persian people are translated as ایرانیان ,Iranians . The term Iranian has a supra Ethnic meaning , while Persian means Fars or Parsi in Persian language, instead of using the term Iranian ,the term Fars should be replaced with Iranian .since Iranian is not ethnicity , Fars or Pars ,or Persian are ethnicities , Farsi speakers are Fars , just like Azerbaijani speakers are Azeri , or Kurdish speakers are Kurds . Iranic is neither a correct term to use since Iranic can be referred to a various group of Indo European speakers such as Baluchis , Gilaks, Mazanis ,Pakistanis ,Pashtuns etc ,however the Persian speakers are Persians who have the Farsi language as their mother tongue , Fars is correct term as their ethnicity ,not Iranian.

Block Appeal

{{Admin}} Hello, ProcseeBot has blocked my university's IP address (129.11.76.229) from editing because it believes that it is using an open proxy. Although I am not a network administrator at the University of Leeds, this is probably untrue. This is preventing me from editing pages even when I am logged in. Captain n00dle\Talk 13:08, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. The admin help template isn't needed - the unblock request itself is sufficient to bring it to the attention of the appropriate admins -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 13:12, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Ah, thanks Captain n00dle\Talk 13:14, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

On it. The bad news: I was able to use the proxy and perform an edit [1] so it's indeed working at the moment. -- Luk talk 13:09, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your assistance, I wonder if the University know that they are running an open proxy... perhaps I will give the IT department an email! Captain n00dle\Talk 13:13, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, that's really weird... You should be able to edit now:

IP block exempt

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions.

Note in particular that you are not permitted to use this newly-granted right to edit Wikipedia via anonymous proxies, or disruptively. If you do, or there is a serious concern of abuse, then the right may be removed by any administrator.

Appropriate usage and compliance with the policy may be checked periodically, due to the nature of block exemption, and block exemption will be removed when no longer needed (for example, when the block it is related to expires).

I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. -- Luk talk 13:26, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Oh thanks very much! Very useful, I've already added a referenced edit! (I shouldn't really have a smug face, but I do) Captain n00dle\Talk 13:29, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Discussion with Harold W. Attridge about deleted article Leon Biscraft Alexander

Why was my Article deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harold W. Attridge (talkcontribs) 19:23, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I find it understandable that you wish to discuss this. Unfortunately, it appeared that the article was a hoax, please allow me to explain why myself and another user (a wikipedia administrator) believed the article to be a hoax. Firstly, searching for "Leon Biscraft Alexander" doesn't return any news articles, or any search results on Google, and therefore it is difficult for us to verify that this person actually exists. Secondly, you copied a lot of the material from this page: http://www.carlosslim.com/responsabilidad_ing.html which is about another, completely different person.
Wikipedia is can only accept articles it can verify as true, and Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material.
Feel free to add your reply here. Thank you for your understanding, Kind regards, Captain n00dle\Talk 19:45, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Charles Wilfred Valentine

Could you please explain why removal of maintenace tags one day after an article has been created constitutes "vandalism" that might warrant a block? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:23, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello Capt'n!

My name is Joe and I was wondering if I could have your permission in using your image of the brachial plexus in my neurology resident handbook that I'm making. Please get back to me at joe_zac@hotmail.com.

Maria Sachs

I have made some well sourced edits this morning on this account. While I do not claim neutrality, I attempted to scrub the post of any opinion or unsubstantiated facts. I am sure Ms. Sachs daughter will be trying to scrub the truthful information that puts her mother in a bad light.

I am asking for assistance in peer reviewing my edits and maintaining neutrality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sunshine Disinfects (talkcontribs) 10:53, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello, the picture of the VIE is in the public domain so you can use it freely. The diagram you can use too but you have to say where you got it from in your presentation. Thanks, Captain n00dle\Talk 11:09, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

COI / Wiki Guidance

Previously I had asked for experienced editorial review on a wiki page as I was not sure the correct process and also because of my COI with the subject matter (wiki page, maria sachs, 2012). Since the page was reviewed by wiki editors, the material has not been modified or vandalized with political leaning content until this week. With the start of campaign season, the page was recently modified, and add'l information, much of it incorrect and not cited, was added to the page. For example, someone had changed the political affiliation to the opposing party, without any citation, as an act of vandalism. In addition, much of the content is non essential ( [2] ) , especially as the candidate is running for local office. The information so recently added falls under non-essential guidelines for a living persons biography. Because I have a COI and not as fluent in wiki processes to make meaningful edits, could you please review the page to check the neutrality and to keep it within wiki guidelines? Also, because it is a page that will probably be subject to additional vandalism, is there a way to have experienced wiki editors review changes to the page?
