Did it again...

Just got finished and had another near miss with someone else editing at the same time. What do you think? G'Night, i muchas gracias, Shir-El too (talk) 00:25, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

You bumped into a bot! ~*Snicker*~ ArielGold 08:11, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Or it bumped into me? Ah, the trials and tribulations of WP!. Seriously, I tried to reorganize family and early life per your suggestion. Re:Reply

Well, I found this creation in User creation log.--NAHID 09:30, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, as I said, user accounts are created by request, through Wikipedia account creation. Many editors and administrators have created accounts for others, but that does not mean they are their accounts. Take a look at WP:ACC to learn more. Cheers, ArielGold 09:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for welcoming me and for all your help!!! Do you take part in that adopt-a-user programme? Becuase I might want you to "adopt" me and teach me about editing here...--Alex Vogt (talk) 11:09, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

I actually do, yes! I have two adoptees at this time, one is rather "grown" and has mainly left my little nest, lol. If you'd like to read through the existing discussions, take a look at User:ArielGold/Adoption. It is usually best to try to have someone with your interests, if nothing more than to allow them to understand the areas you edit, but that is of course, not a requirement. However, be aware if your interests are political areas, or financial areas, I'd be of little help, lol. Take a gander at my userpage, of course, to see my own interests, and even if you don't want to do the adoption, feel free to ask me for any help or advice you like, I'm more than happy to help! ArielGold 11:12, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I will be wanting adoption, but not right now becuase I am VERY busy in reality. Thanks!!!--Alex Vogt (talk) 13:22, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

No worries :) Feel free to just holler here when you have any questions! ArielGold 13:23, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the help

Thanks for helping out on the Panayiotis_Jacovides page... the constant vandalism was getting annoying... Cryptk (talk) 13:57, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

oops... I kinda blanked a page myself, lol... I tried to undo my bad-edit, but I couldn't see any past revisions to go back to... seems like someone fixed it though... Cryptk (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 14:30, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, blanking isn't how to go about fixing a page, editing the entire page and removing information that is obviously non-encyclopedic is the way to go, in this particular case. Cheers, ArielGold 14:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
I think Cryptk is talking about your talk page, Ariel. It wasn't your fault Cryptk. The history was deleted, that's why you couldn't see previous revisions. They weren't there. The history was restored and your comment moved to the previous last revision, with the rest of the talk page. LaraLove 15:27, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Ohhhhhh Doh! Yeah, Cryptk, that wasn't you, lol. No worries! ArielGold 15:38, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

sorry

The other major contributing editor to the 747 article and I have slaved over references for a few days so that's why it was getting "old". It's never been so hard work! Archtransit (talk) 18:46, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Well, I was looking for a FAC I could help with, and I intended my comments on the article's talk page as nothing but an offer of help, and suggestions for three references. I will be honest, the resulting comments on your talk page were somewhat discouraging. I do hope the article reaches FA. Good luck with it! ArielGold 18:53, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
This is in disscusion now. It seems like the MOS suggestions (not hard requirements) and WP:Aviation and WP:Aircraft guidelines conflict. I thought the best way would be to discuss it at the WikiProject level for guidance rather than defy the WikiProject. The current layout was established long before I started editing. This should not be an issue that kills a FA. Once censensus is clear, all the aircraft articles can be fixed, if needed. Archtransit (talk) 19:06, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh, well, I'm sorry if I brought up a sensitive issue with the MOS suggestion, I didn't intend to. I do hope the 747 makes it to FA! Feel free to let me know if you would like any help, I'd be happy to lend a hand should you request it. Cheers! ArielGold 19:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

My Signature

Hey I wondered if you, or one of your many talk page helpers could help me. I just tried to change my signature to Tiddly-Tom (added in link to talk page). The code is:
<span style="border:2px solid #483C32;"><span style="color:#7FFF00;background:#483C32;">Tiddly<span style="color:#483C32;">-</span></span><span style="color:#DFFF00;background:#483C32;">Tom</span></span>
but my preferences will not accept it and it tells me to check html tags. I have looked at it and see nothing wrong, any ideas? Tiddly-Tom 21:09, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Hrmm, well, aside from the suggestion that you make the outline border 1 px, (your sig is so tall that it displaces the line height when you sign, lol) I think the problem might be the stray characters you have in there. Try this:

<span style="border:1px solid #483C32;"><span style="color:#7FFF00;background:#483C32;">Tiddly</span><span style="color:#DFFF00;background:#483C32;">Tom</span></span> Which produces:

TiddlyTom

Try that? ArielGold 21:20, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

And, hey! HI TOM!!!! Long time no see! ArielGold 21:21, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually, in the first link, your <font> tag doesn't have a closing tag. The code should read: <span style="border:1px solid #483C32;"><span style="color:#7FFF00;background:#483C32;">Tiddly</span><span style="color:#DFFF00;background:#483C32;">Tom</span></span> I (talk)23:32, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Also if you like to shorten it further, here is a reduced color depth version:
<span style="border:1px solid #433"><span style="color:#7F0;background:#433">Tiddly</span><span style="color:#DF0;background:#433">Tom</span></span>

Which produdes:TiddlyTom ▪◦▪≡SiREX≡Talk 01:02, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Woo hoo, thank you both! ArielGold 09:32, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Thank you very much, talk page helpers ;) The old one had a space in it, but in many ways I prefer it without ;) Thanks again, TiddlyTom 11:40, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh I didn't notice the space. You could easily put that in, by adding a space between Tiddly and Tom, but I actually like it without it, too! :D ArielGold 11:50, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
It goes all gammy if you do that: Tiddly Tom << See? :P TiddlyTom 14:08, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Hrmm, gimme a sec, that didn't work. ArielGold 14:11, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Try this:

<span style="border:1px solid #433"><span style="color:#7F0;background:#433">Tiddly</span><span style="color:#433;background:#433">-</span><span style="color:#DF0;background:#433">Tom</span></span>

Which produces: Tiddly-Tom Try that? ArielGold 14:18, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Thankies! Tiddly-Tom 14:56, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Opinion please

Today I wrote an article on Round O, South Carolina. Several hours after I moved it to the Main space an user/editor using only an IP address (68.61.19.188) made an update to it. Quote "getting its name from the characteristics of its first female inhabitants". Does this sound like a valid update (there were no references given) or just someone's sick mind? Thanks again, Rocketmaniac (talk) 03:42, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't understand what the phrase is even supposed to mean, so I can't tell if it is "sick" or not, but it was removed, so it would seem to just be garden variety IP vandalism. If it happens again, just undo it, and warn the editor by placing on their talk page. That is a standard first-level "test edit" notice, and just explains that testing shouldn't be done on articles, and gives a link to the sandbox. If you weren't aware, this sort of thing happens thousands of times an hour here, and there are people who spend hours a day keeping Wikipedia "clean". :) ArielGold 10:00, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Yea I am aware of the BS goes on involving this kind of people. I was just not sure if this was a real edit or not. The vandalism I've personally seen has been totally obvious. One thing I don't understand is why Wikipedia allows edits from people who don't register. Not saying that people can't create bogus user accounts and then vandalize articles, but at least there would be a little more info on the person. Oh well. I believe there is a special place in hell reserved for these kind of people. They'll have to answer for their behavior in the end. Oh yea, have you had any thoughts about how to "redo" my userpage? See ya lady, Rocketmaniac (talk) 11:26, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, while a good deal of nonconstructive edits come from anonymous editors, registered usernames also provide a fair amount of disruption at times. And, not all "vandalism" is obvious, in fact, some of it can be quite sneaky. There was an editor that edited a bunch of technical numbers in an article, completely changing the measurements, etc., and it was months before someone realized it, yet it was an obvious intentional addition of incorrect information. All that being said, there are some anonymous editors with literally thousands of excellent contributions, who have helped the project to an extreme degree, and for whatever reason, they simply prefer to not have a username. That's the beauty of Wikipedia, that in most cases, anyone can edit it. Consider if you were on vacation, and the only place you could get online was somewhere public, and not knowing what sort of spyware or adware or other software might be on the computer, would you feel comfortable typing in your account password? I wouldn't. So, you could still edit as an IP. I think that the good outweighs the bad, and that we have great tools in place, with the RCC feeds, the IRC feeds, other monitoring tools, and tools to quickly remove the disruption, that it is worth it in the end. As for that edit being "real", I'd say no, the way it was worded, which made no sense at all to me, and lacking sources, the removal is completely valid. (Thanks Sirex!) Oh, and your userpage, I guess I thought you were going to fix it, I didn't want to step on your toes, lol. I could maybe work up something in a subpage of mine though if you want, and if you liked it you could use it/modify it, etc. But I wouldn't use the tables you're using, you're using so many rows and columns for everything, and that's part of the problem. I'd just make boxes, and inside have the launch date/time centered, with line breaks. Much easier to handle that way lol. ArielGold 11:33, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
I see your point(s) about using IP addresses. I guess it's just that I've done enough edits now that I'm starting to see my work get hacked by these morons and it's ticking me off. You (figuratively, a person) takes the time to edit an article to make it better and then see someone added/delete stupid stuff. Maybe we could develop a system where when a hacker hacks an article, it sends a low voltage shock through his keyboard and zaps him. Then for each additional hack his does, the voltage is increased. More hacks, more shocks. Muwahahaha!
I normally wear steel toe boots, so don't worry about stepping my toes. Go for it. Rocketmaniac (talk) 15:06, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Heheheh. Most of the time it is just kids trying to waste time by not doing homework, lol. Don't stress it, just revert and warn ;) ArielGold 15:25, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

username question

Hello, Wikipedia user who sometimes addresses username issues. :) Is Geekbot100 okay? I came upon him whilst addressing CSDs. (Oh, P.S. I'll be watching you here. mwah ha ha!)--Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:37, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Generally any name with a "bot" in it (that isn't part of a real name, like longbottom) that is not an approved Wikipedia Bot account, should be a breach of WP:U, as it implies an automated account. ArielGold 14:39, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
And Hi Moonriddengirl! ArielGold 14:40, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Also, that article is recreated mere minutes after it was deleted, [1] ArielGold 14:42, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. And hi. :D I know; he not only recreated it, but brought it back with its speedy deletion notice intact. I figured I'd look at the username issue first and handle it all at once. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:58, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Squamous cell papilloma

Thanks for expanding that; I had like 10 things going on at once. I very much appreciate it! :) Regards, Keilana 23:58, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

No thanks necessary. All medical conditions are notable if they have refs available, as far as I know, and I'm not sure why a CSD tag was placed on it. There are hundreds of references out there to verify the condition, and it is extremely common, so it just needed a little expanding to give it some context. I'm happy to help. Nope can't. Too many people have asked you. You couldn't resist could you. One or two would have been fine but your loathsome vanity has foiled your nefarious plans. All the admins who've asked you, all of whom should be be desysopped, are obviously your socks. i noticed in their discovery history that u delted the page for their 4th album casue u said utube wastn offical source, they have now annouced it on their official site, would it be ok for me to re create the page now? Usedfan1989 (talk) 09:34, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're referring to. I have not deleted any pages, as that requires one to be an administrator, which I am not. Without a diff or two to explain what you're referring to, I'm afraid I cannot know what you're asking. ArielGold 09:42, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
I believe I can help. I think what's being asked about is this. The article was deleted on December 4th by Dreadstar. Usedfan1989, articles about future albums are frequently challenged and deleted. I believe that your best bet would be to include reference about it on the existing articles and wait to create the album article until either it exists or you can assemble material about it in reliable sources to show that its pending release is notable. At the very least, it should have a title. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:25, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Ahhhh, thank you Moonriddengirl! Yes, Usedfan, as Moonriddengirl explained, reliable sources need to be added to verify information, and speculation is not generally acceptable for an encyclopedia. If the band announced it on their official site (which is not a reliable third-party source), then the media should pick up on it soon, and reliable sources will be available. Hope that helps explain things! ArielGold 13:40, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Happy if I can help. In fact, as often as you help me, it's the least I can do. :D --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:52, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

RFA?

Hello Ariel. Just wondering if you'd be interested in stepping up your outstanding work here on Wikipedia by having access to the admin tools. If so, and if should you be needing a nominator for an RFA, I hereby offer myself for the task. :-) Best regards, Húsönd 17:36, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey, take a number! I think you're approximately the 18743rd person to offer to nominate Ariel... (if it makes you feel any better, I'm #18739). I think her RfA could easily make WP:100, judging from the nomination offers alone... EVula // talk // // 17:42, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
I've never offered to nominate her, but I am patiently waiting to support. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:47, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Ariel, I would personally reccomend accepting a nomination from husond. He was my nominator. As much as I would like to nomiante, I can settle for supporting a nomination from Husond. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:49, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
<pile on> I recommend accepting it too. I can say that you'd be an excellent sysop. </pile on>  Animum (talk) 19:05, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
I think her secret plan is to reach WP:100 in nomination offers alone. :-) henriktalk 19:29, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
~*Laugh*~ I don't think that's possible, but thanks for the encouragement, dear Henrik. Husond, thank you so much for your kind words and your offer. As EVula so humorously mentioned, it has been brought up once or twice, and the honest answer is that I simply haven't decided as of yet. It means a great deal to me that you offer, as I've seen your work, admired your patience and diplomacy, and I consider you an excellent administrator. I am deeply honored by your offer, and I hope you'll understand if I would like to take some time before I make a decision. ArielGold 19:57, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
<last, but not least> In the classic RFA comment, you mean you aren't an admin already? Your patience and diplomacy are badly needed and I'd be delighted to support your application. Accounting4Taste:talk 20:45, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
 • Good call to take some time to consider it... Adminship isn't all secret cabal meetings (complete with aged cognac, brie, and funny hats), pissing on the serfs, and having fun. Quite a bit of it is actually tedious work and getting constantly cajoled about how your actions are wrong & abusive. Every time you use the tools, no matter how well you explain yourself, there is always a chance that someone is going to completely freak out about what you've done. It's less a privilege or mark of distinction than it is a responsibility and service. That fact that you are taking time to think about it suggests you have the right temperament for the job, should you want it.--Isotope23 talk 20:53, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Isotope, shh! No one is supposed to know about the secret meetings with delicious finger foods and fine wines! GlassCobra 22:25, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Heh, thanks, I figured if I could source some of it, then the silly edit warring might go away. But, I can't really find sources to back up most of the sports records, although I don't doubt they are true, it is just this is a AAA school, so not really covered except in really small local papers. Even the school's website doesn't have the past stats online, go figure that, eh? Ah well. ArielGold 14:47, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Sig Design

Ariel, did you design your own signature? I think I am ready to break down and get a custom signature and wondered if you did your own or if somebody deisgned it for you? If somebody did it for you, can you point me in their direction? If you did it yourself, could you possibly help design me a cool signature? If not, thats ok too. Hope all is well and glad you liked my new picture! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:54, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

I did mine, and I've done many for other people as well. What colors do you want? Do you want it to be fairly short? I'd make the suggestion of linking "Chris" to your userpage, and "Kreider" to your talk page, and leave out your username altogether, but I'd need colors to know what options you'd like. ArielGold 18:00, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
would it be too much to include my usernaame and my real name? I may someday get a name change but until then I would like my real username to be the firs thting in my signature. I like blues and greens for colors. Really you can suprise me though! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:06, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

I accidentally vandalized

I reverted what I thought to be vandalism, but in fact it was removal of vandalism, and got cautioned by User:MelicansMatkin for it. Will this hurt my chances at RfA in the future? Maser (Talk!) 22:57, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

We all make mistakes :-) It won't hurt your future RfA chances at all, you thought you were reverting vandalism and got it wrong, I've done that a few times before so don't worry about it. I see you've explained the mistake to the person that templated you, there's really no need to worry. Ryan Postlethwaite 23:02, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

RE RfB/Goodshoped

Thanks for providing some background information. Reading through your comments on Goodshoped's most recent RfA (which I missed commenting on, but had seen before in the archives), I completely agree with you that he was not ready to be an administrator at that time, and that he has an unfortunate tendency towards immaturity and odd behaviour. (While I try to avoid stereotypes, I strongly suspect he's quite young in real life.) I also agree that his repeated tagging of U.S.A as a meatpuppet of PeeWeeHermann was unacceptable.

However, I felt, looking through his talk page archives, that Goodshoped had very clearly been subjected to a totally inexcusable level of harassment and trolling by PeeWeeHermann's various sockpuppets, and that his irrational reactions were understandable (through not justified) under those circumstances. As such, the impression I got was that the community should have generally given him slightly more leeway.

I was not aware, until you informed me, that EVula had discussed the block at ANI (my own fault for not watching ANI). This was certainly the correct action to take, and I see from the link you provided that there was a clear consensus in favour of the block. So I am not in any way suggesting that the block was inappropriate.

I was also slightly concerned about the posts, from EVula and several other people, regarding Goodshoped's use of Wikipedia as a "social networking site"; in my opinion, such use of Wikipedia does not in itself harm or disrupt the project. As such, a user who is spending, say, 90% of their time/edits on social networking and 10% on productive editing should not be warned or sanctioned in any way, just gently encouraged in the right direction - unless, of course, they are actively disrupting Wikipedia, in which case warnings and blocks are obviously justified. Your evidence has shown me that many of Goodshoped's actions were disruptive, so I understand the background to the case a little more (although I'd still like to hear EVula's own words on the matter).

Just to re-iterate that I strongly support EVula's RfB, and that support will remain regardless of his answer to the question. WaltonOne 19:14, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

There is an old saying that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I think many of that editor's intentions were indeed good, but the actions that followed seemed to invariably cause grief.--Isotope23 talk 19:18, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism Warning

 • Thanks. I named the article being vandalized within the title of the section that I created. I'll begin to use the parameters you mentioned. I usually do sign my edits. Sorry. will381796 (talk) 17:10, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh, I see that now, yeah. It is helpful to use a month header if one doesn't exist, so admins and editors know what level warning the editor is on, but making a subheader with article name is fine too. Thanks for the note, and no worries, I forget to sign sometimes too! :D ArielGold 17:12, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey

Thats all well and good but right now the article is vandalised and the vandalism needs to be removed.LifeStroke420 (talk) 18:04, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

I took a look at the IP edits done prior to the protection, and they amount to this. This is not vandalism, it is removal of a bit of information, and the addition of an improperly formatted wiki link. Not something that is a huge issue, but I will leave this message on Maxim's page as well, and if he feels it is a valid reason to remove it, he can. ArielGold 18:10, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Media Monitoring at AFC

Hello. I noticed you recently declined this submission to AFC as "This suggestion doesn't sufficiently explain the importance or significance of the subject." I certainly wouldn't argue against declining this submission given the vague-to-the-point-of-impossible-to-verify sources, but I was wondering if you honestly felt that "Chong Newztel is a New Zealand’s largest media monitoring company" actually didn't constitute an assertion of notability. I doubt anything will come of this either way, just wondering. Someguy1221 (talk) 22:32, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

It was a toss up between that, and between no reliable sources given. I'll be happy to change the reason it was declined. The only sources that can verify that claim are the site itself, which is obviously not neutral, nor reliable. Additionally, the submission was done by a promotional username, who previously used their userpage as advertisement spam (which was deleted), which would indicate that their purpose is to advertise the company. If there were reliable news/media sources available, advertisement efforts such as this would generally not be attempted. I will, however, change the rationale as to why it cannot be created, as it did not have any reliable verifiable sources given. Thanks for pointing that out! ArielGold 22:35, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Warnings

Please do not "knock down" a warning level, like you did for User talk:67.168.166.3. I always give the 3 warnings, and have never had any blocks denied after the 3. thank you, Ctjf83 talk 03:05, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I did this because the warning was for a revert I made, and I prefer to leave my own warnings. Thanks. ArielGold 03:06, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
My apologies...we must have been editing Corn dog at the same time, and your rvt beat mine, and since I thought I rvted, I put the talk page warning Ctjf83 talk 03:10, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I'm sorry my reply was so short, let me expand on my explanation a bit, I changed the warning left on User talk:67.168.166.3 because it was done for a revert that I had made, and I do prefer to leave my own warnings, as I sometimes use custom templates to encourage editors to stop and think, a bit more personalized, less "templatey". Note that you did not revert any of the Corn dog edits, [2], so yes, I did remove your level 3 following a level 1, and replace it with a non-bot, custom message, hopefully designed to get the editor to stop their nonconstructive edits. I sincerely apologize if you were offended, but I feel it is best to allow the person who reverted nonconstructive editors a chance to leave a notice, and if they do not, then yes, then I will sometimes leave a warning, and of course, that would be great for you to do as well. Additionally, the editor only made three edits to the Corn dog article, and yet you accidentally added a fourth and last warning for editing Corn dog. Now, please don't take this wrong, because I've run into you in reverts quite often, and you're awesome at RC patrol, but I've noticed that many times (in fact, a great many times), Twinkle will lead me to believe I "got" the revert, take me to the editor's talk page, but in fact, my revert never went through, due to someone else getting there first. I've made it a habit to double-check the article history in most cases, to be sure that someone else would not be leaving a warning, resulting in duplicate notices. This is what happened, I recognized it, and I'm sorry that you thought I was removing your warning, but I didn't want the editor to be double-warned. Sadly, it seems they did not heed my advice, and they did end up being blocked. :( Anyway, I just wanted to expand on that, I couldn't reply immediately at length, but wanted to clear it up! Thank you so much for understanding, ArielGold 03:19, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
thank you for that, an apology is not needed from you, as you actually didn't do anything wrong! :) I, however, am apologizing for wrongly accusing you of down-grading my template, when my rvt didn't go through. thank you again for your response Ctjf83 talk 03:22, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
You need not apologize. I fully understand, as more than once, I've had an edit conflict and thought, Hey! lol. I think it is partly my slower ISP and laggy browser, that causes Twinkle to act like that. If it doesn't happen often to you, feel fortunate! You're lucky, lol. Another Category

Ariel, a little while ago you created a Category for me; "South Carolina-related lists". I was wondering if you would either 1) teach me how to create one myself, or 2) create another for me? I need one named "Georgia-related lists". Many thanks, Rocketmaniac (talk) 19:42, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Ah, what happened here? The font size totally changed when I saved my question. Did I do this? If so, I have no idea how I did it and did not intend to do this. Rocketmaniac (talk) 19:46, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Okay, learning is done by "See one, do one, teach one", so I did one, the SC category, now you do one, simply go to Category:Georgia-related lists, which, yes, that's a red link, but that's okay. Edit the page, and add , and Georgia at the top. This will "Create" the page. Technically, you can add pages to a non-existent category, and they will still show up, but the category link will be red until something is actually added to the category page itself. So, for things like this, just adding the portal link, and the main category, will "create" the page. Try it out and let me know if you have any problems. ArielGold 19:54, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
I did it, I did it!. Ok, now....which piece of code actually created the category? (I did it, but I need to know the process so I can do it again with a different example) Rocketmaniac (talk) 20:16, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Technically, categories aren't created until you add a page to them. And if you add a category to a page, but don't actually put something onto the category page, it will be a red link, but that doesn't mean the page you added to that red-linked category doesn't show up, you can add hundreds of pages to a category, and never actually "create" the category page and it still will categorize them. But once you edit the category page itself, even to just add a single period, the link turns blue. Categories work differently than articles, in that they can exist without actually having anything on the page, but to keep them from being red links, you add the main category to them, and that turns the link blue. And, conversely, you can create a category page by putting something on it, but if there are no articles with that category linked, then it basically doesn't exist, it is just an empty page that does nothing. An area you may find interesting, is the categories for deletion discussions, as they will help give you a background on what exactly categories are used for, and how they function.
Categorization itself is can be a complicated matter, but the page Wikipedia:Categories might also be worth reading. Basically, if you remember back to high school biology, think of categories in the way you might think of species, there is the Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, in a hierarchical organization, this is sort of what categories do. So, for example, in Category:Georgia, there are pages to counties, cities, boroughs, towns, and each of those is also a sub-category of Georgia, which is a sub-category of Category:States, and in addition to the various sub-categories related to places, you can have sub-categories related to things, like parks, schools, etc. Not sure if that answered your question, but I hope so! :) ArielGold 20:32, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Help!

I've got myself in a mess of trouble. I started working on adding "lists" to my new Category:Georgia-related lists, and while editing the "lists of newspapers for Georgia" I accidently edited a US Template. Now I can't figure out how/what to undo my mistake. Please help me before I get blocked for "VANDALISM" Rocketmaniac (talk) 21:24, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

No worries hon, you would not be blocked for that, nor would it be called vandalism. We all make mistakes when learning, especially with templates. I simply reverted back to the revision prior to your edits, which restored the "lists of" category code. Don't worry! Holler if you need any more help, and have a nice hot cup of cocoa to sip on while you work.   ArielGold 21:28, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

It seems to have started back here, but there don't seem to be any requests for the subsequent accounts, or sock tags done to track the various accounts. My memory fails me, so I'm not sure I remember them all, but I found that checkuser, and this one. Maybe the real Agüeybaná will remember more, but it isn't a frequent issue, one of them crops up now and then, and is swiftly dealt with, so I wouldn't think it is a huge deal. Snark collision

(Reply here OK? I'll watchlist) Really, I don't think myself and user VanTucky actually are getting coal in our stockings, but maybe it's seasonal affective disorder. Will you take a glance at Talk:Horse over the minor snarkfest VT and I seem to be having over the lead image and if you feel like weighing in, to weigh in with your delightfully calming influence? It started with his decision to change the lead image with an edit summary I considered pretentious and snarky, and then yes, I did make a comment on VT's talk page (because he frequently has just gone in and messed with article images in the horse articles, shooting about 50-50 whether they are helpful or unhelpful), I didn't mean to be pretentious and snarky back, but it was viewed as such, so he made a comment back on my talk page I then viewed as snarky and once we both appeared to be totally po'd at each other, we then took it to the article talk page for further debate, though perhaps more reasoned. I don't think it's a crisis, but I've said my bit and usually if I say more it only throws fat on the fire. So, when you are online, can you swing over there and take a peek? Besides, if I don't go get some sleep, Santa won't arrive with presents. So signing off now. I hear reindeer on the roof... Montanabw(talk) 09:24, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Seeking suggestions

Twice now, both times using anon IP access, someone has modified the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (aka RASCOM) page to indicate this organization's first satellite -- recently launched on an Ariane 5 -- is non-functional in orbit and has been declared a "total loss". As yet there is no supporting evidence of this from e.g. Google News. I flagged the first assertion of this with a fact tag, and then another editor reverted it entirely. Now the assertion has been restored (from a second IP address). What's the best way to let this persistent anon IP user know that without a source citation, the article can't retain the claim of the satellite being lost? Thanks for any help/suggestions! Hello

Just popping in to say hello; haven't spoken to you in a while. You haven't edited since the 24th, I hope it's just holidays. But I guess we could consider this a smile. Anyway. Hope everything's well. I (talk) 05:53, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

League of Copyeditors roll call

Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

Happy New Year!

Dear friend, I hope you had a wonderful New Year's Eve, and that 2008 is your best year yet! ~ Riana 04:43, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Help please from Ariel's Talk Page Helpers

ShadowWatch brought this to my attention. Every article on a day including or after March 1 is wrong! An easy way of seeing this is to look at the December 31 as it says this is the 366th day of the year (667 on leap years)! It is the template day that creates the first line of the articles, so my guess is that the problem is in there somewhere. When reading the December 31 article you may also notice it says There are -1 days remaining until the end of the year. - that could do with fixing as well :P Good Luck! Tiddly-Tom 08:46, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I am currently working on this --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 13:00, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
This should be fixed now Tom. Lets hope that with this new implementation we won't have a problem on January 2009 :D --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 13:25, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much, DJ ;) I started looking at it and ended up just getting confused ;) Tiddly-Tom 13:45, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I can imagine. The problem was that it used but this parserfunction returns different values in leap years than in normal years. That is something the template didn't account for before. It took me quite some while to figure out a better tactic. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 13:57, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Happy New Year, ArielGold

Hope all is well with you Ariel - a little concerned as well, and the very best of New Years. (olive (talk) 18:39, 4 January 2008 (UTC))

Happy New Year

I've met you a couple of months ago in the account request forum. I hope it's not too late to tell you Happy New Year, even though we're already a week into 2008. New York Dreams (talk) 11:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Talk Page Help

Hi Ariel

You once put a header on my talk page over my UserBoxes, saying "Animals I Like". Well, I added some new headers ("Entertainment" and "All About Me") but I would like to change the colours. Could you make "Entertainment" maybe like a crimson/burgandy colour and "All About Me" a baby blue border and light pink on the inside? That would be much appreciated!Leamarie411x2 (talk) 00:27, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

This request has been fulfilled. I hope neither of you mind that I did it... --MikeVitale 16:52, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks MikeVitale! It's really nice. I don't really mind who does it. Leamarie411x2 (talk) 01:15, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Could someone change the colours of the header "Canadian Heritage" to red and white? Thanks!Leamarie411x2 (talk) 01:33, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi

I think that, because of all the Userboxes that I have, that I would like to have a sub-page for userboxes, like you do. The request above is still in effect. Hope that I'm not causing too much work. Or being annoying!:D Thank you sooo much for all the work you've done on my page, Ariel! And Mike: thanks! Leamarie411x2 (talk) 01:48, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

The Helping Wiki-Hand Award is awarded to ArielGold for all her work on my user page. You've done so much work on my page that you need an award for it. Thank you so much! Leamarie411x2 (talk) 02:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Done - it should be easier to change now as the old code was quite a bit more complicated. Just post any changes you want here. I have left them on your user page, if you would prefer to use the subpage I made, you should probably delete them off of your userpage. Tiddly-Tom 07:55, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Could you place a link to the sub-page on my userpage? (A NavBar similar to Ariel's, but with only "Main" "Talk" and "Userboxes" would help) Thanks! Leamarie411x2 (talk) 21:41, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

  Done - Tiddly-Tom 15:13, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Just a note

I wanted to say that every time I use one of my li'l templates or create a new one, I think of you with gratitude. :) Thanks for making my work so much easier. you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:41, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

ArielGold is OK

I can't say how or why, but I want everyone to know we got word from Ariel and she'll be back soon! RlevseTalk 02:21, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Great news!!! Some of us had been really concerned - Alison 02:26, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Ariel, we've been keeping your corner warm. We can't wait for you to come back. <3 LaraLove 03:47, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

...we might need to do some cleaning up before you come back, though. It got a little, uh, messy... EVula // talk // // 05:37, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad she is ok. But I didn't realize there was a problem, I just thought she had gone somewhere for a long holiday vacation. Rocketmaniac (talk) 11:20, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, we're all really missing you. Hope you'll be back soon! Leamarie411x2 (talk) 02:07, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Ariel said to say hello to everyone and to let you know that she is feeling better, but not yet well enough to sit at the computer. She said not to worry and to give all of you her thanks for your concern...she misses all of us too.. Dreadstar 19:08, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank goodness!! Pass on the message that we all miss her so much and want her to get well soon so she can hurry back to us! hugs - Alison 19:13, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
