WikiCup 2023 March newsletter
So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.
The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included

Juxlos,

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Hi Amakuru. Do you have any objection to me swapping the POTD you scheduled for March 14 to the 10th and putting back the Golden Delicious one I had originally scheduled for that date? Hi Amakuru. It was a pleasant surprise to see the file File:Saung-Gauk.jpg up for a POTD. I have begun cleaning up the article associated with the image. I need an opinion. I have been working on User:Jacqke/bow harp which will become Arched harp (now a redirect), the family of instruments to which the Saung belongs. Should I rush to get this ready to be linked-to within the saung article? Or do you think the article has possibilities to draw attention later, maybe featured or as a Did you know? Is it necessary for the POTD images to be Wikipedia Featured pictures or is it fine if they are Wikimedia featured pictures

- @Aviafanboi: they do have to be Wikipedia featured pictures, i.e. those that are listed at WP:FP, and have been approved by the editors on English Wikipedia specifically. Signups open for The Core Contest
The Core Contest—Wikipedia's most exciting contest—will take place this year from April 15 to May 31. The goal: to improve vital or other core articles, with a focus on those in the worst state of disrepair. Editing can be done individually, but in the past groups have also successfully competed. There is £300 of prize money divided among editors who provide the "best additive encyclopedic value". Signups are open now. Cheers from the judges, Femke, Casliber, Aza24.

Link not working properly

- @Aviafanboi: I have moved some items around, to ensure compliance with the WP:POTD guidelines; in particular, that the entries from one day to the next show a variety of topics, and that we are generally promoting the oldest items first (although some exceptions can apply to this). - Some older web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis starting this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. (T178356)
- The rollback of Vector 2022 RfC has found no consensus to rollback to Vector legacy, but has found rough consensus to disable "limited width" mode by default.
- A link to the user's Special:CentralAuth page will now appear in the subtitle links shown on Special:Contributions. This was voted #17 in the Community Wishlist Survey 2023.

HMB vs MHS Endeavour replica
I don't know much about naming ships, and don't know what a bark is, but the National Maritime Museum where this thing sits calls it HMB or Bark. Do we care? And have a happy ANZAC day. Dicklyon (talk) 01:57, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Dicklyon: like yourself, I'd never heard of a "bark" before I saw this yesterday (and hence was a little WP:ASTONISHed to see such a term in the page title), and I'm no expert on the matter... my reason for moving was simply that the main article itself is called HMS Endeavour, and there's an explicit footnote there stating that while it was technically a bark, and sometimes known as HM Bark, the general decision is to refer to it as HMS. I think that argument applies in equal measure to the replica, per WP:CONSISTENT. Also there definitely are sources which refer to the replica as "HMS Endeavour", e.g. [1] and [2]. Moving Magic Slate to Magic slate
Hi, I feel your recent move of Magic Slate to Magic slate is not correct. "Magic Slate" is a registered trade mark, see here, hence the use of upper case. Also many of the sources cited in the article refer to it as "Magic Slate", not "Magic slate", see Duns (2013) p.20 and Madison (1966) p.469 and most of the other cited sources, for example this, this, this and this. - @Bruce1ee: I was mainly going by the ngram, which seemed to suggest that a lot of book sources don't capitalise the term in running prose, e.g. [3][4]. Per MOS:CAPS, we should only treat it as a proper name if sources also do so... And is this article about a specific product, or a generic class of toy? Looking at Amazon, it's unclear which of the results are for actual branded Magic Slates and which are generic copies. But anyway, since this is going to DYK tomorrow and you've requested for me to revert, I have done so. I may look into it more in a couple of days and possibly file a move request. - @Jay: the redirect was created the very same day that the AFD had been closed, and it was closed as "Delete", not "Redirect". If it's that easy to recreate pages as redirects after deletion, I'm not sure why we have the Delete close in the first place... But anyway, since you've requested it, and according to the letter of the policy you're correct it wasn't a recreation of a similar page, I've restored it. WikiCup 2023 May newsletter
The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:
- Iazyges (1040) with three FAs on Byzantine emperors, and lots of bonus points.
- Unlimitedlead (847), with three FAs on ancient history, one GA and nine reviews.
- Epicgenius (636), a WikiCup veteran, with one FA on the New Amsterdam Theatre, four GAs and eleven DYKs
BennyOnTheLoose (553), a seasoned competitor, with one FA on snooker, six GAs and seven reviews.- FrB.TG (525), with one FA, a Lady Gaga song and a mass of bonus points.
Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, 
MyCatIsAChonk, PCN02WPS, and 
AirshipJungleman29.
So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
