Conversion from metric

edit

Be advised that you don't need to specify the output when converting knots or nautical miles as they automatically output into both ordinary miles and kilometers. I fixed those conversions on Ajax for you already. I leave it to you to do those in your other translations.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:19, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – April 2018

edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).

  Administrator changes

  331dotCordless LarryClueBot NG
  Gogo DodoPb30SebastiankesselSeicerSoLando

  Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

  Miscellaneous

  • A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Article creation from foreign language Wikipedias

edit

I think these articles you created are translations from foreign Wikipedia sites French submarine Redoutable (Q136), French submarine Ajax (Q148) and German torpedo boat Albatros. You need to tag them as such. This was explained to you earlier when you created French corvette Alysse. Lyndaship (talk) 08:23, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Okay. Note that French corvette Alysse is not a translation of anywhere. L293D ( • ) 12:55, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

I've accepted this. Lack of formatting is no reason for declining a red-linked article on a notable topic with reliable references. Espresso Addict (talk) 05:55, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Dreadnought revert

edit

The link was fine as it was originally; there's no need to bypass redirect pages as your IP did.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 03:42, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Oh, well I didn't see that it was a link anyway, but reverting like you did without a reason should be done only for vandalism. You could have pressed 'rollback AGF' and entered your reason of reverting in the edit summary. Anyway, I still think the link is clearer now but its really a detail. Mass refactoring of discussion threads

edit

Hi. Really sorry about this, but I've just had to quickly block you as your AWB run seems to have gone haywire and is refactoring discussions on ANI and elsewhere, which is a big no-no. As soon as you confirm here you have stopped, I will unblock. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:11, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

@Galobtter: Can you confirm all the disruption caused by L293D's edits has been reverted? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:16, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
I think the rest were gotten by someone else, I do believe yes Galobtter (pingó mió) 14:21, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
Ritchie333, it looks like GiantSnowman did a mass rollback. Might want him to confirm. TonyBallioni (talk) 14:28, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
GiantSnowman's mass rollback hit a few articles on my watchlist - example. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:29, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
That was a mistake.See my note at his t/p and there are more of the same type.~ Winged BladesGodric 14:31, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
Sorry all! Looks like some good edits got caught up in my attempt to help clean up this issue...GiantSnowman 14:32, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
No problem, I will take at least the useful edit on my article and re-apply it by hand... --Metrancya (talk) 15:45, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
I've self-reverted. GiantSnowman 14:36, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict):Regrettable but strange stuff.Your very first edit in this AWB-run was good-enough but what dump(s) were you using that caused AWB to crawl non-mainspace targets, from there onwards?!~ Winged BladesGodric
@GiantSnowman: why did you mass revert me? I hadn't made more than 50 problematic edits, and you reverted at least several hundred ones. And besides, you didn't fully self revert: see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and approximately 40 more pages. Your mess is going to take several hours to clean up. Seriously? You should be more thoughtful when using Special:Nuke/L293D. Its not because you're an admin that you can do that type of thing. @Ritchie333: do you admins have a Special:UnNuke or something like that? L293D ( • ) 18:24, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
I don't think it's fair to get on GiantSnowman's case given it was your responsibility to edit carefully with AWB. See the big orange warning here. Everyone makes mistakes. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:27, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
It would have been easier for me to self revert 50 changes or so than to clean up GS's mess, and besides it would not have flooded my notifications system and watchlist. L293D ( • ) 18:29, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
L293D Everyone was pretty nice to you after you made a mistake (several in a row, in fact) in violation of this policy. You should probably extend the same to GS who was in fact cleaning up your mess. I'm sure it would have been a lot easier had the AWB run not gone wrong. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 18:33, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

OK. We aren't getting anywhere here. I'll just try to be more thoughtful when using AWB in the future and Ill take time to clean up after GS's well meant but wrongly used mass revert. L293D ( • ) 18:42, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

L293D - I'm still awaiting the post mortem as to what went wrong with your operation of AWB and I'd like to hear what steps you intend to take to ensure this sort of incident does not arise again as a result of your editing/programming of AWB. The response to this enquiry will dictate whether or not you retain access to AWB. I will note that I am already discouraged by the way in which you've attacked GiantSnowman who was simply trying to fix your mess, additionally, I'm further discouraged by the time it has taken you to respond at all, despite the fact you should have been overseeing the operation of AWB when it was making edits it should not have been making. Nick (talk) 18:57, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
To my knowledge, it is not possible to program AWB to self-save edits without prior verification. I had no idea about this policy and I thought it would be OK to free places like ANI from typos. I'm always annoyed by them, and it reduces readability to try to get what was supposed to be written. Now of you want them to stay, then it not my problem; I rarely go to ANI and I won't mind taking the extra time to decipher your typos. My edits were just WP:BOLD and had nothing evil about them, but instead of assuming good faith, you mass reverted my last 200 edits or so, flooded my notifications system and my watchlist and left a big mess behind. The only action that was really justified here was Ritchie's 3-hour block. L293D ( • ) 19:13, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
Just my (perhaps unhelpful) 2c but you should not be fixing any typos on any part of this project except mainspace, Whether typos annoy you or not is absolutely irrelevant, Had you not made these silly edits GS and others wouldn't have had any reason to revert so as such you have no one to blame here but yourself, I personally would support AWB revocation as your responses here have so far been below par, There's also no "I'm sorry for my mistakes I shan't make this infuture" either..... So far you've got arsey with everyone and blamed everyone else for your mistakes. –Davey2010Talk 19:23, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
Ironically enough, the basic idea behind the block was to stop any more AWB edits coming through, go through the problematic ones (I think there were about 20-30 but no more) and carefully revert them; but then other editors came in and did a mass-rollback. I'm very much into manual editing, as you are more likely to get things right, and very uncomfortable about automated tools (I use them, but only when I've learned to do it "the hard way" and save time). As mentioned above, I had hoped to unblock you as soon as you'd said something like "oops, looks like AWB went haywire - sorry, I've stopped!" Anyway, I think all the edits are fixed now, if not, let us know. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:39, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: well, yes they are fixed now, but if you read the discussion above, you will see that they were quite over-fixed and its going to take some time to clean up manually. I don't know what tool GS used, but I would say that it was not used with sufficient caution. L293D ( • ) 19:43, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
  • AWB access pulled. People make mistakes (and even experienced users don't know every guideline), but I'm not overly thrilled with the levels of sass coming from someone who just broke one of WP's core behavioural guidelines. You're welcome to re-apply for use, but I would suggest waiting a while and thinking over this situation carefully and how you could have handled it better. Primefac (talk) 19:29, 9 April 2018 (UTC) (talk page stalker)
(edit conflict) I did say that Ill try to be more thoughtful when using AWB earlier, and I still say it was an error from my part. That said, GS's mass rollback was not done with sufficient caution, even if well meant. However, if you want to remove my AWB rights, its up to you. L293D ( • ) 19:36, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
I re-read through this thread, and I can see how your frustration at the situation might have resulted in some overly-dramatic replies. I've re-instated your AWB access, and I hope that you'll be more cautious in the future. Primefac (talk) 14:22, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Flag

edit

Hi, L293D.
I've noticed that you are an AfC reviewer but don't yet have the New Page Reviewer flag. Would you please consider heading over to PERM and requesting it? (check the flag requirements HERE)
As part of a larger plan to increase cooperation between New Page Patrol and Articles for creation, we are trying to get as many of the active AfC reviewers as possible under the NPR user flag (per this discussion). Unlike the AfC request list, the NPR flag carries no obligation to review new articles, so I'm not asking you to help out at New Page Patrol if you don't want to, just to request the flag.
Of course, if it is something you would be interested in, you can have a look at the NPP tutorial. Please mention that you are an active AfC reviewer in your application.
Cheers and thanks for helping out at AfC, — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 06:33, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Insertcleverphrasehere: thanks for the invitation, but I already applied a month ago and got declined because of some of my AfC reviews that later got deleted. I'll consider re-applying in a few weeks. Besides, if you read the thread above, you'll see that I sometimes lose my cool, so perhaps I should work on that too. Adèle Fisher (talk) 14:34, 13 April 2018 (UTC).

Ill take a look, but what do I have to do with this? Did we meet before or are you distributing messages at random users? Thanks, L293D ( • ) 14:38, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
You've been canvassed in a vote stacking attempt because you !voted to keep an article of Adele's that was previously nominated for deletion (Positive Money). Number 57 15:29, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
I didn't know this had happened. All I can say is, the contributors who'd proposed to delete the Wikipedia article about "Positive Money" for lack of notability were hopefully joking. Yes, AfD is a very serious process but, even so, joking is preferable to nominating for deletion an article whose subject is abundantly, clearly notable. -The Gnome (talk) 07:17, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

The Lion King Musical

I suggested an edit on 8th April 2018 for the lion king musical page

You asked me to provide a reliable source... I was in the show and have been a fan of the musical for nearly a decade and a half.

For things directly relating to cast members check the relevant cast pages... example this is the current Lion King Hamburg Cast

The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.

You are invited to join, and participate in the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system and all the portals in it.

There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.

Many complaints have been lodged in the RfC to delete all portals, pointing out their various problems. They say that many portals are not maintained, or have fallen out of date, are useless, etc. Many of the !votes indicate that the editors who posted them simply don't believe in the potential of portals anymore.

It's time to change all that. Let's give them reasons to believe in portals, by revitalizing them.

The best response to a deletion nomination is to fix the page that was nominated. The further underway the effort is to improve portals by the time the RfC has run its course, the more of the reasons against portals will no longer apply. RfCs typically run 30 days. There are 19 days left in this one. Let's see how many portals we can update and improve before the RfC is closed, and beyond.

A healthy WikiProject dedicated to supporting and maintaining portals may be the strongest argument of all not to delete.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

Let's do this.

See ya at the WikiProject!

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   10:22, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Moving Drafts

edit

Hi L293D. Thanks for all of your work on here. However it's come to my attetion that you recently copied and pasted Draft:Cyril Bagnost into the main space where it appears as Cyril Bagnost and looks like an article of your creation rather than the work of its author Das osmnezz. If you wish to approve a draft, you should follow the procedures in WP:MOVE. Otherwise you are duplicating material and, I presume unintentionally, it creates the appearance that you were the author. I am going to delete the new article under WP:A10. Thank you again for your many contributions to the project and your cooperation in future moves of drafts. Best regards... -Ad Orientem (talk) 01:02, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Ad Orientem, I apologize for the error. I will go back and accept them normally. I have no idea why I didn't do them the normal way. Note that you will have to A10 four more articles that were created the same way: Samuel Chebli, Anthony Soubervie, Mun Seung-man, and Emmanuel Emuejeraye. Sorry for disrupting. L293D ( • ) 02:41, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
No problem. Happy editing. -Ad Orientem (talk) 13:16, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
I went back and accepted them manually. L293D ( • ) 13:27, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 18:31, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
