Currently held byChris Evans (2022)

Sexiest Man Alive[a] is an annual issue of the weekly American magazine People, featuring a man they deem to be the year's most sexually attractive. The inaugural issue came to fruition in 1985 when Mary Dunn, a photo editor of People, came across a photo of American actor Mel Gibson during a meeting and said: "Oh my God, he is the sexiest man alive!".[2][3] Gibson was subsequently interviewed on the set of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and graced the first-ever Sexiest Man Alive cover, published on February 4, 1985.[4] Since then, People editors have chosen 34 male celebrities for the title, predominantly actors who have garnered significant public attention through their involvement in high-profile movie releases.[5][6] The most recent holder of the title is American actor Chris Evans in 2022.

The issue was halted during 1993 and 1994. It was superseded in 1993 by the first and only Sexiest Couple Alive issue, which was dedicated to Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere.[7] In honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary, People editors selected Keanu Reeves as the 1994 winner in 2015.[7] Since 1997, the title has been annually announced in a special double issue between late November and early December.[7] American actors Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, and George Clooney are the only men to have earned the title twice.[7][b] The youngest recipient was John F. Kennedy Jr., who was 27 years old when he earned the honor in 1988.[7] The following year, Sean Connery became the oldest winner at the age of 59.[7]

People magazine announced the recipients on several television shows before the annual issue's release, notably NBC's Today show.[8][9] Starting from 2013, the honorees were exclusively revealed on several talk shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2013–15, 2020, 2023),[10] The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2016),[11] The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2018),[12] and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2021–22).[13] American musicians Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and John Legend revealed their Sexiest Man Alive issues on The Voice, a reality competition television series they participated as coaches.[14] People magazine has celebrated the franchise by releasing various media products, including a 20th anniversary book in 2006,[15] a 2010 television special on ABC (hosted by Kim Kardashian),[16] and a 2015 television special on Lifetime.[1]

Criteria and reception edit

American actor Mel Gibson was the inaugural choice for Sexiest Man Alive in 1985

The criteria for selecting the Sexiest Man Alive has never been disclosed.[6][17] People editors spent months

Turn down: Matt [1] Ryan Gosling criticised for only picking one non-white star as the winner in its 26-year history, which was Denzel Washington in 1996. However, the title says race isn't a factor and that the list includes a diverse group of men. [2] [18]

At thirteen, American actor Fred Savage (pictured in 1989) was named the Sexiest Man in Minor Category in 1989

In 2002, former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was declared the Sexiest Cabinet Member at the age of 70

In 1989, when Connery was chosen as the Sexiest Man Alive, People published a list of ten contenders for the title.[56] Each contender was assigned a unique category, including the Sexiest Man in Minor Category, which was awarded to American actor Fred Savage when he was just 13 years old.[56] Kathleen Parker, writing for Orlando Sentinel, criticized the unsexy categorization and the lack of humility displayed by the contenders.[57] Parker also found it inappropriate and misleading that Savage won a Sexiest Man category at such a young age.[57]

Since 1997, People has announced the Sexiest Man Alive winners in a special double issue, and recognized men from different professions in unique categories,[16] including NASA astronaut Jerry M. Linenger,[58] astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson,[59] Internet analyst Omar Wasow,[60] and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.[61] Featured in multiple categories from 2014 to 2016, physician Mikhail Varshavski and veterinarian Evan Antin gained public attention on Instagram and attributed their newfound popularity to their inclusion in the magazine.[62] In 2002, People dedicated the Sexiest Cabinet Member category to the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, praising his "blunt talk and wry humor" at the age of 70.[63][64] Upon Rumsfeld's passing in 2021, Cracked.com's Carly Tennes panned the magazine's decision based on his later central role on the Iraq War and the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal.[65] Tennes opined that Rumsfeld might be remembered as both the Sexiest Cabinet Member and "a terrible politician with an evident disregard for human life."[65]

In 1993, the Sexiest Man Alive title was replaced by the Sexiest Couple Alive issue, dedicated to Crawford and Gere.[66]
