UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on December 29, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is headlined by a UFC Heavyweight Championship match between defending champion Junior dos Santos and former champion Cain Velasquez, in a rematch of a match they had on UFC on Fox 1 on November 12, 2011.[1][2]

Background edit

A rematch between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez has been expected since UFC 146 on May 26, 2012, at which dos Santos successfully defended his championship against Frank Mir, and Velasquez defeated Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. Velasquez and dos Santos had already fought each other once previously on November 12, 2011 at UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. dos Santos, where dos Santos won the UFC Heavyweight Title via knockout in the very first round by defeating Velasquez. Former Strikeforce, DREAM, and K-1 Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem was originally expected to face the winner of that bout, and was scheduled to face dos Santos for the title at UFC 146. However, on April 4, 2012, Overeem was revealed to have failed a random pre-fight drug test conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). He tested positive for an unnaturally elevated ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone with a ratio of 14-to-1, well over the maximum ratio allowed by the NSAC of 6-to-1.[3][4][5] Overeem was tested out of competition and thus technically was not suspended, but he was prohibited from applying for a fighter's license by the NSAC for 9 months as a result.[6] As the UFC declined to book Overeem in any fight anywhere until he was able to successfully obtain a license,[7] this cleared the way for Frank Mir's aforementioned unsuccessful title shot and ultimately Velasquez's rematch at UFC 155.

Chael Sonnen was expected to face former champion Forrest Griffin at this event in a light heavyweight bout in the co-main event. However, Sonnen was pulled from the fight to coach the seventeenth season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones and was replaced by Phil Davis.[8] Griffin himself was reported injured on December 5th,[9][10][11] and Phil Davis was shortly thereafter removed from the card entirely in lieu of a replacement opponent.[12]

As a result of Griffin vs. Davis being removed from the card entirely, a middleweight bout between Chris Leben and Karlos Vemola was promoted from the preliminary card to the main card.[13] In a further twist, Vemola also had to withdraw from his fight against Leben due to injury, and Strikeforce veteran Derek Brunson was subsequently contracted to replace him less than two weeks before the event.[14][15]

A middleweight bout between Chris Weidman and Tim Boetsch was expected for the card in what was potentially to be a title eliminator,[16] but Weidman was forced off the card following a torn labrum and possibly separated shoulder suffered in training, and Constantinos Philippou was tapped to replace him.[17][18]

Another middleweight bout between former title contender Yushin Okami and highly ranked Alan Belcher was also added to the main card in September, in a rematch dating back to each fighters' UFC debut in 2006 at UFC 62.[19]

A bout between highly ranked featherweights Erik Koch and Ricardo Lamas was expected to take place at this event. However, the bout was moved to UFC on Fox 6 and subsequently promoted to the main card.[20]

Joe Lauzon was originally scheduled to face former title contender Gray Maynard at this event in a lightweight match-up.[21] However, following a training injury, Maynard was forced off the card and Jim Miller was tapped as a replacement. [22]

Matt Mitrione was expected to face Phil De Fries at this event in a heavyweight bout[23], but was pulled off of it when a late-notice replacement was needed for Shane Carwin against Roy Nelson on the The Ultimate Fighter: Team Carwin vs. Team Nelson Finale.[24] Todd Duffee was then re-signed to the UFC as a replacement for Mitrione.[25]

A match in the lightweight division orignally scheduled for The Ultimate Fighter: Team Carwin vs. Team Nelson Finale between Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner was moved to UFC 155 after the oroginal fight was scratched by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to illness mere hours before it was scheduled to take place when Varner started throwing up in his dressing room.[26]

Leonard Garcia was originally scheduled to face The Ultimate Fighter Season 12 alumnae Cody McKenzie in a Featherweight match,[27] but McKenzie was reported injured on December 18, and had to pull out of the fight. Max Holloway was then tapped to replace him on short notice.[28]
