FYI: User:Petershatner is adding himself as a child of William Shatner, allegedly given up for adoption, without citing references that meet WP:Source standards. I've largely given up on reverting him.THD3 (talk) 17:27, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

FYI: User:Petershatner is Peter Shatner and Peter Shatner is the son of William Shatner.

Meanwhile, I have deleted the birthdates of Shatner's three daughters as they are not relevant to the article. Please review the multiple sources I have submitted for posting on the William Shatner page including The Wall Street Journal and The Herald Tribune which confirm that I am the son of William Shatner.

I am frankly shocked at the voracity with which the other editors has sought to block this fact.

I am not an expert at Wikipedia and haven't posted for some time. Some of the objections, such as repetition, are merely due my lack of activity on this site. Petershatner (talk) 15:23, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

@Petershatner:, would you post the sources you have here so everyone can review them in one place rather than searching for them? GB fan 15:31, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Petershatner (talk) 16:04, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

The sources you give do not verify the information you were trying to add to the article. The first one just is a mention that he met Peter Shatner staying out of the rain. Not a very good source for anything. The second does confirm the fact that William Shatner has a son named Peter. Neither of those two sources discuss who the mothers are, nor do they say what the birthdays are. The second source would support adding in the fact that William Shatner has a son named Peter but that is all it supports. GB fan 16:21, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Well, I'd consider there to be sufficient evidence to at least add the statement that there is a fourth child, a son named Peter. We'll have to look elsewhere for information on the exact circumstances of his birth, etc., but I see no reason to keep a mention of him out of the article and the infobox. Evan (talk|contribs) 17:02, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Now that protection has been removed I have added information about Peter Shatner into the article. GB fan 17:40, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Well GBfan,

Do whatever you think is right based upon the rules of Wikipedia, I am certainly no expert, but I am the son of William Shatner.

Cheers,

Pray for the Wildcats

I discovered something I don't think is in the entry. In 1974 he starred in a made for TV movie called Pray for the Wildcats. Here's the entry in IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072024/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.10.24.116 (talk) 22:09, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

We would need something more than IMDB for this to be added. GB fan 22:13, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
After doing a little more looking, there is an article on the TV movie, Pray for the Wildcats and it is listed at Works by William Shatner. GB fan 22:20, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

"Trained as a classical Shakespearean actor" – where? when?

The article doesn't give information about his "Shakespearean" theater training, only that he "is an alumnus of the Montreal Children's Theatre", then studied economics, and after graduating became manager of the Mountain Playhouse in Montreal – something is definitely missing here... -- megA (talk) 11:00, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

youthfulness

the article lacking sufficient photos, it may be hard to realize that shatner while 81/82 looks about 40 , 1/2 his age and , seems to have no plastic surgery , and has mostly no wringles, etc etc

He looks 3/4 or 4/5 his age, not 1/2. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:DA8:D800:279:BCE5:5012:131C:EDB0 (talk) 11:02, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

"[A] Canadian-American actor"

How can that be thought accurate? He's several times stated -- including to a BBC interviewer in England -- that he's not American but Canadian. Surely an employment visa doesn't make one American.Masalai (talk) 12:10, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Whos is "Bill" Shattner?

I've been around the track a few times and I've never heard of Shatner called "Bill". It's always "William". Always. The lede, which says "William 'Bill' Shatner is..." is generally used for people why are mainly called by the nickname. For instance "Thomas Jeffrey 'Tom' Hanks..." Hanks is always or mainly called Tom and not Thomas so this makes sense. For Shattner, not so much.

Mind you, this has little to do with what his family or friends might or might not call him in private. We have limited knowledge of or interest in that. Some of that might seep through if there are a lot of references by people in sources saying "I asked Bill if he'd be in my movie..." and so on. If people to refer to Shattner like that it's news to me, but maybe. But the general public doesn't, and news accounts don't, and so I've removed the Bill.

In Chekov's Enterprise, Koenig's journal about the filming of ST:TMP, there is one reference to "William", but 39 to "Bill". --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 03:52, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I still wouldn't put it in. Lots of people have personal nicknames among their friends. So? Maybe his wife calls him "Honey", should we put that in too? W.C. Field's friends called him "Bill" too, but so what? For readers who are personal friends of Shatner maybe this would be helpful information; for the 99.99+% who aren't, it's essentially false information and not helpful. Herostratus (talk) 23:03, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
The amount of times hes called Bill in interviews, hes own pages etc...we should mention the name I think. For people that follow him on Twitter and his website Bill is the norm ....http://williamshatner.com/ws/bills-appearances/]. -- Moxy (talk) 16:54, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Picture

The picture of Shatner in the infobox should be replaced. It's not really appropriate to illustrate an article about a living person with an image of him playing a fictional character - the article about Hugh Jackman doesn't show him in character as Wolverine, after all. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 00:05, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

In that case, we'd need to replace Nathan Lane's picture (from a performance of Simon Gray's Butley), Maggie Smith's publicity shot (Othello), Adam West's photo (Steve Nelson, from Robert Taylor's Detectives), Burt Lancaster's publicity shot (from Desert Fury), and even Elvis Presly's picture from Jailhouse Rock. I don't think we should try and be 'photo police' for an entire encyclopedia. Frednotbob (talk) 09:53, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
It's appropriate to have a lead photo which supports a person's primary notability, regardless of whether they're alive or not. Readers benefit from an instantly recognizable image, as opposed to a recent candid at some public event, which can give an article a newsy feel. When readers scroll to sections about someone's more recent personal life, it's logical to have any relevant images included there.--Light show (talk) 17:54, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
A more recent photo would be best as he is still famous and recognizable...we dont use kid images for famous child actors like Jerry Mathers or Macaulay Culkin...the point of the image in the lead is to see what they look like in a contemporary sense ....not for a role they played that can bee seen at James T. Kirk. I say we go back to File:William Shatner.jpg .-- Moxy (talk) 19:55, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, that's a much more appropriate picture. The current picture would be appropriate at an article about Star Trek, but it's extremely strange and inappropriate to this article, as it's about a real person rather than a fictional character. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 20:42, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
I moved the Star Trek picture down and moved up the Sydney picture to the infobox. - Kiraroshi1976 (talk) 04:07, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Shatner and environmentalism

The section Hobbies and charity work could benefit from mentioning Shatner's activism for environmental issues. In the bonus feature Star Trek for a Cause on the official BD of The Voyage Home, a leading member of Greenpeace states that both Shatner and Nimoy are (or were, sadly, in Nimoy's case) longtime members of Greenpeace and that Greenpeace officially uses an authorized tape recording of Shatner's voice for a phonecall for every new member to thank them for having joined the organization. At the press conference for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier included on the film's official BD release, Shatner bids farewell to the gathered reporters by saying into the mic, "Have a pollution-free evening!" And there's also recent interviews with Shatner such as [1] and I think also [2] where he warns about the consequences of climate change and that we need to do something about it. --2003:EF:170B:F985:EC7B:8953:CF30:A2CA (talk) 23:39, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

I suppose because they wanted to avoid "Shatner also played veteran police sergeant T. J. Hooker in T. J. Hooker", which is awkward. I added info about that. StarshipSLS (Talk), (My Contributions) 15:54, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

The excessive detail that StarshipSLS has added to the lead is unnecessary. The purpose of the lead is to summarize the content of the article. A brief mention there is sufficient, followed by providing the details in an appropriate section in the body of the article, after his acting work for which he is ostensibly primarily known. I recommend adding a section with the relevant details. --Kinu t/c 19:32, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

For want of a better definition, Wikipedia should stick to the government definition of an "astronaut" and thus should limit use of that term to those awarded astronaut wings. There are other terms such as "space traveller" and "space tourist" which can be used to describe Shatner in the opening sentence. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.21.135.198 (talk) 18:03, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Social media controversy was neither a one time thing nor non-consequential.

Hi @CactiStaccingCrane and anyone else interested. I saw this recent removal. When I initially added that information I tried to keep it short and neutral, but I think I undershot substantially causing it to seem UNDUE. I likely should have approached it more broadly.

The behavior is not really a one time thing, as this individual has repeated this and similar behaviors, and reliable sources have covered it years after the original occurrence. I likely should have included broader coverage of the various arugments documented in reliable sources, to keep things DUE.

For the specific argument around the "Autism Speaks" organization, in addition to the close-to-event sources in that diff (Slate [5], Pacific Standard [6]), here are some further sources:

  1. Forward (masthead) ties it to other similar behaviors nearly 4 years after the initial occurrence, [7]
  2. Grunge (masthead) gives a bit of analysis within a list, 6 years later [8]
  3. Here is some primary sourcing via Twitter that we likely should not use in the article, but for purposes of discussion, demonstrating that the individual continued to engage in this fight years after the initial controversy [9]

Now here's some sources that cover a related behavior over the term "cis"

  1. Washington Post ("Style" section) notes his fight over the term "cis" [10]
  2. The Independent ("Culture" section) details the events [11]
  3. Rolling Stone further contextualizes this [12]

Here's some contemporaneous borderline-gossip coverage of different social media spat, perhaps not usable in the article, but still useful for purposes of this discussion: New York Magazine's Intelligencer [13], Vox [14]

Suffice it to say, this individual has a well-documented years-long history of high-profile arguments on social media, much of which is documented well after the fact in RS. Given also the well-documented feuds with coworkers and colleagues, I think coverage of this part of this individual's life is DUE. What's the best way to accomplish this in this biography? —siroχo 22:23, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

I think that you can add the info back to the article if you want to. CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 03:58, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I'll add it back in a better way soon, rather than reverting the revert myself, because I do agree that I did not present it ideally in the initial form. —siroχo 06:30, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Astronaut

William Shatner is listed as an Astronaut in NASA data bases as he went more than 50 miles high from Earth surface and into space. Why has wiki refused to list this as one of his jobs? He went and completed an approved astronaut course. Then completed a mission to space. If he is NASA approved why not wiki? 75.192.98.250 (talk) 13:54, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
