Edit reversion 5 May 17 edit

@Montanabw: In your edit here you reverted my edit with summary "Reverted good faith edits by Shhhnotsoloud (talk): Um, no, these are not at all the same, and article content changes." I had previously removed the terms Dominant white, Gray (horse), Lethal white syndrome, Sabino horse. This is a disambiguation page covered by policy WP:DAB and MOS:DAB. The aim of the page is to assist navigation for users who search for "White horse". It is not a page to explain the different types of horses that are white: that is the job of another page: White (horse). All of the terms I removed (1) do not contain the words "White horse", and (2) are all sections of the article White (horse). There is no need for them to be at this disambiguation page and their presence is policy non-compliant and gets in the way of users searching for other things. Please revert your edit. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:35, 5 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much for your gracious WP:BRD, Shhhnotsoloud. I most respectfully disagree that there is no need for navigation aids to the different articles. White horses are very complex genetically (over 22 alleles of W alone, plus SB-1, gray and the non-KIT alleles linked to splash and frame spotting, without bringing in the "few spot" leopard complex horses). I would suggest we seek a middle ground. The White (horse) article is dated and in need of an upgrade. The dominant white article explains what people are really looking for when they want to know about white horses. So, perhaps we could eliminate the gray and the sabino horse articles from the list, but keep the others? Montanabw(talk) 04:21, 6 May 2017 (UTC) Oh, and, the hatnote page is a guideline, not a policy, just to clarify. Montanabw(talk) 04:27, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Montanabw:. You're right about guidelines/policy, but a guideline should be followed unless there's a good reason not to which I can't see there is. I am confining this reply to the matter of this page: content changes to White (horse) are a matter for there. The article White horse is basically saying to a reader: "there are loads of uses of "white horse". If you're interested in horses that are white, go here White (horse). If you're not then here's many more uses of the term, people, places, songs, whisky...". It's not a place to explain the genetics of white horses: do that at White (horse). This page is about words and the use of, not horses and the genetics of. And if people are really looking for "dominant white", then there it is, at White (horse), section 1.1. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 05:57, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, I guess my position is that we can trim the list some, but I really feel that a dab page can include multiple possibilities. Can we meet in the middle here? There are lots of different kinds of white horses, not just one. Montanabw(talk) 08:44, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've made an edit which we might agree as a compromise? Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:40, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
That works. Montanabw(talk) 01:07, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Whitehorse redirect edit

Can we redirect Whitehorse to Whitehorse, Yukon, instead of White horse? No other term on the disambiguation page is written as one word, and it is hard to imagine that someone looking for a white horse on wikipedia will go to a page on Whitehorse. Oeoi (talk) 19:01, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Oeoi: It's clear [1] that the primary topic for "Whitehorse" is the Canadian city, and so what we ought to do is move Whitehorse, Yukon to Whitehorse over the redirect and put a hatnote to the disambiguation page White horse. However, so as not to confuse the RM notified above, I'd leave it until after that RM has closed. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 18:20, 6 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I will note that while the Yukon capital is primary, there are other places so named. It isn’t quite to the level of London, so I’d advocate for Whitehorse (disambiguation). Montanabw(talk) 22:28, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I also think Whitehorse should point to Whitehorse, Yukon, any reason not to proceed? 162.208.168.92 (talk) 07:18, 27 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
This is evidently contentious and should be considered at WP:RFD. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:33, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

White horse (disambiguation)White Horse – Per WP:DIFFCAPS. By far the most common link on this page is to pages with the proper name "White Horse". The title of the disambiguation page should reflect that. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 07:31, 11 November 2019 (UTC) Relisting. SITH (talk) 10:26, 18 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. As usual, DIFFCAPS is a terrible idea for disambiguation. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:10, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per WP:DIFFCAPS a reader typing a capital "H" probably wants a proper noun but if they want the general topic they'll still have the 1st link on the DAB. An editor who links to "White Horse" is surely intending a proper noun. This isn't a form of disambiguation but simply landing readers on the DAB similar to Friendly Fire, Red Meat and Broadway Theatre. @BD2412: you closed the other move as Moved as proposed but moved all the others (including the Black Horse DAB) but didn't move this one, was that a mistake or did you think this one needed discussing separately? Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:13, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
    • Yes, I should have made explicit that this one required further discussion to move the disambiguation page to a non-disambiguated title. There was at least one clear objection to this specific move in the original discussion. bd2412 T 05:06, 13 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose this proposal. Would support redirecting White Horse here. --Khajidha (talk) 03:50, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Support for reasons articulated by Crouch, Swale, particularly the benefit of preventing mistargeted links. Colin M (talk) 17:35, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Per Necrothesp. We hashed this issue out a decade ago, why revisit it again? Montanabw(talk) 18:34, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Where? The recent RFC about DIFFCAPS is that it can still be used but not always. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:48, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
disambiguation of white horse. The most obvious use is to look for white horses, to capitalize for geographic locations will confuse matters further. Montanabw(talk) 21:45, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
If you're looking for one of the geographical locations you're more likely to capitalize the "W" than if you're looking for the animal. If you search for "White Horse" and want the animal its still on the 1st line so no one is likely to get confused. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:55, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Experienced WP users understand our capitalization quirks. The random user searching for a concept doesn’t, and they expect the same level of “forgiveness “ seen in Google. We let lc searches return capitalized words, the opposite is not the case. Montanabw(talk) 22:25, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
If someone searches for "White Horse" hoping to find the animal they'll still find it on the 1st item of the DAB, isn't that enough "forgiveness"? While then we don't annoy readers and editors hoping to find a proper noun by redirecting them to the animal when the deliberately capitalize. Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:30, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Unless there is an exact match for the capitalisation entered, search defaults to lower case, and anyone who expects titles not to be case sensitive would use entirely one case, or possibly sentence case, not capitalise the first letter of each word. So for White horse, all have to be considered, and for White Horse, only that specific one (although listing the others to avoid having multiple disambiguation pages). Peter James (talk) 17:09, 18 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Support White Horse has no primary topic, and most uses on the disambiguation page are White Horse, not White horse. Peter James (talk) 17:09, 18 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Whitehorse: cut of meat from a sperm whale edit

"Whitehorse" can also refer to a cut of sperm whale meat. It spans from the front upper teeth to behind the eye down to just in front of the pectoral fin and back to the corner of the mouth, along the lip and back to the front upper teeth. This is according to a display at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. I'm not much of a Wikipedian, so I hope somebody can add the relevant info here for me. 63.155.10.22 (talk) 22:06, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
