Grossly inappropriate self-advertising language

edit

This is straight, shameless political self-advertising. Every few sentences is one reading like a political slogan. Some of it's straight out incoherent: "though he was as instrumental in being the appropriately minister maker". If someone in the MDMK thinks this is furthering your cause, you're very much mistaken. You are instead representing the organization as being partisan, and capable of seeing only one side of a situation. And to someone with historical experience, it appears you have adopted boilerplate revolutionary language whose foundation is not in reason (this is an encyclopedia), but in hysteria.

Cleanup

I have done some cleanup work on this article. Let us discuss about any issue related to the cleanup here. Docku (talk) 16:01, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I heard that his mother tongue is Telugu, if it is correct then that may be included in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vakil123 (talkcontribs) 09:05, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

You are right. His ancestors migrated from Gandikota, (Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, after the capture of the fort by Mir Jumla, commander of Golkonda sultan. He belongs to Telugu-speaking Kammavar Naidu ancestry.Kumarrao (talk) 06:53, 6 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

page move

edit

Vaiko comes from his full Tamil name Vai. Kopalswamy (V.Gopalswamy). The move needs to be reverted. --CarTick 12:43, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've moved the page back now.-Raghavan(Talk) 13:11, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure if the Naidu qualification is needed. it may be correct, but that is not how he is commonly known as. --CarTick 13:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hmm,But his birth name is Vai.Gopalasamy Naidu as mentioned in one of the sources.-Raghavan(Talk) 13:49, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please bear with my ignorance of how Tamil names are anglicized, but I just want to confirm that there is not supposed to be a space between "Vai." and "Gopalasamy". The Tamil script (both here and in the Tamil language article) seem to have a space. Is there some reason it's omitted here? If there are sources using that form, could it just be a typographical error that has propagated? —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 21:57, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

it is probably an error. it needs to have the space. --CarTick 23:56, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I guess caste name is not need here.No one knows him as Gopalsamy Naidu. Please change.

Hi Osterhaus, i agree with you. Raghavan doesnt seem to agree. u might want to start a debate. see here. Wikipedia:Requested moves. --CarTick 00:10, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
He changed his name legally to "Vaiko" in the late 90s.(see official candidate list for 99 elections before that it was "vai. gopalsamy". The "Naidu" was never there. Persons born after 1940s in TN almost never use caste surnames. The problem arises when non-TN person writes an article about a TN born person and if he knows the subject's caste, appends it to the name (what sheela bhatt of rediff did).--Sodabottle (talk) 12:50, 29 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
In summary: His birth name is "V. Gopalsamy" or "Vai. Gopalsamy". He is commonly known as "Vaiko" and later changed his name to it. Either of the three is fine (though "vaiko" is preferable per WP:COMMONNAME). But spelling it as "gopalasamy" or appending "naidu" suffix are both wrong.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:08, 29 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Original name was V. Gopalaswamy Naidu. Please see (http://www.sangam.org/taraki/articles/2006/11-29_Vaiko.php?uid=2093).Kumarrao (talk) 14:25, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
See the explanation given above. The interview was done by a north indian (a rediff article), with no idea of tamil nadu naming conventions. You can check the ECI affidavits to see what name he uses and what his common name is. TN people from TN almost never use caste surnames since the 1940s. --Sodabottle (talk) 15:49, 22 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: moved to Vaiko. Favonian (talk) 12:05, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Vai. GopalsamyVaiko – per WP:COMMONNAME. The sources clearly always refer to the subject as "Vaiko", and not anything else. Lynch7 16:12, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Support per common name. He changed his name officially to "Vaiko" in the late 90s. The media in TN (both english and Tamil) use "Vaiko" almost exclusively. The Rediff interview cited above is an outlier.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:34, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
