As members of a coalition of pro-Israel organizations debate whether to oust a dovish Zionist student group accused of bringing Israel-bashers to American campuses, at least one national Jewish organization has already pulled out of the coalition in protest of the dovish group’s activities.

The American Jewish Congress recently tendered its resignation from the Israel on Campus Coalition, a 31-member alliance of Jewish organizations working to “foster support for Israel on the college campus.” The resignation comes amid complaints lodged with the campus coalition over the activities of the Union of Progressive Zionists, a 60-campus student network sponsored by several Labor Zionist organizations. ...

I hope that this establishes that the UPZ is notable. It has members on more than 60 university campuses. It has been the subject of more than one article in a national newspaper (The Forward). A quick look at "What links here" will show that there have been "red links" from other pages to the Union of Progressive Zionists for months, if not longer.

NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (JTA)—In the crossfire of rhetoric on college campuses surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ilene Arnsdorf feels intimidated—by her fellow Jewish students.

A 19-year-old Cornell student, Arnsdorf said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has raised questions for her about Israeli policy.

She feels torn, she said, between the campus’ pro-Israel front and its movement for Palestinian rights.

Her roommate belongs to the former, which is “so organized,” Arnsdorf said, that “it’s been hard to be able to stand up to her.”

That’s why Arnsdorf joined more than 100 students from some 40 college campuses for the Oct. 15-17 founding conference in Newark, N.J., of a new movement, The Union of Progressive Zionists. ...

U.S. Zionist Groups Facing Potential Rift

The Arab-Israeli conflict is now sowing discord in an unlikely venue: among Zionist groups based in the United States. In December, the Zionist Organization of America started a campaign to expel the Union of Progressive Zionists from the membership of the Israel on Campus Coalition; the 30- member group, based in Washington, fosters collegiate interest in Israel and includes such heavyweights as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the American Jewish Congress. Last month the coalition’s steering committee voted against expulsion, 9-0, but the intra-group feud smolders on.

The dispute dates to November 2006, when the progressive Zionists began sponsoring campus visits for an Israeli group called Breaking the Silence. The group publicizes alleged human rights abuses perpetrated by Israel in the occupied territories and dispatches veterans of the Israeli army to speak on the subject. The Progressive Zionists Union helped booked soldiers affiliated with Breaking the Silence for appearances last fall at Columbia University in New York, the University of Maryland at College Park, Beloit College in Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. ...

This article is about the Union of Progressive Zionists (UPZ), a student organization that no longer exists. (Hence the use of the past tense throughout the article.)

It is silly to "update" the article with news for J Street U, an organization into which UPZ was merged. UPZ and J Street U are not the same organization. And UPZ no longer exists. — Malik Shabazz ^Talk/_Stalk 23:11, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, this is all extremely unproductive. I guess one thing we need to clarify though is whether UPZ is simply defunct -- and should be labeled as such -- or it simply the predecessor to "J Street U," in which case this article should potentially be renamed "J Street U" and have UPZ redirect here. Here is how J Street U describes itself[1]:

Founded in 2004 by veteran members of the Israeli left and their American supporters – Ameinu, Meretz USA, Habonim Dror North America and Hashomer Hatzair North America – the Union of Progressive Zionists (UPZ) was created to present students on campus with an alternative to the extremist voices from both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian debate. This national network of student activists was active as the UPZ for 5 years and in May 2009, the UPZ became the J Street Education Fund, Inc. (JSEF) and all UPZ campus activities were incorporated into JSEF as "J Street U."

Based on this language here, it might be best to simply rename the article "J Street U," since it just appears to be a successor organization of UPZ rather than an entirely new entity. Quite open to discussion though. Plot Spoiler (talk) 00:07, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
