April 2011

When was Chinen Sensei promoted to 9th Dan and by whom? It has been a year or two since I have seen him, however I distinctly remember that that was not a likely event. Rnjbilliards (talk) 22:27, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sensei always said that when he left Okinawa he was told to wear a black belt when he taught. He also told me personally that his first actual rank was 6th Dan, as that was what Miyazato Sensei graded him at when they began using formal ranks. I guess the question is, how accurate do you want your page to be? Rnjbilliards (talk) 22:49, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

"In 1984, Chinen founded his own karate organization, Jundokan International,[1]" It was 1987 or early 1988 and it wasn't his it was Miyazato Sensei's. Chinen Sensei was chairman (Miyazato Sensei was President)and kept control of the International organization when they split several years later... I would have to check my records to tell you the exact date.

"and is now no longer associated with the IOGKF.[14]" True, he has not been associated with the IOGKF since the split in 1987.

"He assisted in the preparation of the book Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate (1987)as a translator.[15]" I don't know... I was his student then and he could have been working with someone on a book. He was definitely working on his own book at that time.

"In 1987, he taught kata in Vancouver.[16]" If so, it was merely a clinic. He was a full-time instructor in Spokane WA at that time. He had 8-10 classes in different locations.

"Around 1991, Miyazato promoted Chinen to the rank of 7th dan.[4]" It was at the Gasshuku in 1988.
